Food For Thought

“To catch the reader's attention, place an interesting sentence or quote from the

story here.”

Page 6 The Green Sheet

In This House Here, in this house... I will never know the loneliness I hear in the barks of the other dogs 'out there'. I can sleep soundly, assured that when I wake my world will not have changed. I will never know hunger, or the fear of not knowing if I'll eat. I will not shiver in the cold, or grow weary from the heat. I will feel the sun's heat, and the rain's coolness, and be allowed to smell all that can reach my nose. My fur will shine, and never be dirty or matted. Here, in this house... There will be an effort to communicate with me on my level. I will be talked to and, even if I don't understand, I can enjoy the warmth of the words. I will be given a name so that I may know who I am among many. My name will be used in joy, and I will love the sound of it! Here, in this house... I will never be a substitute for anything I am not. I will never be used to improve peoples' images of themselves. I will be loved because I am who I am, not someone's idea of who I should be. I will never suffer for someone's anger, impatience, or stupidity. I will be taught all the things I need to know to be loved by all. If I do not learn my lessons well, they will look to my teacher for blame. Here, in this house... I can trust arms that hold, hands that touch... knowing that, no matter what they do, they do it for the good of me. If I am ill, I will be doctored. If scared, I will be calmed. If sad, I will be cheered. No matter what I look like, I will be considered beautiful and known to be of value. I will never be cast out because I am too old, too ill, too unruly, or not cute enough. My life is a responsibility, and not an afterthought. I will learn that humans can almost, sometimes, be as kind and as fair as dogs. Here, in this house... I will belong. I will be home.

A Message from ISCA—Research Study on HOD

“To catch the reader's attention, place an interesting sentence or quote from the

story here.”

Page 7 The Green Sheet

The information below is taken from the Health Chair Report by Anne Marie Kubacz published in ISCA‘s June 2014 Memo to Members. This information can be found on pages 44—48 in the Memo but some important information has been reprinted here for those members who may not have access to the Memo.

ISCA‘s Health Committee. in conjunction with the ISCA Foundation, is proud to announce our latest grant in conjunction with AKC Canine Health Foundation and the Bannasch Lab at the veterinary medical teaching college at UC Davis.

Throughout the years we have sponsored several studies on HOD (Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy) that have led ….. well frankly nowhere! In August 2013 I attended the AKC CHF Parent Club conference along with Dr. Linda Kalmar and Jan Ziech. We attended a lecture by Dr. Dannasch and found out that a study in HOD and Weimeramers was going on at her lab. At the conference, I mentioned that ISCA would be interested in learning more about sponsoring a grant with this lab at UC Davis.

In May 2013, a peer reviewed study was published in the Journal of the Veterinary Medical Association by Dr. Noa Safra et al entitled ‖Clinical Manifestations, Response to Treatment and Clinical Outcome for Weimeramers with HOD-53 cases‖. This was groundbreaking work, as it was the first peer reviewed article to conclude that in the Weimeramer, corticosteroids were superior to NSAIDs in the treatment of HOD.

It was exciting to learn how dedicated Dr. Safra and other members of the lab were in finding out more about HOD. Dr. Safra is a Weimeraner breeder who had a litter affected by HOD and that fueled Dr. Safra‘s passion for this study. After my first conversastion with Dr. Safra, I felt so positive that we were finally on a course that could yield results. After sending information about this proposal to the ISCA Health Committee and the ISCA Foundation board, numerous emails went back and forth with questions to which Dr. Safra promptly replied.

On April 22, 2014, ISCA Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding with AKC CHF, which is the first step in approving the research grant. Representing ISCA during the grant review will be: Anne Marie Kubacz, Connie Vanacore, Gary Brown DVM, Dr. John Savory and Barbara Riegle. The grant review process should be completed by June 1, 2014.

In anticipation of approval of the project, Dr. Safra and I have worked on the announcement of the project. This June issue of the Memo contains all the doocuments pertaining to the study.

What can YOU do? It is urgent that word about this new study be spread to owners of Irish Setters worldwide. Without HOD affected cases, this study cannot go forward. For those of you who own an HOD affected dog, PLEASE help us get samples to Dr. Safra. If there are any financial constraints preventing you from either getting or sending samples, PLEASE let me know and I will help you with Fed Ex shipment and costs associated with getting copies of radiographs or blood samples. Many times if you explain to your vet that you are participating in a research study, you vet can waive or discount fees. Please don‘t let finances prevent you from sending samples from your HOD affected dog.

Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy (HOD) is a canine developmental disease that affects dogs between eight weeks and eight months of age. Sick dogs exhibit swelling and pain in their legs with reluctance to stand or walk. In addition to bone pain, there are variable general signs including fever, lethargy, depression and loss of apetite. Diagnosis is based on the presence of HOD lines on radiographs together with signalment (breed, sex and age) and a history that rules out an infectious cause for the clinical signs. The most effective treatment is with corticosteroids (prednisone) and cases that are diagnosed and treated correctly have a good prognosis. However, relapses are common until the closure of the growth plates. Unfortunately, some severe cases are euthanized.

HOD is a painful and frightening disease that affects Irish Setter puppies—do your part to help ISCA and the ISCA Foundation be successful in our quest to learn more about this devastating disease.

Below is the announcement that we will be sending out via emails, Facebook and the ISCA website

.

A CALL FOR IRISH SETTER DNA SAMPLES FOR A 2014 RESEARCH STUDY ON HOD YOUR dog‘s participation in our study will help!

The ISCA Foundation and the ISCA Health Committee are excited to announce that a research study on Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy (HOD) is gearing up at the Bannasch Laboratory, at the veterinary medical teaching hospital, at UC Davis. This project is led by Noa Safra DVM PhD, the author of the article ‖Clinical Manifestations, Response to Treatment and Clinical Outcome for Weimeramers with Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy-53 cases (2009-2011) published in JAVMA on May 2013. The goals of this research are to study the role of the immune system in HOD disease manifestation and to uncover genetic markers associated with HOD in the breed.

Samples from HOD cases and HOD-free controls are required

The success of this project is directly related to the number and quality of DNA samples provided for research.

We implore all Irish Setter enthusiasts, worldwide, to participate in this unique opportunity to advance the health and wellbeing of the breed so dear to all of us. Please contact Dr. Noa Safra in order to send a sample. Confidentiality is ensured.

Health Beat— Bloat (GDV) by Diane d’Entremont

“To catch the reader's attention, place an interesting sentence or quote from the

story here.”

Page 9 The Green Sheet

In this newsletter, I would like to discuss the issue of Bloat. Many of us have owned a dog that has bloated, myself included. I will never forget that frightening experience. Meghan was 8 years old when she bloated: I was very lucky and was able to save her. I want to dedicate this article to those Irish we have loved and lost.

People often use the word "bloat" to refer to a life-threatening condition that requires immediate veterinary care known as gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), gastric torsion and twisted stomach. If the stomach twists 180 degress or less, it is called a torsion. A twist greater than 180 degrees is called a volvulus. Bloat can cause rapid clinical signs and death in several hours. Even with immediate treatment, approximately 25% to 40% of dogs die from this medical emergency.

When bloat occurs, the dog‘s stomach fills with air, fluid and/or food. The enlarged stomach puts pressure on other organs, can cause difficulty breathing, and eventually may decrease blood supply to a dog‘s vital organs.

What Are the General Symptoms of Bloat/GDV in Dogs?

Distended abdomen Unsuccessful attempts to belch or vomit Retching without producing anything Extreme restlessness Weakness Excessive salivation and drooling Shortness of breath Whining Looking at their side Cold body temperature Pale gums Rapid heartbeat Collapse

What Causes Bloat in Dogs?

The exact cause is currently unknown. Certain risk factors include: rapid eating, eating one large meal daily, dry food-only diet, overeating, overdrinking, heavy exercise after eating, fearful temperament, stress, trauma and abnormal gastric motility or hormone secretion. Some studies believe feeding from raised dishes or feeding from a dish on the floor may also be a contributing cause.

What Should I Do If I Think My Dog Has Bloat?

Bring your dog to a veterinarian immediately. Timeliness of treatment is paramount, since a dog exhibiting signs of bloat may actually have GDV, which is fatal if not promptly treated.

.How Is Bloat Treated?

Depending on your dog‘s condition, a veterinarian may take an X-ray of the abdomen to assess the stomach‘s position. The vet may try to decompress the stomach and relieve gas and fluid pressure by inserting a tube down the esophagus. If the stomach tube is able to enter the stomach, there is a rush of air and the swelling in the stomach subsides, bringing immediate relief.

Page 10: The Green Sheet - ISCNE 2014.pdf · first venture in the ring. ... OAP, THD Marty and Linda Haspel Obedience Trophies Chalmers Rally Trophy Glendine Sweet William JH, RN, CGC Rita

Health Beat— Continued by Diane d’Entremont

“To catch the reader's attention, place an interesting sentence or quote from the

story here.”

Page 10 The Green Sheet

How Is GDV Treated?I

If the stomach has rotated, emergency surgery is necessary to correct torsion. There are many complications that can occur both during and after surgery, including heart damage, infection and shock; intensive post-operative monitoring for several days is routine. Most vets will recommend that during this surgery, the dog's stomach be permanently attached or tacked to the side of the abdominal cavity in order to prevent future episodes

Are Certain Breeds Prone to Bloat/GDV?

Most dogs love to overeat if given the opportunity, so any dog, from a Greyhound to a Chihuahua, can get bloat. However, it is very rare for dogs that are not large, deep-chested breeds to be struck with GDV. This condition most often afflicts those dogs whose chests present a higher depth-to-width ratio. In other words, their chests are long (from backbone to sternum) rather than wide. Such breeds include Saint Bernards, Akitas, Irish Setters, Boxers, Basset Hounds, Great Danes, Weimaraners and German Shepherds. The majority of dogs that bloat are between 4 and 7 years of age, with bloat occuring more commonly in males. There may be a familial association with other dogs who have bloated.

How Can I Prevent Bloat/GDV?

Feed your dog several small meals, rather than one or two larger ones, throughout the day to avoid eating too much or too fast.

If appropriate (check with your vet), include canned food in your dog‘s diet. Maintain your dog‘s appropriate weight. Avoid feeding your dog from a raised bowl unless advised to do so by your vet. Encourage normal water consumption. Limit rigorous exercise before and after meals. Consider a prophylactic gastropexy surgery (which fixes the stomach in place, as described above) if you

have a high-risk breed While some websites sell bloat kits for home use, these are not a substitute for veterinary treatment. It is always advisable to seek veterinary advice before attempting any procedures at home as these may further worsen the dog‘s condition. If your veterinary clinic does not provide 24 hour emergency service, be sure to learn which emergency services clinic is nearest to your home and keep their phone number readily available. Do not delay in getting your dog to a veterinary hospital as soon as possible. It can be the difference between life and death for your beloved dog. Remember, you know your dog better than anyone. If he/she is not acting right, immediately head to the veterinary hospital - you may just save your dog‘s life.

Learning About Allergies— An Update and testimonial

In the February 2014 issue of the Green Sheet, I wrote regarding allergies and the various options available

for dogs suffering from allergies— this is an update that I am so excited to share with everyone.

There is a new allergy drug on the market called Apoquel, which is an non steroid medication that stops the

itching for dogs. It targets the itch and inflamation pathway and begins working as soon as 4 hours after the

first dose is given.

The drug works on all types of allergies—flea allergies, food allergies and environmental allergies.

This drug first came on the market in December 2013 and has become such a popular option for many dogs,

that currently there is a shortage in the US—only dogs that are currently taking this medication are able to

obtain the drug at the present time. The company that makes the drug, Zoetis, is working hard to ramp up

production and get sufficient quantities of Apoquel back on the market for everyone.

My Hannah was put on Apoquel at the end of February and it has been nothing short of a miracle. Her

itching stopped after a few hours and she was no longer licking or chewing her skin. Her skin began to

heal and her coat started to grow back after a few weeks. Although she will never be cured of her allergies,

this new drug is giving Hannah back a quality of life that she had been missing for many years. If you have

an allergic dog or know someone who does, I heartily recommend speaking to your vet about Apoquel. It has

the potential to be life changing for your dog.

I have included a picture of Hannah‘s hind quarter taken February 2014 before starting on Apoquel and a

picture of her 4 months later in July 2014.

Fun and Games

“To catch the reader's attention, place an interesting sentence or quote from the

Page 12 The Green Sheet

Did you ever play word games as a child? My mother taught me a game that she called ―Many Words from

One‖ in which you pick a large word, such as refridgerator, and try to form as many words as you can using

the letters contained in the large word. Words must have a minimum of 3 letters.

I thought it might be fun to play the game again, but this time, instead of using a single large word, how about

using the AKC registered name of one of your dogs?

I‘ll pick the name of my 1 year old Kelly. Her AKC name is:

CAPTIVA’S KEEPING THE FAITH

Some words are obvious— cap, keep, the, faith

Other words are more challenging— captain, taint, fasten

I‘m going to see how many words I can come up with. Right now, I have 70 words my list . So the next time

you are looking for something to do on a rainy day, play the ―AKC Name Word Game”

Have Fun!

CALLING ALL PHOTOGRAPHERS!

Do you have a photo of your Irish you would like to

share with your ISCNE club members?

It can be funny, sweet, serious. You can add a

comment to be printed with your photo.

I would like to start publishing photos of our precious

Irish Setters in future editions of the Green Sheet.

Please send your photos in—don‘t forget to include

the names of your Irish.

I can‘t wait to see all the special photos!

Legislative News/ Spring Specialty By Kyle Shaffer

Page 13 The Green Sheet

It‘s been a busy year for Mass Federation of Dog Clubs and Responsible Dog Owners and it‘s far from

over. Although the end of the formal legislative session was 7/31/14, there are still lots of legislative

actions taking place. Some bills have extensions and are still active. As the Green Sheet goes to press

all the current legislative updates are not yet posted.

But be sure to check out the ‗position papers‘ page of the website for all the most recent updates at

http://www.massfeddogs.org/Positions.html. .

Just a few notes on upcoming events: September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month. And 9/07/14

is Responsible Dog Ownership Day at the Statehouse where MassFed will attend. On 9/20/14 MassFed

will again have a booth at the PetExpo . And the Annual Meeting date is now 10/25.

Be sure to check out AKC‘s July 22nd communication as the USDA continues to implement and enforce

new pet breeder requirements at http://www.massfeddogs.org/Federal.html. And be on the lookout for

important updates in the future via e-mail.

Spring Specialty 2014

Seems we spend a tremendous amount of time waiting for the harbingers of spring to arrive: a patch of

green, the blossom of a daffodil, the tent to go up at the ISCNE Spring Specialty! And before you know

it…..after all the preparation…..It‘s over, in what seems to be, a ‗blink.‘

Ribbons and trophies have been handed out, catalogs marked, photos taken, and a scrumptious lunch and

social hour under the tent relished. All that‘s left are the wonderful memories and a heartfelt ―thank you‖ to

everyone who worked to make it a success.

As always to all the entrants….thanks for your support. Thanks to the Trophy donors for their generosity. To

Carol Levesque for serving as Show Secretary….without her volunteering, can you say ―no show?‖ To Claire

Marx for selling catalogs & handling advertising along with Boosters and Memoriams with Susan Watson

….they brought in a mean profit of $226. GREAT JOB! To Brenda Pierhal for organizing the buffet with Geri

Payne and Brenda Cohen...along with Jackie Allen for set up and clean up...we can thank them for a profit of

$270. And to Mary Bateman for organizing the Raffle and clearing an amazing $670….we salute you! And

last but not least, a heartfelt thank you to Susan Watson, who filled every imaginable ‗gap‘ that arose (like

trophies) while still committing to steward. These folks are your real winners…..the backbone of your

event…your volunteers!

And what kind of Show Chair would I be if I didn‘t give a nod of our next big Specialty….ISCNE‘s Harvest

Specialty Date is Friday October 3, 2014. Closing date for entries is Wednesday, September 17. Watch for

your premiums soon. See You There .
