Concepts Reconsidered
● High stakes testing has increased the frequency of procedure memorization
● Time in class is so short, concepts are lost to meaningless steps, mnemonic devices, and procedures without connections.
● Are you guilty of referring to the order of operations as “Pemdas” or a dysfunctional relationship with your (real or fictional) Aunt Sally?
Exhibit A
Please take a moment and simplify the following expression:
5 + 5 + 5 - 5 + 5 + 5 - 5 + 5 x 0

Finally...
The argument?
Why should I flip my classroom?
● Class time is precious ... and limited
● Expectations are high
● What is achievement?
What do you need?
● Get to know your students
● A home for your videos online○ YouTube, Google Drive, Screencast-o-matic, etc
● Implementation○ Where I’ve been○ Where I’m going

Assessment and Grading
● Mastery Quizzes○ Form A and Form B
● Summative Tests or Optional Projects
● One midterm covering the first two units right before holiday break.
Online Organization
Teacher web site: johnston.k12.nc.us/rebeccakimble
● Work within internet constraints○ youtube vs. google drive (or both)○ burn DVDs for students without internet○ check out flash drives○ check out old laptops with videos loaded on them
Opportunity vs Need for Change
● Aligning with the Common Core Standards
● Time needed
● Need for Differentiation
● Transparency
● Who’s the expert?
Flexibility
● Class time doesn’t have to be spent on a 60 minute procedure filled lecture
● Students own their learning
