Retirement of our Editor

The long time editor of this newsletter, Charles Jennings, has decided to hang up his computer beside his fire helmet. I asked Charlie for a note to give a bit of history of the newsletter and he wrote the following.

“I was fortunate enough to be in the

of the Golden Age Communicator over those

I believe that our retiree association is

one of the best, if not the best to be found in

newsletter. But this should not be a surprise

as I always maintained that the North York Fire

I continue to regard Jack as a good friend, a gentleman and a brother. Anyone wishing more information please call me at 705-456-4242 Yours truly David Gazey

Hearts Delight, Newfoundland

I made the trip to the Rock on Friday thanks to Westjet and their cramped seats. When I left North York it was thirty degree temps and when I arrived here at the cabin we are sporting five degree night time temps. This is to my liking as it sure makes for better sleeping when you just add another log to the stove. Today we are seeing warmer weather arriving with a high so far of fifteen. Hope you all have a real good Summer and hope to see you all in the Fall at the luncheon. Stan Boyd

*** From Bill Sullivan

My wife has these days when she wants us to talk about things. We were discussing aspects of our future, so when it was my turn I asked, "What will you do if I die before you do?" After some thought, she said that she'd probably look for a house-sharing situation with three other single or widowed women who might be a little younger than herself, since she is so active for her age. Then she asked, "What will you do if I die first?" I replied, "Probably the same thing.”

A Piece of History

Pictured here is a section of a wooden water main, aka a hollowed out log, found under the streets of Portland. Firefighters would have to dig a hole to reach the pipe, then drill through the wooden pipe to intentionally create a leak. The hole would fill with water so the fire engines could draft from that ‘pit’. This brings an all new meaning to the term "Shoveling hydrants"! After the incident the firefighters would seal the hole with a wooden plug, hence the term fire plug".
