The Great PretenderNew Year’s Eve with...

Every time we book this show wedo it with the same trepidation. There’s this knowledge that all

good things must come to an end andthat the next show won’t be as good as the last one,or that the attendance is going to plummet becauseof the frequency of their shows, or that the generalpublic’s interest in Queen will wane to the point thatThe Great Pretender just won’t represent a relevantspectacle in the music halls and gig venues up anddown the country. And despite this, every time -that’s 6 shows a year taking in a total of 188 peoplefor the last five years - the show sells out and theatmosphere for the Queen fans in attendance iselectric.

Of course, that opening paragraph could readas the mother of all jinxes, and yet it has beenwritten at a time when we’re looking at another

double-headed show being sold out well over a weekin advance. And so who better to see the New Yearin with - the end of the first decade of the century,no less - than with the sound and light spectacularthat is The Great Pretender’s show: with two hours of

The crowd, they all hailed you and chanted yourname, But they never knew, like we knew, meand you were the same, You fed me, you bred

me, I'll remember your name.” These are the lyricsto the number one smash hit Geno by Dexy’sMidnight Runners, the song whichwas to bring a superstar back to theworld of music. Stationed in the UKwith the United States Air Force, itwas the early 60’s when he firststood upon a stage. Those firstencounters as a stand-in vocalist were the first ofmany, and when guitarist Pete Gage spotted him atone of those shows he knew that this was a man withwhom he wanted to perform. Gage approached Genoand ‘Geno Washington and ‘The Ram Jam Band’ wasformed. Two of the biggest selling albums of the1960’s followed and Geno bought soul music to theUK masses, dubbed by many as the ‘Godfather ofBritish Soul’. He loved the music and sang from hishear t: “Mostly my stuff came from the Stax cata-logue. I’d always tell fans who’d done the original, sothey checked out Otis Reading and Sam and Dave

and all that. But we always said ‘we’re goin’ to do itour way.” Every show is bristling with the energy thatmade him a legend, and he knows how impor tantthat is to his audience: “[you got to] reach out and

excite the crowd even if it meant act-ing crazy and stupid - you wanna gig,you gotta groove. They paid for thetickets and you have to enter tainthem” And enter tain them he does. His long hiatus was brought to and

end with the release of Dexy’s song, and soon afterits release he was back in his rightful place, on stageenter taining those who love soul and want a boogie.“ Soul music?! If you want your par ty to be jumping, you can’t beat it.’ He’s right as well, this really is agreat gig - if you know Geno and his music, it’severything you could hope for; if you’re a newcomerlooking for a night of smooth bass and guitar, wailingsax and trumpet, played over a rockin back-beatfrom the drums and all wrapped up in theuproarious style of a soul master, well - yougot it.
