They tried the front door, but it was blocked. They tried the windows too. No luck. And since they saw that the house was packed, they told the paralyzed man, "Tough luck. I guess they're full. Maybe next time." Is that what those four men did? Absolutely not. They would not be deterred by a full house or by a content crowd. They somehow crawled up on the roof, pulled the paralyzed man up with them, did some major damage to the home by digging a man-sized hole in the roof, and lowered their paralyzed friend down. Jesus forgave the paralyzed man's sins and healed him. One more touched by the forgiveness and love of the Savior! I can only imagine that the owners of the house were quite distressed when they realized some strangers were digging holes in the roof. This was their house! In Luke 5:17-26, Jesus was in a home

teaching. The place was packed, people

from wall-to-wall. The owner of the home

must have been thrilled that Jesus had

filled every seat and any remaining

standing room too. One thing was for

certain; no more people would fit. The

problem, however, was that there were

more needs in the community than that

little house could handle. Four men had

brought a friend who was paralyzed and

lying on a mat. They tried the front door,

but it was blocked. They tried the windows

too. No luck. And since they saw that the

house was packed, they told the paralyzed

man, "Tough luck. I guess they're full.

Maybe next time." Is that what those four

men did? Absolutely not. They would not

be deterred by a full house or by a content

crowd. They somehow crawled up on the

roof, pulled the paralyzed man up with

them, did some major damage to the home

by digging a man-sized hole in the roof, and

lowered their paralyzed friend down. Jesus

forgave the paralyzed man's sins and

healed him. One more touched by the

forgiveness and love of the Savior!

On May 6 in between services we will have

a congregational voters' meeting to discuss

a number of issues. The leaders of our

congregation - council, elders, building

committee, and evangelism leaders will

introduce a number of initiatives for our

congregation to prayerfully consider. As

you hear about these new possibilities and

are asked for your input and vote, it is my

prayer that you would see these leaders

and their proposals essentially like the four

friends carrying their paralyzed friend on

the mat. It is certainly true that Good

Shepherd, like the house Jesus was healing

in, is already rather full. Lots of people

have already gathered at 600 S. Enota

around Jesus, His Word of forgiveness and

instruction, and His life-giving, forgiving

Supper. Like the people in that house in

Luke 5, we could as a congregation tell

these leaders and their proposals, "Tough

luck. We're full. Maybe next time." As

the proposals are being presented on

May 6, it might seem to some like these

leaders are digging holes into the roof of

Good Shepherd.

I can only imagine that the owners of the

house were quite distressed when they

realized some strangers were digging

holes in the roof. This was their house! A

man-sized hole in the roof would present

a problem or two the next time a heavy

rain came along. Yet, in the midst of

their despair that their roof was being

destroyed, I have to believe that they

were quite OK with what happened.

I have to believe that Jesus had first

transformed their lives, and that is why

they invited Jesus to their house in the

first place. Trusting Jesus with

transformed lives, they most likely

stood in amazement as they focused

NOT ON THE ROOF, but on Jesus!

Indeed, Luke 5:26 says, "Then

astonishment seized them all, and they

glorified God. They were filled with awe,

saying, 'We have seen incredible things

the roof is caving in, but as we keep our

continue to see Him at work among us

Wow! What a year it has

been for Gordy and friends.

The Sunday school children

all learned that Gordy loves

peanut butter sandwiches

and has some funny ideas

about the Bible lessons.

However, it was through

Gordy’s quirky escapades

that we all learned what the

Bible lessons mean for us

today and how they apply to

our everyday lives.

The lessons for April took the

children through Holy Week,

beginning with Palm Sunday

and ending with the

resurrection of our Lord and

Savior. They watched video

clips from the movie “Jesus,” read the lesson

from the Bible and answered questions, then

participated in interactive activities in the

classroom that correlated to the Bible

reading. The awesome aspect of this

curriculum is that each Sunday, the children

are exposed to three separate applications of

the same Bible concept. Some children

connect with each one but some may only

Sunday School Pam Jovaag

connect with one. This is a vital way to

reach more children with God’s Word.

The final Sunday School for the current

school year will be on Sunday, May 20.

I want to THANK each and every one of you

for your support of our children. Plus, a

special Thank You to Doug Fuge (Gordy),

you are the ones who make this Sunday

lives of our Sunday school children. "His

StAfF (Students Together Actively Following Faith ) Susan Barkley

There are several passages in the Bible that reminds us how precious children are to Christ. At the end of April GSLC celebrated confirmation with ten of our children. This marks a new beginning for

these “children” as they continue to have a closer relationship with our Lord. Please remember these new confirmands, as well as ALL of our youth and children. Each one of them needs the support of their family, friends, and their church family. There are many ways that you can show your support through words, thoughts, and deeds. Have you ever heard the saying, “It takes a community to raise a child?” In the case of our youth the

“community” is the members of GSLC. You will be amazed at these young people each time you spend a little time with them. We are all blessed to worship with them and to be charged with the responsibility to help them along the way with their spiritual journey.

Congratulations to the Jr StAfF for your

studies, thought, and preparation that has gone into you being ready for confirmation!! May you ALL remember this time and continue to grow each day

to walk closely with Christ. Sr. StAfF, and

the rest of us, let us use this time to reflect on our confirmation or affirmation. May the choices we make be pleasing to God and may we always remember that we

are in His presence.

What’s been going on?

On April 1, several members of StAfF and

families meet at the Barkley home for an afternoon of fellowship and food. The group enjoyed the conversation, hikes on the farm, sports in the yard, video games, movie, and a devotion time.

Good Friday after service Sr StAfF and

friends met to watch “The Passion of the Christ” at the Barkley home. Those who attended were reminded of the cruelty that accompanied Christ’s ultimate sacrifice for us.

Easter morning StAfF and parents

assisted in hiding eggs for the younger groups. They enjoyed helping the younger children on their search and seeing the excitement of the day.

Congratulations to the Jr. StAfF on your

Confirmation.

May and Summer vacation

Spring has already sprung in NE

Georgia, the ending of the school year

and its many attendant activities in

May turn thoughts to summer

vacation and experiencing first-hand

the many blessings God has placed in

the world for our enjoyment. From the

church’s perspective, vacations result

in a net absence of attendees at

services and decreased offerings.

While the Lord’s work continues, the

financial resources decrease. Consider

planning ahead so that you may

joyfully respond to the blessings you

experience as you travel. Some

people put a check in the mail. Today,

more people write an electronic check

or even set up automatic deposits to

enable them to continue to the Lord’s

work through their home church. If

you desire to ensure your joyful

response to the Lord’s continuing

blessings occur while at home or

away, you can set up an electronic

transfer directly from your bank

account to Good Shepherd’s account

or indirectly by signing up through

Vanco Services, a free service of LCEF.

See Doug Fuge for details and a

We also cut plastic bags into strips to

During the month of March, 14 families (28

adults and 17 children) visited the food

served. Three Bibles were given to first

Praise God! We are created beings by His

hand and not some cosmic accident. We

were created to have a love relationship

with Him.

So how do we enter into a love relationship

with our Creator, Sustainer, Redeemer? It

is through daily prayer.

Fellowship with God does not mean

conversation over coffee. It comes from

the Greek word “koinonia” which means

sharing all things in common. Literally, this

means life. Such a love relationship with

our Creator implies that it is dependant

upon an unbroken communion with Him.

We begin as spiritual infants and then

embark on a greater quest for maturity,

surrendering self and allowing the Holy

Spirit to have more and more of us. There

are benchmarks along the way that allow

us to understand our growth, but inevitably

one of the latter stage pieces to fall into

place is the hunger for an active and

fulfilling prayer life. Nowhere are our

doubts and inadequacies more keenly felt

than in the call to pray.

Prayer is communion – a desire to enter

into a conscious and intimate relationship

with our Creator. It is also adoration,

thanksgiving, confession, intercession and

submission. Finally, it is being still before

God and listening to His Holy Spirit.

We presently have 29 ministries at Good

Shepherd with more to come. They will not

produce fruit without God’s blessings. It’s

fair to say that at any given time at least

10% of our congregation is experiencing a

crisis in their lives. They need to be

supported by prayer. It’s time we got on

with an intentional, formal, and consistent

prayer ministry.

This is a call for prayer warriors. The more

the better. To those who are willing to

answer this call to become a praying

congregation, we will offer a three week

(every Sunday) training class between

services beginning June 17..

James 4:2 says we do not have because we

do not ask. Please pray about this, become

a prayer warrior and part of an active

prayer ministry.

EASTER BRUNCH: What a great meal – and

what a crowd! A good time was had by all.

Thanks to all who helped.

CAR SHOW: Our car show was a

limited success, due to some

local competition. Those who

did come had a good time,

though. Breakfast was great,

the raffle went well and we had

some really neat cars to see.

Our expenses were covered and we still made

a profit, so all was well. We still have some

“cookies in a jar”, dip mix, cookbooks and

raffle tickets for Tastefully Simple items for

sale each Sunday. All proceeds from these

Parish Fellowship Judy Brookshire

items will also go toward our Christmas

Carnival.

BIG SUNDAY – JUNE 10: You won’t want

to miss this one! Mark your calendars and

save the date. Plans are being made for a

huge celebration – watch for details! We

will mark the end of VBS, have a

groundbreaking ceremony for the

proposed building and welcome our new

DCE to Good Shepherd. A picnic and

activities are planned as part of this

special day. Hamburgers, hot dogs, buns

and condiments will be provided – you are

asked to bring drinks for your family plus a

favorite picnic dish to share. There will

be activities for the youngsters and the

young-at-heart. It promises to be an

exciting day and we hope you will be able

to attend.

Please join us as often as you can. As

ever, if you have a suggestion for and

event or outing you’d like to see us

participate in, please let us know. The

next Parish Fellowship meeting will be on

Sunday, May 20 at 9:45 – all are

PRAYER LIST (continued)

Two families were

helped in March

through the “Helping

Hands ministry.

Many thanks to our Good Shepherd family that has supported us with prayers, e-mails, cards, and kind expressions of sympathy in the past weeks since my father’s passing into eternal life on April 12, 2012. Steve and I are blessed to be part of such a loving, caring congregation. God’s Blessings to you, Linda Rehnberg

On Memorial Day, it is

important to pause in

gratitude to all those upon

whose shoulders we stand. We

should remember with great

appreciation those who died

making helpful, positive

contributions — whether large

or small — throughout human

history. As Christians we

should be especially grateful to those whose faith,

service and love have enabled us to know the Gospel

and its vast implications for the entire earth.

Without our Christian teachers, pastors, missionaries

and the ordinary servants of Christ, we would not have

the Good News which is like a great light shining in the

world’s darkness. They have made sure Christ’s

precious Light has not gone out or been diminished.

Memorial Day is a day for us to think about the people

of the Light and to express to God our appreciation for

them.
