    Council Corner

The Annual Congregational Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, November 13.

Lunch will be provided, following the 11:00 service, with the meeting beginning

immediately after lunch. Your presence and support are extremely important to this

congregation. Please plan to attend. We should never assume that our one vote

    doesn't matter.

At this meeting, we will vote on the budget for the year 2012. I encourage you to

think about your vision of how Epiphany can serve in spreading the Gospel to our

neighbors, strengthen us in our relationship with Christ, and demonstrate God's

love through Christ in our families, our congregation, and beyond the doors of our

church. Where do you fit in that vision? When we dedicate our selves, our time,

our gifts, and our love to Him, He will provide for us to accomplish His will.

The Nominating Committee is working to find candidates to serve 3 year terms on Church Council. Please

prayerfully consider serving if you are called. God has given each one of us a unique gift that is needed to

further the work of His Kingdom, and your gift may be just the one needed at this time.

May God bless us all as we work together to serve Him.

―Through the Church the Song Goes On‖

Please remember that Epiphany serves as the host site for the Associa-

tion of Lutheran Church Musicians (ALCM) hymn festival celebrating

ALCM’s 25th anniversary year. ALCM is engaged in the work of em-

powering people to join the song of the Church. "Through the Church

the Song Goes On" on November 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the nave. The fes-

tival features much participation from the congregation in each of the

hymns. There will be a chancel choir comprised of voices from our

choirs as well as those from Trinity Lutheran Church. Because of the

important role of the congregation in a hymn festival, we would hope

    for many folks to attend.

Plan on joining us on November 13 at 7:00 p.m. If you want to be a

part of the choir, this is a great opportunity to do so with very limited rehearsal commitment. In fact, every-

thing will be put together either during the regularly scheduled rehearsal on November 9 or just before the

    festival on the 13th.

ALCM’s goal is to ignite the Church with at least 25 experiences of the same Hymn Festival, to provide op-

portunity to share stories of ALCM's accomplishments, and to encourage financial support and partnership to

expand scholarship and mentoring programs for our youngest musicians. You can visit the ALCM website at

www.alcm.org for more information on ALCM. A free will offering will be collected with the proceeds to

benefit ALCM and the education of young musicians in the Church.

    Children’s Corner

The Singing Saints, Cherub Choir and Junior Handbells will meet on November

    2, 9 and 16 for rehearsal. Cherub Choir meets from 6:30 – 7:00 in room 104.

Singing Saints meet in the Music Room from 6:30 – 7:10. Junior Handbells

meet from 7:00 – 7:30 in the balcony. On November 30, Cherubs will meet at

the regular time; Singing Saints will meet from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30.

Please note that the Singing Saints have a special rehearsal on SATURDAY,

November 19 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. This will be an important rehearsal as we

are preparing for the Christmas Festival. If you have a 2nd-6th grader who is

interested in being a part of the Christmas Musical, please have them attend – even if they do not regularly

attend Singing Saints – we would love to have them join us!

The Singing Saints, the Junior Handbells and the Cherub Choir will all participate in services on November 20.

Worship Matters For Lutherans, worship matters. In fact, worship lies at the heart of how we

understand ourselves together. While some of the approaches to worship may

differ from one congregation to another, we hold certain things in common.

There is a basic pattern for worship among Lutherans. We gather. We encounter

God’s Word. We share a meal at the Lord’s table. And we are sent into the world.

But we do not think about worship so much in terms of what we do. Worship is

fundamentally about what God is doing and our response to God’s action.

Worship is an encounter with God, who saves us through the life, death and

    resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Think about it like this. God’s Spirit calls us together. God speaks to us through

readings from the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, through preaching,

prayer, and song. God feeds and nourishes us in a saving way. And God blesses us and sends us in mission to

    the world.

Taken together, the Word proclaimed and the sacraments -- both Holy Baptism and Holy Communion -- are

called the means of grace. We believe that Jesus Christ is present in these means through the power of the

Holy Spirit. Sometimes we describe worship as a “gathering around the means of grace.” This is a way of

saying that we trust that God is genuinely present with us in baptism, in preaching, and in sharing the bread

and wine of Holy Communion. In that sense, Lutherans believe that God’s

presence permeates all of Christian worship.

The cross is the central symbol that marks our worship spaces and when

Lutherans worship, singing fills the air. The voices of all the people joined in

song and the participation of all the people in the worship is a witness to our

conviction that in worship we are being drawn in to God’s own saving story.

    Consecration Sunday, December 4

    A Courageous Consecration Sunday!

Some of my favorite Contemporary Christian artists are Toby Mac,

Natalie Grant, the bands Casting Crowns, Third Day, and Mercy Me. I

LOVE my “Funky Jesus” music, as my kids call it! I REALLY love that

they love it too and know many of the lyrics better than I do! Casting

Crowns has a new song out now called “Courageous.” This song is so

inspiring and, at the same time, has led me to take a good long look at

how I live my life. As the lyrics remind me, God created us, as Christians, to be courageous and lead the way

for others. We were not meant to stand on the sidelines and simply watch. We are to be warriors for Him.

To be quite honest, there are many days when I feel far from courageous. The

stress of our extremely weak economy and the current state of our world often

leaves me depressed and focused on just my own little world, trying to block out

everything else. Then, out of the blue, something (OK, the Holy Spirit) will shake

up my faith again; whether it’s the lyrics of a song, a homeless person standing on

a corner asking for money, or a simple but profound question from one of my

children. I am reminded that I am one of God’s Children. He has a purpose for

me and I was made to be COURAGEOUS! I need to stop my little pity party and

    step up to the plate.

As Pastor Phillip reminded us in his sermon on 10/16, WE are an offering; our

lives, our talents, our time, and yes, our money. Our currency may not have God’s

picture on it, but He does care what we do with our money (and it does STILL say

IN GOD WE TRUST). It should not be used for things that are displeasing to

Him. He does ask that we give a portion back to Him; what He first gave to us.

So what does giving back mean? It means using that money for His good. Using

His money to reach others and share His Word. Using His money to help others and thereby showing His

    love.

As we approach Consecration Sunday on December 4th, the Sunday that we designate to consecrate our

financial gifts to the Lord, I think “How on earth can I squeeze any more out of my budget?” And then the

song “Courageous” once again fills my head. I am reminded that Consecration Sunday is a time to reflect on

God’s grace, love and blessings. It is a time to reflect on how richly our congregation has been blessed and

how we as individuals have been blessed by our pastors, our congregation and our church as a whole. I ask

that you please spend time in prayer and seek God’s guidance this year for your financial commitment to

Epiphany Church. I invite you to be Courageous for Christ with me!

Because the past several years have been a financial challenge for our church as a whole, as well as many

individual members of our congregation, it is especially important that we celebrate any and all commitments

as signs of the Holy Spirit’s work in our midst! The Consecration Sunday Team has been hard at work to plan

and present the events in early December that will culminate in the dedication of our gifts to God’s work.

On December 4th, we will consecrate our financial commitments during the Sunday morning worship service.

We will be blessed with a special guest preacher, Retired Rev. Bill Van O’Linda. At 5:00 PM that same

evening we will continue the celebration of our commitments with our annual catered Consecration Sunday

dinner, by Chef Rob Hamlin followed by the grand illumination of our outside lighting.

Look for additional information about these events in the near future. I look forward to celebrating another

season of God’s abundant blessings with you and the courageousness of our church!

    Your Friend in Christ,

    Caryn Palmgren, Epiphany Stewardship Team

Parent/Teacher Conferences, “Stop-n-shop”, along with sweater

weather have kept us all busy this fall season. Our toddlers are

working on sharing and sitting in their chairs during snack time, and

have been exposed to many varieties of squash during play and snack

time. From my observations the spaghetti variety of squash appears to

be a favorite with the toddlers and twos.

Many finger plays and songs about turkeys can be heard while young students play bongo drums leading into

the season of Thanksgiving. Nursery School is quite lively during the holidays. If you don’t believe me,

come down the hall for a visit anytime.

Our older students are cooking apple pies and working on their sequencing skills as to what comes first, last,

and what happens in between. And by the way, their favorite apple is the “Granny Smith” apple.

Our four and five year old classes continue working on their pre-reading and reading skills, along with

learning about Native Americans today and in the past. We study and learn about selected customs, foods

and dress, why we have Thanksgiving, and the Pilgrim/Native American relationship back then.

All classes spend time learning about families and why we are thankful Personally, I am thankful for my

wonderful staff of teachers, the parents who send their children to our Nursery School, and especially the

beautiful little children who come in daily with smiles on their faces and laughter

in their hearts. I’m also thankful for all the volunteer “worker bees” who help our

    school in so many ways.

    Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving.

November is National Family Caregivers Month.

In addition to providing emotional and physical support, family caregivers often give

much more to those in their care. Nearly 40 percent of family caregivers reduce their

work hours or quit their jobs, plus spend an average of more than $5,500 of their own

money annually to help provide the care they give. Yet amazingly, unpaid family

caregivers provide 90 percent of the long-term care provided in the U.S. So this

November, be sure to remember and recognize the family caregivers you know. For

    COMMUNITY SERVICE MINISTRY

Aluminum Can Collection: Epiphany is collecting aluminum cans as a

fundraising effort for Hanover Habitat for Humanity. Recently, a collection bin

shaped like a small house has been placed beside the church garage (across from

the fellowship hall at the back of the church property). Everyone is encouraged to

bring in empty aluminum cans to help with this on-going effort. Thank You!

CARITAS-Thanks: Many thanks to everyone who donated items and/or volunteered their time and talent

the week Epiphany hosted a group of homeless single women with CARITAS. Our guests

and the CARITAS Ministry team greatly appreciate your efforts!

Thanksgiving Baskets: During the first three weeks of November, Epiphany will be

coordinating the collection of donated Thanksgiving meal items for needy families in our

community. All donated items will need to be brought to the church by Wednesday,

November 16th. More details are available at a display in the Commons.

Hull Street Meal: On Tuesday, November 29th, Epiphany will be

providing the evening meal for the Freedom House (Hull Street) Shelter. Sign-up sheets

and further details are posted on the Community Service Ministry bulletin board in the

    Commons.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR AN UPCOMING EVENT!

Giving Tree: Beginning Sunday, November 27th Epiphany’s Christmas Giving

Tree will be set up in the Commons. There will be paper ornaments on this tree

containing information about needy children in our community so that gifts may

be purchased for them. All gifts need to be brought to the church by noon on

    Sunday, December 11th.

    H.H.O.P.E.

    A Big Thank-You!

Thanks to the generosity of our congregation, H.H.O.P.E.’s fall drive was a great success,

with 1,041 pounds collected for Epiphany’s pantry. The Ministry Team also extends its

appreciation to those who made monetary donations.

    Season of Giving

The approaching holidays signal busy and exciting times at the H.H.O.P.E. pantry. In

November Thanksgiving bags will be distributed, and adults will have the opportunity to

receive a Bible. Christmas bags, scarves and hats made by Epiphany members, and children’s holiday books

will be offered to guests during December.

    H.H.O.P.E. Happenings

Money Matters With the recommendation of the church’s Finance Committee and the

approval of Council, Epiphany’s pantry now has two Dedicated

    Accounts.

H.H.O.P.E. Current Needs – an account to cover the costs of the

day-to-day operation of the pantry, and primarily for the H.H.O.P.E. Ministry Team’s purchase of

food and personal-care items to be distributed by H.H.O.P.E. in the immediate or near future

H.H.O.P.E. Development – an account to be used by the Congregation for the development of future

    H.H.O.P.E. ministries and/or facilities

The H.H.O.P.E. offering envelope has been updated to reflect this change, and donors to Epiphany’s pantry

now have the opportunity to direct their contributions. If you have questions, please contact a member of

    H.H.O.P.E.’s Ministry Team.

Love for God. Service to others.

    Saving Our History

Earlier this summer the Archives Team had a display in the Commons that asked everyone to help identify

people in pictures. The response was great! Over 90% of the people were identified. This is valuable infor-

mation as the Archives Team works to preserve our history. In the future there will be other pictures that will

    need people identification.

Also, Marvin Ulmer has generously given the Archives his papers from serving on various church committees.

The Archives Team is working on indexing his papers. A special thanks to Marvin for helping to preserve our

    history.

If any of you have papers, bulletins, Examiners, or any other documents, recordings, pictures, etc. and you are

willing to donate them to the Archives, please contact Barry Westin (282-8839), Dean Zellmer (253-9018) or

    John Hartmann (741-0276).

Below is an example of the historical information preserved in the Archives. This photo is a clipping from the

    Richmond Times-Dispatch, Saturday, August 29, 1992.
