This first week we

explore the fundamentals

of preparation. How do

we prepare for big events

in our lives? We get a

vision, an idea; then we

make lists of things which

need to be accomplished.

We may have to change

our schedules, and, most

certainly, our priorities in

order to be READY.

This brings up our main

question of the first week:

WHAT are we getting

ready for? (or better yet,

WHO?)

Advent

Week I

Ready

for

Change:

Open

Advent Family Time

Week I: Formation Questions 1. Think of a time you needed to “get ready” for

something big. What was involved? What did

you do? What needed to be changed?

2. How did you know when you were “ready”?

3. What is it like feeling as if you’re NOT ready?

4. What are the practical examples of getting

ready as expressed in the second reading this

week? (Romans 13:11-14)

How do they apply to you?

5. Preparing for and receiving Jesus into your life

will mean changes. Are you afraid to change?

What are you afraid of? Do you think that Jesus

will ask you something that you cannot do? Or

that you will not do? Or do not want to do?

6. In what ways do I need to be more open to the

bigger world picture and not just my own corner?

7. One way I can prepare for Christ this week is

A Big Thank You to Lori Keppler (Faith Formation Director—Saint Mary) for designing the Advent graphic seen on our worship aid for the Emmaus Pastorate! Lori also submitted a design to the Archdiocese for the NCYC logo to represent us at the NCYC convention. Lori’s design was chosen and used for the shirts worn by over 1,700 Dubuque young people at NCYC. Thanks for your beautiful work, Lori; we AND the whole Archdiocese of Dubuque appreciate your talent! Are You Recently Engaged? Are You Starting to Plan Your Wedding? Terrific! The Church is excited to assist you in preparing for your lifelong commitment! Some quick points to be aware of: • Marriage preparation usually begins at least six months prior to a desired wedding date. • No dates are scheduled until the couple meets with the pastor and fills out the necessary documents for marriage. • If one or both have been in a previous marriage regardless of denomination or marriage by a justice of the peace, a Decree of Nullity (Annulment) will need to be obtained in order to continue receiving the sacraments. The best thing to do is contact the Church as soon as you are engaged so that we can help you right from the start!

Act Now to Save on Taxes—This year, instead of paying more in taxes, use your IRA to support your parish. If you are 70 ½ or older, you can roll over up to $100,000 from your IRA to a charity, any charity, including your parish here in the Emmaus Pastorate. You won’t be taxed on the transfer and it counts towards your IRA Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). Best of all, its easy. It is important to first of all contact your IRA administrator to see how you can roll over into tax savings while helping support our spiritual mission. There is a specific process and forms that need to be used and they can help you through those simple steps. Are you ready for

The Office of the Permanent Diaconate is currently accepting applications from married or single men between the ages of 32 and 58 for our next deacon formation class. Everyone who is discerning this vocation is invited to attend an information meeting on the Permanent Diaconate. Deacons and candidates will be present to witness how this vocation has called them and the process they undertook. Poinsettias—We will again need donations of poinsettias for decorating the church for Christmas. Please bring them to the church conference room the weekend of December 22. You can bring your own or put money in an envelope marked “Poinsettias” and put it in the collection. We will need the money by December 9. If donating money, please indicate the name(s) of the people you are donating the flower in memory of. Thank you for helping to decorate the church for the holidays.

If you or someone you know is in need of this ministry, please call the church (563-928-7200) or Linda Williams (563-590-1524) and leave the person’s name and location and we will add them to the list. Please do not assume that we will know you need this ministry. It is better to be notified more than once than not at all. Thanks.

Christmas Baskets—A long-standing tradition at St. Mark is the Christmas baskets packed and delivered by Parish Life. This year, 46 baskets will be packed. Donations of Christmas candy or goodies that are individually wrapped, individual snack packages or the Little Debbie Christmas cakes would be much appreciated. The meeting will be held in the Parish Center at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, December 9. A light supper will be served afterward. What a great Advent activity!

The Edgewood-Colesburg Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Chapter is always accepting the following items: ink cartridges, old cell phones, and iPads. The chapter sends these items into a recycling company and in return gets money to use for conferences. Instead of throwing away these items, please recycle and help out the FBLA Chapter. Thank you!

Guidelines for Facility Usage/Rentals for the Emmaus Pastorate—Parishioners and other community organizations are welcome and encouraged to make use of Emmaus Pastorate facilities, as long as they are supportive of and in keeping with our mission as a Catholic institution. Each parish provides its own rental agreements and fee schedule for usage, which are available by contacting the parish office. In addition to individual parish guidelines, the policy of the Pastorate is that nothing is scheduled opposite a regular worship or prayer event in the same parish. This means, for example, nothing is happening at the same time as Mass. Our primary reason for existence is the religious practices of our faith and, therefore, these always take precedent over any other event, dinner, anniversary or outside event. This policy will begin with the new liturgical year, Sunday, Advent I, 2019. Thanks in advance for respecting this high priority.
