Walking through the newlibrary, being trampled on by students inother grades, the excitement waspalpable as students began to noticeour schools new computer lab, withnewly arranged desks and empty boxesof iMacs for decoration.

This week, Magen DavidYeshivah brought us a brand new lab, equipped with modern day, non-prehistoric computers.

The new computer labconsists of 26 iMacs, the latest versionof Apples desktop computer that just hitthe market. This state of the art Mac labwas donated by Mr. Steve Russo.

Of course, it is going to beused by our 9th and 10th gradecomputer classes to better understandthe Mac World. We will learn about theoperating system, and go through manydifferent features on the App store sostudents can find educational appswhich may help them in their studies.

The lab will also be used byvarious teachers in different subjectsthroughout the school year.

The new iMacs will also beequipped with Microsoft Office for Mac,and the iLife Suite which includesGarage Band, iMovie, iPhoto, and more.In addition, the schools computers willhave the Adobe CS Series for studentsto learn Photoshop and a variety ofother different photo editing programs. These programs are going to be usedmainly in the 11th and 12th gradeelective courses to help studentsdevelop portfolios in the area of graphicdesigning and journalism.

This is just a small sample ofwhat this new lab has to offer for ourstudents. Over time, we will be able to

add many more applications and getmore and more use out of this new Maclab!

Q: Why did you decide to countthe steps for Chai LifelinesWalkathon?A: I am fortunate enough to havethe chance to help people inneed, and I wanted to raise mon-ey for charity. It is a good thing todo, and I want to give back inevery way I can.

Q: How are you able to countsteps for a walkathon? How is itpossible?A: Everyone gets a pedometerand it tracks how many steps aretaken. The goal is to take threemillion steps in total, which is thetotal amount of steps it takes to

get from New York to Florida.

Q: Who is benefitting from thiswalkathon?A: The sick children of Chai Life-line are benefitting from thiswalkathon. Their organization willreceive all of the proceeds so thatthey can use the money for theircharity.

Q: You were also very involved inthe Yachad Shabbaton. What didyou do there?A: W e played games, ate, spoke

with the Yachad members, andformed bonds of friendship. Ispecifically made sure all of thevolunteers were interacting withthe Yachad members and that allof the Yachad members wereinteracting with us as well. I alsoensured that no one felt left outand I tried to make everyone feelas comfortable as possible.

Q: Describe your experiencesengaging with the Yachad group.A: I really love interacting withthem. They have a few difficultiesbut once you get to know them, you realize that they are really justlike us. Its great to see the smileson their faces and to know thatyou are the reason why they are

smiling. Engaging with the Ya-chad group taught me how torelate to all kinds of people. Ithelped me realize how fortunate Iam for my family, friends, health, and life. I also gained new friend-ships and I made long-lastingmemories.

Q: Is working with Yachad differ-ent than other types of Hesed? A: Yes. Working with Yachadmembers requires more patience.

It is different from just raisingmoney with your friends as agroup; its a lot of hard work. But,the reward is much more satisfy-ing because you get to see theirhappiness firsthand.

Q: Are there any other Hesedopportunities that you hope to bea part of?A: I would like to run the Disneyhalf marathon one day. The mon-ey goes to SBH, which is a greatcause. There is always room formore Hesed. When you have thechance to give, you should.

    Q. How does it feel to do Hesedand help others?A: It feels good to k now th at you

are helping others and not expect-ing anything else in return. Youare doing something because youwant to.

Q: What is one piece of adviceyou have for someone who wouldwant to get involved?A: You have to want it. You cantbe forced to do it or you wont likeit. Just realize that the whole pointis to thank G-d for what you haveand give back to those who areless fortunate.

    Editorials

The foundation of America is based onimmigrants, settlers coming into thiscountry, looking for new opportunities.Immigrants from all over the world haveadded a wealth of talent to our countryboth economically and culturally. Diversityis the key to our countrys success. As

examples, Steve Jobs, former CEO ofApple, Sergy Brin, one of the founders ofGoogle, and countless others have en-riched our country. I believe that we needto legislate policy that can enable manymore immigrants to come to the U.S.

Illegal immigration has attract-ed criticism in the United States. Manybelieve that illegal aliens receive unde-served federal aid, such as welfare, Medi-care, Medicaid, educational grants, and

preferred tuition rates, without paying tax-es. This belief makes many Americans oppose more liberal policies.

In contrast to this view, the Center for American Progress, an independent non-partisan educational institute, reports the following: With a comprehensive immigrationreform plan that includes legalization for all undocumented immigrants currently li ving inthe United States, $1.5 trillion would be added to the U.S. governments domestic productover 10 years. While many have complained that illegal immigrants dont pay taxes, that isuntrue. In fact, households headed by unauthorized immigrants paid $11.5 billion in stateand local taxes in 2010. Approximately 5 billion of additional net tax revenue would accrueto the federal government over three years if all undocumented immigrants currently livingin the United States were legalized.

In contrast, $2.6 trillion is the amount of money that would evaporate from theU.S. cumulative GDP over 10 years if all undocumented immigrants in the country weredeported or self deported. Just the cost of removing the entire undocumented populationfrom the United States over a five-year period would be $285 billion. These statistics i llus-trate that we benefit from immigration and shows that immigration is a net asset to ourcountry.

Due to controversy in politics, there is now no real viable method for illegal al-iens to obtain citizenship. This obstacle to citizenship creates a situation where they can-not contribute fully to our society. Many cannot go home either for lack of opportunity orbeing brought here when they were very young and therefore do not have cultural ties totheir former countries. We need a process that is fair and reasonable, leading to legalimmigration.

This topic should be very dear to us all. America is a haven, which has openeddoors for most of us here at MDY. Our parents, grandparents, or great grandparents haveimmigrated to America to open doors for future generations, to open doors for us. So whynot let others do the same for their families? -Abraham Tobias

    No midterms next year!

Well, rumor has it that the MDY administration

has come up with a new plan for next year known

as The Trimester. As editor-in-chief, I had the

chance to confirm this rumor as true!

I have the inside scoop on whats reallygoingon this upcoming Fall 2013. Mrs. Tokayer, Rabbi

Lebowitz, and I discussed the concept of the

trimester system, and I personally find it beneficial

to the upcoming freshmen class, as well as the

rest of the MDY student body.

Instead of having two semesters, we will now

have three; hence, the trimester. There wont be

any January midterms which will, in turn, leave

us more class time. The freshmen class will have a wide range of electives to choose from. Each

semester they will be able to take a class which will focus on their major choice. This will help

the students become more open-minded, in addition to develop an attractive resume starting from

the 9th grade! The sophomores will be able to choose a 2nd level course focusing on their majors as

    well.

You are probably wondering how this will affect the juniors and seniors, right? Well, this has a major

impact college-wise, on both juniors and seniors. Instead of a transcript which contains two final

averages, students will have a chance to increase their GPA with three final grades. As always, the

seniors will still have the internship program as a way to introduce them to their career field of

    choice.

The idea is still developing, and it is so exciting to know how everyone will soon enjoy all that MDY

    has to come!

    Dvar Torah

    By Hannah Cohen

When you see the donkey of someone you hate lying under its burden, you

must make every effort to help him.

In this weeks Parasha, the Torah encourages us to help others, including our ene-

mies. The Chofetz Chaim tells us that even though the owner of the donkey is evil

and gives us reason to hate him, we must still be kind to him and help him. What if

the donkey was carrying life-saving medicines? The obligation to help would be

even greater. Certainly we would help in every possible way.

The Chofetz Chaim concludes that we must try to help the person who is trying to

provide for the people who learn Torah. The Torah tells us because [the Torah] is

your life. The Torah is spiritual strength for your soul. Without it we cannot possible

live or exist. The ones who learn it are compared to those that bring life to the world.

We can learn two valuable lessons from this Pasuk. Just because you hate some-

one, doesnt mean you shouldnt help him when he is in trouble. Secondly, do not

look down upon people who study Torah all day and are supported by their parents.

We have an obligation to help those who are constantly learning Torah, because

those who study Torah are bringing life to the world.

Be happy in the moment thats enough. Each moment is

    all we need, not more.

    -Anonymous

This quote means that we should be happy right now and in the moment that we

are living in. That is the key to being happy. Happiness is the key to li fe, and the key

Instead of thinking about what is to come, or counting down towards something,

take a minute and just appreciate what you have right now and what is around you.

    THE DIRTY DOZENBy:Tina Roubin

The Dirty Dozen is something that our teachers developed as a way for students to use proper grammar.

The teachers took the twelve worst offences of mistakes students have been making on their paper, and

instituted a rule that if a student makes three or more of these mistakes on any paper in any subject, he/

she receives a stamp on the assignment and is required to rewrite it. The assignment is then marked

    late.

There has been a lot of buzz about the Dirty Dozen, and it seems as though it is all anyone is talking

about! I interviewed various students and teachers about their reactions to this new initiative, and we had

    a wide range of responses!

    Fashion

    News

    Hi everyone!

This week, we had the opportunity to interview celebrity guest

    Leandra Medine

    AKAThe Man Repeller

    Jennifer Harari

Leandra Medine is the author of the

Man Repeller Blog. Her blog is based on the

concept that many times, women dress in

fashions meant to impress other women, and

as a result the high-fashion items often repel

men. Leandras goal is to inspire women to

dress for themselves, and to wear what they

like. While she began her blog in 2010 as a

hobby, she quickly gained popularity and has

been featured everywhere from Vogue and

Glamour to CNN, Forbes, and The New York

    Times.

JH: Writing a blog started out as a hobby for you. How did it become a career?LM: I was kind of strategic about partnerships I would forge and where they would take me.

JH: When did you realize you wanted to be in fashion?LM: When the Paris Review asked Ernest Hemingway when he knew he wanted to be a writer, he said he always knew. I think my experience with fashion is similar.

JH: You were recently voted into Vogues Best of 2012 and Forbes 30 Under 30. You have 240,000 followers on Instagram, 117,000 followers on Twitter, and

your webpage as 2 million views a month. Whats next?LM: I HAVE NO IDEA! Im just like, Thank you, Hashem. This has been really nice.

JH: In your career, you receive many gifts from various designers from the world renowned and those just starting out. What was the first gift you received, and

what was your favorite?LM: I try not to accept that many gifts, actually, because it impedes on the journalistic integrity of a writer. But, my favori te gift has certainly got to have been a pair of pink triple

stack suede fringed Christian Louboutin heels.

JH: I am sure you bump into a lot of celebrities. Have any left you feeling completely star-struck?LM: Lena Dunham every time.

JH: You went to Ramaz High School, where they implemented a strict dress code much like ours. How did you fit your unique sense of style within the limits of the

    school dress code?

LM: I actually didnt really. It was an interesting exploration in style simply in that I had to rely on other things to convey the same point of view that fashion often implies.

JH: Do you have any advice for all of us Man-Repellers?LM: IT IS OKAY TO GET MARRIED LATER.

JH: What is something you love about being a part of the Syrian-Jewish community?LM: It is a perpetual comfort zone.

    JH: Who is your inspiration?

    LM: You.

JH: We are all wearing trends that you picked out (Supergas, sneaker wedges, etc.). What do you think will be next? Pink flamingos and googly eyes?LM: Lets hope roller-skates. That could be fun.

    School Event Zoom-In:

Chinese Students Visit Magen David Yeshivah HS!By: Leon Betesh

This week, MDYHS hosted 40 Chinese students from China. We all congregated in the Midrash, and

every Magen David student involved in the program was grouped with two Chinese students. First we asked

them questions about their daily lives in China, and how their school is different than ours. We learned that

they have 3000 students in their school, with 80 students in each class!! We also asked them about their per-

sonal lives, such as what their hobbies and favorite foods or types of music were.

The two boys who I was paired with were Tao Ran and Zhu Xi. They were both 15 years old and

they shared the same hobbies as I do such as playing basketball or going on the computer. Since I am current-

ly taking Mandarin Chinese in school, I had an edge on everybody else there. Sure, I wasnt speaking fluent

Chinese, but I was able to pick up on some words that they were saying. Next the Chinese students gave us all

gifts. I received Chinese fans, postcards, and floose (dont worry it only equaled $1.60).

After talking for some time we were asked to come up with a formula of success. We came up with a

long list constituting of things such as handwork, taking risks, setting goals, teamwork, etc. It was fascinating

working together with other students from a different country. I really found this helpful because I hope to even-

tually visit China some time in the future, and this was a great source of networking. We exchanged e-mails

and even took a picture together.

    The Ballpoint Pen

A Serial by Leo SorcherEpisode 1/3

The day started off as any. I woke up to the loud sound of my mother screaming in agony. That man means nothing to me! I heard my mother yell as my father hit her over and

over again. But this was nothing new to me. This happened occasionally, and there as nothing I could do about it. I held my pale hands to my ears until the screaming stopped,

then sat up in my bed to discover another leak coming from the rusty ceiling of my small bedroom. I wasnt surprised, though. My house was falling apart, and my parents and I

knew it. But I also knew there was no way we could afford any repairs. As I got out of bed to look for a bucket for the leak, my father barged angrily into my bedroom. Jason!

Didnt I tell you to take out the garbage last night?! He yelled at me. And then he started to hit me.

Eddie! Eddie, wake up! Youre kicking and screaming in your sleep! A familiar voice said to me while tugging on my arm. I opened my eyes to find my beautiful wife,

Victoria, sitting up in our king sized bed. She looked at me curiously. I noticed that half of our gold, silk blanket was sprawled out on the wine-colored carpet.

Victoria, I am so sorry I woke you! Did I wake the kids? I said, as I glanced at the gold clock on my brown mahogany night table. It was 6 a.m.

No, theyre still sleeping. Are you okay? She asked me.

Yes, Im fine. I was just having a nightmare. I assured her. Go back to sleep, honey. Im going to get ready for work.

After I showered, dressed myself in one of my best suits, and made sure I had my iPhone 5 that I didnt go anywhere without, I walked down the marble staircase of my

four-story mansion to find my chauffeur waiting for me by the front door. Good morning, Chris. Please take me to AndersonCorp. I have a big presentation to work on.

Of course, Mr. Anderson, Chris said to me as he opened the front door for me and walked with me down the endless driveway to my long, black, stretch limousine.

I took out the garbage while I iced my left cheekbone. My mother was sitting at the kitchen table, watching me, and I couldnt help but get angry with her. Why do you let him

treat us this way? Stand up for us! Youre not a f ifteen-year-old boy like me. You shouldnt let that man abuse us! I said furiously to her.

Jason! Dont talk about him that way. No matter what he does, he is still your father and he can do whatever pleases him, she said to me coldly. I knew she was scared of him,

and thats why she never stood up for us. I was not going to live my years being abused by my father for the rest of my life.

As I entered my large office that said Edward Anderson, CEO of AndersonCorp on the door. Sarah, my secretary, greeted me.

Good morning, Mr. Anderson. I have an envelope for you that somebody left here for you this morning. They said it should go directly to you, and nobody else. I left it

    on your desk.

Thank you, Sarah. I can always count on you for anything, I said to her as I sat down by my glass desk. I spotted the envelope in the center of my desk and picked it

up. It was a plain, white envelope that said Jason. I began to panic. Why did the envelope say my real name? Nobody was supposed to know that about my past. Who sent the

    envelope?

I nervously ripped the envelope to find a small, simple, white paper. The paper read, I know your secret.

parking. She pulls out a Tehillim book and begins praying, Please, Hashem! Find

me a spot and I will never say lashon hara! Two seconds later, a spot opens up in

front of her and she pulls in. Sorry Hashem, she says, Thanks anyway. I found

    one myself!

    Madeleines Baking Corner

This week we wanted to discuss a serious health issue, sweets.

Sweet treats are usually considered to be things like cookies, ice cream, cakes,

and candy. We all know to stay away from these things, but do we really know

    why?

One of the reasons is because sugar turns into fat. Sugar is high in calories, and

low in nutritional value. A superfluous amount of sugar can easily bring on a sug-

ar craving, or even worse cause Diabetes. Having too much sugar can alsocause someones immune system to not respond at its best.

Who knew that sugar can affect a person so much?

Well, the food companies do! Thats why you need to be especially careful when

they claim something is healthy because it can still have added sugars. It is

therefore always important to look at nutritional facts when buying or eating

something. A great substitute for sweets is fresh fruit. Fruit satisfies any sugar

craving someone might have, without them overdoing it. However, sometimes

fruit can also do the opposite. You need to have fruit in moderation. Just because

something is good for you does not mean that you can eat it without any limits.

    Everything comes in moderation.

Another great way to satisfy your sweet craving is by having sweet potatoes!

Sweet potatoes still have the sugary, sweet taste and everyone desires, but it hassome great nutritional value as well! You can have a sweet potato plain, with a

salad, or our personal favorite, as baked fries!

Here are more healthy tips to help you limit your sugar intake:

    1. Try to buy cereal with low sugar.

    2. Dont totally deprive yourself. Have a cookie or cake in moderation.

    3. Late night snacks will hurt you! Be careful that you don't eat everything in

sight. Have cut up fruit or a cup of tea when those cravings hit.

    4. When buying food, look for low fructose items. Fructose is a type of sugar.

    5. Be especially careful with yogurts. Some companies say they are so healthy,

when in fact they have 20 grams of sugar.

    6. Do Not drink your sugar by having soda, including Snapple!

Nutrition & Health By Frances C. Mamiye and Michelle Catton Peanut Butter Smores Brownies

These are very easy to make, but they are so good! I have made them

many times, and they are truly heavenly!

    1. Bake the brownies according to package instructions for cake-like

    brownies.

    2. About 5 minutes before the brownies are done, remove them from

the oven and cover with mini marshmallows. Put the brownies

back in the oven for approximately 5 minutes more, just until the

marshmallows are melted. Remove from the oven and let cool.

    3. In a small pot over low heat, mix the peanut butter and chocolate

chips until creamy. Remove from the heat and add the Rice Krisp-

    ies.

    4. When the brownies are cooled, spread the peanut-butter mixture

    evenly over the top.

    5. When the topping hardens, cut the brownies into cubes and place

a mini marshmallow on top of each one.

    Enjoy!

    Ingredients

    1 box brownie mix

    1/2 bag mini marshmallows

6 ounces peanut butter6 ounces chocolate chips

    1 cup Rice Krispies

    Varsity Hockey

So, we are on our way back from our second game this

week. We had a tight schedule thanks to Sandy, and all of our

games were pushed up and squeezed back to back. But, thats

no excuse to play any less than 110%. When we play our hard-

est we come out on top.

We made it to the playoffs this year, and we plan to go

far. We dont just play hockey. The whole night is an adventure,

from the minute we meet up in the center to the post game bus

    hangouts.

No matter who we play, when we play, or how we play,

we will always play like a team; we will always play like Warriors!

    Girls Basketball Team

    By Gina Malach

Last Monday, the girls basketball team played Shulamith

High School. It was a very fun and interesting game, and we are

happy to report that our team finally won! The final score was 15-

    24 Magen David.

Unfortunately, our next game didnt go as well. Last Tues-

day night we played Shalhevet in Long Island. It was such an in-

tense game. Even though we lost by one point , with the final

score 31-30, our team as a whole really worked our hardest.

Every day we plan on practicing harder to make it to the

final championship game. We know we can make it happen!

    Signing Day

    By: Albert Zalta

Wednesday marked one of the most anticipated days

in college football. It was national signing day.

So who was the winner of this years recruiting title?

According to national rankings, the Alabama Crimson

Tide have achieved this title for the fifth time in the

past six years, a recognizable accomplishment. This

years feat was led by defensive end Jonathan Allen,

linebacker Reuben Foster, and tight end O.J. Howard,

three five-star prospects followed by many others.

Although Alabama won in rankings, Robert

Nkemdiche, number one overall prospect committed

himself to the Ole Miss Rebels. With his tremendous

speed and size, defensive end Nkemdiche has the po-

tential to change the Rebels defense from the mo-

ment he step on the field.

Ole Miss also gained top-ranked offensive tackle Lare-

my Tunsil to make a run for the title. Florida, Ohio

State, and Notre Dame also came up big with rankings

in the top five, each addressing their teams specific

needs for a run at the title.

The only thing to do now is wait and see who will rise

and who will fall under pressure.

    Baseball and Performance Enhancing Drugs

    By: Ally Menasche

For a long time, PEDs have been linked to the game of baseball. Many peopleare starting to believe that the game is a joke because of the amount of play-

ers who are cheating their way to get paid by taking these hormones. This off-

season, PEDs have had a major impact in Major League Baseball, and have

    once again embarrassed the game.

For the first time since 1996, no players have been named to the Baseball

Hall of Fame. Some of the players who had the chance of getting in were Bar-

ry Bonds and Roger Clemens, both of whom were linked to PEDs. Through-

out their entire careers these players went out and made their millions by

cheating. These two players were a lock to get into the Hall of Fame until they

were caught taking drugs known as steroids. It is the actions of players like

this that are destroying the game of baseball and making a mockery of it.

Another situation that the MLB is currently investigating is a clinic in Miami

where Dr. Bosch has reportedly distributed performance enhancing drugs.

While investigating, the MLB found a list of names of people who had visited

Dr. Bosch. Most of these players have already been caught and are currently

suspended for taking steroids, such as Alex Rodriguez, Bartolo Colon, and

Melky Cabrera. Among the new names that have been linked to the clinic are

Gio Gonzales, Nelson Crus, Francisco Cervelli, and Jesus Montero.

Most of the players linked to the clinic have had a major impact to their teams,

most notably Alex Rodrigues and Ryan Braun. Even though Braun was never

suspended for the first time he was caught taking steroids due to complica-

tions on the delivery of his drug test, he may very well get suspended now. As

for Alex Rodriguez, who is still owed 115 million dollars throughout four years,

his career might be coming to an end sooner rather than later as the Yankees

are trying to void his contract. Alex Rodriguezs name has been mentioned

the most due to the fact that this is now the second time hes been caught

after admitting on television that he was wrong and would never do it again.

The MLB is not ready to suspend any of these players as the investigation is

still ongoing. However, unless these players can somehow prove their inno-

cence it looks as though they will be suspended. The game of baseball has

taken a major hit this offseason, and they are doing the best they can to clean

up the game with drug testing every year. Even though baseball has a reputa-

tion of PED users, finding the source of where the drugs might be coming

from is a major step toward cleaning up the game for good.

Mr. Arbesfeld, Crossword Creator!By Abraham Tobias

AT:Is it true you create crossword puzzles for The New York Times? Tell us a

little about that.AA: Yes, creating crossword puzzles has been a hobby of mine for as long as I can

remember. Hundreds of people, including myself, create puzzles and submit them,

and the editor decides which to publish. I have had around 100 of them published

    (and even more denied)!

AT: What first intrigued you to create one?AA: I have always been fascinated by crossword puzzles, dating back to a project I

did in elementary school. I began solving them and that eventually led to me making

my own. My parents were also always working on them, so I was always around it.

AT: What originally gave you the idea to submit one to the NYT?

AA: The NYT is the most prestigious place a person can get his/her crossword pub-

lished, and is really the ultimate goal for anyone making them.

AT: What is your favorite thing about crosswords?AA: The challenge of it. Its like solving a math problem.

AT: When was the last crossword of yours published?AA: Around October, November.

AT: Can we expect to see one soon? I know well be looking!AA: One should be coming really soon! In fact the publisher recently accepted a few

submissions of mine, although they dont always inform us when ours will come out.
