Joy & Grace By Deacon Vic DeSloover

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength. Proverbs 17:22

In Joe Posnanski’s book, “The Soul of Baseball” he chronicles Buck O’Neil, a venerable player and the first African American coach in the major leagues. The author was fascinated with Buck’s resilience and most importantly his positive outlook on life. These observations came from what he learned on the many road trips throughout the South. The book opens with the story of a game in Houston that he and Buck attended. At the end of one inning, Houston’s right fielder, Jason Lane, tossed a ball into the crowd, presumably intended for a young boy in the stands. Immediately, a man lunged in front of the boy, snatching the ball. The crowd booed, and Joe seethed. Buck smiled and turned to Joe, telling him to not be too hard on the man. “He might have a kid of his own at home.” Joe relaxed for a moment but wanted to stay irritated at the man. After a moment, he turned back to Buck. Why didn’t he bring the kid to the game? Buck smiled and said, “Maybe his child is sick.” Try as he might, Joe knew that he would never get Buck to say a negative word. Here was a man who refused to be a victim, to ever see life in any other way than as a gift, a marvelous occasion. Take it from Buck. At every opportunity, be joyful, and look at the bright side. You only go around once in life. You can spend it looking for the negative or use God’s gift of life as an opportunity for joy and grace.

The Good News   From St. Joseph Community School

All School Fitness Activity The St. Joseph Community School students and staff

got together for an All School Activity. We were on

teams with our Family Groups, which are groups of

students from PreK-8th grade with 1 or 2 teachers who

meet once a month to do an activity together. This

month, we were together twice. During our all school

activity we had relay races ranging from the crab walk to

running. The students had a lot of fun competing

against each other in a friendly atmosphere and cheering each other on.

World Down Syndrome Day

March 21st is Down Syndrome Day and was first recognized in 2006. On this day

people around the world participate in activities and events to raise awareness and

advocate for the rights and inclusion of all of those with Down Syndrome. St. Joseph

Community School celebrated this day by wearing their Team Arlo Shirts or blue/yellow

to show support for all those with Down Syndrome. They also wore crazy or brightly

colored socks to signify the extra chromosome that people with Down Syndrome carry.

We read stories that had a theme of inclusion and held discussion about always

including others. We want all students to remember, “Everyone is different, that is why

you are so special.”

Read, Read, Read! The students in our building have been working very hard! As part of their routine

during reading time, the students have been working on their fluency skills. One of the

ways that they work on this is by partner reading. The students are paired with another

student and read to each other until the timer goes off. Then the students switch roles.

Mrs. Samec’s class is pictured below participating in a partner read. The students love

to read the 2nd time through to see if they can get further than they did the first time!

We are very proud of how hard they all have been working.

Missoula Play The Missoula play this year was The Snow Queen and was performed on March 22nd

and March 23rd. The students participated in auditions on Monday of that week. After

auditions they received their lines and began practicing. They had a practice Monday

through Thursday after school and then were ready for their dress rehearsal Friday

afternoon. It is always amazing to see how quickly they learn their parts. Great job to

all of the students, Mrs. Westwater, and the Missoula directors for putting on such a

great show!

Friends in Faith,

Now that the snow has melted our days seem to be flying by! This semester is centered on the first theme of Catholic Social Teaching: human dignity. Our students have learned and discussed issues such as abortion, human trafficking, the death penalty, and saints that provided a voice to these unjust and complex issues. In our exploration on the topic of abortion we discussed the pro life and pro choice movements, the Supreme Court ruling on Roe vs Wade, read of survivors of late-term abortions, and a brief history of St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, a pro life and anti abortion advocate. In our exploring of human trafficking, our students discovered the “how and why” this multibillion dollar industry has overtaken our nation and ways in which pimps/traffickers often gain trust with their victims (a process referred to as grooming) as a means of coercion into this trade. To better understand its complexity, we learned about the life of human trafficking survivor Rebecca Bender, various Catholic organizations that provide counsel and trauma rehabilitation, and the life of St. Josephine Bakhita, patroness of sexual assault survivors. In our exploration on the topic of capital punishment we learned of it complexity and discussed various martyrs and saints who were put to death for their beliefs. We then discussed the life and death of our religion’s founder and victim of the death penalty, Jesus of Nazareth. Our students also discussed the significance of Holy Week and walked the “Stations of the Cross” to better understand the purpose of Easter and Jesus’ Passion.

In sum, we have covered some very dense and deeply controversial topics for our freshman and sophomore classes. However, I feel in understanding the basic elements to these issues, our youth will have a better understanding of what it means to be “pro life” and the morality-mindset of a modern-day Catholic.

YOU’RE INVITED ! Hello everyone! I can't believe its been nearly two years since I got to spend my internship semester and summer in New Hampton, Ionia, and North Washington. I look very fondly on my short time there and I hope to be back soon! After what seems like only a very brief time in seminary (6 years!) my path as a seminarian is ending as I begin to embark on a hopefully long and joyful life as an ordained minister for the Archdiocese of Dubuque. On Saturday, May 25 I will be ordained a priest at Saint Raphael Cathedral in Dubuque at 10:30am. Praise God! On Sunday, May 26 I will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at my home parish, St Joseph in Marion at 4pm. I would like to invite all of you, who have been important for me in this journey to the priesthood to these celebrations, especially to my Mass of Thanksgiving. Just an fyi, 5 other men in my class will be ordained on Saturday, so the Cathedral will be packed. If you would like to watch the ordination, the Archdiocese will be live streaming it live from their website. While it may not be feasible to come to the ordination, I would be especially honored if you could make it to the Mass of Thanksgiving in Marion, and the reception afterwards. I have been touched by so many lives in my years through seminary by you, the great people of the Archdiocese of Dubuque and it would mean a great deal to be able to celebrate with you all. Please pray for me as ordination approaches. If you would like to contact me, I can be reached by email at [email protected] or by mail at: 130 Meghann Dr., Marion, IA 52302 Thank you for all your prayers, support, encouragement, and all you've taught me about what it means to be a priest in service to the People of God. God bless, and I hope to see you soon!

Deacon Tyler

Gone Fishing By Karen Bonfig

What are your plans for the spring and summer months? Many people make plans that include being around water. Swimming, boating, a picnic near a lake, kayaking, canoeing, sitting on a dock or blanket and just enjoying the beauty of the sun shimmering on the water, and of course, we can’t leave out fishing as a part of a day spent near a lake or river. With Lent being over, we are enjoying the glory of the Easter season! Thoughts of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are tucked away neatly in the “been there and done that” compartment of our brain and we have moved on to more uplifting thoughts centered around Resurrection, Ascension and Pentecost. Thrown into the gospel readings for the Easter Season is a “gone fishing” story. We will hear it read on May 4th and 5th and it’s one of my favorites. Jesus has risen, but is evidently not with his disciples constantly as He was before His death. So we find seven of the apostles together at the Sea of Tiberias, the same body of water that he had been at when He called Peter, Andrew, James, and John to follow him and become fishers of men, instead of fishers of fish. Amazingly, in the gospels of Mark (1:17-20) and Matthew (4: 19-22), it says that at once, immediately, they left their nets and their boats and followed him. What “lure”, what “captivating bait” did Jesus use to get these men to, leave behind their occupation, their relatives, and their own agendas? The Gospel says: they left their boat and their father…” underlining is mine) and took up the invitation for a new “job/lifestyle” as he said to them: “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” That day, they were caught, hook, line, and sinker by Love Himself!

Now, following the Crucifixion and Resurrection, here they were again, back at what they knew…what gave them a sense of accomplishment and stability in their lives that had been rocked with insecurity, fear, rejection, and doubts while still hanging on to the threads of faith throughout their discipleship that Jesus truly is the Messiah, the One sent by God to redeem the world. Peter says, “I am going fishing.” They (the others who were there) responded: “We also will come with you.” They know this sea, they’ve been there before and they have recorded the “hot spots” in their minds. Evidently that day, it wasn’t living up to its past potential. Someone from shore calls to them and asks if they have caught anything. Their answer is honest and probably sounds pretty weary from having given it their best shot…but not having anything to show for their efforts. “No” is their simple reply. So not realizing that this man is Jesus, they hear Him call from shore: “Cast your net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” The fisherman followed orders and came up with so many fish that they couldn’t pull the net in. It was then that Peter recognized it was Jesus who was on shore and he dove into the sea to get to Him as fast as he could.

Jesus feeds them a shoreline breakfast but then calls Peter aside to offer him the peace of reconciliation. Not long ago, Peter had denied that he even knew Jesus. Not once, not twice, but three times! Now Jesus asks Peter that same number of times, “Peter, do you love me?” Peter responds with, “ Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Not once, not twice, but three times! Peter understands the repetition of the question and with his response is given the reconciliation he so desires! But with that healing came a request to not only be a fisher of men, but a shepherd to them: “Feed my lambs. Tend my sheep. Feed my sheep.”

Peter took the challenge and became what Jesus asked of him. After Pentecost, he and the others in the Upper Room left the safety of that space and journeyed instead into the streets where they met the same things they had experienced before Jesus’ Crucifixion: insecurity, fear, rejection; only this time there were no doubts. They were on fire for the Lord. They faced their difficulties with courage, commitment, and the knowledge that Jesus was with them through it all, even to their death, which for most was martyrdom. They must have found the right bait, the right side of the boat, the right nourishment to reach the hearts of Jesus’ lambs and sheep. We, too, are called to be fishers of men, to bring others to the table of the Lord so that He can feed them with His Word, and His Body and Blood. Our call during Lent was to change our lives and hearts. It wasn’t just to give up something, but instead to give something…something of ourselves to others that would bring them into the net of Jesus, so that they could be caught and pulled into the net of Jesus’ love and mercy. The thing that normally draws me more deeply into my faith is the attraction of someone that I know, speaking, or acting, with a gravitating enthusiasm that entices me to come closer, learn more, and be taken in to a place where there are others, like me, who are open to being caught in the Lord’s loving embrace and mercy. Following the Great Commandment of loving God and loving neighbor is an reminder of our Lenten commitment to hang on to our nets, choose the right side to lower them, and bring more into the fold. Hopefully, to be “gone fishing” is part of your daily plan!
