Runners Information Pack 2014
Welcome Hello and welcome to the first ever Fare Challenge.
Please read this important information pack. And remember, this is the first time we’ve
done this event too, so, well, it’d just be easier if we all knew what was going on! Oh, before
we go any further, thanks for being part of this – we’ve done it all for you, so we hope you
have an incredible day! J
A little bit about us
The Fare Challenge is organised by local runners who have developed some stunning routes on the Hill of Fare near Banchory, Royal Deeside. For the last few years it has been our friends and fellow runners who we’ve shared these fabulous routes with. Now, after much encouragement from those who have run with us, we are pleased to launch this event as an open, friendly and welcoming day of running.
The routes you’ll be running
An off road 5k, off road 10k or an impressively challenging off road half marathon – whichever you’ve picked you’ll be introduced to some of Royal Deeside’s finest views and once you’ve taken part we are sure you’ll agree…. it’s A Fare Challenge!
Fun for all the family
Being runners ourselves, we are also aware that family and friends may want to come and watch you conquer the hill, so we’ve put on a number of attractions in the grounds of the Raemoir House Hotel that we hope they’ll enjoy.
An important message from us to you…
“Thank you!!” We want to say thanks for joining us for this inaugural event, thanks for believing in the event and thanks to all of our sponsors who, with you, have made this possible. We can’t wait to welcome you all to The Hill of Fare on August 24th.
Claudia, Emma, Gareth and David.
Getting to the start line Sure you’ve been training hard, but do you know where to come to on the day???
Directions
The Fare Challenge starts and finishes at the Raemoir House Hotel near Banchory. You can visit their website here: www.raemoir.com
The postcode for your satnav is AB31 4ED
A larger map can be found towards the back of this programme.
Important information about coming by car
Almost everyone will come by car or minibus so we’ve arranged a large car park in a field next to the hotel. However, it is crucial that you do not use the hotel’s main entrance. You cannot get to the car park from there and the hotel have asked us not to use this entrance. Instead, please use the entrance (clearly signposted) to the east of the main hotel drive. Please see the parking map towards the back of this programme.
Being dropped off
It is important that all cars, whether going into our car park or dropping someone off use the same entrance road and do not use the hotel’s main drive. Please follow the signs on the day.
So, just to be clear, please, please don’t use or try to use the hotel’s main entrance!
The car park
Our car park is a large field next to the hotel. You’ll be brought in at the top of the field and will leave at the bottom. We have done everything possible to reduce waiting times at the car park but strongly advise you to arrive early. We are also grateful for your patience at busier times of the day as you depart the site. Your safety will always be our priority as cars leave the car park to go home.
Your programme for the day What you need to know and do…
Registration Opens
You must register for your race on the day in the main marquee. Registration opens at 10.00am and we advise you to arrive in plenty of time to ensure you do not miss the start. At registration you’ll also find a bag-‐drop facility being operated by our charity partner, for which there will be a £2 charge with all of this money going to our charity partner, The ARCHIE Foundation.
Registration Closes
Our registration desks will close at 11.30 to allow everything to be ready for the races to start at noon. Please ensure you are registered well before 11.30 as we will not be able to guarantee your participation if you turn up after this time. If you are running in the Bibby Offshore 5K, you need to be heading to your start line by now.
Races begin
The races will all start at 12noon. Runners in the Teekay 10K will line up behind the KR Steel half marathon runners, so you’ll cross the line after 12 noon. But everyone is timed on a chip, so don’t worry about how long that takes! Your official time will be accurate. Families and friends might want to make use of the bouncy castle, segways, climbing wall, face painter etc from this time – or get some lunch! There is a £3 charge per person for an entertainment pass (not including segways) with all of this money going to our charity partner, The ARCHIE Foundation.
Event ends
Of course, you’ll probably be back at home by 5pm, but just in case you’re not it’s important you realise that this event ends at 5pm. If you are still on the course at this time you’ll no longer be a participant and will become a member of the public. Our first aid provision will no longer be available and our marshals will all go home. We’ll send a 4x4 around the courses to offer you a lift, but it is important you realise that the event will be over. You will not receive a medal or official time if you do not finish before 5pm.
Thanks to our headline sponsors We couldn’t do it without you!

Some other important things you should know…
Timing chips
All three of our races will be officially timed using a timing chip system, provided by Winning Times. The official race results will be posted on the website, hopefully on the Sunday evening but certainly by the Monday. Please review the information to the rear of this programme on how to correctly attach your timing chip.
Event Clips
When you register in the main marquee you’ll be given a race number and a set of event clips. These are yours to keep, and replace safety pins. They are specially designed for runners and mean you don’t need to pierce your running kit. They’re very easy to use, but you should review the instructions at the rear of this programme now (so you don’t look silly trying to figure it out on the day!!).
First Aid
First aid will be provided by the Red Cross. If you feel unwell before, during or after the event please seek assistance from their team. They will have a presence on the routes, a tent next to the main marquee and a 4x4 to move around the three courses. We strongly advise all participants to seek a doctor’s appointment and to have a check-‐up before taking part in the race.
New to trail running?
Running on trails is different from running on roads. Although the 5k has quite a long but gentle climb the 10K and the half marathon both start with quite a significant climb. When you’re trail running, remember that it’s OK to walk for a bit! Just keep to the left if you do walk and, more importantly, remember to run when the course levels out and starts to go down hill. Finally, you will be running on a hill, so the ground is constantly uneven, so be careful and vigilant throughout. But do remember to look up too – the views are incredible!
OK, a few more things you need to know… And you’ll really want to pay attention to the information on what signs to follow!
General route information
All three of our races finish at the Raemoir Hotel, but only the 10K and the half marathon start there. The 5K starts a short walk from the hotel at Cluny Chrichton Castle. However, all of the routes share some sections of path – so you need to know what signs you’re following! So, please see below:
The Bibby Offshore 5K
The 5K starts a short walk from the hotel at Cluny Chrichton Castle. 5K runners should follow directions and leave plenty of time to get to their start line – at least 20 minutes.
Once your race starts, you need to follow signs with a red line along the top. DO NOT FOLLOW any other signs during the race – or you will run much further than 5K. Your red-‐topped signs will always be on the right hand side of your course.
The Teekay 10K
You will start and finish in front of the hotel, but you need to queue up behind the half marathon runners at the start (signs will show you where).
Once your race starts, you need to follow signs with a blue line along the top. DO NOT FOLLOW any other signs during the race – or you will run much, much further than 10K! Your blue-‐topped signs will always be on the left hand side of your course.
The KR Steel half marathon
Half marathon runners will start and finish in front of the hotel. Please line up in your start zones as shown by the signs.
Once your race starts, you need to follow the signs that don’t have coloured tops. There is also quite a big clue in that your signs will say ‘MILES’ under the numbers rather than ‘KM’! Your signs will always be on the right hand side of the track.
The Bibby Offshore 5K
The Bibby Offshore 5k Route starts at the stunning Cluny Crichton Castle ruins, a short walk from the Raemoir House Hotel. The route takes you over a combination of good quality farm tracks and woodland tracks before finishing at the Hotel where all your supporters will be lining the finish area waiting to cheer you in.
The 5k route sees incredible views of Scolty Hill and Lower Royal Deeside as well as the castle and then the grand stand finish.
The route is shown here with a guide showing the ascent below.
The key thing you need to remember is that your start line is a short walk from the hotel. Please leave the hotel area at 11.30 to make sure you’re there in plenty of time. And remember to only follow signs with a red top!
The Teekay 10K
The Teekay 10k is an off road course starting and finishing in the beautiful grounds of the Raemoir House Hotel. The opening 3k will test your strength with a quick ascent but there is a great long descent back to the finish line, with just a small sting in the tail at the end!
You’ll enjoy spectacular views throughout but please note that you share the ascent with the half marathon runners – so don’t just follow the guy in front! You’ll also spend a little bit of time mixing with the 5K runners as you come down through the woods and back towards the hotel. Again, just follow your signs that will always be on your left with a blue top, and you won’t get lost, stuck in a loop or disqualified! Here’s a plan and an indication of the climb:
The KR Steel half marathon
The KR Steel Half Marathon is a challenging, off road, 13.1 miles starting and finishing in the fabulous grounds of the Raemoir House Hotel. The opening 3 miles will test your strength with a quick ascent to the highest point of the route, but the reward is in the views and the long descent back to the finish line. You will also enjoy incredible views of a hidden valley, not visible from any of the roads surrounding the Hill of Fare. At mile 9 you’ll come into the forest where we’ve built an entire new road! This 1-‐mile section through the woods was previously an (almost) impassable bog but thanks to you for signing up, and our partners at Mackintosh Plant Hire and Dunecht Estates, we’ve managed to transform this section of the route. Local residents and visitors alike will also be able to enjoy circular runs, cycles and walks all year round as a result of this work too.
It’s worth remembering that throughout this run you’ll have amazing views. From Lochnagar to Aberdeen Harbour, we will certainly not criticize you for slowing down from time to time to enjoy this exceptional route!
And a few other things you need to know…
Water stations
There is one water station on the 5K route, there are 2 on the 10K route and there are three on the half marathon route. Water is dispensed in small bottles with sports caps so you can run with them if you want to. However, please, please, please do not throw bottles into the woods or moors. There will be bins for bottles or you can drop them at the side of the course. Please think about our small team of volunteers who need to clean all three routes!
Emergency Procedure
With over 700 runners taking part on the day, it is crucial we can communicate with you in an easy and clear way. This will be done with three simple flag colours that will have the following meanings:
Green – everything is fine and going to plan. If there are any delays they’ll be short and you should be ready to start as planned.
Orange – There has been a problem or serious situation that has caused a delay. We’re dealing with it as quickly as we can. We know you are waiting but please still proceed to (or stay in) your starting zone. We are doing whatever is necessary to resolve the problem and you’ll be underway shortly. Please do not leave your start zone.
Red – There has been a catastrophic problem that means the race must be cancelled. This decision has not been taken lightly, but there has been no choice. Please make your way to the registration desks for more information.
There will be one flag at the start line of the 5K and one at the start line of the half marathon and 10K.
Parking – PLEASE READ!
We are delighted to welcome so many runners to this first event, but with so many attending it’s important you know where you are going when you arrive. Please DO NOT attempt to come up the hotel’s main entrance. If you are coming from Banchory, turn right at the top of Raemoir Road and then take the first left into the Estate. If you are coming from Aberdeen, You will need to turn into the Estate before the hotels’ entrance – but it will be clearly signposted. If you are coming from Torphins, go past the hotel entrance and then take the next left. Please follow the signs and the marshal’s instructions. Here is the parking plan:
Event Clips
You’ll be given event clips to use on the day, which you are free to keep after the race is finished. We hope you like these and agree they’re much better than safety pins! However, you’ll want to know how to use them – so here’s a guide.
Timing Chips
All our runners will be officially timed by Winning Time. They’ll give you a chip that you need to attach to your trainer as shown here. It’s important you get this right, so please take a minute to review this information.
And thanks to our associate sponsors
A number of companies have supported us in getting this inaugural event ‘up and running’, and we simply couldn’t have done it without their support. Whether that has been in-‐kind, in time, by giving advice, by providing funds for specific activities outwith the actual races or hosting/attending countless meetings. We’ve been overwhelmed by their generosity and thank them all most sincerely.

A final word about our charity
The ARCHIE Foundation is the official charity of the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital. But they do much more than just buy toys for children in hospital here in Aberdeen. The charity supports sick children wherever they are getting care right across the North of Scotland. That means they work in 20 different hospitals and units providing emergency assistance, specialist staff, advanced medical equipment, family support and, yes, lots of toys. They fund research, and even have 2 family friendly cafes designed to promote good children’s health messages – so some kids don’t get sick in the first place. From Dundee to Shetland the charity impacts on the healthcare of more than 100,000 sick children every year and is there to support whether a child has been injured in an accident, has been diagnosed with cancer or needs their help during a time of poor mental health. There are few, if any, charities that have such a direct or immediate affect on sick kids and their families when they really need it the most. We are proud to support them through The Fare Challenge and would urge you to consider either making a donation or perhaps raising just a few pounds to support them too. Every pound given makes a big difference, and you can sign up or donate here:
