We will all be working very hard over the next 6 weeks with rehearsals to ensure our 2019 performance is one to remember. Due to the logistics of the event and number of siblings in the school, we are unable to ensure all students in the same family are in the same cast. Teachers will be sending home information about costumes or props in the next few weeks. Please ensure your children are sent to school with any requirements early in order to streamline costumes.

CONCERT 2019: 6 – 9 August 2019 – Education Week.

It’s concert season! We are all very excited to again showcase the talent, drama skills, dance, musicianship and performances of our students K-6. We will all be working very hard overthe next 6 weeks with rehearsals to ensure our 2019 performance is one to remember.

There will be two casts who each do 3 performances (one matinee and two evening). Wehave divided the school into these two casts to provide more opportunity for children todemonstrate their skills and talents, and also so there is enough space on stage in order forparents and families to see their child. Due to the logistics of the event and number ofsiblings in the school, we are unable to ensure all students in the same family are in thesame cast.

Teachers will be sending home information about costumes or props in the next few weeks. Please ensure your children are sent to school with any requirements early in order tostreamline costumes.

Tickets will go on sale in Week 10. There will be a cost for these as we need to pay for thestaging, lighting and sound, and some props and equipment. It will be an event that yourchildren will always remember, and we do hope that their enthusiasm will be matched byyours. Further information is provided in this newsletter by Katy Costa, the concertcoordinator.

DEMOUNTABLE REMOVAL

Unfortunately the demountable beside 5W is scheduled to be removed on Thursday thisweek. We have tried to hold onto the extra space as our learning support team use it everyday, but it needs urgent repairs and refurbishing in order to have it useable again. We donot have a class for this demountable so the DoE will remove it as part of their workschedule. This means we will have cranes here early on Thursday morning on the Melwoodend of the school. 5W and 5PB will be relocated into other rooms and there will be safetymeasures in place for all students and families entering the Melwood end of the school. Weare very mindful of everyone’s safety in and around the school so please do not use thisarea unless you need to.

The Learning Support program will continue, but will need to use other spaces in the schoolat this point in time. As the clothing shop utilises the large space where the shop is housedfor just 1 hour every week we are currently negotiating the uniform shop requirements inorder to come up with a solution for learning support and uniforms. We will keep ourcommunity posted with any changes that may occur.

PAUL KELLY CUP

Our Forestville AFL teams competed in the annual Paul Kelly Cup competition second roundlast week. Both teams played with great sportsmanship and competed with undyingpassion. The girls’ team made it into the finals on the day but did not progress through tothe Grand Final. I would like to thank Mrs Mackenzie, Mr Williamson and Mr Ellis for theirenthusiasm leading this program, and to our students for the wonderful zest for, andcommitment to, the sport, their team and their school. We are all so proud of yourepresenting Forestville with such an exemplary attitude.

DEBATING

Our two debating teams competed in their 2nd debate against Killarney Heights PS atForestville PS last week, debating the topics ‘That all schoolwork should be done oncomputers’, and ‘Primary schools should never use electronic devices for teaching’. Thestudents were very successful and were awarded the debate for one round and in the otherthe debate was awarded to the other school’s team. The skills students learn while debatingwill follow them into their high school and later years. Thank you to Ms Cavell and MrGuzman for coaching these teams and for working incredibly hard to ensure the studentsare supported and learn debating skills and protocols.

GROWTH MINDSET

Could disappointment in children really be healthy for them?

As parents, you hate to see your children disappointed. They are sad, disenchanted, andseem to have the weight of the world on their shoulders. Your heart aches for their pain andyou want to do everything you can to relieve them of that disappointment. But that wouldbe a mistake!

What Is Disappointment?

Disappointment is perhaps the most immediate emotion children experience after aperceived failure or when something goes wrong. Disappointment involves the feelings ofthwarted desire, loss, and discouragement when children fail to fulfil their hopes andexpectations-or those of others. Children are going to feel disappointment when they don'tachieve their goals or believe they have let you or themselves down.

The right attitude toward Disappointment

Disappointment is a normal, though difficult, part of growing up. Your children willinevitably experience disappointment in school, sports, the arts, and in their social lives. How your children learn to respond to disappointment will determine its impact on theirfuture achievement and happiness.

You can teach your children to see stumbling blocks as opportunities to improve and grow.Offering your children a different perspective on their disappointment-"I know it feels badright now, but what can you learn from it?"-gives them tools they can use to avoid orminimise their disappointment in the future, and to turn the obstacles to their advantage byincreasing resilience, motivation, and confidence.
