My dear Brothers and Sisters on Advent Pilgrimage,

Happy Advent! It's here! And thanks be to God for all the joyous carols already filling the air as we begin our New Liturgical or Church year beginning again to ponder the world's need for our Savior.

In the four weeks of Advent we recall the longing of God's people for the Messiah (in the Old Testament) and at the same time our own gratitude for already knowing Him in Jesus, but also with his grace trying to more fully open our hearts and lives to his love and plan for us.

What follows are some suggestions for a wonderful Advent.

Make an Advent wreath with candles and set it on the dining room table or in the place where your family prays. Pray the mysteries of the Rosary together around the wreath or around your Nativity Scene (Be sure not to put the baby Jesus in the manger until Christmas Eve!). One of my most cherished childhood memories is of Advent when we used to take turns lighting (and blowing out) the Advent candles at dinner and singing "O Come O come Emmanuel" together as a family. Advent calendars are also wonderful ways to pray in expectation and joy at the coming birth of the Christ child. The tradition of the Jesse Tree is beautiful: https://www.catholicculture.org/culture/liturgicalyear/activities/view.cfm?id=545

Prepare the manger of your heart by making a good confession! In addition to our usual Saturday and first Friday confessions, we've added an extra hour on Sunday at 4:45 pm. There will also be a Parish Penance service on December 16 at 7:00 pm.

Another wonderful practice, really for anytime of the year, is "making a visit." Making a visit simply means stopping in a Catholic Church to spend a few minutes (or as long as you want) with Jesus in the Tabernacle. St Mary's is open from 6:00 am until 6:00 pm Monday to Friday, and Jesus awaits your few minutes with him. Attending Daily Mass more in Advent would be awesome too!

Stay close to Mary in Advent! We will offer a special Bi-lingual Mass on December 12 at 7:00 pm in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It should be beautiful!

An Advent evening of Praise and Worship will be offered on Friday, December 13 at 7:00 pm by Dennis Keller, Barb Crammond, Mindy Cochran and guests. The Collinsville Chorale will present a wonderful Christmas Concert here at St Mary's on December 8 at 3:00 pm.

Also, please feel free to take one of the Advent booklets from the table in the vestibule or at the side entrance of the Church. One per family please. These offer wonderful meditations and prayers for each day of Advent. Share them as a family! Also find daily Advent meditations online at https://watch.formed.org/advent-reflections-preparing-for-the-birth-of-our-savior-with-tim-gray using our parish subscription.

May Mother Mary and St Joseph help to lead you to your most grace-filled Christmas ever in these four holy weeks of Advent!

THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENTFocus: Advent is a time to prepare for the Lord.

In this season of Advent, we remember our place in salvation history. We remember that we, who again and again break the covenant established with God, are offered salvation through that same God who came as a baby to live, suffer, die and rise so that we may live forever with him.

In the first reading, Isaiah prophesies that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established and raised, and that instruction shall come out from Zion. Then God will judge between nations. Saint Paul warns the Romans that salvation is imminent, and that they should cast off sin and darkness and choose to live in the light of Jesus Christ. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus speaks to his disciples about the people of Noah’s time who were living carelessly when the flood came, and warns that as it was then, so it is for them. They must be watchful and ready, for God will come at an hour they do not expect.

PART ONE - THE PROFESSION OF FAITHSECTION ONE - "I BELIEVE" - "WE BELIEVE"

Man’s Response To God / I Believe – The Obedience of Faith

146. Abraham thus fulfils the definition of faith in Hebrews 11:1: "Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen":7 "Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness."8 Because he was "strong in his faith", Abraham became the "father of all who believe".9

FORMED PICK OF THE WEEKGuadalupe: The Miracle and the Message

The Heart of the Evangelization of the AmericasThe most important event in the evangelization of the New World occurred in December of 1531. Over the course of four days, the Virgin Mary, as Our Lady of Guadalupe, appeared to an indigenous convert named Juan Diego. As a result of this encounter, the image miraculously imprinted on Juan Diego’s tilma (cloak). This gripping film explores both the inexplicable mysteries behind the image and the continued relevance of this Marian apparition to the modern world.

AN ADVENT PRAYER FOR FAMILIESHeavenly Father, your son, Jesus, is your greatest gift to us, a great sign of your love. Guide us as we strive to walk in that love together as a family this Advent. As we prepare our hearts for Christmas, bring us closer to each other and to your son. Give us the grace and strength we need every day. Help us to always trust in you. Come, Lord Jesus, lead all people closer to you. Come and dispel the darkness of our world with the light of your love. Amen. From dynamiccatholic.com

Becoming a Saint Life & Death > Servant of God > Venerable > Blessed > SaintBeatification of Fulton Sheen The Venerable Fulton Sheen will become Blessed Fulton Sheen on December 21, 2019 at the Beatification Ceremony to be held at 10:00 AM, at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Peoria, Illinois. This is the same Cathedral where Sheen was ordained a priest 100 years ago on September 20, 1919. The Cathedral is also the resting place for Sheen, who is entombed in a marble vault next to the altar where he was ordained. Check https://celebratesheen.com/ if you would like to attend in person. St. Mary's is planning to host a simulcast of the ceremony for those who cannot travel to Peoria. More information forthcoming.Venerable Augustus Tolton Did you notice that Father Augustus Tolton became Venerable this past summer? The Church declares that "he lived the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity and the cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance at a heroic level." This local man who escaped slavery and became a priest despite much opposition is up for sainthood, if only we can prove that his intercession has obtained miracles! Visit https://tolton.archchicago.org/ where you can read about his life and how to get involved in this process of recognizing his sanctity.Venerable Bruno Lanteri, OMV Don't miss the reading group on the founder of your priests and brothers, the Oblates of the Virgin Mary!
