Survivalist Guide Ecclesiasticus 1:18

The fear of the Lord is a crown of wisdom, making peace and perfect health to flourish; both which are the gifts of God: and it enlargeth their rejoicing that love him.

Aloe Vera

There is nothing on this planet that offers the amazing variety of healing benefits granted by aloe vera. It is truly a God given gift to humanity. Aloe has been used for many centuries dating back to ancient biblical times and can be found quite fervently in scripture. Because of this, aloe can still be found in many of those regions throughout the Middle East and Africa, even today. There are many reasons why someone would want

to have access to this herb in a survival situation.

The native environment of the aloe is the desert where the greatest challenge to its survival is the high heat and prolonged dryness of these areas. This is why an aloe vera plant contains about 99.5% water; it actually stores it in the leaves like a cactus. Not to mention the fact that it is a natural source of electrolytes making the aloe an absolute must find in a survival situation when there is drought. You know, those rare cases when you forget to bring Gatorade to a desert.

We also can’t forget that the gel from the aloe vera plant is a

natural anti- inflammatory, which has a soothing effect on the pain, swelling and itching of burns and skin irritations. Aloe’s polysaccharides also give the gel its humectant, or skin-hydrating powers, which can increase the moisture content in skin and speed healing. Finally, aloe’s antibacterial qualities may help prevent infection. It has been reported that burns treated with aloe vera healed almost 15 percent faster than burns treated with silver sulfadiazine – a common pharmaceutical medication. This would make it a miracle cure for radiation burn.

Turmeric Root

If there’s one herb/spice you should always have in your medicine or food cabinet, it’s turmeric. What’s turmeric? Turmeric is a super-spice used primarily in the Asia Minor region (specifically India) for thousands of years prior to the discovery of its amazing medicinal benefits. Important to note, turmeric is a member of the ginger family and can be found in the powdered form or in it’s original root form. Today, turmeric is often used in mustards, curries, sauces, butters, and cheeses. More importantly, turmeric is used today as medicine.

This particular spice is known across the world for

it’s extraordinary benefits and is often crowned “the king of all herbs”. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory/antiseptic properties and has been proven to cure various forms of cancer, prevent the hardening of arteries, decrease body fat, treat Alzheimer’s, prevent the formation of gallstones, kill parasites, heal the brain from alcohol induced damage, heal/cleanse the liver, protect the heart, ease the pain of arthritis/tendonitis, treat leprosy, relieve depression, and among many other things treat headaches.

Externally, turmeric can be used to treat ringworms, eczema, and psoriasis, heal bruises, burns, bug bites, rashes, poison ivy, chicken pox, and treat various forms of infections. To use turmeric externally, mix turmeric with water, honey, or aloe vera gel and apply to affected area. To consume turmeric in tea, simply add a teaspoon of turmeric powder to your preferred herbal tea. Those privileged enough to have access to turmeric root may make turmeric tea by chopping up a thumb-sized piece of turmeric root and boiling it in a tea kettle or pot of water with another herb of choice. Aside from this, turmeric can also be added to soups, stews, vegetable mixes, and taken in the form a capsule/supplement. Turmeric is very strong so to be wise start out taking small doses of turmeric and work your way up to higher doses.

Sister Ahmanaha’s Kitchen Arroz con Gandules (Rice with Pigeon Peas)

Pigeon Peas

Pigeon peas, a popular vegetable in tropical

countries, are healthy and versatile. Ripe pigeon peas are a common ingredient in dhal, an Indian split-pea soup. Immature pigeon pea seeds, also called green pigeon peas, are reputed as an old folk medicine remedy for liver and kidney ailments, but they offer real health benefits today. They are a nutrient-rich addition to rice or a variety of other foods and can supplement your diet with protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals.

1. In a medium size pot add the oil, tomato sauce, alcaparrado, sofrito and sazon*.

2. Cook over medium heat for 4 minutes.

3. Add all other ingredients, and enough water to cover the rice 1" above the rice line. Start with 1 teaspoon of salt stir and keep adding and mixing well until you are satisfied with the taste.

4. Bring to a boil and cook over high heat until most of the water is absorbed.

5. Once the water has been absorbed, stir gently from bottom to top - once or twice only, cover and turn the heat down to low. Finally, cook rice for 30 minutes or until tender.

6. Often meat is a combination with this dish, add in your choice of chicken or beef. Beware of added pork, which is the most common meat addition, if somebody else is making the dish for you.

Words Of Wisdom

Supplicate my Spirit By Sister Labiya

Forget me not through my travail Hear my mourning’s and my cry for help Through my battles, give me a sure heart In times when I feel fear, replace them with comfort Rebuke the devil from out of my midst And let not him return again Strengthen me Uplift my spirit unto you Let wisdom flow through my bowels all the daylong Make me to walk in your judgments Fill me with the spirit of my savior that my name may be amongst those of the living Save me from mine affliction Keep me from mine own hurt Be gracious unto me And merciful Knowing, I am but born of a sinner I was raised by sinners But by you, and your name and your marvelous works, have I been called. I meditate upon you daily I seek your truth and your ways I lift up my voice unto you Yet the devil hinders my prayers Teach me to walk in the steps of the righteous I believe in you I trust in you Your judgments are just You are a righteous power, Most merciful of all living Forgiving the sins of sinners who trust in your name Help me in my time of need Give me supplication that I may live and not starve until death Supplicate my spirit with your words of truth Let me not trust in mine own understanding But in your supplication, which you have given unto me abundantly Therewith, make me to trust in. For mine own understanding is wickedness and evil Make me to walk in your truth, and understanding. Selah.

Nature’s Remedies

Various Uses Activated charcoal is charcoal that has been

treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms in materials such as wood, coal, rye starch, or coconut shells. To give you an idea just how powerful this substance is at absorbing toxins, one standard 50-gram dose of activated charcoal has the surface area of 10 football fields. It also encourages bowel movements, so it can help to rid the body of toxins rather quickly. When taken internally, it attracts the positive ionic charges of toxins and poisons causing them to bind to the charcoal. They are then escorted out of the body via the eliminative channel of the intestines.

.

Various Benefits

Food poisoning comes from eating foods that contain germs like bad bacteria or toxins, which are poisonous substances. Bacteria are all around us, so mild cases of food poisoning are common. You may have had mild food poisoning with diarrhea and an upset stomach commonly known as a stomach bug or stomach virus. Symptoms can start quickly within 4 to 6 hours and can last a few days without proper treatment. One of the key components in dealing with food poisoning is eliminating the bacteria that have entered the body. We can do this easily and effectively by using something called activated charcoal.

Active Charcoal

Ecclesiasticus 38:4 The Lord hath created medicines out of the earth; and he that is wise will not abhor them.

*  Removes  heavy  metals  like  lead  and  aluminum.  *  Deodorizes  foul  smells.  *  Removes  fungal  toxins.  *  Removes  symptoms  of  traveler’s  diarrhea.  *  Reduces  ulcers  in  the  stomach.  *  Can  be  used  as  toothpaste  to  whiten  teeth  and  eliminate  foul  breath  since  it  kills  bacteria.  *  Removes  parasites  and  bacteria  from  the  body.  This  includes  bugs  that  cause  everything  from  a  stuffy            nose  to  more  invasive  parasites.

*  Reduces  gas  from  eating  beans  and  other  gaseous  foods.  *  Eliminate  many  microorganisms  and  chlorine  from  drinking  or  bath  water.  *  Removes  pharmaceutical  toxins  from  the  body.  This  includes  aspirin  overdose,  accidental  household  toxin  ingestion,  and  heavy  metals.  *  It  has  been  used  for  hundreds  of  years  in  cases  of  food  poisoning.

Brazilian nut trees are found in the non-flooded forest regions of Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru. They are indeed one of the longest living, tallest trees in all the tropical rain forests; they can grow to 50 meters tall with large trunks and wide umbrella like leaves at the top. They’re thought to have the life span of about 500 to 700 years. The prizes of these trees are the nuts which are encased within thick dark-brown color individual shells. And inside these nuts is highly beneficial mineral called selenium. Selenium is used by the body to create important antioxidant enzymes that help prevent cellular damage from free radicals. Free radicals are natural by-products of oxygen metabolism that are seen to contribute to the development of chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease. Selenium is also critical for proper thyroid functioning and plays a role in the immune system.

It was discovered that selenium was an essential

mineral for the prevention of diseases in humans and animals. Several recent studies seem to indicate that in areas where there is an abundance of selenium in the soil, the rate of cancer is less. It is interesting to find that fluoride actually opposes the action of selenium in the body. While it has been shown that increased selenium intake seems to eliminate fluoride.

Vitamin Watch

Are you experiencing muscle weakness, poor vision, loss of appetite, poor circulation, impotency, dry skin, hair loss, unsteady walking, abnormal eye movement, anemia, hyperpigmentation, have weak red blood cells, or complications related to the liver, brain, or bone marrow? If so you are likely victim of a severe vitamin E deficiency.

Scientifically known as Tocopherol, this particular

vitamin and anti-oxidant is involved with the body’s metabolism and immune system. Vitamin E has been proven to improve the body’s use of vitamin A, protect against cancer, relieve menstrual pain, slow aging, regrow hair, protect the body against heart disease, improve blood circulation, fight diabetes, boost brain function, reduce bad cholesterol, protect artery walls, and speed up cell regeneration.

.

Vitamin E also plays in a major role

keeping the nervous system healthy, improving blood glucose metabolism, and keeping the skin youthful looking. Vitamin E or tocopherol can be found primarily in eggs, nuts (almonds, walnuts, peanuts, etc.), sunflower seeds, olives, spinach as well as other green leafy vegetables, paprika, and cayenne pepper. If you are a victim of any of the above health related issues, then simply eating nuts or leafy green vegetables regularly could help you to heal properly.

Super Food: Brazil Nuts

These two elements seem to fight one another for dominance. The ability of selenium to protect against fluoride toxicity has been confirmed in lab tests. Selenium has also been shown to stop damage to the heart, liver, kidneys, and ward off the severe mental deterioration that accompanies excess fluoride.

One study also showed that selenium increased the rate of elimination of fluoride in the urine. It’s also surprising to note that just only two Brazilian nuts a day is sufficient enough to get all the selenium you need. Anything more can actually be dangerous to your health from over toxicity.

Nature’s Remedies Cont.

Oil is one of the most important versatile substances available on Earth. According to the Bible (Sirach 39:26), aside from water, food, fire, clothing, and a few other principal things, oil is one of the major basic necessities needed to sustain life. With that said, olive is one of the most precious oils in the world. Olive oil has been used around the world since ancient times in several ways. Ancients used olive oil as a morning beverage, lamp oil, bath oil, a natural polish, ointment as well as moisturizer, as a natural cleanser, and in many other innovative ways. Natives of the Mediterranean and Asia Minor regions, in which the olive tree is native, continue to use olive oil in a variety of ways today. On the other hand, in other parts of the world, the same can’t be said.

Olive oil is primarily used in cuisine and as a

moisturizer and it seems as if it’s countless uses/benefits have been lost or forgotten with time. Aside from what most people know about olive oil, this particular oil can be used in over a hundred ways and cure up to 60 well-known diseases. Olive oil can be used as a natural food preservative, furniture (leather) polish, shoe polish, hinge lubricant, paint remover (from hands), to make soap, remove chewing gum from non porous surfaces, and waterproof boots. Externally, olive oil can be used to reduce acne, treat sunburn, alleviate muscles pains (when slightly warmed), treat boils, rashes, leprosy, itching, small pox, eczema, hemorrhoids, fungal infections, firm/tone skin, treat dry skin/hair, clear stretch marks, and kill lice.

Olive Oil

Internally, olive oil can be used to thoroughly cleanse the colon, lower bad cholesterol, aid in digestion, expel worms, relieve earaches, make arteries more elastic, prevent heart disease, protect red blood cells, cure/prevent cancer, improve memory, relieve itchy throat, lower blood pressure, oil pull, and increase overall life span. Olive oil can also be used in salad dressings, various food recipes, yogurts, dips, homemade toothpaste, deodorant, skin creams, and to prevent food from freezer burning (when used as a protective seal). Make your life a little bit longer, healthier, and smoother by incorporating olive oil into your everyday life.

The Hebrew Health Tip of The Week: Sleep Well, at least 6 to 8 hours each night

Getting enough sleep is just as important to your health as eating the right food, drinking clean water, getting enough sunlight, and exercising. Getting enough sleep allows the body to heal, boosts the mood, improves memory, increases attention span, reduces stress, increases energy levels, and increases the overall lifespan. When we deprive our bodies of sleep we increase our chances of suffering severe health issues, the most severe side effect being death.

Sleep deprivation leads to obesity, weakens the immune system, causes premature aging, muscle degeneration, stunts growth in children, increases stress levels, causes depression, heart disease, diabetes, irregular heartbeat, hallucinations, increases the chance of heart attack, impotency, impaired judgment, increased blood pressure, poor concentration, decreased creativity levels, and many other life threatening health issues.

Sister’s Crafts Corner: Hand Sewing: Mommy Edition Moby Wrap

You may have come across mothers’ holding their babies in a blanket, with no hands! This neat carrier is called a Moby Wrap and, even in its simplicity, the price for one can reach anywhere from $47-$200! Now that doesn’t make much sense when you look at the actual design does it? It looks like a long blanket wrapped in a fancy way. Well that’s exactly what it is and today we’ll learn how to make THREE of these comfortable carriers for less than half that price.

Materials:

ü 5 Yards of 60/40 cotton/polyester fabric (Ask for assistance in any fabric store, 50/50 should work just as good)

ü Scissors ü Fabric marker/chalk

STEP ONE: Fold the fabric in half like a hot dog. (Fold from right to left) Your fabric should be roughly 30 inches wide and five yards long. STEP TWO Next, fold down and in half like a hamburger, so it is now 30 inches wide by 2 1/2 yards long. STEP THREE Be sure the open ends are on the left side and bottom side.

STEP FOUR Take your measuring tape and measure 20 inches. Make a small mark with your marker or chalk at 20 inches. Move your measuring tape up a foot or two and mark 20 inches again. Continue doing this all the way up the fabric.

STEP FIVE Next, cut the fabric lengthwise the entire 2-½ yards using the small markings as a guide to try and get a straight cut.

You can be DONE here or…. Hem- Fold one of the short ends in (about ½’) and sew straight across for a neat hem. Do this for all ends.

In the end, you will have 3 Moby Wraps- each of them 20 inches wide and 5 yards long. I suggest using a marker or a patch or something similar to mark the center of the Moby Wrap, as this will help you put it on.

Here is a video tutorial on how to wrap the Moby. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhBmqw7npYU

The Green Thumb: Garlic

2

Only plant the largest cloves (you can use the smaller ones to cook with).

Plant the garlic 2 inches in from the rim of the

container, spacing the bulbs 5 inches apart in all directions. Use a piece of bamboo to make planting holes that are 3 inches deep. Plant one clove per hole, with the flat side down and the pointy end up. Backfill the hole with soil, making sure that the tip of the clove is about 1 inch below the surface. The garlic may sprout and then die back over the winter, but don't worry. It will re-sprout again in the spring.

Caring for the Garlic over the winter In very cold areas, you can place straw over the

surface of the soil during periods where temperatures stay below freezing for an extended period of time. However, be prepared to remove it when temperatures rise, as the straw tends to stay damp and it will rot the garlic cloves. Skip using straw if you have wet, mild winters. In dry climates, don't let the soil completely dry out. Keep it about as damp as a wrung out sponge.

Caring for the Garlic in spring In spring be sure to remove straw (if using it)

as soon as temperatures rise above freezing. When the garlic begins to grow, fertilize it every 3 weeks with a dilute liquid organic fertilizer. Keep the soil consistently moist. Cut the scapes off just after they emerge to encourage the bulbs to grow larger. The bulbs will be read for harvest in early summer when the bottom 1/3 of the leaves has yellowed.

1

So we’ve sprouted a few beans and got our hands a little dirty with our cuttings, it’s about time we step it up a notch and really dig into the world of gardening and, Ahayah willing, harvesting our own food! The focus will be on growing in containers because I’m aware that many of us are limited for space. Hopefully we have a balcony to set up a few plants or, as a last resort, a windowsill might work. I won’t give tips on growing indoors with special lights, but know that it is possible and there are many websites to help you get started. Don’t ever think you can’t grow your own food!

There are a number of vegetables easy to start in containers, being as it is autumn we’ll focus on garlic. Mid-October is the perfect time to sow your garlic, so don’t delay! Garlic is among one of the easiest vegetables to grow although it requires patience as you’re first harvest won’t come for 9 months. No worries, you should be motivated by the early shoots that spring up -which from time to time you can snip and save for soups and salads. So let’s begin! Try to pick from a bulb that you know is organic, from a reputable farmer’s market or a gourmet store.

Planting the Garlic The pot will need to be at least 20cm (8 inches) in diameter with a similar depth, to allow for good root growth. Simply fill your chosen container with multi-purpose compost and incorporate some fertilizer.

Break the garlic heads apart, being careful to keep the papery wrapper around each clove intact.

Genesis 1:12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it

was good.
