Advent Book Study

Over the four weeks of Advent, I will be highlighting some of my favorite parts of our Advent book study on Jesus and the Jewish

Roots of Mary. There are so many aspects of the first two chapters that I thought were very enlightening. Dr. Pitre begins the book

discussing his own journey of faith, particularly his encounter with the popular protestant claims that Catholics “worship” Mary, are

idolatrous, and that our very understanding of the Blessed Mother is simply unscriptural. Dr. Pitre mentioned that while he knew

his Catholic faith pretty well, he simply didn’t know how to respond to many of these claims. That is, until he found himself at Notre

Dame studying for his PhD in Christianity and Judaism in Antiquity.

While it would be difficult for me to highlight all my favorite ideas highlighted in these first two chapters, perhaps one of my

favorite concepts he discusses is the concept of typology. He says, “The key to understanding what the Bible teaches about Mary can

be found in what is called typology: the study of Old Testament prefigurations (or ‘types’) and their New Testament fulfillments”

(Pg. 10). For example, Mary can be found in the prefigurement of the “Queen Mother” of the Old Testament. The queen mother was

second only to the king himself. She was honored with a royal throne and functioned as the supreme royal intercessor with the king

(2 Kings 1-2; Psalm 45). This is only one of many areas where typology can be used in the study of Mary.

Chapter 2 revolves around the concept of Mary as the “New Eve.” He begins this chapter by visiting the Garden of Eden, pri-

marily focusing on the person of Eve. Dr. Pitre illuminates areas of typology between Eve and Mary. For example, Eve invites Adam

to commit the first sin. Mary invites Jesus to perform his first sign (Wedding at Cana), Eve is the mother of the “offspring” who

conquers the “serpent.” Mary is the “woman” whose “offspring” conquers the Devil. In light of such parallels, there is good reason to

conclude that in the Gospel of John, the mother of Jesus is no ordinary woman!

Next week, I’ll highlight my favorite aspects of chapters 3 & 4. Please join us for a live discussion of these two chapters this

Thursday, Dec. 5, at 7 PM in the St. Cecilia Commons.

The annual St. Cecilia Giving Tree program has begun! Select an ornament(s) from the tree and purchase gifts for those who are in need this Christmas. You may return your gift purchases unwrapped or placed in a gift bag by the St. Joseph altar before

or after the weekend Masses. All gift cards should be returned to the col-lection box located under the tree with the tag attached or in an envelope provided for the organization. We thank you for not returning gifts or gift cards to the church during the week. Please have all gifts to the church by noon, Sunday, December 8. Your donations are greatly appreciated by these organizations who work to bring everyday necessities and Christmas gifts to the individuals and families they serve!

The people of St. Cecilia are most generous to the parish especially during the Christmas Season. Your special Christmas offering helps us meet our bud-geted expenses for this beautiful church and is greatly appreciated. You can make your special gifts online as well as your regular offertory giving. Or you can text your gift at (513) 434-3577. For more information, visit the St. Cecilia website (www.stceciliacincinnati.org) and click on the Online Giving logo.

This year the Feast of the Immaculate Conception is moved to December 9 and is not a holy day of obligation. However, there will be a special Mass to celebrate this feast at St. Cecilia at 7 PM on that day —Monday, Dec. 9.

1 | FEAST OF ST. CECILIA RECEPTION. I want to thank the St. Cecilia Pastoral Council for the lovely reception they arranged after the 10 AM Mass at St. Cecilia to celebrate the patroness of the parish.

2 | KNIGHTHOOD. The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepul-chre of Jerusalem is a Roman Catholic order of knighthood under the protection of the Holy See. The Pope is sovereign of the order. The order creates Ladies as well as Knights, with the primary mis-sion to “support the Christian presence in the Holy Land.” The order today is estimated to have some 30,000 knights and ladies in 60 lieutenancies around the world. Savio and Anita Soares have been a part of the North Eastern Lieutenancy since 2010. This year they were promoted to Lady and Knight Commanders because of their years of charity and service to the order. Congrat-ulations and thank-you to you both!

3 | CONGRATULATIONS! Mary VonLehman and Michael Spigner celebrated the Sacrament of Matrimony on Saturday, Nov. 16, at St. Cecilia.

4 | BACK IN TOWN. Former St. Cecilia parishioners Jacquie and Luc Sicotte were back in Cincinnati a couple of weekends ago to attend a wedding. They came to Mass at St. Cecilia the following Monday morning and had breakfast with me and Larry Misleh at Larry’s diner. They gave me a copy of the bulletin from St. Gabriel, The Archangel, their new parish in McKinney, Texas saying, “yours is still the best we have seen!”

5-6 | WELCOME, CHILDREN OF GOD. Welcome, Evelyn Nicole Olson, daughter of Mackenzie and Chase and Rory Ann Fitzpatrick, daughter of Amanda and Brian. Rory Ann is being held by Deacon Michael Huffman from St. Margaret of York who is a friend of the family and who concelebrated with Dea-con Nathan Beiersdorfer. Both girls were baptized on Nov. 1 at St. Cecilia.

7 | CONFIRMATION. Kayla Brotherton (center) was con-firmed on Saturday, Nov. 16, at St. Cecilia.

Wisdom of the Fathers Free will is the problem – and the solution.

To pagans who blame everything on “ fate,” Tatian answers that our miseries are our own fault. Our own free will brought evil into the world – but our own free will can reject evil

“Why should I admit that we’re born by “Fate,” when I see such managers of “fate” as the pagan gods?

How can you be ”fated” to be sleepless from greed? Why are you “fated” to grasp at everything, and die often? Die to the world, rejecting the madness in it. Live to God, and by under-standing him set aside your old nature.

We were not created to die; we die through our own fault. Our free will has destroyed us. We who were free have become slaves; we have been sold by sin. Nothing evil has been created by God. We ourselves have brought about wickedness – but we can also reject it.” - Tatian, Address to the Greeks, 11

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER…Do material things have a strong hold over me? Do I always want more than I can reasonably use?

CLOSING PRAYERLord, cast out every evil imagination from me, and every impure thought and base desire, all envy, vanity, hypocrisy, lying, deceit, anger, blasphemy, and every motion of the flesh and spirit that is not in accordance with your holy will.

Catholicism 101: The RCIA ExperiencePlease consider joining us for this week’s Catholicism 101 lesson on Baptism & Confirmation. (Dec. 4 at 7 PM in the Commons)

This session will cover:• What is a sacrament, how do sacraments work, and how

can they shape our lives?• What happens when we receive a sacrament?• What profound changes take place within the soul of a

person at Baptism?• Why do Catholics baptize babies?• What’s the difference between Confirmation

and Baptism?

Questions for the week: What is the traditional definition of a sacrament as given in the Catechism of the Catholic Church? The sacraments are divided into three groups. Can you name the groups? What are some of the outward signs and symbols used in Baptism, and what do they represent? What are the spiritual realities (or effects) of baptism? What do the terms form and matter mean in regard to the sacraments? What is the form and matter of baptism?

Meet Your Candidates & CatechumensELIZABETH MCKINNEYFavorite bible verse: Do not conform yourself to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. – Romans 12:2Favorite Saint: St. Mary Magdalene

Why do you want to become Catholic? I’ve been Catholic all my life but moved so often that I was never confirmed. The one thing I always recaptured, at every stage of my life, was hope, answers, and overwhelming peace in my Catholic faith. God made it blatantly clear that this was the year I was to be confirmed.

Volunteer OpportunitiesSaint Margaret Hall, located at 1960 Madison Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45206, has some volunteer opportunities for those who are interested in Pastoral Care — four Eucharistic ministers for Communion to the residents and visiting with them, helping in activities, visiting someone who has few or no visitors, helping in the gift shop, serving the residents, mending and sewing, putting tags on clothes for new residents, or on Christmas gift clothing, helping at parties, sitting with the dying who may not have fam-ily, and the list goes on and on! When you share simple talents and skills with others, you make their day as well as your own.

There are other areas that can use helpers — activity dept., shop gift sales, reading to a non-sighted person, playing simple games one-on-one.

The volunteer office is open usually Tuesday thru Sunday. Please call 513-751-5880, ext. 906, and leave a message or make an appointment for your orientation to the facility and simple rules and regulations. For the safety of the residents, they do back-ground checks on all staff and volunteers. It also is a protection for you as a volunteer.

We are social beings and need to be with others. If you’re helping brighten someone’s day, it automatically brightens yours at the very same time. Please consider volunteering and St. Mar-garet Hall will remember you at monthly Mass, the daily prayers of the Sisters and of course the residents themselves pray for you. All of us are very grateful for your help.

Dominican Retreat for WomenThe Dominican Sisters of Peace are sponsoring a five-day prayerful service and reflection opportunity for single Cath-olic women between the ages of 18 to 45 who are discerning a possible call to religious life or lay ministry in the church. This experience is scheduled for January 4-8, 2020, in New Orleans, Louisiana and includes prayer, service, community, and fun!

Participants will live together in one of our small commu-nity houses and will be cooking a meal for several homeless families, rebuilding a house over several days, visiting a Peace Center, and more. We will have group prayer and reflection time on these service experiences to explore the connection between service and justice. You will have time also for individual reflec-tion and to journal your experiences.

Space is limited, so register now! Free room and board provided. Some travel funds to New Orleans are available on a need basis. Visit their website at oppeace.org/mission-im-mersion-weekend-january-4-8-2019/ to register or for more information contact contact Sr. Bea Tiboldi, OP by phone or text at 614.400.1275 or email at [email protected]

Saint Cecilia’s Fertility Support Group will be having a dinner and social event for couples on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 6 PM. If you or someone you know is struggling with infertil-

ity, recurrent miscarriages or considering adoption and would be interested in this group and/or get together, please contact Tricia at [email protected] for details.

Upcoming Angelico Project EventsTangled, the Movie – with Catholic Analysis on Friday, Jan. 10, at 7 PM. This is a free event. Presented by Joan Ratajczak at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center. The movie, Tangled, about the familiar fairy tale of Rapunzel, is actually an allegorical story of the Christian life. Whether it was intentional by the scriptwriters or not, this enjoyable film is loaded with symbolism to be discovered and

discussed. Come to hear an overview of Christian symbolism in fairy tales, see the movie, and share insights on the timeless truths of our faith featured in this fine film.

Training for anyone who would like to become an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at the 4PM, 8AM, or 10AM Masses will be held Monday, Dec. 2 at 6 PM, in the church. For details, contact Dave Rosselot at [email protected].

On the weekend of Dec. 7-8, there will be a blessing for all expectant mothers and for couples trying to conceive or adopt at all Masses. Mothers-to-be are invited to take a St. Gerard medal and prayer card after Mass—both will be placed by the Mary altar.

Join other members of the parish as we prepare our church for the Christmas season! This is a great way to get involved and meet fellow parishioners. Decorating will be-gin at 6 PM on Dec. 23. If you can only volunteer your time for a little bit, we would love your help!

Our annual CHRISTMAS DAY DINNER will be held from noon until 2 PM on Wednesday, Dec. 25, in the school cafeteria. The dinner is free of charge and open to all—we would love to see you there! Meal deliveries are avail-able by calling Peggy at 513-321-0650. All request for meal deliveries must be made by 5 PM on Friday, Dec. 20.

This dinner needs your help to be a success! Help us bring some Christmas joy into our Oakley community by providing a meal and companionship for those who have no where else to go on this special holiday. A total of 65 ten-pound hams will be needed and funds to put this meal on. Please help in any way you can. Monetary dona-tions can be dropped in the collection basket marked “Christmas Dinner” or mailed to the St. Cecilia rectory.

For any of the numerous volunteer opportunities available, please call Julie at 513-478-3575. This year we need more volunteers to help pick up food donations on Dec. 24; if anyone can help with this let me know. We will need people to cut the hams and prepare the fixings (especially Sunday, Dec. 22—the day hams are ask to be dropped off) set up the cafeteria, serve meals, wash dishes, prepare carry-outs, engage in hospitality, deliver meals and help with clean-up. With all of your help we can bring the spirit of Christmas to our community and show them the love of Jesus Christ.
