PEMBROKESHIRE LEGENDS AND MYTHSSaint GovanOne story says Govan was an Irish monk who travelled to Wales late in life to seek

the friends and family of the abbot who had trained him. Another story identifies Govan with Gawain, one of King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table; another that he was originally a thief!Govan was set upon by pirates, from Ireland or the nearby Lundy Island. The cliff opened up and left a fissure just big enough for him to hide in until the pirates left. St Govan lived within a small cave in the fissure of the cliff. This is now reached by a long flight of stone steps, the number of which is said to vary depending on whether one is ascending or descending.Another legend regarding St Govan concerns his silver bell.

When the bell pealed its sound was of perfect tone and clarity. But pirates who heard the sound left St Govan desolate when they stole the bell. Angels flew in and took it from the pirates and returned it to the hermit. To stop the pirates returning and taking it again, the angels encased the bell in a huge stone. The Bell Rock which is found at the water's edge. Bluestonedid you know that the Bluestones of Stonehenge came from the Preseli Hills? They were taken from an enclosure just over one acre in size, in a small crag-edged enclosure at one of the highest points of the 1,008ft high Carn Menyn mountain in Pembrokeshires Preseli Hills. They were then moved 240 miles to the famous site at Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire. Now thats the history, but the myth is that Merlin the Magician flew them there!St Davids Cathedral. The most religious monument in Wales, dedicated to the principalitys patron saint, St David who was born in the year 500, the son of St Non and a prince of Ceredigion. Legend states that Non gave birth to him on a cliff top during a violent storm. The present cathedral stands on the site of the monastery he founded in the inhospitable area known as Glyn Rhosyn. David and his followers lived a simple life; they refrained from eating meat or drinking beer.

Davids symbol, now a national symbol of Wales, is the leek. and built on a secluded site chosen for the original 6th-century church. Legend has it that the church was purposely built in a dip to shelter it from the marauding Vikings as they sailed round the coastline to attack Ireland Much of the cathedral as it stands today dates from the late 12th century and has been extended and altered over the centuries.

BEATING THE NEW YEAR HANGOVERAlcohol is a diuretic (meaning it removes fluids from the body), so drinking excessively can lead to dehydration. Dehydration is what causes many of the symptoms of a hangover. Alcohol can upset your stomach and give you a bad nights sleep. You may still have some alcohol in your system the next morning.Cure mythHangover cures are generally a myth. There are no cures for a hangover. There are tips for avoiding hangovers and for easing the symptoms if you have one.To minimise the risk of future serious health problems, men shouldn't regularly drink more than three to four units a day. Women shouldn't regularly drink more than two to three units a day. To avoid a hangover, don't drink more than you know your body can cope with. If you're not sure how much that is, be careful.Follow these tips to keep hangovers away:Don't drink on an empty stomach. Before you go out, have a meal that includes carbohydrates (such as pasta or rice) or fats. The food will help slow down the bodys absorption of alcohol. Don't drink dark-coloured drinks if you've found that you're sensitive to

them. They contain natural chemicals called congeners (impurities), which irritate blood vessels and tissue in the brain and can make a hangover worse. Drink water or non-fizzy soft drinks in between each alcoholic drink. Carbonated (fizzy) drinks speed up the absorption of alcohol into your system. Drink a pint or so of water before you go to sleep. Keep a glass of water by the bed to sip if you wake up during the night. The morning afterIf you wake up the next morning feeling terrible, you probably didn't follow this advice. Although there are no real cures for hangovers, there are ways to ease the symptoms.Treatment involves rehydrating the body so it can deal with the painful symptoms (though the best time to rehydrate is before going to sleep).Over-the-counter painkillers can help with headaches and muscle cramps. Paracetamol-based remedies are usually preferable, as aspirin may further irritate the stomach and increase nausea and sickness.Sugary foods may help you feel less trembly. In some cases, an antacid may be needed to settle your stomach first.Bouillon soup, a thin vegetable-based broth, is a good source of vitamins and minerals, which can top-up depleted resources. Its main advantage is that it's easy for a fragile stomach to digest.

Central heating on and a malting dog? Its a nightmare to keep the carpet hair-free!

However, if you take a rubber Croc shoe and put your hands in a fist inside it; then scrape at the carpet, the hair comes up easily! Broad Haven AllotmentsMr Patrick Hellings [Allotments Group Chairman] advised the Council that a pre planning application for individual sheds had been turned down by the PCNPA who favoured one large shed in the north end of the field. Allotment holders felt a shared shed would created a number of problems and after some discussions the Community Council agreed to write to PCNPA expressing their support for individual sheds.Patrick emphasised that the Allotments Group were keen to be flexible and comply with requirements and should PCNPA not wish to see sheds on individual sites perhaps they could all be sited around the area suggested by National Parks for the big shed.Notice Board Slipway, Broad HavenIt was reported that this notice board was swaying in the bad weather recently. JANUARY FACTS!The Latin name for this month,

Ianuarius, comes from the word for door, ianua as it is seen as the door to

a new year.Originally the Roman calendar ran only from March to December. Names for January and February were added

later. The new year in Britain officially began

in January only after the calendar reform of 1752. Before that, it was

celebrated on March 25.The Anglo-Saxon for January was Wulf

Monath (wolf month) because the wolves would come into villages

    searching for food!

Items discussed at the December 2013 Meeting

MATTERS ARISINGBoardwalkA summary of the discussions between the residents and councillors attending the Boardwalk Meeting on the 21 November was circulated and discussed. The Community Council reiterated that they do not have sufficient funds to maintain the increasing maintenance costs for the boardwalk but did not want to see it closed. The major expenses in the past has been carried out by grant funding which has provided lump sum inputs but no provision for continued maintenance. Concern was raised by Councillors that none of the information gathered by the existing Clerk regarding the lease, the original funding conditions, the planning permissions and other legal requirements cannot be checked due to the file not being in their possession. It is understood that the original group The Havens Community Development Trust is in the process of being wound up and that remaining group funds have been passed to the Festival Committee. The Community Council recommendations are

Pembrokeshire County Council's offer to tarmac the cinder path from the Swanswell Footpath to the Viewing Platform should be accepted.

A Broad Haven Residents Environmental Association be formed

in order to apply for funding that is available for community groups.

The existing high maintenance structure be replaced with a fit for purpose, low maintenance material, eg recycled plastic, to ensure sustainability for the future.

The Community Council support the group in their application for initial funding and future low cost maintenance.

PCNP Ranger's offer of support to maintain the overgrowth and grounds should be accepted once the walk has been officially reopened to the public.

The group should maintain transparent and auditable records.

A letter should be sent to Mr Jim Garner requesting that the Boardwalk File recently passed to him by the previous clerk should be returned to the Community Council in its entirety.

A date for the next meeting to be set once the Community Council has received the necessary paperwork to take the matter forward.AGENDA ITEMSBusiness Plan 2014/2015The minutes from the Business Plan Meeting were presented to the Council. After some discussion and taking onboard comments from local residents to Community Councillors, Cllr Mary Whitewright [Chair] proposed the Council go with Option 2 when setting next year's budget. This was seconded by Cllr Sue Reynold [Vice Chair]. This will give the Council a budget of 12,722 for April 2014/2015. Thus enabling the Council to maintain a contingency fund of around 5000. It was noted that this is the first increase in the Council's budget for seven years.

FRIENDS OF BROAD HAVEN SCHOOLFriday 29th November saw Christmas Festivities begin in School when we held our Christmas Bazaar in the school hall. In addition to our annual favourites such as the bottle stall, chocolate tombola and the cake stall, Class 5 entered into the Christmas spirit by devising and running six games. Among them were Rudolph Roll, Christmas Lolly Pop Sticks, Pelt the Penguin and Wipe the smile of his face! Their enterprising spirit certainly paid off as over 100 was raised on these games alone. Well done Class 5!We were also fortunate enough to receive donations for our prize draw from Valero, Vincent Davies Ltd, Folly Farm, Manor House Wildlife Park, Heatherton, Blue Lagoon and Wolfscastle Hotel. Prizes included, an Amazon Kindle, family days out, and gift and meal vouchers. The Friends once again donated a luxury M&S hamper. Santa arrived in the hall to the ringing of bells and a rousing cheer. He was very surprised to find, that this year, he had an impressive and very luxurious Grotto, in which to greet the children. Judging from the length of the queue to meet him, it was a roaring success and added to the festive feel. All in all there was a fabulous atmosphere and the evening and was very well supported. Between us we raised a staggering 1752. So, on behalf the Friend of Broad Haven School, I would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who bought and sold raffle tickets, supplied prizes, made cakes, donated bottles and chocolate, helped children make games, assisted on stalls and last but

not least to those of you who came along and supported us on the night, we couldnt have done it without you.

Thank you very much! Have a very Happy New Year!Jo Roberts, Chair

Recently, the Psychic Hotline and Psychic Friends Network have

launched hotlines for frogs. Here is the story of one frog and his discussing with

    his psychic.

A frog telephones the Psychic Hotline and is told, "You are going to meet a beautiful young girl who will want to

    know everything about you."

The frog says, "This is great! Will I meet her at a party, or what?"

"No," says the psychic. "Next semester in her

    What, already?

I have a confession to makeAnd I suspect Im not aloneI really dont like New Year

So forgive me if I moan

The old year wasnt badIt was just a little bit short

So before we start the new oneIve been giving it some thought

We havent finished the old yearYet the new ones coming fast

Those crazy resolutionsWere never going to last

We started with good intentionsRead more, lose weight, remember?

But before we could turn aroundIt was the middle of December!

Well its too late for anything nowLets try again next year

And be thankful for small merciesAt least were both still here

We didnt throttle each otherOr the kids or next doors cat

Weve got two good knees between usAnd were very grateful for that!

Well probably do the same thingsWhen it comes to twenty fourteenMake those impossible resolutionsBut some things I really do mean

I will get to targetAnd never again be fat

And I wont throttle him or the kidsBut Im not too sure bout the

    cat

So what are we celebratingWith our fireworks and old Big Ben

And staying up to all hoursWhen our bed time is half past ten

Is it the coming of spring?Well thats a long time yet

Theres many a day to comeWith gales, all cold and wet

My mother always told meWait until after Twelfth Night

Then youll notice the longer daysAnd the evenings a little more bright

BIRD WATCH Bird of the Month: RedwingIm writing this in November and today we had our first snow in Swansea (admittedly only a few flakes). Redwings are increasingly likely to visit our gardens during cold winters as hedgerows become stripped of autumn fruits and they struggle to find invertebrates in the frozen ground of rural fields. They can suffer high mortality rates during such cold and difficult conditions. Migrants from Iceland and Scandinavia, Redwings arrive into the UK in late October during the night. The birds we see in Wales are likely to be of Icelandic origin as these tend to winter further west. Redwings are often seen in flocks with other thrushes such as Song Thrush and Fieldfare, particularly in fields and open woodland. At night, several hundred may roost together in tall conifers calling to each other as they arrive; they quickly settle, however, unlike the much noisier Starling. Their call is a reedy tseep. The Redwing is slightly smaller than a Song Thrush and can be recognised by the prominent white stripe above the eye and a less obvious one below the cheek. Despite its name, Redwings do not actually have red wings but rusty-red coloured flanks which are revealed as it beats its wings in flight, making identification fairly easy.Did you know? The Redwing is the smallest of our European Thrushes. In just a few hours a flock of Redwings can strip a Cotoneaster or Holly bush of its berries. The Welsh name is Coch yr Adain. How to attract them to your garden: Redwings tend only to venture into gardens during the coldest weather. They may be attracted by windfall apples or dried fruit. You may stand a greater chance of attracting them if you have trees or bushes with berries. Conservation status: Amber due to their unfavourable conservation status in Europe.Garden BirdWatch data show that the reporting rate of Redwing peaks in late December or early January and that they are more likely to use gardens during very cold weather. On average less than 10% of Garden Birdwatchers record this species but in the first few weeks of January 2010 this shot up to around 30% in Wales. This autumn has been a good one for berries, so perhaps natural food supplies will remain plentiful and Ill have to wait another year before we can record our first Redwing in our garden.Make Your Garden Count! If you enjoy watching birds and other creatures in your garden, and want to help track their fortunes, then BTO Garden BirdWatch could be perfect for you. THE HAVENS COMMUNITY ALLOTMENTS AND GARDENS

What a year 2013 turned out to be!

Spring was delayed by 3 weeks of really cold weather, a summer period of 4 weeks without rain in Broad Haven (was that a record?), a lot of water carrying on site, some petty vandalism and the issue of planning consent for sheds on the plots with the PCNPA Planning Enforcement Officer entering the picture in October.A shed on an allotment is a must for most people in which to store tools and accessories since it is not practical to carry everything to site each time. Briefly, PCNPA would accept a large agricultural shed in the NE corner, but not individual sheds located at the same point! The problem is we have only annual tenure with PCC for the site so no grant opportunity and such a large shed would cost many thousands which we don't have. We hope PCNPA will adjust to the practicalities of this wonderful sustainable community project. We have the personal support of many leaders in the Havens Community including Fr Andrew Johnson and Peter Morgan. Indeed I am delighted to report the positive and supportive help given to us by the Havens Community Council in writing an excellent letter to PCNPA on this issue .It is true the site is not ideal being without water, poor access, no on site parking and very exposed, but it is the ONLY site available within walking distance of the center of Broad Haven and with 20 of the 23 plots in use each year since the start it shows that with determination we have made it viable and sustainable.

Writing this before Christmas my thoughts are already turning towards the new growing season and what new things I want to grow. However, I am making notes of what was successful and what I should do differently next year in particular 3 weekly succession sowing of lettuce and beetroot in small quantities! A big success has been perpetual spinach, but I must space the plants out better next year, as indeed I must with most of what I grow! That is not to say that it is all over at the allotment. I am picking sprouts, purple sprouting and digging up my end of season sowing of carrots. They are lasting well in the soil, no sign of carrot fly or slug damage so far! This cannot be said for the last of the potatoes. I should have lifted them before now so only myself to blame for not allocating enough time to the task. I am still cutting perpetual spinach and although now hardly growing at all it is still good to eat.We have closed down our website because it was little used and hardly ever visited so we could not justify maintaining it and the annual cost, albeit very small. Therefore, any of you that have kept a record of it and planned to take up an allotment plot in 2014 should contact myself.Happy New Year and good garden-

ing to one and all.Patrick Hellings, Chairman THCAG,

    BROAD HAVEN FESTIVE LIGHTING

    Dear Festive Lighting Supporters,

Well we made it, as promised in the Community Diary a couple of months ago we now have half of the lighting columns on the seafront fitted with festive motifs and we also have a Christmas tree decorated with festoon lighting. All this was achieved well in advance of the festive season's activities.

To date we have received many words of thanks for the work that has been done and also many acknowledgements that the seafront has that little bit of extra atmosphere. The comments have come from residents, business owners and visitors to the village.

It is hoped that by the time we switch off the lights in early January the lighting and tree will have deemed to have been a success and we can start planning for Christmas 2014 were the intention is to buy and install more motifs so that all the columns will be lit. Again this will be expensive but we hope to raise sufficient funds throughout the year to cover the costs.

Meanwhile if you have enjoyed the lighting on the seafront it is not to late to make a contribution and any donations no matter how large or small will be gratefully received.

If you would like to support this village initiative, donations can be made by either cheque or cash. (Cheques should be made payable to Broad Haven Festive Lighting Fund.)Your donation can be dropped off with Mostyn at The Ocean or if you wish please call me, Brian Henderson, on 01437 781273 and Ill come and collect it.Thank youBrian Henderson,On behalf of the Broad Haven Festive Lighting Committee
