Covid-Safe CONFESSIONS We are adding a few extra times for Confession that will take place in the Activity Center entrance. We will have you line up in your cars in front of the Activity Center and when it is your turn, park in front of the entrance awning, step in the open door, and Fr. Ryan or I will be sitting inside the inner door with a screen. This way you can have no contact confession and there will be plenty of fresh air.

The Family Fully Alive . . . DECEMBER 20, 2020 LK 1:26-38

The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of

Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a

man named Joseph, of the house of David,

and the virgin’s name was Mary.

And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The

Lord is with you.”

But she was greatly troubled at what was said

and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.

Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary,

for you have found favor with God. “Behold, you

will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you

shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be

called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will

give him the throne of David his father, and he will

rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his

kingdom there will be no end.”

But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I

have no relations with a man?”

And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit

will come upon you, and the power of the Most High

will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born

will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold,

Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in

her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who

was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for

God.”

Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.

May it be done to me according to your word.”

Then the angel departed from her.

Reflection I loved teaching this scripture reading to third grade religious education classes. I would read it aloud once, then ask them to (silently) show me “emoji faces” as I slowly read it again, trying not to laugh as the impact of the reading hit them. “The angel Gabriel was sent from God” (WHAT?! Big surprised faces), and so on. There would be other “surprised” and “worried” emoji faces, but my favorite was when I would read, “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.” The students would nearly bring me to tears as they smiled big and lifted their hands, waving them in joy. They got it.

Although I intended this Gospel to lead a discussion of Mary’s obedience to God, invariably the students would want to talk about angels. ‘Out there’ in the secular culture there are many misconceptions about what/who angels are. I often had to explain that we do not become angels when we die. Fr. Joe Krupp put it very well in a Faith Magazine article:

“ As humans, you and I are totally different creatures than angels. Probably the most distinctive difference between us and angels is that we are body/soul unities, whereas angels are pure spirit. If we make it to heaven, we will join the angels there, but we will join them as humans.”

The fact that we each have a Guardian Angel (Matthew 18:10, Hebrews 1:14, Exodus 23:20-21, and others), intrigues children –and adults! In scripture some angels serve as messengers from God, protectors of God’s people, and others are perpetually worshiping God. The caricatures we see of them (fat, naked, with bows and arrows) is unfortunate, as they are mighty creatures that deserve our respect. -MMF

Scripture Alive So, how many angels are there? Is there more than one type? What is a “Heavenly Host’? For an easy to read article, go to catholicexchange.com/meet-the-heavenly-host and be better prepared to answer these questions!

Dear Parish family, Advent, 2020

I hope you are having a blessed Advent season. I’m writing to share some new developments since my

last letter.

Christmas Mass Schedule

This year, because of limited seating, it is necessary to sign up for the Masses on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

This can be done by going to our website and clicking on “Reserve a seat for Christmas Mass”. You will need to print

the “receipt” to bring with you to Mass. Alternatively; you can call the parish office. No reservations are required for

the parking lot Masses.

Praises for our Giving Tree

Our St. John Giving Tree for area families in need was managed online this year, with great success. All “tags” were

quickly claimed from the website. The generosity of our parishioners and volunteers is inspiring, and I am grateful.

We appreciate you!

More than 30 percent of all charitable donations are made in the month of December, and many of us make year-end

contributions. The parish offices are open to receive any gifts (financial, fruitcakes, or other) Monday- Friday,

8:30am – 4:30 pm, through December 30th. Donating online is available right up until the “ball drops,” at 11:59

p.m. on December 31st. (Offices are closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.)

Special Tax Breaks – this year only.

As part of the response to the coronavirus, Congress made temporary changes to the tax code to serve as incentives to

charitable giving in 2020. Make sure to speak with a financial advisor and find out how you can save money on taxes

while benefitting St. John. Thank you!

Also New this Year

Along that line, I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you about our new system for recurring online giving

(sometimes referred to as e-tithing). If you are not currently using the online giving platform, it is safe, convenient

and user friendly. On our website, www.stjohnfenton.org, click the “donate” tab. If you are already a recurring online

giver, we want to thank you for your continued support of our parish community! We also want to let you know

that the following instructions are especially important to transition your automatic contributions into the new

system. The process will take less than 10 minutes, and we are hoping to complete these transition processes by the

end of the calendar year. We appreciate your assistance and patience in this effort.

Part One: Setting up a new recurring gift using Pushpay. Click the first link to set up your new automatic

gift using Pushpay. The recurring gift option should already be selected and you can simply set up your automat-

ic gift. After you set up your recurring gift, you will be prompted to complete the setup of your new account!

Part Two: Cancel scheduled gifts in VANCO Click the second link and log into VANCO to cancel any cur-

rent recurring gifts on the old platform.

Also of Note: This year extra effort has gone into making our campus a place where those outside of our parish can

also celebrate the coming of Jesus. Come by and see for yourself!

May God bless you and yours this Christmas season,

Fr. Robert

Today is the 4th Week of Advent, can you believe it?

We have only one more week before we celebrate the

Birth of Jesus, but are we ready for Him? Have we

made room for Him in our lives? Have we let go of

everything that added unnecessary clutter to our lives,

whether it be grudges, prejudices, pride, popularity?

The list is endless. The cure for all of us is the

Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Jesus even helps us get ready for His coming!

Here is a Prayer from Thomas Merton that I would

like to share with you

Shoot of Jesse, our roots go back to that garden in

Eden, to the paradise sold for an apple. (Food for

thought)

The birth of your Son has reopened the gates of

heaven and rained down blessings on our parched

souls.

As we relish the new light of the sun which nurtures

our own "gardens" on earth, let us develop into real

people who talk not about love but who actually

practice the love of God (and through him, love for

their neighbors) with a radiant peace. Let us flower in

the place you have given us.

Amen

Merry Christmas to all of you.

May you receive " Joy and Peace" from Jesus our

Newborn King!

Why Consider Spiritual Direction?

Meeting one on one with a trained Spiritual Director can help strengthen and encourage you as you learn to hear God’s voice and become aware of His love and grace in your life.

Spiritual direction often brings insights we sometimes do not realize on our own, bringing us into a closer relationship with the Lord.

Those who want to deepen their relationship with the Lord are welcome to meet with one of our Spiritual Direction Team members:

Marie Drewek [email protected] “I am a parishioner at St. John the Evangelist parish. My background includes a Master of Divinity degree from St. John’s Provincial Seminary, Plymouth, MI, the year the seminary moved into Detroit. In 1999, I received a Master of Science Nursing degree with a specialty in oncology from Loyola University-Chicago. In December, 2019, I completed the requirements at St. Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt, MI to be commissioned as a spiritual director in the Diocese of Lansing.

Having a spiritual director has, for me, been an essential part of my faith journey. Meeting with a trained spiritual director at regular intervals over many decades has drawn me into a deeper and more personal relationship with the Lord of my life.“

Linda Blondin [email protected] “Recently, I along with my husband Deacon Larry joined the community of St. John’s. I’ve always enjoyed listening to people and as my relationship with God deepened, I found myself listening to others in a new way. Becoming attentive to where the Lord was present in people’s lives, I enjoyed sharing my perceptions with them. Gradually, I developed a desire to further accompany others on their path of growing in intimacy with God. As a result, I entered into formation and completed certification as a Spiritual Director at the Institute for Spiritual Direction at the St. Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt MI. graduating in 2017. I am grateful for the opportunity to accompany others in exploring and continuing to develop their relationship with the Lord.”

Marie Clements [email protected] “In October 2020 I graduated from The Cenacle of Our Lady of Divine Providence School of Spiritual Direction (Clearwater, FL) associated with the Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio.

Having had spiritual direction for many years, I felt called to “pay it forward”. Through the process of spiritual direction and praying with scripture, my life has been transformed, helping me to discern and hear God’s voice, feel His love and experience His grace and healing.

My husband Dan and I have been married for over 39 years and are active members of St. John’s parish, and after retiring from my career in dental hygiene, I am excited about my new mission as a spiritual director.“

Nora Francis [email protected]

“I am currently studying at the Institute for Spiritual Direction in the St. Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt and will graduate in December, 2021. I was a pharmacist for about 40 years and loved serving and helping people in that capacity. I have a strong faith life and am an active parishioner of St. John’s. Assisting those that are interested in having a closer relationship with God, I look forward to meeting with people as a spiritual companion on their journey to a stronger faith life.”

Please call the parish office @ 810-629-2251 or email

one of us directly. Virtual appointments (FaceTime,

Zoom) are available as well.

Testimony

“This has been an amazing journey for my spiritual growth. It has enhanced my prayer life and my personal relationship with Christ. I have been guided on praying with God’s graces and believe, His grace is sufficient for us!”— a parishioner

Vocation Views Mary was called to be open to the extraordinary. What do you need to say “let it be” in response to God’s call to you? Trust that the Lord is with you and will guide you always.

Stewardship In the first reading, God promises King David that his house and his kingdom will endure forever. It is through Mary’s “Yes” - “I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say.” - that the promise finds fulfillment.
