THE HEART OF OUR WORSHIP

Week 3: The Holy Communion Liturgy, Part 1

TWO GOALS 1) To help us better connect head and heart.

2) To tune our ears to hear the gospel in worship.

THEOLOGY •  The central question being asked in the

Reformation: How are people changed? §  By a work of God in the heart.

•  And how does God do this work? §  Through His Word, particularly in the gospel.

THEOLOGY •  The driving force behind the Reformation, and

therefore the driving force behind a Reformation understanding of worship can be summarized in this statement:

HIGHLIGHTS

The Gospel Procession

Or, what’s all that fuss with the candles and organ and walking and special Bible and whatnot?

HIGHLIGHTS

Confession of Sin

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us.

HIGHLIGHTS

Confession of Sin We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

HIGHLIGHTS

The Comfortable Words

“Come to me…” “For God so loved…”

“This is a true saying and worthy…” “If any man sin, we have an Advocate…”

HIGHLIGHTS

The Peace

HIGHLIGHTS

The Great Thanksgiving Officiant: The Lord be with you. People: And with thy spirit. Officiant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up unto the Lord. Officiant: Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God. People: It is meet and right so to do.
