M A Y 1 7 , 2 0 2 0 Congratulations, Fr. Chris Komoroski

One of our regional parishioners, Chris Komoroski, was ordained a priest this weekend, on Saturday, May 16, at St. Peter in Chains Cathe-

dral. Thinking about Chris and his ordination day reminds me of my own. It was 16 years ago. Fr. Jacob’s ordination was two years ago.

Msgr. Lane’s day of ordination was over 53 years ago. For each of those anniversaries, a priest can say a Mass commemorating the day of

his ordination. Of course, this often makes me think joyously of the day I was ordained by Archbishop Pilarczyk. The cathedral was full as

eight men were ordained that day. I can remember Sara Schmid, now the music director at SM-SJ, singing in the cathedral choir.

Chris, of course will have had a different experience at the cathedral, as well as at his Mass of Thanksgiving. With COVID-19 there

will be no crowds of people at the cathedral or at St. Cecilia; nonetheless, something incredible will happen on the day of his ordination

and at his first Mass that will be the same as it was for me and every other new priest. Chris will now offer on behalf of the people of God

the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross. He will do that for us at St. Cecilia live-streamed on the day of his first Mass, and then daily to the

people for whom he will be sent to minister. It will be as great a day for the people of God as when any other priest is ordained, makes a

miracle happen through the power of the Holy Spirit in the Eucharist, and brings resurrection into the lives of people through the power

given to him to forgive sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

On behalf of the parishioners of St. Anthony, St. Cecilia, and St. Margaret-St. John Parishes, congratulations, Chris. Despite all the

hardships on the journey to priesthood, a battle has been won through your willingness to open yourself up to God’s grace that makes the

impossible possible. God bless you, Chris. Welcome to the Brotherhood of Priests, and know that you will remain in our region’s prayers. If

anyone would like to send a card, note or gift of congratulations, mail it to Fr. Chris Komoroski, 3600 Section Rd., Cincinnati, OH, 45237.

Amen? Amen!

Catholic Social Teaching: What is its History? This series presented by Monsignor Frank Lane and live streamed from St. Cecilia continues this Tuesday evening at 7 PM on the St. Cecilia YouTube channel as well as the next two Tuesday evenings, ending on June 2.

Monsignor will create a Scriptural context for the understanding of the responsibility of believers to worship God, look after each other and attend to the real needs of the people around them. We will move from Scripture into the experience of the Church in the early days and its expansion into a universal presence within the confines of the Old Roman Empire and, eventually, beyond. We will follow the Church into the experience of the rise of cities and reemergence of trade and mercantile life in the West. The series will conclude with an examina-tion of the emergence of Capitalism into the 16th Century and how ideas of social justice adapted to the newer challenges.

Another son of the region, Fr. Craig Best of St. Margaret-St. John Parish, was recently given a new assignment—as pastor to the parishes of Holy Trinity in Adams County and St. Mary Queen of Heaven in Peebles. Congratulations, Fr. Craig, on your new assignment.

1 | SPRING CLEAN-UP. For the second time this spring, parishioners of St. Anthony worked to freshen up their grounds. Pictured are some of the tasks that were undertaken last weekend. Special thanks to all that came and distanced themselves to get the work done.

2, 3 | DONUT SUNDAY. Despite the fact that we cannot gather to enjoy donuts together, many made their way to the drive-thru Donut Sunday at St. Cecilia. Over three hundred donuts and fifty pounds of Easter candy were consumed, courtesy of CVS’s poor Easter candy sales. Spe-cial thanks to the Young Adult Coordinator, Sarah Rose Bort, and her husband, John Paul, for coordinating the event.

4 | GOODBYE. During the restricted days of COVID-19, the seminari-ans from Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary were furloughed to differing parishes. We were blessed to have three seminarians throughout Holy Week and through Easter. One seminarian that came to us, Tony Sanitato, will not be staying with us this summer. He will be stationed in Wapakoneta for the summer. Special thanks to Tony for all his efforts making all the live-streamed Masses a reality. On behalf of all the parishes, we are grateful. We were blessed by his efforts.

5, 6, 7 | BLESSED VIRGIN MARY SHRINES. May is the month of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Church. To accentuate that fact, all three churches in the region decorated shrines in honor of our Blessed Mother. Thanks to all who contributed their efforts to making beautiful shrines.

8 | REST IN PEACE. Longtime parishioner of St. Cecilia Dominic Cipollone, 75, passed from this life. Dominic immigrated to Oakley from Naples, Italy, in 1969 with, and is survived by, his wife, Marie.

UDPATES: For those that have not heard, we will resume public Masses on Monday, May 25. While Masses will resume, the obligation to go to Mass continues to be dispensed. If you are not comfortable attend-ing Mass or if you do not feel well, we encourage you to go to Mass via live-streaming. Another option if you are well but prefer not to attend a weeknd Mass is to go to a daily Mass. Daily Masses, at both St. Cecil-ia and SMSJ, will resume, as will all devotions, such as daily Rosary, Stations of the Cross on Friday, and the Holy Hours at all the churches. If you are planning to attend Masses and devotions, we ask that you please wear a mask. Stay tuned for how we will handle the weekend Mass schedule in the region.

Unfortunately the regional Father’s Day Picnic and the annual Sum-mer Celebration held at SMSJ parish have been cancelled. The ownership of Stricker’s Grove Amusement Park said that they plan to be closed all of June. We hope to reschedule the SMSJ Summer Celebration for later in the fall.

CATHOLIC FAQS : THE A NGELUS A N D THE R EGI NA C A ELIIn many places, including Vatican City, bells are rung at 6 AM, Noon, and 6 PM to call the faithful to pray the Angelus. The call of the Angelus bells unites Catholics throughout the world in prayer.

The practice of praying the Angelus three times each day is believed to have started with Italian monks in the eleventh century

who ended their day by saying three Hail Marys. In subsequent years, many Church leaders encouraged their congregations to begin and end the day by saying three Hail Marys. Prayers began to be said at noon in remembrance of Christ’s Crucifixion at midday. The Angelus recalls the Annunciation and Mary’s fiat:

V. The Angel of the Lord declared to Mary: R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary, full of grace…. V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord: R. Be it done unto me according to Thy word. Hail Mary, full of grace…. V. And the Word was made Flesh: R. And dwelt among us. Hail Mary, full of grace…. V. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

During the Easter season, the Regina Caeli is prayed in place of the Angelus.

V. Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia. R. For He whom you did merit to bear, alleluia. V. Has risen, as He said, alleluia. R. Pray for us to God, alleluia. V. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia. R. For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia.

Let us pray: O God, who gave Joy to the world through the resurrection of Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, grant we beseech Thee, that through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, His Mother, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

“Pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:17-18

Our Lady of Fatima’s 5 Lessons for 2020May 13 was the feast day of Our Lady of Fatima. It celebrates the first of the apparitions of Mary to three Portuguese shepherd children in 1917. The Church learned valuable lessons from the Fatima apparitions that the world needs now ... more than ever.

Lesson 1: Fatima keeps demanding to be noticed. What happened in Fatima, Portugal, keeps asserting itself into the life of the Church. Pope John Paul II thanked Our Lady of Fatima for sparing him from assassination in 1981; the Church released the “Third Secret” of Fatima in 2000; Pope Francis proposed the Fatima visionaries of models for the whole Church in 2017; and St. Jacinta Marto died in lockdown during the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1920 — exactly 100 years before the Covid-19 pandemic began locking down our world. The truth is, God is outside of time, so when he allows heaven to break into our world, it is eternally relevant.

Lesson 2: Fidelity is greater than prosperity. Our Lady came to shepherd children who lived in worse circumstances than we can imagine. Saints Francisco and Jacinta Marto and Lucia do Santos lived without central air (or modern sanitation), without proper medical care (penicillin hadn’t been invented) and in economic uncertainty (and political instability).

But when Our Lady came to them, she didn’t give them any of those things. Instead, she asked for them to pray the rosary every day, properly, and “bear all the sufferings God sends you — in atonement of the sins that offend him and for the conversion of sinners.”

Lesson 3: War is an image (and consequence) of sin.On one terrible day in July, the shepherd children got a harsh lesson in the realities of life: Our Lady showed them what hell is like, and warned of a war if sinners don’t repent.

Damnation is the ultimate result of our opposition to God’s image —but we hear echoes of hell in all strife, including domestic violence and racial hatred.

Lesson 4: God longs for us.It is easy to get the wrong idea about Fatima. The children hear how God is “much offended” by us and wants to see “Penance! Penance! Penance!”

When a mother sees children disrespecting their father and destroying the things he gave them, she should say exactly what Our Lady of Fatima said to the world in 1917. Their behavior isn’t just disobedience, it’s a heartbreak-ing rejection of love.

Lesson 5: Family prayer can reshape the world. Children will not change the world by their policy advice, or peer pressure, or by the power of their own witness, however effective those might some-times be. They will change the world by the “three Cs” of Fatima: consoling God through prayer, converting sinners through sacrifice, and committing themselves to Jesus through Mary in the rosary.

In fact, the Fatima children have already reshaped the world this way. The prayer they added to the Rosary stopped the spread of communism, their example led generations of Catholics to offer things up for others, and they sparked a revolution of Marian consecration worldwide.

Novena to the Holy Spirit Begins ThursdayThis Thursday is the traditional “Ascension Thurs-day” or the Ascension of Our Lord. It occurs nine days before Pentecost and it marks the day to begin the novena to the Holy Spirit. This is actually when the first ‘novena’ began, as the apostles hud-dled in the upper room praying for nine days after the Ascension of Our Lord until the Holy Spirit descended upon them on the ninth day.

Novena booklets are available at the doors of Saint Cecilia church if you’d like to stop by and pick one up.

The feast of Pentecost, which will be celebrated May 30-31, is often called the birthday of the Church. Why? Because it was on this day, after the Holy Spirit had descend-ed on the apostles as tongues of fire, that the apostles began preaching Jesus’ message to oth-ers. To help celebrate this special feast, we invite you to wear red no matter where you may be. The red symbolizes love of the Holy Spirit that came down as tongues of fire upon the apostles on that special Pentecost nearly two thousand years ago.

Lay Studies at the SeminaryThe Holy Father calls us to be “missionary disciples” for the world. Mount St. Mary’s School of Theology, sponsored by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, helps lay Catholics prepare for this great task through theological coursework, spiritual growth and pastoral formation. Take a class for credit or audit, or work toward a Degree or Certificate. Daytime, weeknight and Saturday classes allow you to grow in wisdom while prepar-ing for new opportunities. Interviews by phone or Zoom are available now for fall semester classes. Locations include the main campus in Cincinnati and St. Christopher in Vandalia. Call 513-231-1200 for information or to set up a virtual meeting.
