Lent – An opportunity to be refreshed!
Continued on page 7
S
By the time this issue of The Voice is published, Shepherd of the Hills will be in the midst of Lent under the theme Discipleship…Walking In His Footsteps…Learning HIStory. As Gail Black pointed out in the February issue of this publication, our congregation, guests, and visitors have a wonderful opportunity to ponder what it means to be a disciple of Jesus as we consider how Jesus has rescued us from our sins, given us His wisdom, calls us to worship, binds us together into a family, defines for us genuine truth, and forms our identity as His children. I hope you will join us for the midweek services that begin at 7:00 pm. Don’t forget the soup suppers at 5:45 pm in the Parish Hall. When I was a kid living at home in Minnesota, I really enjoyed our Lenten services. Most often, there was snow on the ground when Lent started. Lots of snow! As the weeks went on, the snow melted; slush and standing water were everywhere. Confirmation classes began at 4:40 on Wednesdays after school, and I remember complaining there was “too much church” going on during that time of year. My protests were, as you can imagine, all for naught. We didn’t have soup suppers prior to the service, but we did have coffee, juice, and goodies afterward, and most of our church family stayed and enjoyed the extended fellowship. I remember the traditional Lenten hymns and the somber setting of the service, and I really noticed there was something different about being in church at night. It seemed more focused for some reason. I could sing the hymn O Dearest Jesus, What Law Hast Thou Broken (LSB #439) almost from memory. I look back with fondness on those years. Of course, 34 years have passed since I left home, and I enjoy Lent more and more. I have learned to appreciate the meditative part of Lent that centers and grounds me in Jesus. I have preached many sermon series built on themes that remind me of what God has done for me in sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to be my Savior. He gave His life on the cross to save mine. He rose from the dead to give me eternal life! The same is true for you!

Lenten Soup Suppers Continue Until Easter Shepherd’s Fellowship/Soup Suppers are held every Wednesday prior to our Lenten worship service at 7:00 pm. This year’s Lenten theme is “Walking in His Footsteps: Learning HIStory,” which will speak to us each week about being Jesus’ disciples. Come eat a great homemade dinner, enjoy fellowship with your Shepherd family, and stay for the Lenten Service. It is a time of preparation for Jesus’ resurrection! (Please remember the special Meditation time begins at 6:45 pm in the Sanctuary.) Each Supper is hosted by a Shepherd ministry, and a free-‐will offering is taken to support the host ministry. Adult Information/Confirmation Class A new Adult Information/Confirmation Class will meet Sundays in the Administrative Board Room. You can attend all sessions or just drop-‐in to a class anytime through May 3. Current members are encouraged to attend this class as a “refresher.” Sanctuary Wall Crosses Can you guess which of the sanctuary wall crosses is the one described below? Each month’s Voice will feature one of the crosses we’ve received. We are also putting together a booklet with the description and picture; this will be fastened to the sanctuary wall for all to see/read.
Crosses from the Holy Land
~ Bender Two new crosses for our cross walls are from the Holy Land. They are fitting representations of the cities from which they come! The Jerusalem Cross is on a plate: a large Greek cross in the center with four smaller crosses surrounding it in each of the four corners—fancy to look at, just as Jerusalem was in Jesus’ day. The Bethlehem cross, on the other hand, is simple: small, plain—“O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah” (Micah 5:2). Margaret Bender writes of these two crosses: “In 1971, Margaret and Harold Bender, Sr. went to the Holy Land. The Jerusalem Cross plaque is from Jerusalem and the small wooden cross from Bethlehem.”
Enjoy One-‐on-‐One Time With Your Spouse The next Marriage Encounter Weekend will be offered March 20-‐22 at the Glen Eyrie Conference Center in Colorado Springs. Apply now at GodLovesMarriage.org or contact Bud and Cindy Amack for more information. They can be reached at [email protected] or 303-‐796-‐9119. Weekends fill up fast and pre-‐registration is required, so act now! Don’t miss out! Ushers Are Needed The late traditional service is in need of additional help with ushering. If you have an interest in this easy but important way to serve, please contact Bill Griffis, 303-‐741-‐5673 or [email protected].

Ministry Opportunities Priscilla Circle serves meals for families after funerals and assists with held-‐in-‐the-‐Parish-‐Hall wedding meals. If you are interested in being part of this circle as a helper or to bring food for these occasions, please contact Marge Duffy at 303-‐798-‐3343 or [email protected].
Loving Meals Ministry When someone in our Shepherd family has surgery or becomes ill, help with preparing meals may be needed. If you or someone you know could use this kind of help of small meals on a short-‐term basis, please contact the church office at 303-‐798-‐0711 and you will be contacted by one of our meal coordinators.
Contemporary Service Altar Setup/Cleanup Team This setup/cleanup team takes turns preparing the altar for the Contemporary services by filling candles and setting out the altar ware on Sunday mornings. After the service, things get put away. It doesn’t take much time and there are no meetings to attend. To be a part of this team, please contact either Kathy Baker at [email protected] or Steve Berscheid at [email protected].
The women of Ruth/Altar Circle prepare the chancel area in the Sanctuary for the traditional services. Communion preparations, changing paraments, filling candles with oil and vacuuming are just a few of the duties performed before services. On Communion Sundays, there is cleanup after the services. We get together for a short meeting and enjoy fellowship and devotion the third Tuesday of each month, September through May. We’re always looking for women to help with preparations and Communion cleanup. The work is shared among our members, so it isn’t a big commitment of time. Even if you don’t want to come to the meetings, please consider assisting with Communion cleanup after the services. Contact Carmen Smith at 303-‐770-‐3722 or Kathy Baker at 720-‐344-‐9229.

March 2015 Missions and Ministries
Missionary Updates – February 2015 Pastor Ed and Cherie Auger: “La Pita, Jinotepe, Nicaragua is a rural community situated on the outskirts of Jinotepe, approximately 7 kilometers beyond the city dump. It is another community that is often isolated in the rainy season. Teachers struggle to get to their schools. The sick and infirm cannot get out. Additionally, the community has suffered economically from poor harvests. The people have limited access to water, walking to river beds to collect water and carrying it home for drinking, cooking and bathing. In response to the need for water, a well project was initiated by Missionary Pastor Rufino Lainez with funding from Lutheran Church-‐Canada. The well is 50 meters deep and there are tangible signs of moisture. Men enter the well, one at a time, with a rope tied around them, to fracture and excavate the rock. The work is dangerous, time consuming, and tedious. It is hoped that a maximum depth resulting in an ample water supply is forthcoming. The well will provide water for approximately 50 households.” Pray for the people in La Pita, for more LCMS missionaries on world mission fields, and for the Augers as they train and mentor the natives in Nicaragua, Honduras and Costa Rica to be spiritual leaders in these countries.
Pastor Tim and Beth Heiney: The Heineys have returned to West Africa to share the gospel with the Maninka people. Pray for their resettling, their ministry that God will be preparing people’s hearts to receive His good gift of salvation, and for their safety and protection from Ebola.
Greg Holz: Pray for Greg and his family for restoration to good health.
Rev. Dr. Carl Rockrohr: We give thanks that Carl’s back surgery was successful. Pray for healing within the 3-‐6 month recovery period anticipated by his doctors.
Doug and Tricia Stoner: Thanksgiving for the progress of the Slovene team. “The Lord has opened up many opportunities for them.” Prayers are requested for wisdom with Natural Church Development in Slovakia, guidance for Doug as he leads them, wisdom for the Stoners and their congregation members as they write a constitution, especially on which leadership structure is best and that the appropriate college for Megan accepts her application.
Sharron Wilen: The 2015 volunteer training has begun with thirteen new volunteers. Pray for more volunteers and for unity amongst the team as they seek to honor and serve the Lord together and for favor with all those God entrusts to their care and that everyone who steps foot on the property will feel the presence of the Lord. Also pray that the necessary permits and funding be realized for the 64x48 indoor facility that will allow this ministry to provide effective ministry and training year round.
~MISSIONS/Missionary Support Ministry
All missionaries must raise their own living expenses. The funds are received from churches and individual donors. You or your small group may, at any time, give to a specific missionary by marking their name on “Other” on your Shepherd offering envelope. Consider individually or as a group adopting one of these missionaries. More information on the missionaries is on the church website (http://shepherdhills-‐church.org), or contact Maynard Buck, Mission Ministry Leader.
How Does Stephen Ministry Work? When someone requests a Stephen Minister, Ron Manuello, Judy Hillman, or Gary Stephenson, our Stephen Leaders, will meet with that person, explain what Stephen Ministry is, and help determine whether Stephen Ministry is the kind of care that person needs. A Stephen Ministry Leader then matches that person with one of our available Stephen Ministers. The Stephen Minister will then call that person and begin meeting with him or her for around an hour each week as long as the need is there. Everything a care receiver says to his or her Stephen Minister is kept confidential. The Stephen Minister doesn’t try to solve problems; rather he or she listens, cares, prays, and helps the care receiver find his or her path to healing and wholeness.
If you could use a Stephen Minister, please contact one of our Stephen Leaders; Ron Manuello (303-‐979-‐7776), Judy Hillman (303-‐798-‐2366), or Gary Stephenson (303-‐858-‐1973).
When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on. ~Thomas Jefferson

March 2015 Pastor’s Letter
I get the question often, Who is Jesus and what can He do for me? Most people around us are wondering the same thing OR they aren’t thinking about Jesus at all. We Christians have an answer for both of these groups. Jesus is the One who rescues people from the dysfunction in their lives. Jesus came to bring wisdom into our world where people seek answers. Jesus came to call us to worship and receive the gifts He gives in His Word, Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Jesus came to call us His very own family at a time when people are desperately seeking relationships. Jesus came to bring truth to a current culture that claims there is none. Jesus came to bring us identity at this current time when more people than ever seem not to know who they are and can’t find their purpose in life. Once again, I invite you to bring your families and friends to come and be part of the family of faith at Shepherd of the Hills, as we hear about what Jesus has done for us and what He still does. Come and hear the Good News our Lord and Savior has for you and the people you know who don’t know our loving Savior. Come and be refreshed! A Few Other Notes from Pastor Stoltenow……….. What an awesome school year we are having at Shepherd! Every day we have kids and parents coming and going at Shepherd who are busy learning about Jesus and participating in all of the activities offered through our Early Learning Center and Day School. When you have a minute, take time to visit with Mrs. Arldt and let her tell you what’s happening in our school. Take time to ask one of our awesome teachers what’s happening in their classrooms. Academics, sports, servant opportunities, family activities and singing about the love of Jesus happen all the time. God has blessed us in so many wonderful ways through all of our school ministries at Shepherd. Lutheran High School Choirs Today (February 11), our Active Seniors met for their monthly luncheon and program, and featured was the Jubilate Choir from Lutheran High. They sang a number of songs for us that were nothing short of magnificent. There was one piece that brought the familiar hymn Beautiful Savior into the arrangement; it literally had me in tears. Shepherd will be publishing the dates and times for Lutheran High’s Spring Concert, and I cannot recommend

highly enough that you go and hear these musicians sing and witness their faith in Jesus. Please look for more information in future e-‐blasts and announcements at Shepherd or on the Lutheran High School website (www.lhsparker.org). Two of those special events: Jubilate Home Concert Thursday April 23; LHS Spring Concert Tuesday May 12. Adult Confirmation/Information Class happening now We are in the midst of our Spring classes at Shepherd and I want you to know you are welcome at any time to come and be part of the learning. We have been very blessed over the years to have classes presenting our Christian faith to people who are seeking to learn more about or Lord Jesus. You are welcome and invited to come and join us for only an evening or participate in as many of the sessions as you want. If you are interested in knowing what topic we are studying, give me a call or send me an email at [email protected]. Youth Ministry/Confirmation at Shepherd Confirmation Class for our kids is in full-‐swing, and what a class we have! Pastor Zillinger and Eric Schallenmuller are doing a wonderful job and the kids and parents are learning about our Lord Jesus in the context of their families which is the very best way. I recently attended the quarterly Q & A in January and it was awesome! The families were together for a meal in the Parish Hall and then went over to the Sanctuary where the kids were eager to answer questions about the 10 Commandments. I don’t know how it could have been a better evening and experience. In addition, Shepherd’s youth have had all kinds of activities like the SHYP Lock-‐In, Xplosion, Valentine’s Day Parent’s Night Out, and other kinds of activities which bring kids together from all age groups. If you know any kids who are looking to get connected, please give Jodie or Pastor Zillinger a call at 303-‐798-‐0711. Momentum Stewardship Coming to Shepherd You will hear much more about Momentum Stewardship taking place here at Shepherd in the next few months. It’s time for our congregation to take the next step toward excellent management of all of life and life’s resources for the glory of God! Momentum is a program offered by nationally known expert, Dave Ramsey, who we know here

March 2015 Jack’s Corner
QUESTION: My 13-‐year-‐old daughter is over-‐weight. I know she has poor eating habits, but I think there is something more going on. Can you give me some possibilities?
ANSWER: There are genetic, physiological/hormonal, and nutritional factors which you should discuss with your doctor and nutritionist. I will not speak to these factors here.
You know your daughter well. If your "gut" tells you that there is something more, moms are usually right. Often, food is used to soothe hurts of the heart. The feeling of "fullness" is far more than simply a full stomach. It becomes a way of self-‐protection to relieve feelings of “woundedness” and disappointment. This need for relief becomes extremely attractive and eventually habitual. Food is an easy, legal, and available solution to the emptiness felt by many adolescent girls (See Jack’s Corner on eating disorders on line.) Watch how your daughter uses food. Does she eat when something hurtful has happened? Does she eat because she doesn't have much of a social life with her peers? Does she talk about dieting, but doesn't seem to have the strength of will? Does she use her size as an excuse? Is she often lonely and melancholy? If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, your gut is right.
Understand that your daughter has tremendous ambivalence toward food and her weight....food is both the friend and the enemy. On the one hand, she enjoys the soothing effect of eating. On the other hand, she knows that her appearance isolates her. There is the hurt of isolation, but there is also the safety of being over-‐weight. It is easier to blame the rejection and hurts of life on her weight than to confront what might happen if she were not over-‐weight. With the hurt of isolation comes the desire for soothing and, hence, more eating. This cycle can be hard to break. Depression often becomes a part of this downward spiral. Educate yourself in the area of eating disorders and watch for warning signs of depression and suicide. Both you and your husband should get involved with your daughter now. Be compassionate and candid about your concerns. Model healthy eating habits for her. Are you
over-‐weight? Diet and exercise with her. Formulate a plan with her and her doctor.
A parent does not have to think very hard to realize how a weight issue can overflow into the spiritual realm. In our "appearance is everything" society, it is hard for over-‐weight adolescents to truly believe they are loved by God. It is hard for them to place their wounds and longings in His hands. They often believe they are unlovable and undesirable....ultimately unforgivable. Deep, personal relationships are feared. Self-‐protection becomes god. Involvement with others is superficial at best. In addition to professional medical help, your family may need a professional counselor to help you understand these behaviors and use this struggle as an opportunity to grow in your relationship with Christ! You will have to interview potential counselors to see if they are capable and interested in guiding your family in this direction.
