DECEMBER 2011 THE FLYC TELLTALE

Commodore‘s Column Todd Craig

Hello, Fellow Members.

One thing you can say about FLYC;

we're a club that can get things

done! It seems like we just started

the process of moving off the docks

and the clubhouse is already reas-

sembled on a cement pad in our

new home overlooking the Marina.

There is still some work to do, but the major effort is com-

plete. My sincerest thanks go out to all the wonderful

members that showed up to help on the work days and

particularly to Dave Strain who has managed this whole

process. The view from our new location is terrific. Stop

by and check it out next time you are at the lake.

The holiday season is upon us. Official FLYC events resume

on February 11th with the first Spring Series race. We have

some time to prepare ourselves and our boats for the 2012

season. The membership voted to increase the number of

series races, so we will now have 5 race days for both the

Spring and Fall series. Fall will see an additional Sunday race

day. The 2012 Calendar is now available on the flyc.org

website. I expect to see a supplemental calendar up by next

year with all the RC assignments.

The FLYC Awards Banquet was a great success, to the best

of my recollection. The food and location was Top Flight

(pun intended), and I'd like to thank everyone who made it

possible. I apologize to all in attendance for not being at my

best that night as I was suffering from a rather nasty cold.

Despite that, I enjoyed the event and the company im-

mensely and hope you all did as well. I am honored to be

selected for another term as Commodore and I couldn't ask

for a more supportive membership.

Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Todd Craig

With the first series race of 2012 not until Feb, the racing

news consists of encouragement to read the rules, tidy up

your boat, get the sails mended, or ordered. However, the

real race of 2011, this last race, is one against the clock.

The race was one of work power vs. the rainy season. It

seems at this point that the workers have scored. . The

FLYC clubhouse on ―H‖ dock is no longer on the dock, but

newly reassembled on the hard. Go back to the Oct issue

to see one of the reasons for the move (ROT) A team of

FLYC members cleared out the interior first, took down the

overhang, and disassembled the roof, and took down the

walls. Sort of a barn raisin‘ in reverse. The folks at the Ma-

rina gave the use of a floating dock to pile the stuff on.

They floated it to the ramp and the ―FLYC crew made good

use of a trailer that hauled the stuff up to the site. On the

Tuesday before Thanksgiving the pad was formed and the

cement truck came. There were some tired puppies by the

end of that day! Then, Thanksgiving gave a break. By Dec

3-4 the wall went up, the roof was finished, and the job was

pretty near complete. This looked like the barn raisin‘ for

real. It has taken many, many man hours to do this, but the

race against the clock and the rainy season is over, FLYC=

1, weather= 0. 1000 thank yous need to go to Todd and

Barb Craig, and Dave Strain for getting this under way. Bob

Backer was there along with Lanette Strain, Mark Erdrich,

Scott Fredrickson, Steve Galeria, Jim Goldberg and Lana

Chang, Scott Hefty, Randy Hollingsworth, Drake Johnson,

Kerry and Joyce Johnson, George Koch, Phil Hodgson, Mike

and April Meyer, Mike Rayfuse, John Speight, Jarian Westfall,

Mark Werder, and probably more. These workers re-

sponded with their time, their tools, their bodies, and the

critical element, their positive attitudes. If I‘ve left anyone

out, please forgive. The next ―race‖ of the club is the one

that will occur on the inside of the clubhouse. So far, it is

an empty room with potential. If you have any ideas of

how best to use this space, drop Todd or me a line. Your

input is always welcome. There are things yet undone on

the outside, including paint, so this is the time for ideas.

After all, it is YOUR club.

Dave Strain

November report………..

12/3/11 5:30 pm I just got back from the lake, and our club-

house has 'swallowed the anchor' and is now resting on its

new foundation overlooking the marina. Others will cover it

in more detail, but our construction boss, Dave Strain, man-

aged to bring this part of the project in well under the pro-

jected cost--<$1000.

The site was literally swarming with workers, and the re-

assembly project moved along at near breakneck speed.

We had so much manpower we realized that by the time

we figured out an 'easy' way to do things, we could simply

have plowed through the task with muscle power. Between

hoisting joists and roof panels, while several of us were

leveling some of the sand used for fill that we were tired of

stumbling over, Dave muttered something about 'human

backhoes'. That was the kind of energy present.

It's going to be a great place to watch what goes on at the

launch ramp and Mark Werder noted that with radio com-

munications it will be a great place to observe and run small

boat marina racing.

The building is almost as weather-tight as it has ever been,

ready for the coolers, life jackets, boat parts, etc. to be

moved back in, right after it gets a fresh coat of paint.

Boring, boring, boring this month. Bank statements and

advertisements. The only communication worthy of com-

ment was the Poimiroo's reply to the banquet invitation that

Stephanie Erdrich received, and I got second-hand with the

banquet checks.

Good on you,

mates!! : )

Membership Lanette Strain

FLYC membership renewals are due by Feb.1st. There is a

lot of fun yet to be had for your membership support. This

year, we will have a place of our own, like a proper club-

house. Some of your membership dollars went directly

into the relocation of the clubhouse.

Be sure to renew. It‘s the great thing to do. Please fill out

the membership form that is on line at the website, or that

is in this edition of the TellTale. (Page 6)

FLYC Banquet a BIG HIT Lanette Strain

Thanks to Stephanie Erdrich, the banquet was a success.

The restaurant, The Aviator, was an easy to get to venue,

and the buffet style service was delicious. She and Madeline

Rayfuse decorated the place to the nines, and Mike Rayfuse

had photos projected onto a screen for a sailing backdrop.

As it turns out, the Sacramento Wheel Men occasionally

stop there for a quick biking refresher. Several members of

FLYC are also bikers (in the good sense of the word).

Awards went to Mark Werder for the Dan Buckley Award

for journalism, Lanette Strain received the Golden Cleat for

her work in many areas of the Club over the past year, and

the Sportsman Award to Mike Meyer for his extraordinary

recruitment to encourage sailing in general, and Wed.

Night Beer can racing specifically. Congratulations, sailors.

Mark Erdrich received the First place finish for the Spring

Series, while Mark Werder garnered a second. In the Fall

Series, Todd and Barbara Craig earned a First place, with

Mark Werder again taking a Second. Jim Goldberg and Lana

Chang got a Third place win. Rob Cram sailed to a first

place in the centerboard racing during the Fall Series.

Commodore Craig announced the new board members for

the upcoming year. He will continue as commodore, Dave

Strain will stay on as vice commodore, Scott Frederickson

continues as Treasurer, and Mark Werder will keep publish-

ing the TellTale. New board members are Jim Goldberg,

who will be rear commodore, keeping those pesky marks in

line. Lana Chang will be the new secretary and membership

person, and Joyce Johnson, the hospitality chairwoman.

CONGRATULATIONS, MEMBERS OF FLYC. IT WAS A

GREAT YEAR.

While the 2011 ‗Turkey Shoot‘ Regatta on Lake Washing-

ton, held on November 19th, did not start well it finished in

fine fashion. There was a nice but light breeze when every-

one put in, and then the wind died. To add insult to injury,

after bobbing around for a half hour the wind filled in nicely,

but everyone was asked to leave; actually we were asked to

leave the turning basin to make room for a freighter that

was coming. The freighter took an hour and a half to show

up, turn around, and then go back down the channel to a

fertilizer plant; all under the watchful eye of a Coast Guard

escort with machine gun at the ready. After the delay we

were good to go and we got in four quick races in excellent

conditions. As usual the Lake Washington Sailing Club was

a very gracious host and served a delicious hot meal right

after the racing ended. Overall, the race organization was

good, the competition was tight (see photo), no one

dumped their boat, and everyone had a good time.

Huge Thank You to Mark and Stephanie Erdrich for hosting

the Fleet 12 party at your wonderful home. It was a fun eve-

ning attended by Todd and Barb Craig, Jim Goldberg and

Lana Chang, Mike Meyers, Mel and Kathy Morrison and

Stacy and myself. The potluck snacks were delicious and

there were a couple requests for the recipe to the bread

that Lana baked. Yumm!

After food, beverages and lot‘s of Santana 20 war stories (or

are they fish stories?) we covered our annual meeting

agenda. Todd and Barbara Craig won the Fleet Champion

award for their first place performance at Camellia Cup.

The Enforcer trophy went un-awarded as our fleet did not

race in any away races with a fleet start. Mark Erdrich gave

Stacy and I his ―extra‖ trophy from Whiskeytown and

shared with everyone the story from that trip. There will be

an effort this year to fill in the gaps on the perpetual tro-

phies as we have lost some of the winners names. The fleet

opted to keep me on for another year as Fleet Captain al-

though I didn‘t see many volunteers. We looked ahead at

the 2012 calendar and agreed to sign up as a fleet for Fol-

som events in advance to get scored as a Fleet and possibly

our own starts. It is undecided how many will travel to the

Nationals or High Sierra as they are back to back weeks. I

filled in everyone on my plan to consolidate fleet funds into

a local bank account and finally, we raffled off some very

tasty adult beverages. Thanks to everyone that made it out!

2012 is looking good with at least 5 boats planning on racing

in the FLYC Spring Series if not more. The competition

should be tight, can‘t wait! Have a safe and wonderful Holi-

day Fleet 12.
