The Happenings At Pittman Park
MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF PITTMAN PARK UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
MARCH 2019
That They May Be One Church Events
Sue and I have camped out for the last few days in front of the computer watching the proceedings of the United Methodist Called-General Conference which was held in St. Louis, Missouri. It was an historic event for our denomination, and we did not want to miss it. The basic matter being considered was whether to retain the language of our current Book of Discipline which prohibits the ordination of “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” and prevents clergy from performing same-sex unions or marriages. This is not a new question for United Methodists. In fact, the discussions over this matter date back to a General Conference in Atlanta in 1972. It has been a topic of debate at every General Conference since that time. As was expected, the delegates that gathered in St. Louis were strongly divided in their perspectives on this subject. The Conference affirmed by a 53% to 47% vote what is called the “Traditional Plan”. This plan was designed not only to preserve the present wording in the Book of Discipline, but also to establish a means by which these matters might be enforced. Of course, some were pleased with the outcome of the vote and others were grieved. I fall into the latter category. What do you do with such a divide? We love each other! This is our calling in Christ. Do you remember Jesus’ words, “This is my commandment that you love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15: 12) Jesus’ sacrificial love transforms all of life and is the very foundation upon which our lives are saved and the church is built.

In our worship just recently we considered Jesus’ prayer, “…that they may all be one.” (John 17:21) Jesus was praying this for his disciples 2000 years ago and I believe he continues to pray this for us today. He looks into the frailties of human nature and rightfully perceives how prone we are to being fragmented. His prayer was a longing for the world – and especially the church – to be filled with a divine unity. To me it seems that this certainly is something only God can make possible. But God is in the business of making things possible that we cannot at first imagine. I choose to believe that in some way Jesus’ prayer is calling us forward into a fulfillment of this unity built upon love! Where will we go from here? As a church, let us take up the cause with renewed commitment to put Christ’s love into action. Let there not be one person in the world (particularly in Statesboro) whom we do not love in the way that Christ has loved us. We will join together in worship and service to love each other, to care for our community and to reach out to the world in a way that reflects the very essence of Christ. Our episcopal leader, Bishop Lawson Bryan, has called a conference gathering to assist in our understanding of the actions of General Conference. This meeting will be held in Tifton, Georgia at the Tifton Campus UGA Conference Center from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 10th. We plan to take a bus/van from Pittman Park – leaving our parking lot at 9:00 a.m. that day. I hope that you will consider going. Call the church office to let us know if you will be able to attend.
Grace and Peace,
Park KIDS

God View: The connection between individuality and God’s character, as shown through God’s big story. God is one of a kind. He has no beginning and no end. Everything He has created is unique and one of-a-kind, including people created in His image. Every person is an original reflection of God in how they love, care for others, imagine, create, and solve problems. Jesus lived this out in the way He loved all people, and helped people feel like they had value no matter who they were or what they had done. We can reflect this in the way we live out how God created us.

Park STUDENTS: March Series Love God, Love Life, and Love Others: A Series about growing in your faith.
Have you ever wondered how to grow your faith? Well, the good news is, there isn’t just one way! And you don’t have to figure it out on your own—Jesus gave us all an example of what it looks like to grow our faith in God. In this series, we’ll take a look at a few things Jesus taught us that can help us grow a faith of our own. This is a five week series as follows: Week 1: Strong faith is about doing, not just knowing. Week 2: If you want a faith of your own, you can’t build it alone. Week 3: There’s a direct connection between growing and serving. Week 4: In tough times, God works in you so that God can work through you. Week 5: Dealing with doubt is part of growing your faith. Remember this: Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. James 1:22 NIV

Food Ministry Moment Pittman Park is the Backpack Buddies sponsor for Langston Chapel Elementary and Middle Schools. In this capacity, the church provides bags of kid-friendly food to over 87 kids each Friday so they do not have to worry about being hungry over the weekend when the school isn’t providing breakfast and lunch. As an extension of our service to these families, the Can Do Spirit Food Pantry is now sending home a voucher in each bag inviting the families of these children to come by the church for a parcel of food for the family. Since we are only seeing about 15% of these families take advantage of our offer, we have been able to expand our program. St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, across the street, is now including our vouchers in the Backpack Buddies Bags that they send to Mill Creek Elementary. To help pack bags or distribute food, contact Megan Hopkins at (912) 536-7920.
