In late June, Port Lympne willonce again transform it’sgrounds into a fully fledged

music festival for the people of Kent. This time however, there will be no hintof the debacle caused by Zoo8 theprevious year. Red List LIVE has beenset up and run by a team of industryexperts who will make sure that thefestival runs smoothly and will be a joyfor all those who attend.Part of the 200 strong line-up has beenconfirmed already with aptly namedheadliners The Wombats, appearingalongside The Zutons, British SeaPower, The Damned, The Undertonesand many more, including a wholestage of unsigned talent from aroundKent. The festival was launchedas part of The AspinalFoundation, with £5 ofevery ticket and 50% offestival profits going directlyto the charity in order tohelp their efforts inpreserving the mostendangered species on ourplanet, which appear on theIUCN’s ‘Red List’. The hope isto raise at least £100,000 forthe charity during the first

year of the festival.

Red List LIVE will host 15,000people with plenty of camping availableover the weekend; a complaint raisedby the public during Zoo8.It is hoped that by running thisfestival, the public will be more awareof the efforts of the IUCN and of thoseof The Aspinal Foundation. Festivaldirector Eddie Hill has said “It is a factthat some of the world’s most beautifulanimals are also the most endangered.Red List LIVE will be a fun event for aserious cause - we want to help protectand celebrate these amazingcreatures.”For more info, visit:

The idea of the Sellindge Musicfestival was conceived in early 2003by Andre Double. He wanted to

combine his love for music alongside hisGrandfather's ambition of staging amusic festival.By 2007, the music at Hope Farm hadcontinued to grow, with a number ofoutstanding bands now appearing and2008 saw the realisation of a dream forAndre and the team as Sellindge tookplace as a fully-fledged music festival forthe first time. Headlined by Idlewild, joined by the BBC and hosting adedicated VW field, an ever-expandingteam of enthusiastic volunteers ensuredthat Sellindge '08 was a huge success.

Having established itself as a well-lovedmusic event and one to which thousandsof visitors will undoubtedly return, theteam are already hard at work ensuring

that 2009 will be a momentous year formusic, Sellindge and Kent. The line-up is taking shape, andSupergrass have been announced asfestival headliners alongside other majoracts from the likes of Red LightCompany, Marina and the Diamonds &Thomas Tantrum.

Exploding onto the scene just two years ago,The Enemy have already secured their placeas one of Britains top young bands. With

many festival appearances under their belt, a hostof awards and the pride of their debut album goingstraight to the number 1 slot, they could beforgiven for taking a break from their hecticschedule. However, on the verge of their secondalbum being released, the band are still touringhard, not least as support for brit legends Oasis aspart of their arena tour later this year.During March & April, the lads will be performing ata plethora of small venues, bringing them to ourvery own Winter Gardens (Margate) on April 5th.We caught up with drummer Liam Watts for achat...SINCE FORMING IN 2006, YOU’VEEXPERIENCED QUICK SUCCESS. WHAT IS ITDO YOU THINK THAT THE PUBLIC WARM TOIN YOUR MUSIC?

“It has all gone really quick, it doesn’t seemlike 2 years have gone by. We’ve achieved a lotbut we’ve also put the hard work in. I hope the

public see us as quite an honest band, we workvery hard and don’t take for granted the fact thatpeople supporting us and going out buying ourrecords has got us where we are today. At the endof the day we’re still normal people, our songs areabout the real world, inspired by day to day life.Success hasn’t altered our view on reality. A lot ofpeople have identified with what our band is about.I think we have a good understanding with peoplewho are into our band. We make good tunes andgive it 110% at all times, and the fans come to thegigs and go absolutely mental. Their support andpassion is what makes our music relevant.”ANDY & TOM USED TO SELL TVs IN THEIRPRE-ENEMY DAYS, AND CITE THOSE DREARYTIMES AS THE INSPIRATION TO FORM ABAND. WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING NOW IFYOU HADN’T FORMED THE BAND?

“If we hadn’t formed a band we would probablybe in exactly the same position to be honest. As soon as we left school we felt obliged to geta job and start paying our way, without theband I don’t think anything else would havedrastically changed our situations. Apart frommaybe a win on the lottery!”

APART FROMUNEMPLOYEMENT FIGURES,COVENTRY WAS FAMOUS FORTWO-TONE MUSIC DURINGTHE LATE ’70s & ’80s, AND INPARTICULAR; THE SPECIALS.ARE ANY OF YOU A FAN OFTHE MUSIC?

“Yeah we are definitely fans ofthe specials. It was a bitbefore our time but Coventryhas always celebrated it’s two-tone roots and their music wasalways apparent when wewere growing up. Also thefact that their lyrics are asrelevant now as they wereback in the day inspired uswhen we started writingsongs.”

SO ANY CHANCE OF AN ON-STAGE APPEARANCE WITHTHEM AT THIS YEARS VFESTIVAL?

“As nice as that would be Ithink we would like to enjoy itfrom out front. We’ve neverhad the chance to see themlive before so this might beour only opportunity. It willbe a big highlight of thefestival season for us.Coventry will be proud.”

‘GHOST TOWN’ (BY THESPECIALS) WAS WRITTENABOUT HOW BAD COVENTRYWAS IN 1981, YET THE MUSICVIDEO WAS SHOT IN LONDON!IS COVENTRY REALLY THATBAD?

“To be honest the fact it wasshot in London was somethingI’d always questioned too.Although since being in a bandI completely understand all thefactors that would have had abearing on the video.Sometimes things aren’t aseasy as people think. Theproblems in Coventry musthave been apparent enoughfor them to write a song, butI’m sure they love Coventry asmuch as we do. They werejust commenting on what washappening at the time. Thepeople of Coventry have greatspirit and drive when times gettough. It’s our home andwe’re proud.”

...AND HAVE YOU HEARD OFTHE SAYING ‘SENT TOCOVENTRY’, MEANING ‘TO BEIGNORED OR SHUNNED’!?

“I’ve looked into where thissaying comes from a few timesand there’s no realexplanation. I’ve read itoriginates from the civil war,or from executions inCoventry. Coventry is alsobelieved to have had a womanride around naked on a horse. It’s funny how things gettwisted. Nice thought though.”

YOU ALWAYS WORK HARDAND TOUR REGULARLY. INFACT, YOUR CURRENT TOURSEES YOU GIGGING WITHOUTSO MUCH AS A BREAK! WILLYOU SLEEP FOR THE WHOLEOF MAY TO RECOVER?!

“Sleep? What does thatmean?! Haha, I don’t thinkwe’ll be taking any time off fora while yet, there’s a lot ofhard graft to be done butwe’re well up for getting stuckinto it. I’ll just have to get apensioners half hour inwhenever I get the chance.”

NOT LONG AFTER, YOU’LL BEOFF TOURING AGAIN ON AMASSIVE ARENA TOUR WITHONE OF THE BIGGEST ARTISTSOF OUR TIME; OASIS (+KASABIAN). THAT’S GOT TO

BE A HIGH POINT OF YOURCAREER… ARE YOU NERVOUS?

“Not nervous just buzzing! It’sdefinitely one of them pinchyourself moments. The bandwe idolised and grew up to,have asked us to support themon their tour. Kasabian areone of our favourite bands too.If we weren’t playing we’dhave bought tickets and beenright at the front. Bring it on.”

THE GALLAGHERS ARE KNOWNFOR HAVING A ROCK ‘N’ ROLLLIFESTYLE, SO WILL YOU BEUPPING YOUR GAME TOMATCH THEIR HEDONISTICWAYS ON TOUR?

“I’m sure this tour will have itsmoments haha. It’s got themaking to be carnage. Butwe’ll make sure we’re on formfor the gigs, that’s alwayssomething that’s reallyimportant to us!”

LET’S TALK ABOUT YOURSECOND ALBUM; ‘MUSIC FORTHE PEOPLE’.THE SINGLE; ‘NO TIME FORTEARS’ IS DISTINCTLYDIFFERENT FROM PREVIOUSMATERIAL AND BRINGS IN ARAWER SOUND THAT GIVESTHE SONG REAL PUNCH. ISTHE ALBUM GOING TOREFLECT THIS STYLETHROUGHOUT? WHATBROUGHT ABOUT THISPROGRESSION?

“It’s just been a naturalevolution, we’re a couple yearsolder and wiser and a lot moresettled into what we’re doing.

We were never gonna try andremake our first album, wejust wanted to get in thestudio and make stuff that wewere excited by. We didn’tconsciously think we wanted abigger sound, its just the waywe’re sounding at the moment. On this album there are somemassive moments along withsome darker ones and thereare nods to the first album, although we have definitelytaken a step forward. We’vemade something we aremassively proud of.”

TOM HAS BEEN QUOTED ASSAYING “WHEN IN A BAND,YOU SHOULD BELIEVE YOUARE THE BEST BAND IN THEWORLD”. DO YOU STILL FEELTHAT WAY? ..AND DO YOUTHINK YOU WILL EVER GETTOO BIG AN EGO THINKINGLIKE THAT?

“We all still feel that way! Theday you stop believing inyourself is the start of the end. We’re very ambitious andthere’s a lot we want toachieve. Believing in yourselfis the most important thing.Egos are for people who needto compensate for theirdownfalls.”

DO THE ENEMY HAVE ANYENEMIES? WHAT ABOUT NME?

“We’re quite chilled out wouldyou believe, we don’t have anyenemies as such. We’re justfirm believers that ifsomething’s wrong or someoneis taking the piss you have tostand up for yourself.”

Up Close & Personal: Syd Arthur’s Liam Magill

p14 | The Gig Guide | April - May

BY ABBY [email protected]

What an eventful month, I’m sure you willagree. I spent the afternoon of Saturday21st March having a chat with Liam

Magill, guitarist and vocalist for Syd Arthur at TheQuarterhouse in Folkestone. Having alreadyconquered Canterbury, they are now preparing totake the rest of the UK by storm. Slightly nervousand not sure what to expect from the interview, Ibreak the ice by showing him one of myillustrations from my book; ‘Ugly Bugly’. Helaughs (in a good way) and we dive in:I HAVE HEARD THAT YOUR MUSIC IS PRETTYUNUSUAL, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE IT?

We have such an eclectic sound. It is amixture of the types of music that we all listen to;folk, 60’s, 70’s, world music, funk and jazz. Iwould say that it is psychedelic fusion. SYD ARTHUR IS AN INTERESTING NAME,WHERE DID THAT ORIGINATE?

The name came from a book that we were allreading at the time “Siddhartha” It is anallegorical novel by Hermann Hesse which dealswith the spiritual journey of an Indian boy calledSiddhartha during the time of the Buddha. If youcan get hold of it read it, it’s a deep read.WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THEQUARTERHOUSE?

It is an amazing venue that will allowmusically minded people from all over to comeand play in front of an audience that’s on thesame wavelength. I am all for places that nurtureup and coming bands as it’s hard to get intoindustry let alone gig at a place that looks half asgood as this place.WHERE DO YOU PLAY IN CANTERBURY?

A place called the Orange Street Music Club,it used to be called Local Hero’s but it changed itsname and it actually works in conjunction withThe Quarterhouse. We have a residency there

which is handy to say the least. We also have alot to do with Lounge On The Farm that’s afestival held in Canterbury. We have a tent thereevery year that is called The Fuurthur Tent. It’s areal, earthy, peaceful tent that we decorate, builda garden and have all kinds of bands play inside. It’s pretty amazing with the attention that itreceives. Check it out if you’re in the area onJuly 11th - 13th www.loungeonthefarm.co.ukWHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO BANDS THAT AREFINDING IT TOUGH OUT THERE?

You have to live and breathe your music. Itcan’t be just a hobby as you have to throweverything that you have into getting where youwant to go, blood sweat and tears. Don’t give upat the first hurdles, keep going as your dreamsare well within reach. Get in touch with placessuch as The Quarterhouse and get as many gigsare you possibly can, it’s the gigs that will makeyou well known and open more doors.WHERE DO YOU PLAN TO GO FROM HERE?

Recording and releasing our album at theend of 2009 sometime, no date set as of yet andconcentrating on organising events for TheFuurthur Tent @ Lounge On The Farm. Festivalsare obviously the thing of the summer and we willbe gigging at as many as we can fit in.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE BANDS?I have 2 favourite bands, Bassekou Kouyate’s

who released an album called Segu Blue, theirmusic is a great influence to our sound. My alltime favourite band is Hatfield and the North, aniconic band that ruled the underground musicscene in Canterbury during the 1970’s. Every timeI play their CD I have to listen to it till the CDstops. They were the most creative and fearlessmusicians around at the time and they live on inour music. Check em out;www.hatfieldandthenorth.co.ukWHAT INFLUENCES YOUR LYRICS?

Everyday life, music is a definite therapy andI’d even go as far to say it’s our religion. We liveand breathe it so the lyrics in our songs are howwe are feeling at the time. Creative expression isthe soul to music. In a nut shell Syd Arthur are going places fast, reminding me of a young Blind Melon. Theirsound is unique to our ears and their personalitiesare expressed within both the lyrics and theiramazing performances. If you get a chance to gosee them, do so. It’s an experience that youwon’t forget in a hurry and your feet will still be

tapping a few days after. I wish you all the best,oh and guys... don’t forget the little people! For more info about Syd Arthur visit

Artist Profile: Louise Orfila

p18 | The Gig Guide | April - May

At only 16, Louise Orfila has achieved quitea name for herself and been activelychasing her dream in the music industry.

Since the age of four, she has always been aperformer; training with the ImaginationTheatre Group and appearing in many musicalproductions along the way. Today, living inFolkestone and a member of the St EdmundsSchool in Dover (a specialist college for thePerforming Arts), she continues to study musicand is currently at grade 6 in piano.

It was in 2005 however, at the age of thirteenwhen Louise started to write her own songs.Given the task of producing a project for school

based on the First World War with an emphasisof producing something unique, Louise decidedto have a go at writing a song. The song wasrecorded at the school studio and submitted aspart of her course work. It was the strongpositive feedback from this, that convinced herto pursue a career as a songwriter. The songwas sent off to the Royal Marines Band Servicefor their views.

Whilst waiting for a response back, Louisewanted to busy herself writing a song forcharity so that she could make a real difference.Opting for the BBC Children in Need appeal, she started work recording the track at a localstudio, with the premise of selling the CD at herschool to raise funds. The production team atthe studio were so impressed with the initialidea that they devoted hours of their time tofinalise and master the track. The finishedproduct sold very well, with all proceeds goingdirect to Children in Need (CIN) and the smallquantity held by a local music shop sold outrepeatedly and they struggled to keep up withdemand. Total sales exceeded 400 copies.

This generated a lot of local media interest forLouise and helped promote her release locally, helping to become an unofficial theme song forCIN and many companies embraced the idea.Morrison’s sold the CD on the day itself, AshfordTown Centre Management asked Louise toappear at the turning on of their town centrechristmas lights and Folkestone police stationasked her to sing at the launch of their CINfundraising event. The BBC did get wind of thefundraising efforts, and invited Louise to appearon TV on the live evening programme, but withsuch short notice she could not make thestudios in time.

Page 19: The Gig Guide Issue 8

Shortly after the success of hercharity single, Louise receiveda reply back from The RoyalMarines Band Service. Theywere so impressed with Louisethat they asked her to singalongside the band at theirannual Christmas concert, heldat The Leas Cliff Hall,Folkestone. The event wascompletely sold-out andfeatured Louise singing severalsongs from the Lloyd-Webbermusical; 'Chess'.

The Director of Music (MajorPhil Watson RM) was verypleased with Louise, not onlyproviding her with lots ofencouragement during therehearsals, but also forwardinga copy of her WW1 song to theDirector of Music of the entireRoyal British Legion (CaptainDavid Cole RM (Rtd)) to see ifthey could use it for theremembrance services. TheRoyal Marines are keen to workwith Louise in the future.

Louise has a passion formusical theatre and hasperformed in several largeproductions. In 2007 she wasselected at the age of 14 toplay the lead female part of‘Scaramouche’ in a locallicensed production of the WestEnd musical ‘We Will RockYou’. This was one of the firstproductions of the showoutside of the West End andthe average age of the castwas 20 plus. All seven nights of

the show sold out.In recognition of her talents, the Seary Trust (a specialisttrust to support youngperformers) awarded Louisewith a grant enabling thecoaching of a professionalsinging coach from London’sWest End to work with Louisefor a year. Recently, this hasbeen awarded again givingLouise a further year!Having such a professionalapproach to her work hasmade Louise a role model forher peers. Kent CountyCouncil asked for her to be arole model for young people, and invited her to present thisyear’s ‘Tri Angle Awards’(achievements for youngpeople in Kent).

Always writing new material, she has now penned over fortysongs and released a minialbum on local independentrecord label ‘Somebody’sMusic’, selling over 350 copies. You can catch Louiseperforming regularly aroundEast Kent, not only as a soloartist with her songs, but alsoin large stage productions

where she has played manylead roles.

Louise has worked further withThe Royal British Legion underthe Direction of Captain DavidCole RM (Rtd). Artist Profile: Springtide Cavalry

April - May | The Gig Guide | p21

Folkestone trioSpringtide Cavalrybegan playing and

writing in late May 2008,making their debut gig atThe Downtown Diner,Ashford the followingmonth. Band membersKevin Iverson(Vocals/guitar), AndrewHucksted (drums) and (newrecruit) Sean Hardy(bass/vocals) all grew upwith similar musical tastesand formed the band, blending quintessentiallyBritish influences like theThe Jam, Dogs and TheWho with American indierock like Get up Kids andRival Schools. They worked hard during2008, playing gigs at Zoo8,Ashford's Create Festivaland respectable slots atmod rallies across thecountry. 2009 is already offeringbigger steps and largervenues, thanks partly to therelease of their new EP inMarch, which was recordedat Kents renegade studios.Featuring split vocalling, tight drums and crispstabbing guitar lines, the EPshowcases not only theenergy they produce livebut the talent all 3 have at

writing decent, memerabletunes.STC are the type of bandwhere you want to get thelogo tattooed on your arm, embracing the same fashionsense, the attitude andtheir way of life - they aremore than just a CD onyour superstore shelf.

Feature: Eccentric Music in Whitstable

p42 | The Gig Guide | April - May

Last month's KentGig Guide featureda single review of

'Save The Jellyfish', by TheTrouser Trumpets. Thereview described theWhitstable based band as“something unique, bringingsomething fresh in what canbecome a staleenvironment”. It seems thatthis appraisal hit the nail onthe head, as a 'staleenvironment' is exactly whatbought about the formationof this eccentric band.Founder member anddrummer Jean-ClaudeKeeley, explained;

“Whitstable is a vibrantmusical town, and there isalways live music onsomewhere. All of the bandsare pretty good, but therewasn't a lot of variety onoffer, it was either Blues orFolk. We decided to inject abit of fun into theproceedings”. Along withTrombonist IJ, The TrouserTrumpets made their debutlive appearance two yearsago in Whitstable's premiermusic venue; The OldNeptune. After gatheringtogether a brass section toreplace a bass guitar, because, “I never met abass player I liked”, theband entertained a packedvenue with their eclectic mixof 20s Jazz and their ownslightly anarchic take on

modern rock classics. “We are huge fans of The

Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Bandand Spike Jones, so wecovered a few of their songsas well as a couple ofcontemporary songs, including our Tango versionof the Beatles' Hey Jude andT-Rex's Ride a White Swan”.The latter two songs havebecome crowd pleasinglegends, but it's their self-penned ‘Save The Jellyfish’that has become the band'santhem. Described by BRFMDJ Mick Kenton as “Themost epic song sinceBohemian Rhapsody”, it hashelped to set The TrouserTrumpets apart from bandsthat, perhaps, takethemselves too seriously.

“That's the whole ideabehind the band”, Keeleytold us, “Music is supposedto be fun, and we wanted toform a band that would haveaudiences dancing andlaughing, too”. Step forwardsinger and front man SteveGraham who spent manyyears on the stand-upcomedy scene, and was theorganiser of last year'shugely successful WhitstableWinkle Comedy festival.Steve joined the band 18months ago and soon foundthe right balance between'Comedy and Crooning', withjokes and commentarybetween songs, giving theband a Vaudeville vibe. TheTrouser Trumpets areimpossible to Pigeon-Hole

into a genre, and thiseclecticism in their musicwas highlighted recently atthe various festivals they'veplayed. Essentially coveringold Jazz standards, the bandwere invited to play atBroadstairs Folk Week lastyear – and were voted themost popular band on thecircuit! This popularity wasduly rewarded with apromotion from their pubvenue last year to the mainstage at the Pavilion Hotelthis August.

“I think it's down to thefun element, and the factthat we can adapt to mostaudiences. We have done amedieval folk version ofBlack Sabbath's Iron Man inthe past, and we're working

on a folk style medley ofsongs by The Smiths”,Keeley told us. The bandare also busy working on aself-penned summer singleand rehearsing for thefestival circuit which seesthem return for the thirdyear to the main stage ofThe Faversham Hop Festivalin September, and anappearance at TheRochester Sweeps festival inApril.

Frank Zappa, another ofthe band's influences, onceasked, “Does HumourBelong In Music”, and here'sa band that agree. “Ofcourse it belongs in Music, and we simply bring that tothe set. Audiences want tobe uplifted, not sent away

from a gig reflecting onheavy lyrics. The overallvibe may be flippant but themusicianship in the band isspot on”, Keeley told us.This ten piece band thatboasts 'the best brasssection money couldn't buy'- including legendarysaxophonists LawrenceFletcher and Peter Cook –will certainly have youdancing and laughing intothe night, and if you want toknow more about TheTrouser Trumpets, visit theirwebsite atwww.trousertrumpets.co.uk

Gig Guide Verdict:

Black Market Karma have a dreamy sound to their music, akinto the likes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Boy Hits Car,especially evident on the second track of this EP, The GigGuide’s favourite: ‘It’s Gone’.Well produced and written, each track is pleasing to the ears.I hope BMK get to play a summer festival or two, as theirmusic is perfect for listening to whilst laying back on warmgrass of a hot sunny afternoon. This short EP is a hint at the promising career BMK have aheadof them and I hope they continue to write songs of thisstature.

Whilst Circle of Rage’s music will not appeal to everyone, for thehardcore fan it’s a welcome addition to the music scene. The fivepiece have known each other since childhood and that bond hashelped keep their music tight. Vocalist Tommo’s politically soakedlyrics scream effortlessly over each track and the music is of a hightechnical standard. Our favourite on this EP is ‘Ignorance is This’with it’s intricate wailing guitar solos. If you get a chance, try and catch COR live where you can reallysee the power of their music. The EP is original and fresh, sounding nothing like other copycatbands out there today.

What do I see? Behind the cartoonised characters on thealbum cover, Sizen are a bunch of very talented andprofessional musicians. After a slightly mediocre start, thethird track; ‘_Still me’ highlights Sizen’s ability to pen a goodmetal track with plenty of catchy hooks. The track ‘Water ItDown’, bringing in elements of one of their cited influences;Pantera, with guitar riffs sounding close to their hit; ‘Walk’.Towwards the end of the album, ‘True To Yourself’ softens thetone slightly and fits more into the (now mostly defunct) nu-metal genre. This is a great album for those who like to hearthe vocals in their metal.
