• The Giver is set in a utopian society.• A utopia is a society in which
everything is supposed to be perfect. No problems ever occur, and there is no pain.
• Often these types of societies take away the rights of the people in the society in order to control their actions.
About the Author
• Lois Lowry is the author of The Giver, and this novel was her first science fiction novel.
• When writing this novel, Lowry wanted to create a safe, comfortable world that would cause her readers to think about their own lives.
• Lowry won a Newberry Award for this book.
About the novel
• In this novel, a young man named Jonas lives in a “perfect” society.
• At the age of twelve, all children are given their life assignments. Jonas is given the job of the Receiver of Memory.
• During his training, Jonas learns that his community is not as perfect as he had once thought.
• Jonas begins to question everything he has ever known.
