July
A month of celebrating,
working together, fellowship
and new opportunities!
NEWSLETTER DEADLINE JUNE 15
Newsletter deadlines being what they are, I sit here writing a farewell
note in the newsletter a full month before my last Sunday on July
23rd. With, VBS, three more Sunday sermons, and a weeklong
service trip with our youth ahead of me, it is hard to imagine that the
end of my internship is near!
Many of you asked what is next for me after First Lutheran, so let me
take a moment and fill you in on the plans. Next year I will be
returning to Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago for my final
year of studies. Sometime in February 2018 the Bishops will meet
and assign me to a region and ultimately a synod. If all goes well, I
will graduate from LSTC on May 20th and will become eligible to be
called by a congregation and ordained within the synod for which I
have been assigned. Given Wesley’s current position with Bethany
Swine Services/Pipestone, I will be commuting to Hyde Park,
Chicago this next academic year for school from DeKalb. Then,
when/if I am finally called by a congregation, we will make decisions
about our next location.
If our near future seems transient and uncertain, it is! Prayers as
Wesley and I navigate this time of ambiguity are welcome. Prayers
that there might be a congregation out there willing to call me as a
pastor are very welcome!
Next year, our intention is to worship at Bethlehem Lutheran Church
in order that the next Vicar can have the freedom and experience she
deserves on her internship year. Fanya Burford-Berry, next year’s
intern, is a much beloved member of the seminary community in
Chicago. I’m excited for the gifts, experience, and love of Christ she
will bring to First Lutheran next year.
There is not enough space here for me to fully express my
appreciation to this congregation. You all took a chance on allowing
me to join your community and for that I will always be grateful.
Pastor Janet is an outstanding leader and mentor, the staff of First
Lutheran are top notch and work extremely hard in a thousand behind
the scenes ways, the congregation is supportive and loving. Always
remember that, even with all the amazing charity work, funds, and
services that this congregation provides to the larger community, the
most precious gift we have to give is the gift of Jesus Christ and His
Gospel. Be bold in your proclamation of the Good News! The world
is still yearning for this message.
Serving as your intern-vicar has been an honor,
Vicar Preston Fields

Dear Members of First Lutheran,
As I begin my new life of retirement, I want to
thank all of you for your friendship and support
throughout the past 32 years. When I started so
many years ago, I had no idea that I would
become part of such a special family.
Mary Colvin and her crew deserve special
thanks and praise for the reception held for me on
Sunday, June 11. Thank you all for coming, thank
you all for the cards and kind words both spoken and written, and thank
you for the gift certificate to The Hillside. Thanks also to Pastor Tom
Hanson and Randy Stubbs for making the long trip to be part of my special
day.
After getting home that day, I truly enjoyed reading the many cards I
received and the good wishes you all expressed. Thank you from the
bottom of my heart to each and every one of you.
God's Blessings Always,
Lynn

MOVING MINISTRY UPDATE: Remember last month when the
Storage Units were stuffed with furniture? Come and see it
now! Come and see how you can share with other First Men in
receiving donated furniture, organizing it within the storage units,
and delivering those and other pieces — especially beds — to our
DeKalb County brothers and sisters who do not have basic
furniture.

Summer Lunch Program The Summer
Lunch Program at the Methodist Church is in full
swing. Mounds of fresh fruit and vegetables donated
by Schnuck’s and the community gardens lie
waiting to be washed and cut into bitesize pieces. I’d
never seen such large jars of peanut butter and jam
or so many loaves of bread ready to become PB&Js
to feed the hungry families in our community. In
addition, a hot meal is served by volunteers and
boxed lunches are passed out to children on a list.
At around noon each weekday the room is filled
with smiles and chatter as families gather for what
is probably their main meal of the day. As one boy
happily ate his French toast, eggs, sausage, and
fruit, he told me, “This is really a brunch!”
Thank you to all who have signed up to participate in
this opportunity to do “God’s work” with “our
hands.” Time slots of 2 hour shifts are still available
to help on Thursdays through August 3rd.
Please consider joining the fun and ministry of feeding our neighbors.

Your hands—along with rest of you—are needed to do God’s work on the
first and third Wednesday of every month to make
quilts for Lutheran World Relief! No, you don’t
have to know a thing about quilting. If you do,
that’s great, too. Just show up!
This month we will meet on July 5 and 19. You
can also sew Love Packets, available at the R
Donation Center in the atrium. Easy instructions
are included for making a quilt top. Another way to help is by donating yard
goods. Again, look for the basket in the atrium.
You can also pick up a list of personal care kit items, stapled on a paper bag
into which you can place the items, in the atrium as well.
You can also help provide cash for shipping, or needed materials:
New fabric (yard good of any size)
Drapes and curtains (no sheers or fiberglass)
Blankets, bedspreads, mattress pads, sheets, pillowcases
Quilt batting
Good quality sewing thread
Crochet or similar cord for tying
It’s important that all of these items be clean and in good condition.
Please leave donations in the basket in the atrium. Thank you!
LWR Baby Care Kits
We are on our way to completing 125
baby care kits for Lutheran World Relief
by September! Our volunteers, led by
Arija Weber, are most in need
of: receiving blankets, diaper pins, socks,
flannel sheets or yards of flannel
material (to make diapers),jackets/sweaters (that button/snap/zip/velcro
down the front) ,flat fold (preferred) or pre-fold cloth diapers.
We are always in need of everything that is needed to make the kits.
Bring in your donations any time! Stop in the atrium and grab a list
from the LWR bulletin. (http://lwr.org/babycarekits)
Monetary donations would be appreciated as well! Other volunteers
love the thrill of finding good deals, and would be happy to put your
money to good use for babies!
Council News Page 5
At the request of Church Council, Bill Sanders, Gerry Sanderson, Al
Fisher, Barbara Baie, and Dave Olsen have agreed to serve on the
First Lutheran Canopy Advisory Group. The FLCAG's purpose is
to consult with the Architect Donald Whitmore to create drawings and
plans for a canopy for the congregation to consider. Should the
congregation vote to move forward with the construction of the
canopy, the members of FLCAG will continue to work with the
architect through the project completion. Bill Sanders will chair the
committee and Mike Bauling will serve as an ex-officio member and
liaison between the project and the Council. Thank you all for your
willingness to serve!
Meet our next Intern
Greetings Rev. Hunt and members of First
Lutheran Church,
I am writing to confirm my acceptance of
the internship. I am delighted I am to be
serving First Lutheran as your vicar as of
Augst 1, 2017. I really enjoyed our
conversations and look forward to learning
from the members of First Lutheran, the
staff and you.

to be a youth minister. God blessed her with a full-time position as a
youth minister at Holy Spirit Catholic Community in Naperville, IL.
Fanya is a Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago’s Public Church
Fellow. She serves as a board member of World Day of Prayer and
Women Gathering for Justice. Fanya is a Womanist theologian

Know the Ten Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease submitted by Cathy Foelske, R.N.
Your memory often changes as you grow older.
But memory loss that disrupts daily life is not a
typical part of aging. It may be a symptom of
dementia. Dementia is a slow decline in
memory, thinking and reasoning skills. The
most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s
disease, a fatal disorder that results in the loss of
brain cells and function. The ten warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease
are: 1) Memory loss that disrupts daily life. 2) Challenges in planning or
solving problems. 3) Difficulty completing familiar tasks. 4) Confusion
with time and place. 5) Trouble understanding visual images and spatial
relationships. 6) New problems with words in speaking or writing. 7)
Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps. 8) Decreased or
poor judgment. 9) Withdrawal from work or social activities. 10)
Changes in mood and personality. Early detection matters. For
information on Alzheimer’s, call: 800.272.3900. (Source: Alzheimer’s
Association submitted by Cathy Foelske, R.N.)
What is diakonia™
Want to learn more about your Christian faith in the Lutheran tradition?
Want to be more effective as a servant of Christ to others? If your answer
to either of those questions is “Yes!”, the Northern Illinois Synod
diakonia™ program may be for you.
diakonia™ if a two-year program of theological education for adults who
want to grow in their faith and discover new directions for putting that
faith into practice. A series of 12 courses, each five weeks in length,
cover topics such as the Daily Life of a Christian, the Old and New
Testaments, Communicating the Gospel, Lutheran Confessions, and
Christian Ethics. The courses do not have to be taken consecutively, so if
you want to try any of them out, you’re welcome to do so. Tuition and
book costs are minimal, and financial aid is available for those who could
not otherwise afford the program.
For more information, contact the Northern Illinois Synod diakonia™
coordinator, Denise Rode, here at First Lutheran, or call 815/756-8321, or
email [email protected]. Classes are offered here at the church on Monday
evenings from 6-9 p.m., starting Monday, September 11.
Women’s Ministry Page 10
Women’s Night Out
You are invited to join other women from the church at Women’s Night
Out. We will meet next on Tuesday, July 25 at 6:00 PM. These dinners are
based on the simple concept that it is enjoyable to get together for an
evening of fellowship with our sisters in Christ.
Prelude — Women’s Bible Study Women, come join us for a Bible study on the second and fourth Thursday
morning of each month. The Bible Study will meet on July 13 and 27
beginning at 9:00 AM using the study in the Gather magazine for women.
The group meets in the Community Room. Come and join a lively
discussion and enjoy a cup of coffee and the fellowship of your sisters in
Christ. Newcomers are always welcome.
Altar Guild News In this month of July your altar guild will be preparing the sanctuary for
services, including filling candles, setting up for communion, and making
sure the space is ready.
The weekends of: July 2nd will be covered by Jean Pumfrey, Dee
Anderson and Carole Johnson. July 9th will be covered by Tarryn Thaden
and Jan Setchell. July 16th will be covered by Kayla Kittleson and Dee
Anderson. July 30th will be covered by Terri Kuhns.
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 19th, where we will continue to fill out the schedule and plan for fall.
Ever thought you would like to serve the church in an exciting and fun way,
join us September 19th in the Community Room. We would love to have
you. Can’t make it that night? Contact Stephanie Corn, Terri Kuhns or
talk with any member.
Carol Stubbs update: Carol has now passed day 30 since her transplant of
receiving her own white blood cells. Things are basically moving as
expected, and that is good. The very good news is that one of Carol's
brothers is a match for her next transplant! For that next stage of treatment,
tentatively scheduled for mid-August, having a sibling matching donor is
the best option that we could get! Thanks be to God for this encouraging
news. Cultural Arts Center update: Randy sent this note on June 14th:
Greetings from Amsterdam! I am halfway back to Tanzania for a busy two
weeks of work. Tomorrow I expect that we will issue "substantial
completion" and get keys to our new Cultural Arts Centre and Music
Department buildings. Next week is the Music Department final end-of-
semester concert. The following week is the official dedication of the new
buildings with some pretty big guests coming. Then Marissa and I board the
big blue and white plane (KLM) to return to the States for Family time with
the whole Family: Carol, Megan, Nathan, Marissa, and me.
Thank you Page 7
LWR THANK YOU
Thank you to the First Lutheran Church community for your help and
support for our third annual Lutheran World Relief Mission Trip, April
22-29, 2017. Sixteen willing participants (eleven from First Lutheran -
Garry and Connie Briesacher, Dennis and Bev Heaney, Darrel and
Barbara Henson, Lucile Reynen, Barney and Carol Schroeder,
Michael and Sharon Wadle) traveled to New Windsor, MD, to spend
the week helping prepare LWR quilts and kits for overseas
shipment. We spent four days working at the warehouse and four days
traveling and sightseeing. At the warehouse we opened boxes from
congregations across the U.S., and repacked a total of 688 large
cardboard cartons of school, personal care, baby care, and fabric kits to
be loaded in large rail/ocean shipping containers for overseas
distribution. 688 cartons are enough to fill one and one third shipping
containers! We had a hard working and diligent crew! In addition,
some of our crew helped unload 2 semi trailers of quilts and kits from
all over the country, and some helped repackage Church World Service
health care kits. We also got to see the process of loading 4 huge
shipping containers of quilts and kits for the Evangelical Lutheran
Church of Peru to distribute to families devastated by recent heavy rains
and flooding in that country. When we weren't working at the
warehouse, we enjoyed enjoyed fellowship, devotional time together,
and playing games. An afternoon was spent in Baltimore visiting with
LWR national staff and with staff from Lutheran Immigration and
Refugee Services (LIRS), as well as relaxing at the Inner Harbor
seaport. Some of us enjoyed more than our share of great seafood, and
we took time on the travels to and from MD to stop at the Flight 93
National Memorial at
Shanksville, PA, and most
of one day was spent at
Gettysburg, PA. We
worked, we played, we
enjoyed being together,
and we helped in the
worldwide mission
outreach of our whole
church. Thank you, people
of First Lutheran, for
encouraging us, supporting
us, and praying for
us. Hopefully next year
you will consider going!
