Seasonal Garden AdviceDid you know that in one year, an acre

of trees can absorb as much carbon as

is produced by a car driven up to 8700

miles? Trees literally allow us to breathe,

they are vital to our existence, yet most of

the time we take them for granted. Have a

good look around your garden or street.

How much do you actually know about the

trees in it? Can you name them? Do you

know how old they are? Are they healthy?

Getting to know the trees in your

immediate surroundings is the first step

towards preserving them. Here are a few

more interesting facts about trees:

• Research shows that people have

happier relationships and perform better in

tests when they live in tree-filled

neighbourhoods

• Leafy streets also encourage a lower

crime rate & a more "civilised" atmosphere,

even in poor areas, researchers found.

• The UK has the largest concentration of

ancient trees in Northern Europe.

• The oldest tree in the UK and perhaps in

Europe is believed to be the Fortingall Yew

near Aberfeldy in Scotland, and is thought

to be 5,000 years old.

• A hollow tree is often a healthy strong

tree. The decaying wood produced as it

hollows acts as extra food for the tree

which might even send down aerial roots

inside the hollow to make the most of the

rich pickings.

• Trees shrink as they become ancient,

becoming shorter and squatter. It’s a great

survival strategy as it means they can cope

better with high winds.

“Blooming Summer”The Natural Approach

With the warm sun in the sky, the soft

grass under foot and the beautiful array of

flowers in full bloom its hard to see how

anybody could not be enjoying this time of

year. (Mind you, at the time of going to

press who knows what the Kent weather

will be like, but we can hope) However,

there are some problems made worse by

the heat of Summer.

Some conditions are exacerbated by heat,

some even being caused by too much

heat within the body. Eczema can be

particularly bad during the Summer

months and a danger period (especially

for children) is the warm nights. It can be

more difficult to not scratch when half

asleep, causing skin to break and be more

susceptible to infection. A soothing wash

with cooled and refrigerated chamomile or

peppermint tea may

provide some relief. The latter has the

benefit of also being a mild insect

repellent too! Keep the tea refrigerated

once made, and discard after 48 hours.

More difficult cases may respond to a

cream made from chickweed – this helps

cool the skin, heal and relieve the ‘itchy’

sensation. Chronic cases of eczema may

require consultation with a qualified

Medical Herbalist to

address the

condition internally

too, do feel free to

contact me for

advice.

So what about

insect bites? Some

lucky people don’t

get bitten. However

others know they

will be covered in huge, inflamed bites

once the insects appear. To reduce

inflammation, relieve the itch and provide

antiseptic protection try applying diluted

lavender essential oil. Combination herbal

creams are available too should you want

something else, or as a repellent – do give

me a call should you need something. If

you are prone to being bitten you might

benefit from a consultation, it may be that

the toxic load of your body is too great and

there may be changes you can make to

make you less susceptible. A prescription

maybe necessary to help balance your

body – hypersensitivity to bites can be

indicative of a poorly functioning immune

system. Lynda Jones

Helping older people

stay independentProviding Information & Advice

What does your role involve?

My role is to help our clients by

giving up-to-date information and

advice, allowing them to maintain

their independence wherever

possible. An example of how we can

help is that we are able to work with

clients to ensure that they are

getting the benefits they are entitled

to. We will not charge you for our

service, and if we can’t help, we’ll

put you in touch with people who

can.

What type of information and

advice is available?

One of the main areas we are able

to help with is benefits advice and

form filling. This means that we can

help you to make sure you are

getting all of the benefits that you

are entitled to, and give as much

help as needed to complete the

forms required. We offer our service

either at Age Concern Lyminge or in

your own home.

We also help with applications, and

checking bills, such as your gas or

electric bill, if you

have any concerns. Applications

may include those for your free bus

pass, blue parking badge, and much

more.

What other information might I

find useful?

We have a huge range of

information available, from details of

home food delivery services to

specialist clothing. The aim of my

role is to connect people with the

information and services they need,

and by doing this we aim to promote

independence and help older

people live the way they would like

to.

How can I find out more?

Please do call on 01303 863861.

Our service in Lyminge operates

between 9.30am and 3.30pm,

Monday to Thursday. Please be

aware that although Age Concern

concerntrates on those aged 50

plus, we can also help those who

are younger and concerned about

their parents.

Look out for further information about

Age Concern in the next edition.

Over the coming editions of the handbook, we will be bringing you a series

of articles about your local Age Concern, to ensure that everyone is aware

of the services they provide, which are available to all older adults.

In this edition, we focus on the role of Michael Foxon, the Information and

Advice Officer, based at Age Concern Lyminge.

If you would be interested in finding out more,

please phone 01303 862364.

ACUPUNCTURE

Physical and Emotional Wellbeing

for Adults and Children

Do you want complete strangers making

decisions about your finances and

personal welfare if you are not able to?

That is what can happen if you do not have a

Lasting Power of Attorney in place. Your

husband, wife, son, daughter, mother, father,

sister or brother cannot make those decisions

for you, it doesn’t work that way.

Should you lose your mental capacity through

for example an accident, illness or a stroke and

do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in

place then the problems begin: Your bank

accounts including joint accounts along with

pension payments and if you are in receipt of

any benefits can be frozen. An application

must be made to the Court of Protection for

someone to manage your affairs (which maybe

refused). The whole process can take up to

three months or more, possible costs can rise

to over £1000 and strict parameters will be laid

down by the court that must be followed as

well as possible supervision which will have to

be paid for. All this at a time when it is

needed least; your family is already trying to

cope with the emotional stress & strain of your

illness or accident, they do not need the

additional burden of financial restraints. In 24

months the Court of Protection took control of

£3.2 billion of assets of individuals who had

lost their mental capacity against the wishes of

relatives and in 12 months charged £23 million

in fees. This is not hearsay; this is real life.

Remember it’s never too early to make a Will

or Lasting Power of Attorney, but often too late.Jaci Godman Irvine is an Estate Planner
