I know that all our staff have worked incredibly hard to keep supporting our young people and setting work and learning to be completed online but it is no substitute for children actually learning together in a school environment. I, and all of the staff at Lawn Manor are incredibly pleased that we are going to be able to open fully in September and over the last few weeks we have been making the plans for this to happen. I was able to share these plans with you earlier in the week and although the way the school will operate in the new academic year will be different, we are confident that it will enable us to operate our school with a full and rich curriculum for all pupils. Over the last few months, our young people have like all of us, been limited in our opportunities to socialise and maintain friendships in person and this will no doubt have affected wellbeing and mental health. Teachers and our pastoral team will all be mindful of this when we return and will be on-hand to offer support. Operating our year group ‘bubbles’ in different zones of the school will allow our pupils to socialise within their year groups at break and lunch-time. All of the new systems will be explained to pupils in assembly when they arrive on their first day of school in September. In the letter earlier in the week, I outlined the plans for the first week back at school in September with a phased approach to returning. I would like to be clear that from week two all pupils are expected to be in school full- time 8.40am – 3.00pm. They should arrive via the assigned gates outlined in the previous letter. I am very impressed with the way that our pupils have adapted to the online learning and the commitment that they have had to completing their work and liaising with their teachers in such a different way. They have been a real credit to the school but also a credit to you and I would like to thank you for supporting us and your children to complete their work – I know that this will not always have been an easy task! Finally, after the last four months, I hope that you can finally take advantage of the lifting of the lockdown restrictions and have some enjoyable time with your families over the summer holiday. We are really looking forward to welcoming all of our children back in September. Saturday 11th July was the 25th anniversary of the genocide of 8372 Bosniak men and boys at Srebrenica. Like many tragedies in history, this terribly sad story could have been different. “The Srebrenica genocide was the worst atrocity crime on European soil since the Second World War. ... A quarter century ago, the United Nations and the international community failed the people of Srebrenica. As former Secretary-General Kofi Annan said, this failure will “haunt our history forever”, (UN.org). Perhaps as a result of this collective failure, this genocide has been largely overlooked. However here at Lawn Manor, we have decided to learn and remember instead. In the week leading up to the 25th Anniversary, pupils were sent research tasks to find out more about why and how this tragedy occurred. Pupils then used this as a basis for individual departments to set subject specific personal challenges to pupils. A massive thank you to Miss Conroy in Maths who set the Tessellation challenge in math which you will see featured in this newsletter. Thanks also to Mr Henderson who has planted a tree in the forest garden with the names of victims that have been researched by the pupils. Ms Preece ran 8372 steps with our pupils around the school field to help pupils understand the scale of the tragedy. Ms Preece also baked a traditional rolat demonstrating that food and culture is also to be celebrated and remembered. Pupils in the English department have sent some wonderful acrostic poems. PE have been looking at sports from the region and setting personal skill challenges in basketball, volleyball and football. RPE have produced some great posters focusing on the themes of propaganda and prejudice. Science have used what pupils have learned about Srebrenica and included it in their quizzes for this week. Some pupils have taken the initiative on their own, Aayush in Year 8 for example, has recreated the Srebrenica flower from clothes in his wardrobe. On the Friday before the anniversary, the key worker group within school made personal pledges to help prevent discrimination and prejudice in the future. They drew the outline of their hands and designed their pledges on the cut-out, these were then backed onto green which then resembled the Srebrenica Flower. This has been a whole school effort and I would like to thank everyone in our school community for the research, thought and actions that you have all taken, making you upstanders in remembering the tragedies of the past in order that we don’t repeat them. Also thanks to Dr Nicola Wetherall at RWBA who has been a constant source of inspiration and resources to help make this happen. If you would like to learn more about the Srebrenica genocide please visit: https://www.srebrenica.org.uk/ Mr Bull Subject Lead History

Together Apart We are putting together a book of creative responses to mark this very unusual time. The book will contain writing, artwork, recordings or music and dance and many more creative ideas from our fantastic pupils in all year groups. We’ve already received lots of amazing pieces from our pupils, bt there’s still lots of time to contribute. As this has been a time of reflection, you could write an account of how life has changed for the better or worse for you or others. You could speak to a family member / key worker and ask them if you could write on their behalf. You could write an imaginary story inspired by what has happened. You could take photos of your amazing artwork, cookery, and objects you’ve built or repaired. You could record a song you’ve learnt or a dance you’ve perfected. The options are endless! If you’d like to take part, email you work to your teacher or [email protected] One Last Breath

I don't remember much before it all went dark It all happened so fast, my recollections of that week are far and inbetween. On Monday I am in the parking lot of my allergist’s office, With back ache and a cough that I thought was a sinus infection. Sunday, I'm in an ambulance headed to an emergency room. Those memories are still so fond to me, Even as I lay here now. The alarmed chatter of doctors echoing through the corridors, bustling through the doors I faintly remember passing a young boy on the way in, His features were gaunt, lifeless Void of all hope When we arrived, I couldn't fathom the scene that had unfolded It was unbelievable Masses of patients lined the beds The atmosphere was overwhelming I was denied life-saving care Guess, I'm past my prime Not worth the risk I was grouped amongst other elder citizens All the days spent here haven't been entirely lonely I made a friend 'Albert' he said 'Nice to meet you Although we couldn't exchange greetings, we compromised. We would talk, maybe even laugh a little If we were lucky. We reminisced about our previous years... How we would tour the neighbourhood on our bikes Or adventure deep into the night Then one day it just stopped. He was gone. Just like that It's over. As though he never existed Erased from history. After that, my condition deteriorated

Three days later, I was placed in medically induced coma.

Monotonous beeping fills my senses Sometimes people come to look at me They prod around before sighing and leave Everything hurts I beg of you Rid me of this anvil that lies upon my chest So heavy, so unbearable I know I'm in my fleeting moments. Finally my breathing slows... The soft murmur of the machine soothes me Such tranquillity and peace Now I can rest. I drift away. Free of trouble and stress, My lungs rise for the final time Gasping...For one last breath. Tye Stroud

A Poem on – COVID-19 Travelled from above sea and rivers, Spread the world like a fire, No crowd, no cars on the roads, All cities with empty streets, Only lights at night in sights. No schools, no fun, no work Parents helping children with homework, No handshake, no hug to the loved ones, Only keeping a distance between them, Afraid of getting in contact. Just a sneeze or a cough, if you contact, Stays few days in the body, and a near death, Some lost their loved and dear ones, Some struggle between life and death, Transfer from bat to human flesh, It’s a deadly virus called “COVID – 19. Still life in danger, do their duties, Doctors, Nurses, Teachers, Chemists. Bless and thanks to you all, Hope, soon it will be back as normal. Claren D’Silva

Lockdown Sports Day

This year we had to do sports day with a difference as our traditional sports day was cancelled due to corona virus; we decided to set a virtual sports day that all pupils could perform at home. We designed some rather fun events using scrunched up pieces of paper, alongside some fitness based events and we came up with a rather challenging decathlon. I was very pleased to see so many staff and pupils taking part and the feedback received was very positive. It seems everyone who took part really enjoyed the events. Results will follow via house assemblies. Hope you all have a happy and safe summer and are looking forward to some PE lessons on your return to school. Stay active! Mr Oliver

I enjoyed the sports day today as it was a lot more fun and I feel as if it wasn’t to competitive and we could just have fun with it. My favourite activity was probably the paper ball keep ups just because football is one of my favourite sports and I have been wanting to try and get better at keep ups so it really helped me. My least favourite was probably the paper table step ups because the paper kept falling off my head and it was very stressful. Todays sports day was probably one of the best sports days ever.- Sheneya Merrick

Lawn manors Library Lockdown

A diary of our day….. Each day starts with a ‘good morning and how are you?’ Pupils then either enjoy a brisk walk around the grounds of the school perimeter and collect pine cones on the way for an Arts & Crafts project or a fast pace PE/ fitness session with on line star Jo Wicks- this is very exhausting. The next session is to catch up on any work that has been set by teachers online.

We then enjoy break in the fresh air- practicing Social distance at all times, a thorough hand wash on our return and ready to start the next session. This session has had lots of variety- Geography, Media, English, Maths with teachers visiting our group, it is great for pupils to have face to face safe lessons. Next is lunch – Yum yum. Hand wash on return ready for the afternoon. The afternoon has been filled with trampolining, Table Tennis, Reading or Arts and Crafts- Pupils made some beautiful flowers to decorate the Library and cut out hand prints from old books to cover an old books case which will have the quote- ‘Get your hands on a new book’ It all looks great – Very creative. We always finish the day with Quiz and Bingo which has become a very competitive

of fun!!! We have done quizzes on Horror, School, Disney, Food, Songs, Books, Films to name but a few. These have been quick fire rounds which have helped rack up lots of house points. The favourite quiz was a Big baby quiz, where staff sent in photos from when they were a baby and we had to guess who was who. Some really funny ones! Mr Langdown has not changed much!!! Then it’s Goodbye and enjoy your evening. The Library certainly has become a fun bubble with lots of activities to keep us all happy through these difficult and strange times.
