Playground PredicamentThe news is full of the phrase austerity measures and you may or may not have felt the result of any of these yet but there are changes afoot!Pre- austerity measures, PCC allocated 500 every year that was saved into a 'pot' for repairs and maintenance of each of Pembrokeshires playgrounds. The Havens Playground pot had 1627 available and this has been used to pay part of the 3834 that has been spent on playground repairs in 2014/15. To help HCC fund the remaining balance of 2207, the Havens Carnival committee presented a cheque for 1000 to HCC on June 11. The biggest expense recently was the replacement of the 'wetpour' - the

rubber type surface, the job, recently completed by a contractor.Costs will RiseAs the playground equipment ages, it is likely that maintenance costs will rise. The PCC have now adopted a new strategy and will no longer allocate 500 per year for the Havens playground - instead all the funds go into a bigger 'pot' and each community in Pembrokeshire must now 'bid' to secure funds.

County Council InspectionsFuture repairs & replacements required will be identified through the PCC as they carry out the required regular safety inspections. The cost of the repairs/replacements will have to funded either by HCC or a successful bid to the PCC 'Pot'.Is there a chance that a poorly maintained playground will be closed by a PCC inspector and then be disallowed from bidding for funding?Pride in Our Playground? If, as a community we can demonstrate a genuine need & enthusiasm for the Havens Playground, we will have a better chance of a successful bid for maintenance funding from PCC. One way to do this could be to form a Pride in our Playground crew of volunteers, who could carry out regular informal equipment inspections, complete minor repairs, raise awareness and fund raise.

So, come on Mums n Dads, Grandmas & Granpas, will one of you take up the gauntlet? Set a date & a venue for an inaugural Pride in

our Playground meeting...spread the word and run with it?

    DALE FORT

    ROCK-POOLING IN JUNE

Rock-pooling this month was really well attended despite the grey sky.

Ten young Wildlife Watchers met in Dale to search the rock pools at Black Rock on Saturday morning. We collectively

found twelve different species including four different types of crab: Edible, Shore, Hermit and Broad-clawed porcelain. Some of our Wildlife Watchers also cleverly caught three different fish species: several Blennies, a couple of Pipefish and a Butterfish. And the eagle eyed spotted both a Strawberry and Dahlia sea anemone. One of the animals the group collected was a tiny Shore crab which had cleverly camouflaged itself to blend in to its surroundings (see picture insert), making itself look very different from the adults which are generally green.Camouflage will be one of the themes for the next Wildlife Watch group meeting which will take place Saturday 11th July. The title is Colour in Nature and we will be trying to understand why plants and

animals are the colour they are. There will be a special Wiggly Worm game and, if we get time, we will be making some butterfly feeders. We will all meet at Dale Fort at 10am on the Saturday and will be walking toward Castle Beach.

To book a place, contact Dale Fort Field Centre on 01646 636

205 or email Catherine on catherine.df@field-studies-

council.org For more information about the group, visit the Dale Fort Watch Group webpage - www.wildlifewatch.org.uk/watchgroups/dale-fort.

BIRD WATCH Bird of the Month: Great Spotted WoodpeckerGreat Spotted Woodpeckers are woodland birds but at this time of year they will regularly make forays into gardens to take beakfuls of food away for their young. Eventually the adults will bring the fledglings with them and teach them how to feed from peanut, suet and other feeders. They are about the size of a Blackbird with black and white plumage, and red under the tail. It is very easy to tell the family members apart and its all to do with the head and neck. Adult birds have a black head whilst juveniles sport a red cap; the male has a red nape whilst the females is black. The head and neck of Great Spotted Woodpeckers are specially structured to prevent brain damage when they bang their beak (at 10-40 hits per second) on dead trees or even metal. Drumming, as it is known, is performed by both sexes and enables a pair to keep in touch with each other. The male will also use it as a kind of song to deter rivals and to attract a mate. Their strong beak is used to excavate the nest cavity, pull off bark to locate hidden larvae and even to extract the seeds from pine cones. However, you may be surprised to learn that they are equally capable of boring into the sides of nest boxes to take the nestlings of birds such as Blue Tits. To help prevent this scenario from playing out in your own garden, you may wish to invest in a woodcrete (a mixture of wood chippings and concrete) bird box or use a metal plate over the nest box hole.Did you know? Descent is the collective noun for woodpeckers (not specific to Great Spotted Woodpecker). The tongue is so long that it coils around the back of the woodpeckers skull and is used like a harpoon to extract insect larvae from within trees The Welsh name is Cnocell Fraith Fywaf. How to attract them to your garden: Great Spotted Woodpeckers adore peanuts (always feed from a metal mesh feeder) and fat blocks - dont be surprised if they eat a block per day! Conservation status: Green (no cause for concern). There has been a rapid increase in the breeding population since the 1990s. BTO Garden BirdWatch data show that there is a peak in gardens in early summer when the adult birds bring their young to garden feeders. Living near woodland, I see this bird for around half of the year. Im looking forward to welcoming this years young.Make Your Garden Count! If you enjoy watching the birds and wildlife in your garden why not take part in BTO Garden BirdWatch the largest year-round survey of garden birds in the world? Please contact me for a free enquiry pack or to book a talk (Swansea and

surrounding areas). Happy Garden Bird Watching! Amanda Skull, Garden BirdWatch Ambassador 07952 758293

Photo Background: The nest hole is approximately 40ft or so up, and I know this is the third year at least

it`s been in use. Male & female are feeding kids well to date, and every visit ends with the adult removing

waste. I`ve been expecting them to go any day at first light, so every extra day is a bonus. These two photos taken 12th May 2015.

THE HAVENS COMMUNITY ALLOTMENTS AND GARDENSAs for me I can honestly say that by mid June we reached the zenith of the vegetable growing calendar the very summit of allotmenteering that is, the digging of the new potatoes. What was planted back in March (the 20th to be exact) has withstood exceptional gales, unusual frost and very dry spells in between deluges, have rewarded us with what I will always treasure from childhood as a special time, a time of wonder and discovery and of arguing with my sister as to who had the most small marble sized (and therefore the tastiest) tubers. Today combined with fresh mint there is still no greater taste. The added bonus is that they are truly organic Pembrokeshire spuds. Also to be ahead of the game compared to our allotment in Radnorshire when we took the risk of planting potatoes as early as May due to the severity of late frosts well into July. What with the new Maris Pipers (first earlies) followed by Charlotte (second early) and Cara (main crop) we should be self sufficient in potatoes up to Christmas, depending on how many get given to friends and neighbours, or sold at the Carnival in July along with other fresh produce from allotment holders to Support the Boardwalk. So note the date in your diary Saturday July 25th.To be honest every new crop of fruit or veg. is exciting so I must give credit to the rhubarb, spinach and strawberries not to forget the last of 2014 planting of leeks that have kept us going right through the Winter up until end of May. We await with anticipation the first picking of peas that will never reach the pot as they are best eaten straight from the pod.As always there are a few failures, with the most disappointing being three rows of Parsnips planted on 7th April and the seeds never seemed to wake up anything to do with the variety do you think? Student!David Meanwell - Chairman THCAG 01437-781039WI NEWS On Tuesday 9th June the WI were joined by friends on their annual outing. We travelled by coach to Abergwili Junction where we were served delicious bara brith with tea or coffee. It was then a trip along the old railway line, which once used to go to Aberystwyth, with all reminiscing about the smell of a steam train, and the style of the individual carriages. At the next stop we were able to look around an old Mail Carriage and explore the old station. For those who wished there was even a chance to ride on the miniature railway. It was then back to our start giving us a chance to admire the scenery. Our second part of the trip was to Aberglasney where we were given the chance to explore the lovely gardens, soak up its tranquillity, enjoy the sunshine and finally treat ourselves in the very tempting tearooms. Our next meeting will be on Tues. July 14th, Broad Haven Youth Hostel, 7.30pm when Tydfil Morgan, a WI Board of Trustees Member, will be giving us a demonstration on Summer Cooking. Please come and join us.

How is the refurbishment of the boardwalk progressing? Many hands and local generosity making this project possible!

Contractors Agriweld have removed all the original decking and most of the supports. All of the steel has been delivered [good news for users of the Trafalgar terrace carpark!] 90% of the galvanized steel is placed and fitted to the concrete supports. Volunteers from STB arranged collection of the Grip Deck decking timber which was safely delivered by local transporters FRENNI on June 16th. Sixteen Pallets of timber were skillfully unloaded by a

driver & teleporter, very generously donated by local landscape gardener Gordon Smith and his team from DOWN TO EARTH LANDSCAPING. The Timber is secured in a compound made possible by another generous donation of steel site fencing from Andrew Barton of local Hire company MPH.Massive thanks to those that have helped us with our [mostly last minute, panicked] pleas for help!

Next? The grip deck and kickboards will be laid by the team of contractors Agriweld and STB volunteers will be busy measuring and ordering timber for the fitting of the new handrails along the length of the boardwalk.Dont forget , ALL of this has been made possible, through donations & fundraising from locals and visitors to the Havens [and the SITA trust

    grant of course!] and volunteers

Calling All budding Carpenters!STB volunteers will be busy fitting the handrails along the length of the boardwalk If you have time and skills, please do get in touch and volunteer anything from an hour to a day will be appreciated!Email [email protected] or call Linda on 01437 762979

Two Bat Boxes have been installed at the Boardwalk...have you spotted them yet? They are high up out of predators reach and facing a nice sunny position...If you have any Bat experience, please get in touch , we'd love to make Bats another reason to attract visitors to this lovely habitat. Is there anyone who may like to run with this? Encourage visitors, look for projects/agencies we can work with? MISSING!It seems the wooden BENCH from the viewing area by the Trafalgar Terrace car park has been taken away - presumably someone mistook it as "up for grabs" with the decking wood - please ask around your neighbours and perhaps that person will return it!TIMBERRRR!The last of the original decking and supports timber Is now available for collection from Trafalgar terrace car Park - please replace the safety barriers when you leave. Please take 'warts n all' some wood still has bolts in, don't leave the rubbish for boardwalk volunteers to clear up! Please leave a generous donation in the car park collection box as you leave! Enjoy!

    summer recipes...

mojito pitchera refreshing Cuban drink, perfect for summer! If you don't have a muddle stick try a mortar and pestle or the end of a wooden rolling pin. Ingredients (makes a jug/pitcher)10 limes - fresh pulp and juice30 leaves of fresh mint150g sugar (granulated)240ml white rumlemonade or Sprite MethodPlace lime juice, mint and sugar into a pitcher.Using a muddle stick mash to release mint oils, and dissolve sugar into juice.Add rum and lots of ice topped with lemonade.Adding more club soda to glasses if a lighter drink is desired.Garnish with fresh mint and lime slices, enjoy!

lemon drizzle cakeIngredientsServings: Cuts into 10 slices225g unsalted butter, softened225g caster sugar4 eggsfinely grated zest 1 lemon225g self-raising flourFor the drizzle toppingjuice 1 lemons85g caster sugarMethodHeat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Beat together 225g softened unsalted butter and 225g caster sugar until pale and creamy, then add 4 eggs, one at a time, slowly mixing through. Sift in 225g flour, then add the finely grated zest of 1 lemon and mix until well combined. Line a loaf tin (8 x 21cm) with greaseproof paper, then spoon in the mixture and level the top with a spoon.Bake for 45-50 mins until a thin skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. While the cake is cooling in its tin, mix together the juice of 1 1/2 lemons and 85g caster sugar to make the drizzle. Prick the warm cake all over with a skewer or fork, then pour over the drizzle the juice will sink in and the sugar will form a lovely, crisp topping. Leave in the tin until completely cool, then remove and serve. Will keep in an airtight container for 3-4 days, or freeze for up to 1 month.from bbcgoodfood
