Mirkwood: 35 years in the (re-)makingBy Jack Castle & Chris Ashman

HistoryIn 1967 Mick Morris invited JackCastle to join his band TakeFive, essentially a covers band

featuring excellent vocal harmonies. They were very successful, but soonbegan to look for something morecreative and challenging so the pairdecided to create something new, influenced by bands like, 'Yes',Deep Purple,' and 'Queen'. Theresult was ‘Mirkwood’Both Mick and Jack were widelyrecognised as two of the bestguitarists in the area and the initialline-up consisted of Derek Bowley(lead vocals), Jack Castle and MickMorris (both guitar and vocals),Steve Smith (drums) and AndyBroadbent (bass). In early 1972 D.Evans was brought in to replaceAndy Broadbent (who had movedaway from the Dover area). Up until their last gig in June 1975the band played throughout theSouth East of England includingsupport work to some well-knownbands, including Supertramp.Mirkwood got together just oncemore, in 1978 for a reunionperformance at the MarloweTheatre, Canterbury. The Album

The only 'proper'recording thatMirkwood madewas an album onthe Flams LtdLabel (catalogueNo PR1067), a

local record label owned by JohnScott Cree. Recording commencedon 17 January 1973 at Jack's housein Whitfield, Dover on a Revox reel-to-reel tape recorder! A mere 99copies of the album were pressed, the majority ending up with family, friends and local supporters. Thematerial utilised on the album wasculled from the band's first batch ofsongs: sadly their later material, including many of their finestsongs, was not recorded. All thatremains of the many compositionswritten and performed between1973 and 1975 are some lyric andmusic sheets and a few very poorquality live cassette tapes. In 1993 the album was re-pressedby 10th Planet in a limited editionof 500 numbered copies utilisingthe same artwork and by 2003, theoriginal Flams vinyl copies werechanging hands at between £600and £700 per copy and the 10thPlanet limited copies now depleted. Today, the original vinyl has beencredited as being number 56 in the‘200 rarest albums of all time’,acording to ‘Record Collector’Magazine (Nov 2008)!The New AlbumAt the end of 2003 specialistGerman label Amber Soundroomapproached the Kent band historianand media consultant ChrisAshman, to try and find themembers of Mirkwood, in order tosecure a licence to re-release thealbum. The politics of "to releaseor not to release" went on for sometime. There are those who believea rare album should stay rare for itsvalue. There are others who believethat reproductions allow all to sharein the beauty of a masterpiece. Behind the scenes, Chris huntedhigh and low for a mint un-playedcopy of the Mirkwood Album. (TheMaster Tape had been lost alongwith the original artwork in 1973,when the pressing company went

into liquidation). To the rescuecame Jackie Bowles of The LouisArmstrong Public House in Dover(the favourite haunt of themembers of Mirkwood and themusicians of Dover for nigh on 40years). Her spare copy had satuntouched in her record cabinetsince 1973. The realisation that theoriginal recording quality could nowbe recaptured digitally in Hamburgusing the latest technology was toomuch to miss, so common senseand peace once more reigned andcontracts were signed. For the first time in over 30 yearsthe writers' copyrights wereproperly registered. Thecompositions can now be licensedand recorded by other recordingartistes. At last there wereaffordable Mirkwood albumsavailable for all. Even thosecollectors sitting on one of the mostrare records in the world could buya playable copy.Kent record company Red AdmiralRecords LLP are contracted torelease the recording on CompactDisc to ensure the album's futureavailability and you can alsodownload in all of the popularformats.

Heroes for the day

p8 | The Gig Guide | Nov - Jan

On September 21st, Kent countyshowground at Detling played host to“A Day for Heroes” to raise needed

funds for the Help for Heroes Charity.Headlining for the day were McFly, and TheGig Guide caught up with drummer HarryJudd before the event...

What influenced you to get into in to the musicindustry?

“I’ve always been a fan of music and was in bands atschool. I didn’t really try and get into it, I just kind of fellinto it which is quite fortunate really.”Any Music Qualifications? Or Self Taught?

“Yeah, I started teaching myself for like half a year, thentook lessons at school”What bands have you played with in the past? Anyfavourites?

“We recently did a gig with The Hoosiers, at a showcalled Carlisle Live. They are really good guys and a coolband. Scouting for Girls, who we played with at theOlympic handover were really nice guys too. They are justgood people.”What music are you listening to at the moment?

“Well we’ve been recording the album all year, thenplayed load of shows and done a lot of promotion so to behonest, I’m a bit sick of music really. I actually like to listento talk shows and audio books on the radio”Who would you most like to work with?

“I’ve just heard that Kings of Leon song on the radio (Sexon Fire) and I’m really loving that. They’re a cool band whowe’d love to work alongside. It’s probably better to saywho would want to work with us really, there are loads we’dwant to work with”

Career highlight?“We recently recorded a song with Roger Daltrey, which

was amazing. It was quite nerve-wracking to put downthe bass and drum sections, knowing that he’s used toKeith Moon!”Favourite thing/least favourite thing about your job?

“Touring and recording is a definite favourite, and myleast favourite; promotion.”- Hey, we’re not that bad!“Yeah, least favourite would be talking to promo people

on the phone! haha, seriously there isn’t really a bad sidebut I would say it’s not like other areas of work wherepeople can take time off when they like. I’ve missed quitea few parties as this really is a full time job, but this goeshand in hand with the great benefits so I’m notcomplaining!”Do you think your newest songs have opened up awider fan base?

“We feel in ourselves that they might, but we’re reallyfortunate to have a great set of fans already, so we arenot worried really if they do or not.”

BY STUART KEELER

Tom & Dougie aren’t into football at all. Danny did greatthough, we were all really impressed with his skills. That’sthe best I’ve seen him play so far!”Did you enjoy the experience of making the video for“Lies”?

“Oh deffinately, it’s probably the best video we’ve madeeven though it took the longest to shoot. It lasted abouttwo and a half days but it was an amazing experience ‘cosit felt like we were on a movie set, it felt really big.”Why did you decide to change your band logo, using anew font? Did you have input into the design?

“We did actually. Part of starting up our own record labelwas that we wanted more creative control of our work andso we changed the logo to what we wanted. We hadloads of meetings with the artwork guys, and although weweren’t sure on the new logo at first, now we love it and itgoes well with the album artwork.”Other than Brazil, are you going to be gigging in othercountries?

“Well we’d love to. The Brazil thing happened as we hada huge demand from fans there and a promoter decided toget in contact and put on the shows for us. As long asthere is demand for the music, we’ll happily playanywhere. We’d like to go over Europe, so come onMcFly army; keep pushing for us to play!”You’ve been quoted as saying that you have “theperfect amount of fame”. Do you think you’ll evercrave worldwide recognition?

“I’d definitely not mind upping the level of success, butnot the level of fame. There’s no appeal for me in beingtoo famous.”What’s the biggest animal you could take on inunarmed combat? (You are allowed to team up as aband)

“Without a weapon? Jeez that’s hard. I’m gonna say abear, but I reckon the bear would still have it as Dougie, now I love Dougie, but he’d not be much use in the fightso it’d just really be the three of us getting mauled by abear, whilst Dougie hides out in the bushes. He’d have torun away and carry on McFly by himself!”

You can catch McFly around the country on their2008 arena tour during November.

The deluxe version ofRadio:Active (featuring 2 hourbonus DVD, 32 page bookletand 4 new songs) is outnow.

Thanks to Emily Hall (Kent’s No.1 McFly fan!) forproviding extra interview questions.

Earlier this year, you took a brave move of not onlyleaving your record label, but also giving away youralbum for free with The Mail on Sunday. Were youworried that the move could backfire on you?

“At the beginning of the year we were looking at itpositively and weren’t worried. We were confident it was agood thing to do and it did generate a lot of interest. If Iwas promoting the album all over again I would keepsaying it’s not what people are going to expect. I’m 22, andI think it’s full of quality songs. People think of McFly as ‘5colours in Her Hair’ & ‘Obviously’ which, don’t get wewrong, are all great pop songs and we still enjoy playingthem, but the new album has moved on a bit.”What inspired you to get involved with Days forHeroes?

“It’s an amazing opportunity, and an amazing thing to do.We always like to do shows that have a strong meaning tothem, and it feels like we’re helping out, even if we aren’tdoing much!”Danny appeared (and did very well) on Soccer Aid, didanyone else in the band want to take part?

“I did yeah, but I think they only wanted one of us and

BY STUART KEELERForming in 2001,Liverpool band TheZutons have grown to

establish themselves as aworldwide success. Withthree studio albums under

their belt and their debutbeing nominated for the2004 Mercury Music Prize, they have a lot to be proudof. The band were originally afour-piece, with drummer

Sean Payne’s girlfriend; AbiHarding making anoccasional guestappearance with hersaxophone. The crowd aswell as the band, enjoyedthe extra depth that thesaxophone was bringing tothe music and so Abi wasbrought in as a permanentmember of the band. They have been activelytouring this year with manyfestival appearances, including a visit toMaidstone for One BigWeekend hosted by Radio 1in May.They excel live, and will bekicking off their 2 month UKwinter tour at The Leas CliffHall, Folkestone on the 10thNovember. Ahead of theirgig, we asked them a fewquestions...

Page 12: The Gig Guide Issue 6

The Zutons

p12 | The Gig Guide | Nov - Jan

As a band, you have a sound that is quiteunique, making it difficult for some people tocategorise you. Where do your influencescome from and what is it that has shapedyour tone into what it is today?

We all like to listen to all sorts of music, nothingis out of bounds! I think the different characters inour band have shaped our sound, we play togetherand the outcome is Zuton music.Your music also manages to appeal to adiverse cross section of listeners, somethingthat many bands find hard to achieve. Whatwould you cite as the key to your success inentertaining so many people?

Good songwriting at the core of the band, aband that believes in music being played well live, and not being too pretentious.Liverpool has recently been named ‘The UK’sMost Musical City’ and has been prolific inproducing a lot of musical talent. Do youthink this would still be true if The Beatles didnot become famous and bring the attention of

the world? Is it just something in the waterup there?!

Who knows? It's got a great pedigree in bands, maybe it's just always been a part of life here, there's still music being played every night off theweek up here. This summer you participated in a fewfestivals, not least returning to Glastonbury(which I caught – excellent by the way!).How did it feel to be back, playing this timeon a different stage (but still drawing amassive crowd!)?

It's always good to play at glastonbury, it has aspecial vibe that goes with it. It's been good tothe zutons, we've been as punters years ago andappreciate what it's like to be in the field and seesomething a bit special. This year when we playedit was just as the sun was setting, and it was toomuch, one of the best shoes we’ve done.As well as performing at ‘green’ friendlyGlastonbury, you took part in the Forest Tour, hosted and run by The Forestry Commission

Russell Pritchard chats with us...

Page 13: The Gig Guide Issue 6

to promote British woodland. Is thatsomething that you feel passionately aboutsupporting?

To be honest no, we were asked to do it and itsounded like a great place to do a gig, we're all forsaving the world but I can't say I passionatelysupport it.Mark Ronson’s re-mixed version of ‘Valerie’has gone on to be a great success. When hefirst pitched the idea to you, did you have anyidea it would take off as much as it did?

Not really, it was just nice to be asked, no-onehad ever asked to do it before, and we just wentwith it, and it's great. I think the fact the song hasbeen a hit twice in two years is a great accoladeand shows the song to be really good as it could beplayed a number of ways and still sound good.Is there anyone else you would like to workalongside and collaborate with?

Lots of people, it's just makin it happen that'shard.Since her inclusion into the band, Abi hasattracted a large amount of stage attention, being popular with your fans. Do you plan onrecording any tracks with just her vocals upfront?

There's one on you can do anything were shesings a verse , she's got a great voice, and it's astring to our bow havin a female voice to use.Let’s talk about your 10th November gig atThe Leas Cliff Hall, forming part of your UKtour. The Leas Cliff is quite a small venue for

a band as world famous as The Zutons, so areyou looking forward to the intimacy of theshow?

It's good to see the whites of their eyes! It's thefirst one on the tour so we're gaggin for it at theminute, and what with it being the first one, it'sbound to be a bit special. You are always a hard working band, eithertouring or working on new material. What’snext on the cards for you after the tour?

Working on new material! You've gotta work allthe time really, why stop? What’s the most Rock ‘n’ Roll thing you’vedone?

We’re Jammin’

p16 | The Gig Guide | Nov - Jan

The Jam should need no introduction, debuting in 1977 and racking up eighteentop 40 singles and four number 1 hits

including the universally recognised; ‘GoingUnderground’, they are an important part ofour music heritage.Since their break up in 1982, when frontmanPaul Weller decided to pursue a differentmusical path, Bruce Foxton & Rick Bucklercontinued to make music in various forms untila decison was made in 2007 to reunite andressurrect the old Jam flavour. Paul hadalready expressed his negative feelings abouta reformation many times before, so theyknew that they would need to find someone tofill in for his vocals, and that’s where RusselHastings came in. Being a fan of The Jam,Russel was familiar with their music and knewonly too well the level of responsibility

required to replicate Paul Weller’s vocaltalents. Jam fans will be pleased to discoverthat he manages to pull this off with strikingacuracy. Dave Moore was also brought in toadd a new level of dynamics to the mix withhis multi-instrumental skills, and the overalleffect is an entertaining live show guaranteedto please both Jam fans and general musiclovers alike.Their intensive UK Tour starts on 5thDecember and brings them to our Margateshores to play the Winter Gardens on the19th, but ahead of the tour you can grab acopy of the new double disc DVD release; “AFirst Class Return - From The Jam”, whichfeatures their entire sold-out London Forumgig from December 2007, as well as extensiveinterviews & extra features.

I caught up with Rick Buckler for a chat...The Jam played Kent before, did that playany part in the decision to includeMargate’s Winter Gardens in your Decembertour?

“We will always try and get to the towns thatmay have been overlooked before.”You’ve recently released a 7 track EP, howdoes it feel to be releasing your musicagain?

“For years I’ve always wanted to revisitthese songs, and so to film a show as well is agreat feeling.”During your entire careers as musicians, what has been your best and/or mostmemorable gig to play?

“The Wembley shows because of the venuesprestige and it was an era in my life that seemedto be coming to an end.”The Jam’s music has had a strong effect onthe music scene today with many bandsstill quoting you as influences in theirmusic. How does it feel to have left suchan impact on the music world?

“This is a real and very flattering bonus, totally unexpected.”Now lets turn the spotlight on you!… Whowould you cite as your influences for whenyou first started out?

“Seeing other musicians starting out aroundme and realising that it was also possible for meto get involved.”…and what music are you listening to now?

“I still listen to a lot of my old favorites andrediscovering artist like Annie Lennox, EarthWind and Fire, and still filling gaps in mycollection left by vinyl to CD.”What are your thoughts on reality-basedmusic shows, and what effect (if any) doyou think it is having on the public’sappreciation of music?

“The prime reason for these shows isobviously to make a successful TV programme, everything else is secondary, I’d like to thinkthat the participants gain something memorableand lasting from their experience. It’s not such agood thing when the industry controls too much.I tend not to watch these shows but most ofwhat I see are well known songs withestablished styles, easy to relate to, I suppose.”

What are your plans for the future after thetour is over?

“The Christmas break (some break!) but thenew year should be a good one, we have plentyof plans for touring other territories and movingthe band on.”What would you like to receive forChristmas?

“An undisturbed movie”

This multi purpose venue has farmore soul than the description belies, but itisn’t just that – a place for lunch, fordinner, for a glass of vino or a cocktail, forparties and, most importantly, to see themost talented performers on tour or fromwithin Kent itself. The venue is an intimate one, low lit, witha red velvet stage as a focal point and hasso far played host to Kevin Rowland, AndySmith, Pete Molinari and the Ralfe Band. This is a see all, hear all venue, where youcan almost touch the stars! Entry fees arekept as low as possible at £3 on specificnights – they do go higher, but they alsogo lower, so a night out can cost as little as

£10 with a great performance to boot. TheFarmhouse’s small capacity and reasonableprices does mean that they sell out prettyquick so book in advance or arrive early(for a bite to eat maybe) to avoiddisappointment. The restaurant is headed up by RobCooper, formerly of The Goods Shed andSamphire, and showcases the best localproduce available. A traditional east-endpie, mash and liquor is served all dayeveryday along side a menu that flows withthe seasons and is governed by what thefisherman, the farmer and thegameskeeper bring in each day. This is arestaurant without a walk-in fridge becauseit doesn’t need one – food is sourced, cooked and served fresh each day. Maincourses range from £5 to £10 for twocourses.

The Gig Guide Awards

Nov - Jan | The Gig Guide | p37

In its first year of existence, we at theGig Guide have been over-whelmedwith the depth of talent we have in the

East Kent music scene and we believe thatthis has influenced promoters to bring“mega” bands to East Kent. Never beforehas there been so many fantastic gigs toattend - this year alone we have seen (inaddition to 1 Big Weekend), The Feeling,Scouting for Girls, McFly, Hoosiers, UB40,Aswad, Mark Ronson in East Kent and weare going to see The Zutons, TheStranglers, The Enemy and the Fratellis inthe next couple of months.

In order to recognise and acknowledge thetalent that we have in this area, we havedecided to launch what we hope will be anAnnual Event – the GIG GUIDE AWARDS –and in common with other music awards(the Brits, the Mobos etc) , we shall callthese “The Gig’s”.

In a glittering ceremony at a yet to beannounced venue in East Kent early in2009, the very best talent will gather tolearn who is to be presented with aninaugural “GIG”! The best thing aboutthese awards is that YOU decide who wins– simply complete the form here in themagazine and send it back to us FREE!Categories include Best band, solo artist, newcomer, single and album of the yearso start thinking about who you would liketo nominate.

The ceremony will feature performancesfrom some of the nominated Bands andwill be a not to be missed event. Ticketswill be publicised in Issue 1 of 2009 andwill sell rapidly so watch out for news onthis event soon.

Up Close & Personal: Kristie Scotland

p40 | The Gig Guide | Nov - Jan

BY ABBY [email protected]

Just lately I have beenlearning to drive (Yayfor me) and my driving

instructor mentioned abouthis young daughter andwhat an amazing voice she

had. Obviously every father dotes ontheir daughter but when I heard her singI couldn’t believe my ears, she was trulyamazing. Surely a 16 year couldn’t singlike that, but sure enough when I went tomeet Kristie, she looked the part and hada story to tell with a voice to go with it.

When did you and people aroundyou realise your talents?

“Ever since I can remember, I used tosing Celine Dione in my room and Icould always hit the high notes. Likeany young girl I loved singing but therewas always something more to it forme, it was like my outlet andsomething I could focus on. My mumwas upstairs one day and I startedsinging Bob Dylan, Forever Young andshe came running downstairs thinkingthat it was on the television, from thatday my parents have nurtured mysinging and have helped in every waythey possible can.”

What would you say your biggestachievement has been?

“It was when I sang at a charity eventfor a young girl that had Leukaemia. Itwas an emotional but proud moment. Ihave also won awards and haveparticipated in loads of events, whichhas gained me experience and has alsohelped me decide what direction I wantto go in.”

Who is your inspiration and whatgenre would you like to sing? “I don’t have any one person thatinspires me. When I went to V(festival) that was inspirational, seeing all those bands singing in frontof thousands of fans gave me goosebumps, I loved it! That’s where Iwant to be, on a stage in front ofpeople that love my music. I haven’tfound my calling yet and I am notsure what genre of music that I wantto sing but I have started learning theguitar and I am also getting help withlearning to write my own songs whichis exciting.”

“Ever since I“Ever since I cancanremember, Iremember, I used to singused to singCeline Dione...”Celine Dione...”

Page 41: The Gig Guide Issue 6

Nov - Jan | The Gig Guide | p41

Do you think there is a lot of helplocally for young singers likeyourself?

“There is help out there but you have tofind it as it rarely comes looking for you.You need to decide what is right for youand think about where you want to gowithin the music industry before you askfor help from professionals. I went toproducers a little too early, I wasn’tcomfortable with the songs that I wassinging and that’s why I chose to stepback a little and start again.”

What would you say to youngsingers out there?

“Don’t let anyone pigeon hole you into agenre you don’t like singing. I found outthe hard way, not that I’m not gratefulfor everything that was done for me. Ijust didn’t feel comfortable singing thesongs that they wanted me to and it wasportrayed in my voice. If I could do it

all again I would start where I am now, going round local pubs and singing withpeople that appreciate my vocals whatever song I sing. You have to followyour dreams and ambitions and grabevery opportunity that comes your wayeven if it is only to gain experience fromit but also with that in mind you mustlisten to yourself and not everyonearound you.”

What will you do next?“I have chosen to start again and pursueIndie music. I can’t get enough of thefeeling when you get on stage and singsomething that makes me individual andnot a teen commercial artist. I will learnto play the guitar and carry on with thepiano. This will broaden my horizon andopen a few more doors than I haveopened already. I have done a lot beingso young but I have realised that isn’tthe direction that I want to go in.Commercial music isn’t the way forwardfor me.”

...and she is absolutely right; her voice ismade for something that doesn’t fit intothe pop genre. It has depth and soul andneeds a genre to match. There are manyyoung singers out there that desire somuch to make it big within the musicindustry but by wanting something sobadly, they make mistakes. It goes foranything within the entertainment world;you mustn’t let people take advantage tomake money from you how ever goodtheir intentions are.

Look out for Kristie performing live soon.

““I can’t get enough ofI can’t get enough ofthe feeling when you getthe feeling when you geton stage and singon stage and sing””

The Gig Guide takes a look at some CD’s from Kent bands...

If you would like us to review your music, please send a copy to:

Gig Guide Verdict:

ShyChlo and the boys have a sound unique to the unsigned music scenein Kent. Featuring ‘Shy Chloe’ up front rapping over 'her boys', her wellpenned lyrics are not only a pleasure to the ears, but a cleverly deliveredstatement to those who are willing to listen.'What You Sayin'?' & 'My Life' feature twin vocals with support fromsecondary vocalist Woely P, giving yet more depth to the ShyChlo music.Look out for 'The Blueprint', a guaranteed crowd pleaser and all-roundfeel good song, with it's crescendo effect dropping you straight into it'ssingalong chorus. To quote Chloe herself, she sings; "my aim's to makemusic for all the classes; the working, the middle, and the ones up theirarse's". The band have enough potential so why are they still unsigned?I have a feeling no label yet has the balls to take onboard the fierytongue of ShyChlo and her boys.

The first thing that hits you as you hear the choral intro and firstfew lines of Past The Green's opener; 'Home' is how strikinglyfamiliar ReoRae's voice is to world renowned artist Dido. With music to match, ReoRae's voice is one that is very relaxing andit would be easy to sit and let the mind wander with the warmth ofher music flowing over you.'Where Are You Now?' is another hit, with it's lively upbeat rhythmand laid back, but nonetheless effective vocals from ReoRae,displaying just how good her vocal range can be.This debut EP is filled with beautiful songs and comes highlyrecommended.

Band: ReoRaeTitle: Past The GreenFormat: EP (4 Tracks)

This EP should be owned just for the excellently designed artwork thatfeatures all throughout the case, but that's not what we're focusing on todayand the music doesn't fail to impress either. All 4 tracks are masterpieces and are a window into the bright future of DryRiser. Influences of post rock masters; Radiohead can be heard within theirmusic, but none moreso than in the excellent vocals from Nik Ledgard. Theopening track; 'Myself' could even have been written by Thom Yorke. The title track changes up the mood, shifting towards more of an acoustic-electro number, adding electrified vocals and sharp, punchy rhythm.'Rushing' brings in slower, clean-guitar melodies and lets Nik Ledgard’sperfect vocals shine above the mix.We hope to hear more from Dry Riser soon.

Gig Guide Verdict:

Like a thundering train, Jekazol's music is full of heavy riffs anddouble drummed beats. None moreso than 'The Light That Shines'which relents after 1 minute 17 seconds for a brief interlude beforethe pace returns. The guitarwork is excellent and the drummingvery powerful... quite an achievement when you factor in that thereare (currently) only two members in the band.'T0M0Z0Z' is our favourite with it's catchy guitar hooks andthumping 4/4 beat chorus. Featuring a well placed solo, backed bya rhythm that sounds somewhat funky, it's a mix that works welland gives a slight psychobilly feel to the track. On the tail end of the EP is a well rendered version of Iron Maiden's'Wrathchild' which finishes the demo off to a high degree.

Band: JekazolTitle: J_K_Z_L ?Format: Demo (3 Tracks)

The two track promo even though a little short, shows a promisingglimpse of what the deal-based hardcore band have to offer.Powerful, driving riffs are mixed with melodic guitar pieces provingPrecept are not just another producer of heavy noise.Rob Manhire’s screaming vocals fit well and help empower the songswith a sense of raw energy. 'The Deeper We Sink' sounds fresh withan excellent pre-chorus, and it’s Bridge & Solo prove to beexemplary of Precept's skills as musicians.'Slowly The Abyss' brings in a more emotional feel with it's heart-feltchorus and well-written bridge. Keep your eyes open for Precept'salbum due out soon, featuring both these tracks.

Band: PreceptTitle: May 2008 PromoFormat: Promo (2 Tracks)

The funk hits you as soon as the EP starts with the powerful'Earthbound', whose chorus is as catchy as the wet sounding wah onthe guitars. Every track is a hit on this EP, from the laid backsummer feel of 'Diabat' to the shanty sound of 'The Berber MountainSong'. They are beautifully written, perfectly presented and wellproduced. It is the title track 'Kingdoms Of Experience' that exposesthe full talents of the band though, with heavy bass and funk guitarmelding perfectly whilst Liam Magill's vocals fit seamlessly over thebeautiful array. Syd Arthur's music is a joy to listen to and youcannot fail to let the funk get deep inside you.

Kieran at the classic bikers showKieran at the classic bikers show, W, Walmer green almer green

Twelve year old Kieran (no relation toDean), is quite something to catch live.Since picking up the sticks and getting

his kit a year ago, young Kieran has come along way and regularly drums alongsidemum & dad, who are more publically knownas Mixed Emotions.

In this short space of time, Kieran hasjammed with the likes of CounterfeitNotes, EK1, Ian Shawcross, AntiquesRoadshow and Archive, and is beingtaught by Dave White.

Keen to expand his skills, Kieran islearning to read music and is often seentalking to other drummers, burning theirears with as many questions as possible!

He clearly enjoys playing, as has beenheard saying; “when I close my eyes anddrum, I think I’m in another world”.

Recently moved to Kent and missing jamming and collaborating with

other musicians! I've done a lot of different things in the past and very

flexible stylewise, but if you'd like to know more about the music i'm

doing now just get in touch.

I'd like to establish regular jam sessions/get-togethers with like-minded

musicians of different styles/instruments - the idea is to make music

together, learn from each other and have a cracking good time. If that

sounds like you please contact me.
