The Passivhaus Trust is an independent, non-profit organisation that aims to promote the principles of Passivhaus as a highly effective way of reducing energy use and carbon emissions from buildings in the UK, as well as providing high standards of comfort and building health. Passivhaus standard buildings retain heat created within them as well as generating

Two inspiring timber buildings have been chosen as additional locations for TRADA Technology’s 2013 ‘Timber Frame Construction’ training course. Courses will still be run at TRADA’s headquarters near High Wycombe, but due to popular demand, venues in Scotland and Northern England will also host the event. Brockholes Visitor Centre, near Preston, home to a new nature reserve and winner of the Wood Awards 2011, along with the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, will play host to the day-long courses. The course takes place here on Wednesday October 16th. Delivered by members of the TRADA Technology frameCHECK team, who regularly attend sites to provide best practice advice, or assist in solving problems, the course is written to complement TRADA Technology’s fifth edition ‘Timber Frame Construction’ book. Mapei announce that they will be exhibiting at The UK Concrete Show 2013 on 27th and 28th February at the NEC, Birmingham. Febtank Super is a unique product which, when mixed with clean water, forms an extremely durable waterproof coating for concrete and masonry. NiUU is a high specification cubicle system from Kemmlit – developed by architects utilising Kemmlit’s renowned engineering capability to produce a system designed for washroom applications in the public, leisure, hotel and commercial sectors. Kemmlit in conjunction with architect Wolfram Wöhr have created an innovative cubicle system which offers many architectural inspired features including; clean vertical lines, a smooth surface, rebated doors with precise aluminium edges , innovative ‘floating effect’ leg construction, floor to ceiling option and an extensive selection of design options including various colourways, surfaces, trims and different system heights. NiUU cubicles are available with 30 mm or 38 mm thick melamine resin coated wooden constructed doors and walls. The elements are framed with a 3 mm thick ABS-edge trim and reinforced aluminium edge protectors.Trims, hinges and connection elements are made of anodised aluminium and have been especially developed for the washroom sector. A rod grip with integrated LED ‘occupied’ display is a notable feature. The cubicle system can be equipped with door handles or door knobs in combination with an indicator that incorporates an emergency release. In these challenging times, it is more important than ever for businesses to recruit and retain high quality staff. That means ensuring the workplace offers a productive and inspiring environment, with sustainable working practices. In order to better understand the role of office design, a panel of experts were recently brought together for a round table discussion, in partnership with Rockfon. The panel comprised architect Greg Jones, from Child Graddon Lewis; Ian Matthews, acoustician and director of Red Twin Ltd; Project Designer, Lucy Daynes of Peldon Rose Workplace Consultants; Liz Walker from Orangebox, office furniture specialists; Oliver Ridley of Overbury and James Pack of Pureti, both office fit-out and refurbishment specialists; and Andy Graham of Beacon Business Interiors. Rockfon’s Technical Manager, Tim Spencer, also attended.The panel were challenged to discuss some of the key factors

involved in creating the ideal working environment. The diverse panel included representatives from all elements of the specification chain, which generated much debate and informative discussion, with everyone sharing their experiences and knowledge. Standing at 310m, the Shard is Western Europe’s tallest building and certainly most iconic. Its extensive glazed aluminium framing, is coated with Class 2 Architectural Powder Coating, applied to the global Qualicoat Specification.Using 11,000 aluminium framed Glass Panels, the area of the glazed facade is 56,000 square metres, which equals the area of eight football pitches. With restricted access, it is vital that the powder coating to the Aluminium Profiles is robust and stands the test of time.For the majority of uses today, Polyester Powder Coating to Class 1 is adequate in the UK’s normal temperate zone and, with care, will offer a long and useful life. For more exposed conditions, such as the Shard, changing the formulation to an IPA Polyester, combined with higher quality pigments, both gloss retention and colour retention can be substantially improved for an even longer life. Known as Class 2, or ‘Super Durable’ Powders, these materials are often twice as expensive in powder form than Class 1. Once coated onto an Aluminium Profile, the difference in finished cost between the two is reduced, but life expectancy is greatly improved. Remmers have been awarded the prestigious FeRFA Large Project of the Year Award for the 600m2 flooring specification in the new purpose built, state of the art Audi car centre in Leicester. A designer showroom in need of designer flooring; this project involved the installation of unique vertical design with just one construction joint sweeping into the main showroom floor area. Specially coated aggregates to exact granule sizing and colour were applied and installed by Phoenix Specialist Flooring Contractors, to produce a decorative and contemporary resin finish. Registered Contractor Schemes Ensure Quality ControlThe deterioration and failure of building materials can cost thousands but for products that have been tried and tested for years, it is often a result of human error based on a lack of knowledge about materials. Gleaming black polished ceramic granite ventilated facades supplied by Shackerley have provided a stunning appearance and a high performance outer envelope for the new Hilton London Wembley Hotel, overlooking Wembley Stadium and Wembley Arena.

The Manser Practice delivered the luxury 361-bedroomed hotel as part of the wider Wembley Masterplan. The hotel’s monolithic polished black facades and flush glazing reflect the striking imagery of the surrounding buildings and provide a vivid contrast with the dramatic white concrete of the Arena.

The Manser Practice was one of the very first architectural practices in the UK to recognise the aesthetic and technical benefits of Shackerley’s ceramic granite ventilated facades a decade ago, opting to clad the exteriors of the £26million extension to the Hilton London Gatwick Airport with the Lancashire manufacturer’s large format ceramic granite panels back in 2002. Since then the practice has gone on to specify Shackerley’s Queen’s Award winning Sureclad ceramic granite ventilated cladding system to enhance and protect other standout buildings in the hotel, health and general commercial sectors, including this second luxury Hilton development. Over 3400m2 of polished black ceramic granite was supplied in a 1200 x 600mm format for the exterior hotel elevations. CE marking becomes a mandatory requirement in the UK for technical insulation products manufactured and sold in the EU from 1st July 2013. Under the Construction Products Regulation 2011 (CPR), it will become obligatory for manufacturers to apply CE marking to any of their products which are covered by a harmonised European standard (hEN) or European Technical Assessment (ETA). The recently agreed harmonised standard for technical insulation products includes a new European fire classification which includes an assessment for smoke development and the burning droplets associated with insulation materials in the event of fire. California-based Diamond Pet Foods new 28,000sqm manufacturing facility posed a number of lighting challenges. First, the company needed an ultra-energy-efficient system to reduce consumption and fully leverage the benefits of its solar system. EVALOC – short for Evaluating Low Carbon Communities – is a three and a half year Research Councils UK (RCUK) funded research project led the Low Carbon Building Group of the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development at Oxford Brookes University, with the Environmental Change Institute of University of Oxford. The research team is investigating six low carbon communities in terms of the impact, effectiveness and success of their changes in energy use on energy behaviours. Affordable Energy For Edgecote HouseUnfortunately, the priorities of early 18th century architecture did not include a requirement for energy conservation and the present owners in this age of enlightenment were looking to reduce their carbon footprint, take advantage of the government grants and subsidies available, and reduce reliance on their oil-fired heating by using an energy efficient alternative.

As a result isonergy were approached to design a system that would provide more affordable central heating and hot water, not only for Edgcote House itself but also for the five cottages in the grounds nearby. Preliminary thoughts were to use energy from the sun and stored in the ground of the huge grassed areas around the building. Solar energy stored in the ground is a very cost effective energy source, but a first site visit showed the even greater attraction of the lake fed by the River Cherwell that provides a landscape feature just 200 metres from the house.

Water is an even more reliable and constant conserver of solar energy than the earth, and a system was conceived involving 2700 metres of 40mm diameter pipe laid in loops across the lake and weighted to keep it at a depth below the surface. Filled with a biodegradable antifreeze solution that absorbs the heat held in the lake water, the pipe pattern circulates the warmed liquid to shore where it passes through a manifold, from here it is transferred to the utility room of the House in a larger 90mm flow and return pipe through a 120mm conduit.

It was at this stage period romance became wedded to renewable energy. Preliminary probes to establish the best position for the manifold disclosed the mouth of a forgotten secret passage, believed to link to a priest hole in Edgecote House. Investigations showed the passage to be in surprisingly good condition and able to carry the pipe up to the house, saving considerable excavation work and disturbance to the well- trimmed lawns that complement the vista over the lake. It is here that the most modern of technology takes over to turn residual energy from

the sun into heat suitable to provide spatial heat to the rooms and the energy required for hot water supply by means of heat pumps. A ground source heat pump exchanges the heat captured by the anti-freeze liquid from the water of the lake and transfers it to a refrigerant.The anti-freeze is cooled and return to the pipes in the lake to be recharged.

This low temperature refrigerant passes through the heat pump where an electrical compressor compresses the refrigerant gas and raises its temperature. The energy of the high temperature refrigerant is transferred to hot water system for heating. At Edgcote House, three of the new generation of super efficient Viessmann heat pumps, each with an output of 42kW, are employed for the purpose of providing heating and hot water. The first operates to fulfil the hot water requirements of the house and the five cottages, delivering sufficient energy to supply water at a temperature at around 70 degrees Centigrade to a highly insulated 1500 litre capacity hot water tank.

The other two pumps, in a master and slave configuration, provide hot water to the radiators of the central heating systems and they feed into a 1,000 litre hot water tank linked to a 1,500 litres buffer tank which promote efficiency of the system. Since the lake-sourced heat pumps work at an efficiency that delivers a heat output of well over four times the electrical energy put into the system to power the heat pumps, the first indications are for an extremely substantial saving of around 70% in fuel costs against the original oil-fired boiler. www.iso.co.uk

Hochiki Europe Raises The Standard Of Fire Detection At The Downs SchoolBased in Newbury, The Downs School & Sixth Form is a co-educational comprehensive school that serves the scattered rural community of the Berkshire Downs and beyond. Specialising in science and languages, it prides itself on creating an environment that has a positive impact on the learning, motivation and behaviour of its 1,150 students.The Downs School recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Shortly after the festivities its business manager, Lisa Hill, decided that the time was right to upgrade its fire detection infrastructure. She comments, ‘The School comprises three main buildings, which were built at different times, and this meant that we had three separate fire detection systems of different ages and types in place. In order to have a more

coordinated life safety infrastructure we needed a completely new solution that could meet our immediate and future needs.’Hill approached West Berkshire Education Authority, which in turn contacted one of its specialist suppliers, Reading based Westronics. Andrew Mundy, the company’s fire projects sales manager, explains, ‘Since establishing the business in 1969 we have specified, installed, serviced and maintained an extensive range of fire detection systems across

southern England and Wales. We carry out a lot of work in schools and colleges, so have significant experience of this type of environment.’After carrying out a comprehensive audit Mundy and his team recommended the installation of a BS 5839 part 1:2002 compliant category L2 analogue addressable fire detection system. An L2 system is designed for the protection of life and has automatic detectors installed in escape routes, rooms adjoining escape routes and high hazard rooms. Hochiki Europe is now Westronics’ preferred supplier. Asked why, Mundy responds, ‘The ability to use a standard Hochiki base unit offers us significant time and cost savings, which is in stark contrast to our experience with other manufacturers’ products. However, while fast and efficient installation is obviously a good thing, any benefits can quickly be negated if the products are not reliable. Fortunately, we get the best of both worlds with Hochiki.’

The Downs School’s addressable fire detection system is configured around Hochiki’s Enhanced Systems Protocol (ESP). Stuart Davies, the company’s marketing manager, comments, ‘ESP is a total communications solution for intelligent and integrated fire detection and offers the flexibility to accommodate simple addressable variants through to sophisticated integrated building management and safety systems.’The system comprises of three control panels – a six loop panel in the new Graham Taylor building, a four loop panel in the older building and a separate single loop panel in the craft, design and technology (CDT) area. These are complemented by a wide range of Hochiki devices including ALG-E optical smoke detectors, HCP-E call points, YBO-BSB base sounder beacons and ACA-E multi-heat sensors. Due to the age of the wiring, this was replaced in two out of the three buildings.In all common areas ALG-E optical smoke detectors have been installed which feature Hochiki’s unique High Performance Chamber Technology. This minimises the differences in sensitivity experienced in flaming and smouldering fires and helps to reduce the possibility of unwanted alarms at the School. ACA-E multi-heat sensors are sited in the science, cookery and CDT classrooms and were chosen specifically for their ability to alternate between day/night detection modes. The detectors are programmed to operate as heat sensors between 8.00am-6.00pm and as optical smoke sensors and heat sensors between 6.00pm-8.00am. The times are set via the control panel time clock and can be reset when necessary to account for changes of use or school holidays.Westronics also recommended that the system should operate with a five-minute delay. Hochiki sounder beacons are strategically placed so that when an initial alarm goes off only personnel in the administration offices and the facilities manager’s office are alerted. They then have time to go to the control panel, find out where the alarm has been activated and carry out an investigation. Mundy comments, ‘This is common practice in secondary schools as there are occasions when pupils find it amusing to deliberately activate the detectors. If this proves to be the case then the five minute window negates the need to carry out a full evacuation of the school and, for example, disrupt those taking exams.’ The system has worked perfectly since installation with no unwanted alarms reported. www.hochikieurope.com

Technal Windows Create Façade For Light-Filled College BuildingCasement windows from architectural aluminium systems specialist Technal have been specified to create an elegant and contemporary façade solution for a new campus building in south west France.The College of Bessières near Toulouse is situated on the outskirts of the city in a stunning woodland location. Show presenter Sian also runs her own design and building consultancy in Manchester, Moregeous Interior Design, and brings a wealth of knowledge of ‘all things property’ to the TV makeovers.Zone 1 of the Eastbourne kitchen-diner consists of two right-angled runs of new fitted cabinets, each around 2m long, and an island unit with gas hob and breakfast counter, which forms the interface with Zone 2, the dining room. For the work surfaces, Granite Transformations supplied its Nero Stella worktop material, which is made from natural Italian granite blended with polymer resin, for outstanding strength, flexibility and technical performance. Unlike solid granite slab, this material is slim and lightweight, just a quarter of an inch thick, and is designed to fit neatly over existing worktops or for bonding onto water-resistant construction board in new fitted kitchens.After preliminary measuring up on-site, Granite Transformations fabricates worktops based around full-size templates in their own workshops, eliminating the usual dust and debris, whilst ensuring precise dimensions.“The Nero Stella granite was effectively wrapped around a template, which can be useful in a kitchen where weight is an issue or where existing tops have to be worked

with,” records Sian in her Moregeous blog. “Everything [on the island unit] was measured to perfection so as not to overhang the radiator and lose heat, yet leave enough room for plates and to stop small hands reaching the range.”The black granite finish is picked up on the graphite-coloured doors of the American fridge-freezer unit, the dark metal cage handles of the cream kitchen cabinets, the built-in cooker hood and even the power sockets, which are specified in brushed chrome with dark inserts to keep the detailing theme consistent. Inset into one worktop is a traditional handmade Belfast sink, with a distinctive fluted front, characteristic Bonneville tap and double bowl format, that Sian says is perfect for a family kitchen.Grey stone floor tiles are laid in the kitchen in a random fashion, to give a rustic feel, while engineered oak flooring planks mark where the cooking area ends and the dining room begins. A roman blind instead of the usual roller style, in a sophisticated lalique lime fabric, adds a final luxurious touch.Having transformed a virtual ‘danger zone’, complete with holes in the floor, into a beautiful, elegant kitchen-diner, Sian’s classic interior design prompted a highly enthusiastic reaction from Stacey and Ben – ‘we absolutely love it’, ‘it’s even better than we imagined’ – during the final televised reveal. New Bona Finish Chosen To Restore Hall FloorFloor Restorers of Cheltenham, who specialise in the renovation of natural floors such as stone, marble and wood, have renovated the hardwood floor in the Princess Hall at Cheltenham Ladies’ College.

The floor was installed in 1952 and is constructed from Gurjun planks, a warm, pinkish brown species which was chosen to tone with the woodwork of the stage and balconies, and which is particularly silent to the tread.

Floor Restorers have carried out work at the renowned school premises before, but it was the first time this particular floor had been sanded back for 16 years. Consequently there was considerable surface damage

Floor Restorer’s Paul Biver consulted Bona’s Tony Peak over the most appropriate finish for the floor. Tony recommended new Bona Traffic HD would provide the most durable finish for a surface that was subject to constant traffic from pupils and the public attending a wide range of events and performances. Traffic HD is a new waterborne formulation from Bona that is 40% more hard wearing than classic Bona Traffic and with a VOC content that is 40% lower.

A key feature is its fast development time which means a floor can be put back in to use just 24 hours after application of the final coat. The magnificent organ, installed in 2006, is a prized feature of the Princess Hall. The College was very concerned to protect this visual and aurally inspiring instrument from possible sanding dust contamination. Floor Restorers were able to guarantee a completely dust free procedure by using a Bona DCS dust containment system.

This powerful vacuum is designed to be connected to Bona Belt and Edge sanding machines during sanding and removes and stores every speck of dust from the air and the machines, eliminating contamination from sanding dust as well as resulting in highly effective sanding and clean, safer working conditions for the team. Some parts of the floor were so heavily scratched that Paul had to start sanding with 24 grit abrasives. And, after working through to 100 grit quality, he used the Bona Scrad system to deliver a fine finish before applying a coat of Bona Prime Intense. Bona Prime Intense is designed to produce a rich colouration to the surface as well as providing increased build to help improve wear resistance. When the primer coat had dried Paul used Bona’s Scrad System again to deal with any grain raising and to produce a really fine, flat finish ready for the first of three coats of Bona Traffic HD.

The three coats were applied over a three day period with the Scrad System being used again to key the first two coats back when dry.

Surespan Provides Access Solution For Oil Industry When staff at National Oilwell Varco were unable to build tall manifold assemblies due to the restricted height of their Dunfermline factory, they turned to Surespan for help. Opening up the roof on a temporary basis was the solution.

Following consultations with Surespan, a 4000 x 4300mm double leaf roof hatch was manufactured which enabled an external crane to lift the manifold units in through the roof. The electrically operated hatch opens in an automated sequence, controlled by a small PLC and activated by the turn of a key. It was specially designed to open and stay open utilising strut locking to withstand agreed wind conditions.

When re-roofing, a major problem is often the removal of existing roof drains before installing new ones and connecting them inside the building to existing drain-pipes. Around 3,000 sq m of one of RigiSystems Creative Profiles were used to create a contemporary look and feel to the fourth span of Paddington Station’s roof. The fourth span was added in 1916 to Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s original three-span design, but it fell into disrepair in the 1990s. Contractor Morgan Sindall had the daunting task of creating the new structure on the Grade 1 listed building, serving up to 180,000 passengers a day, while keeping six platforms operational and watertight. The result is a triumph. The ‘saw tooth’ profile, in 1.2mm thickness steel, is plastisol coated on both sides in Goosewing Grey on the outside and Terracotta on the inside. Timoleon UFCH For Historic City ChurchSt. Andrew Undershaft, once a City of London landmark, but now completely dwarfed by the notorious ‘Gherkin’, is remarkable in several ways. Apart from the extraordinary name [the ‘Undershaft’ refers to a huge Maypole that reputedly towered over the building in the 16th Century], it is one of the very few City churches to survive both the Great Fire of 1666 and German bombing in the Second World War, only to be damaged by the IRA’s attentions in the 1990s.

It is now only occasionally used for services but is important to its administrator St. Helen’s Bishopsgate as a venue for meetings, Bible studies, Sunday School and evening functions. As a meeting place it was felt that greater comfort, in particular more effective central heating, had become essential and Forcia Ltd., a company with considerable experience in heritage projects, was appointed to undertake the work.

Underfloor heating was the obvious choice for the church to ensure even warmth throughout the huge 330 square metres of floor space in St. Andrew Undershaft and it was decided that use of the FoilBoard system developed and made by Timoleon Limited would make installation simple and swift and ensure that heat provision would be both reliable and effective.

Timoleon’s FoilBoard heating system is designed to be laid directly on any reasonably flat surface; ideal for St. Andrew Undershaft since the composition floor was in quite fair condition. The basis for the system is panels manufactured from carbon coated expanded insulation material containing extremely effective pre-bonded soft temper aluminium heat diffusers.

The panels include channels for the flexible 15mm polybutylene pipe which will circulate warm water and are held in place on the floor by conventional wooden battens. The expanded insulation material is easily cut to size where necessary and is also sufficiently flexible to accommodate minor undulations in the floor below.

Portakabin has handed over the first complete primary school in England to be built using modular construction. The scheme for Leeds City Council is also the first project to be constructed using the brand new Portakabin modular building system. The new primary school forms part of Carr Manor Community School which is now one of only two ‘through’ schools in Leeds, taking pupils from the age of 4 to 18. It will ultimately accommodate 210 children, helping to address the rapid growth in demand for primary provision in the area.

The £3m purpose-designed building was successfully delivered by Portakabin on time and on budget after only six months on site, in time for the start of the new academic year. It has a bright and contemporary design which reflects the architectural features of the adjacent secondary school, creating a distinctive campus feel for the site. Commenting on the scheme, Kevin Jones, Director and General Manager of Portakabin Sales, said, “The success of this project, its aesthetics and the quality of the finished building have taken modular construction to a new level and we believe it will help change perceptions about just what Portakabin building solutions can now achieve. Yorkon Awarded 1st Contract For Its Revolutionary New Off-Site Building SystemOff-site construction specialist, Yorkon, has been awarded the first contract to be built using its revolutionary new building system. The scheme for Kier Construction will provide three two-storey curriculum wings for a new secondary school in the village of Cambourne in Cambridgeshire.

The 7,000 sqm project for Cambridgeshire County Council is the first new secondary school to be constructed in the county for 30 years, and is Yorkon’s second scheme for Kier Construction. The project will accommodate 750 pupils aged 11 to 16, helping to meet the growing demand for secondary school places following an increase in housing provision and rising birth rates in the area that are significantly higher than national trends.

Designed by Frank Shaw Associates and due for completion early Summer 2013, the project is embracing modern methods of construction to deliver the new school. The use of off-site construction for the curriculum wings will help to reduce the programme time to just 35 weeks. A cross laminated timber structure will be used for the central core that accommodates the larger communal spaces such as the dining and sports halls and gym.

Commenting on the project, Simon Bates, Contracts Manager at Kier Construction, said “In order for the new building to be fully operational for the Council’s deadline next year, the time available for construction was reduced. Taking an off-site approach for the project was the ideal solution, which allowed us to reduce the programme. This project follows the success of our work with Yorkon on a major healthcare scheme in Colchester, where we were impressed with the speed and quality of their building system.”

The new Yorkon steel-framed building system will reduce the number of modules needed for the teaching areas by around half, to just 60 large 18m long units. This solution is more sustainable because it reduces the vehicle movements to site, there will be less cranage and less work on site. There will also be fewer internal columns to facilitate space planning.

Other improvements with the new building system include:Enhanced architectural detailing – the windows will have reveals and cills rather than openings that are flush with the face of the wallsThe use of the very latest open pour polyurethane insulation technology will deliver even better thermal performance and U values for lower running costs and reduced carbon emissions.

Foremans Helps Sutton Primary School Meet Increasing Demand For Places – In Just 6 WeeksDemographic changes and rising birth rates across the UK have resulted in a huge increase in the demand for primary school places. As a result, many schools are turning to modular construction as a solution to expand or redevelop primary teaching accommodation.

In Sutton, the Ofsted ‘outstanding’ Avenue Primary School needs to increase its capacity by around 30 per cent, from 682 to 892 pupils by 2016 to meet the growing demand for reception places. In order to accommodate an additional 88 pupils for the 2012/13 academic year in the first phase in

its expansion, and to provide interim classrooms for the next four years while other buildings on the site are refurbished and redeveloped, Foremans Relocatable Building Systems has supplied two teaching blocks at the school. Schöck Makes Thermally Efficient Balcony Retro-Fit A RealityThe debate over the environmental, sociological and financial pros and cons of demolishing or renovating older housing stock will undoubtedly continue. However, increasingly it appears renovation and refurbishment will remain the most significant contributors to progress in terms of energy efficiency and environmental preference.

Ever increasing energy prices, more and more stringent building regulations, and many other fast-changing forms of compliance, mean that the traditional pattern of refurbishing a building every forty to fifty years is outmoded. As a result, if anything close to ‘future-proofing’ is to be achieved, conventional renovation or refurbishment will not be enough – we must look towards ‘thermal renovation’.

There is now a huge variety of thermally efficient insulation solutions for old building renovation, and the overall effect of modern exterior insulation technologies, along with the appropriate render, can improve the character of even the most unremarkable of buildings. Add to this superior fenestration technology; floor and roofing insulation; plus the numerous modern technologies for cavity fill.

Until recently, buildings which have to be insulated from the inside – possibly listed, or where facades are an aesthetic feature – have used a substantial thickness of insulation to achieve effective thermal performance. As a result, the usable interior space was eroded. Now, with the development of significantly thinner insulating materials, this has changed beneficially for the building occupants. These and many other contributing products and technologies, have resulted in extremely thermally efficient buildings – to the point in many cases where they are practically sealed.

With many of these renovated and refurbished buildings, the retro-fitting of balconies, or the replacement of old thermally inefficient balconies, is in demand. Balconies aesthetically transform living space and exterior appearance, offer a practical benefit, and are an anticipated add-on for contemporary living accommodation, especially in city centres. The value of the property is immediately enhanced, and return on investment improved. However, thermally renovating a building without giving due consideration to the risk of thermal bridging at balcony connectivity points, is almost certainly going to create a serious problem – even if one didn’t exist before.

Low surface temperatures at the thermal bridges, combined with the relatively high air humidity resulting from the newly sealed building envelope, will result in condensation. This in turn can lead to structural integrity problems with absorbent materials. Worse still, it encourages mould growth, which has serious implications for building occupants and may cause them to develop certain medical conditions such as respiratory problems and dermatitis.

Two energy efficient solutions for balcony renovation and refurbishment are available from Schöck Ltd – the existing type KST and the new type R. Although the type KST thermal break

unit is designed for steel-to-steel applications, its modular design means the unit can be adapted to become an ’enabling’ thermal connection. The principal being that internally, steel elements are constructed in situ, allowing a steel connection to be built into a wall, or for a frame to be built between the existing floor joists. These respectively allow for supported and freely cantilevered balconies, with the KST module being mounted as the load-bearing thermal insulation element.

The latest development though is the new Schöck type R Isokorb®, which offers an extension to the existing range of KST solutions. It works with existing reinforced concrete floor slabs, and the installation principle is that drill holes are marked with a template in position on the face of the building. The holes are drilled into the concrete slab, adhesive injected and the type R load-bearing reinforcing rods slipped into position and anchored by means of the pre-injected adhesive. Structural screed is then poured into a special pocket between the product and the concrete slab to ensure a perfect contact between the two structural elements. Once both the mortar and the screed are cured, the structure is ready for the new balcony to be connected.

Residents can remain in the building during external renovation and there is no damage to internal finishes and decoration. Unlike new-build, product selection for renovation is subject to certain restrictions, and the solution will very much depend on the specific project requirements, the existing building and its structure, as well as the development of customised design proposals.

This new product is in response to the increasingly stringent energy performance standards affecting the German and European renovation market. It is estimated that currently around 85% of existing buildings have little or no insulation; but the 2012 German Energy Conservation Regulations, and future regulations, will require buildings to perform to “zero emission” standards at some point between 2020 and 2050. There is evidence from several CO2 reduction programmes since 1996, that by upgrading, an 80% cut in energy use has already been achieved, making the performance of the renovated homes at least as good as Germany’s demanding new build standards. In the UK, the argument is that existing stock upgrade is vital, because despite an ambitious new build programme, around 70% of all the homes that will exist in forty years time, have been built already. www.schoeck.co.uk

In delivering the £13 million mechanical and electrical (M&E) package for an architecturally stunning and award winning science laboratory in Cambridge, Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) were faced with the challenge of integrating sustainable initiatives and new technology for a building with high energy demands whilst maintaining architectural intent.

Winner of the prestigious 2012 Stirling Prize for Architecture and designed by architects Stanton Williams, The Sainsbury Laboratory is an 11,000m2 (meters squared) two-storey plant science research centre set in the University of Cambridge’s Botanic Garden.

Providing state-of-the-art facilities for world-leading scientists, mathematicians and chemists carrying out research into plant development, the building has achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, aided by a number of sustainable initiatives including 1,000 m2 of photovoltaic (PV) panels and photocell-controlled electric lighting, which results in daylight providing the only general lighting for most of the working hours. Other low environmental impact solutions included rainwater harvesting and water monitoring, designed to further increase energy efficiency.

For this highly serviced building, BBES ‘comprehensive M&E installation, completed for main contractor Kier, included the installation of fume cupboards, ventilation, chilled water, heating, BMS controls, air conditioning, lighting, power and security systems, as well as the PV panels and photocell-controlled electric lighting.

As one of the UK’s leading M&E contractors, BBES has a clear focus on sustainability – in relation to both the sustainable delivery of a scheme and creation of buildings that offer low environmental impact in operation.

To minimise the environmental impact through careful waste management and provide a more efficient and safer way of delivering the scheme, BBES utilised its Modular Systems + facility to deliver and install the plant room and 18 prefabricated risers. These risers contained modules for ductwork and pipework, which form a continuous ribbon around the L-shaped building.

Offsite building services assembly offers many desirable qualities. As well as helping to reduce hours on site, factory controlled assembly offers a much safer approach to construction. It also helps to significantly reduce waste whilst maximising quality control since all components can be fully tested before being delivered to site. Together, this approach enables BBES to offer projects a more sustainable approach to building services delivery.

Now complete, the Stirling Prize winning Sainsbury Laboratory will provide a high quality and unique working environment and is a fitting home for the world’s leading scientists. It further demonstrates BBES’ ability to deliver complex M&E schemes safely, efficiently and sustainably.

Largest Southampton Primary School for 25 Years OpensThe new Newlands Primary School in Southampton – the largest primary school to be built by Southampton City Council for over 25 years - has officially opened.

The two form entry, 420 pupil primary school, which is constructed on the site of the previous school, comprises a range of modern teaching areas with a clear focus on the use of both internal and external learning spaces.

Capita Symonds provided full multidisciplinary design services on the project including architecture, landscape architecture, cost management, structural engineering, mechanical and electrical, CDM co-ordination and BREEAM assessment.

The classrooms have all been designed to meet current education standards and enhanced by the amount of natural daylight that floods the building. There is also a large flexible hall and studio that links the two classroom wings with an inner courtyard area that provides direct access from the classrooms.

The sloped roofs lend themselves to the installation of Photovoltaic’s and a 35KW array has been installed on the south facing roofs.

The demolition of the existing school has now commenced and the land will be converted back to playing fields and a MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area) for school use.

ISG Unveils InterContinental London Westminster After Just 39 Weeks ISG has successfully completed a turnkey programme to deliver a new luxury hotel – the InterContinental London Westminster, in just 39-weeks on behalf of developer Supreme Hotels.

The £37 million project saw ISG work under an open book management contract to fast-track the 256 bedroom scheme and complete the hotel within the accelerated timeframe. ISG’s innovative approach involved putting in place multiple suppliers and subcontractors for each element of the build, reducing the risk of any delays to the extremely tight programme and ensuring turnkey project delivery with a full fixtures, fittings and equipment (FF&E) contract.

Involved in every aspect of the procurement process, ISG worked closely with its client to source the highest quality materials and products from across the globe as part of the FF&E package. Marble was imported from Italy and Spain, with furniture sourced from Italy, China and England and lighting from Germany.

Located close to the Houses of Parliament, InterContinental London Westminster is the first InterContinental Hotel to open in London for 36 years. The building was formerly the offices of the Government’s Treasury Solicitor and has now been converted to offer 256 en-suite guest bedrooms over six floors, including 44 suites.

ISG has created a substantial presidential suite on level six, along with an executive style club bar and lounge area on the first floor. Meanwhile, the ground floor has been extensively remodelled to accommodate a high specification lobby, lobby lounge, a winter garden area, contemporary restaurant and a sophisticated feature pub. The refurbishment also included the installation of seven new lifts, a feature helical staircase, back of

house offices and facilities, restaurant and bar kitchens and a range of conference and banqueting accommodation at basement level, along with a gym for hotel guests. The project also saw the construction of a new porte cochère to provide covered vehicular access along with the refurbishment of the building’s façade and windows, including some architecturally listed elements, as well as the construction of a large plant deck at roof level.

Peter Kilby, managing director of ISG’s Hotels division, commented: “Completing a project of this size and scope within such a short time scale required specialist expertise, a dynamic team and close co-operation across the delivery partners. The only way to achieve delivery of such a complex and demanding scheme was via a management contract that would enable all stakeholders to work in a collaborative and efficient manner towards the delivery timescale. With 36 different room layouts, a completely enclosed site and a requirement to remove all external scaffolding for two months during the Olympics and Paralympic Games, this was a scheme of considerable challenges. However, precision management, just-in-time site deliveries and a team of up to 700 construction professionals working on site at any one time, ensured that we were able to deliver to exacting five-star standards within our client’s deadline.”

For those of us involved in the building services sector, it feels as if we have been talking about the new Energy related Products (ErP) Directive for years. But now it is very much a reality, with the first Phase of its introduction in place(1).

The construction industry is no stranger to the adoption of legislation to help improve environmental performance, perhaps not surprising when you consider that almost half of the UK’s carbon emissions are attributable to buildings. Since October 2010, the new Building Regulations have required property developers to achieve a 25% reduction in carbon emissions on new buildings – just one example in a long line of legislative moves designed to ‘green’ our buildings.

Like the amends to the Building Regs, this new ErP legislation, mandatory from 1 January 2013, is part of the Kyoto Protocol obligation to increase the total share of renewable energy in the European Union (EU) to 20% by 2020, whilst increasing energy efficiency by 20%. In the longer term, the goal is to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050.

Heating, ventilating and air conditioning – and therefore the fans employed in those systems – are now firmly within the remit of the ErP legislation and have a role to play in meeting these ambitious targets. Just how significant that role could be is illustrated by the fact that the biggest consumer of electricity in the UK is motor driven systems, with approximately 22% of industrial motor energy usage being attributable to fans.

It is not just about applying this environmental thinking to new buildings. With an estimated 59% of the non-residential European building stock constructed before 1975(2), it is easy to see that refurbishment of existing buildings is equally important to our sustainability ambitions.

ErP Directive: a ‘lot’ of informationBy its very nature legislation has to be comprehensive to accommodate all eventualities and the ErP Directive is no exception, broken down into a series of ‘lots’, with the adoption of the lots prioritised based on their capacity to achieve the most significant reduction in energy consumption. I could not hope to cover all the intricacies of the Directive in this article but hopefully I can provide an outline of some of the major points and what specifiers of HVAC systems now need to be particularly aware of in light of the new legislation.

Starting with a note of reassurance: reputable fan manufacturers have been planning for the legislation for some time. At Elta Fans, for example, we have been working closely with alliance partners for more than two years, introducing the very latest developments in motors and impellers to ensure that we are in a position to offer the Best Available Technology (BAT) that meets all the requirements of the ErP Directive.

The most important point to make is that from 1 January, 2013, certain fans are no longer marketable within the EU. Minimum efficiency levels have been established for fans, including all the principal fan types between 125W and 500kW input power. The efficiency level required is dependent on the category into which the fan falls but includes axial flow, centrifugal backward curved with housing, centrifugal forward curved without housing, centrifugal forward curved, mixed flow and cross flow.

What to look forThe new legislation has brought with it some new additions to the lexicon used in fan technology. Two of the most significant are specific fan power (SFP) and fan motor efficiency grade (FMEG). SFP is used as a means of quantifying the energy efficiency of a fan. It is a measure of the electric power required to drive a fan relative to the amount of air the fan circulates. It is not a constant for a given fan but changes with both airflow rate and rises in fan pressure.

FMEG is based on a fan’s performance characteristics at a speed not higher than the maximum safe operating speed to obtain its optimum efficiency point. Both terms will increasingly be used in identifying the correct fan for a given application and must therefore be prominent in the fan specification details, not only in marketing literature and on websites but also in the product labeling and packaging for the fans themselves. It inevitably takes time for any new legislation to bed in but fan manufacturers need to ensure complete transparency in the information given to ensure that specifiers become familiar with the terminology and are able to select fans with complete confidence.

Further guidanceAs I alluded to earlier, given the necessary limitations of this article, it is impossible to cover all the bases.

Recognising the importance of the legislation to our business and to the businesses of our customers, we have developed a guide to the legislation, as well as a dedicated website (erpfans.co.uk), to answer many of the queries that we anticipate the market may have.

We would also be happy to talk to anybody with specific queries and pass on the knowledge we have gained, not only from the R&D required in introducing a wide range of new products to

meet the requirements of the Directive, but also from our discussions and involvement on various industry bodies that have been involved in its development. The focus on energy efficiency in the built environment is here to stay. Understanding how fans can help in this respect is currently under the spotlight – albeit one which, quite rightly, employs an energy saving light bulb.

Tremco illbruck specification manager Simon Foy on the difference between mock Tudor and authentic traditional construction.Green oak has become a re-popularised material for construction in recent years. Basically the idea is to combine traditional and modern methods of construction. It’s design sensitive, in the sense that it doesn’t look too modern. Big sections of green oak are linked by tenon joints in just the same way as they would have been two or three centuries ago. Obviously, various Building Regulations, including Air Leakage requirements, have to be met and modern materials, insulation, heating, electricity and so forth make the building very different to the one that would have been constructed 200 years ago.As the name suggests, green oak is timber cut from an oak tree and used before it gets the chance to be seasoned. It can take many years to dry out a large piece of oak.The unseasoned timber is easier to machine, cut to shape and use but within the first five years of life it will start to shrink and dry out. There will be cracks and twists. So you have to construct and use methods and designs to accommodate the fact that the building is going to move quite a bit in its first five years. It is this drying out that creates the heritage effect that makes each building look individual and gives it a unique character, despite the fact that it was originally machine cut into square slabs to very fine tolerances.It is very difficult to predict exactly how the seasoning will happen, though you typically have to allow for something like 5-10% shrinkage. It is even more difficult is predicting how the timber will twist.If you are trying to create something that isn’t perfect, that isn’t uniformly square and sharp, it may be exactly what you need. Each beam might be slightly different from the next one, but the end result is a something built by Tudor methods rather than a mock Tudor building.Sometimes green oak is used on fairly modern looking building, with the idea of helping the new unit fit in with other local properties. The end result is the equivalent of a hand built kitchen, or one that looks like it was hand built, if that makes sense.But when building movement and settling has to be taken into account, then it is vital to think about gap filling. One solution is to use an impregnated foam sealant like Compriband 600. This compressed foam tape is designed to expand and comes in various sizes to suit different gaps. An acrylic impregnated open cell material, it has a carrier foam that is impregnated with modified acrylic solution, compressed and left in a roll.

It is designed so that even if the gap it is filling expands from 5 mm to 10 mm it, will expand to provide an excellent seal. Equally it can shrink back to 5 mm if the gap contracts, maintaining that seal. So, if you’ve have a live building that’s floating and moving, the product’s going to go with it.The trick is to design the sub frames in such a way that the seal is obscured. You don’t want to see modern materials gaping out of a lovely historic looking building.Green oak may also be specified when an extension to an existing heritage building is being considered. In the New Forest we got involved with building an extension that featured green oak at a chapel far from the nearest town, for an order of nuns. The technique was also used at an open air museum near Goodwood featuring examples of ancient construction styles.

Another interesting project involved a heritage renovation in the Brighton where the project manager needed to satisfy the requirements of English Heritage. The Compriband 600 was hidden behind the lime mortar. The technique used was to position plywood formers in the joints and then render up to that. The formers were then slid out leaving a rebate. The tape went in the gap, sealing the two sides. Then a top coat of render went on top, right up to the frame to conceal the tape. It doesn’t matter if there is any cracking or shrinking because the tape seals the gap.Compriband 600 is a BBA certificated product which has been extensively tested and has a proven reputation across the UK as well as throughout Europe.www.tremco-illbruck.co.uk

Sika Ensures Weathertight Seal At Prestigious Waterside DevelopmentAt the £58 million Caspian Wharf waterside development in Bow, East London, five stunning new multi-storey apartment blocks will benefit from secure and durable weathertightness thanks to more than 8,000 linear metres of Universal Membran – the market leading waterproofing and sealing system from global building product manufacturer Sika.

Built by Berkeley Homes, Caspian Wharf comprises 552 high specification new homes and extensive commercial space on the banks of the Limehouse Cut Canal. Split across a series of six contemporary blocks, the project has been built to an extremely high specification with all products and systems chosen to enhance the buildings’ stylish aesthetics and stunning architecture.

For Phase Two of the Caspian Wharf development – the creation of five apartment blocks ranging from 6 to 12 storeys in height – high performance products and materials was once again a prerequisite. To provide an airtight and watertight seal around the building’s window frames, in line with Part L (Conservation of fuel and power) of the Building Regulations, nearly 8,825 linear metres of Sika Membran Universal, an advanced waterproofing and joint sealing system was specified.

Sika Membran Universal will help to prevent the loss of heated or cooled air from within the building to minimise wasted energy – ensuring the development meets stringent building standards for energy efficiency. Complementing the sealed double glazed windows, the system has also aided the building’s acoustic performance by contributing to the reduction of noise from outside.

The Sika Membran Universal System was specified and installed by specialist subcontractor BR Hodgson, appointed to deliver the complete facade package. Applied extensively across both buildings, the system was used to create a waterproof and airtight flexible seal between the aluminium/timber composite frames and

cement particle board. A versatile EPDM synthetic rubber membrane, Sika Membran Universal has been specifically designed to provide an efficient method of sealing any construction gaps in building facades. Solvent free, durable, UV and ozone resistant, as well as 100% waterproof, it can also be bonded to many building substrates. Sika Membran Universal regulates and controls the amount of moisture escaping from the inside of a building thus minimising the risk of interstitial condensation. Manufactured in 25m x 0.6mm rolls, Sika Universal Membran is available in a variety of widths ranging from 100mm to 1,400mm. On site it is simply cut to width and length and then fixed in place.

To ensure the membrane was securely fixed in place, BR Hodgson used the world renowned and unique Sikabond TF Plus N sealant to provide a secure and reliable bond. The single part polyurethane-based elastic adhesive eliminates the need for mechanical fixings to provide a seamless, aesthetically appealing finish to a variety of substrates. It also offers a largely primerless adhesion.

Elsewhere on the project a roofing system from Sika was supplied. Reinforcing the company’s position as a genuine roof to basement solution provider, Sika Sarnafil single ply roofing membrane was specified. Supplied in G410-EL Light Grey, approximately 900m2 of the multi-layer single ply membrane was installed across several roof areas by specialist roofing and waterproofing contractor Briggs Amasco. Lightweight and flexible, Sika Sarnafil G410-EL offers reliable long term performance and is certified by BBA to have a life expectancy in excess of 40 years for exposed applications. www.sikaconstruction.co.uk

Steadmans Delivers New Warehouse For National Haulage CompanySteadmans has supplied materials for a new warehouse at Robert Summers Transport in Leven, Fife. The national haulage company now benefits from a new 240 sq m storage space, thanks to Leven-based installer J B Developments. The building comprises 565 linear metres of Steadmans’ AS35 80mm insulated panels in ocean blue to the roof and walls. The company also supplied over 400 linear metres of purlins, as well as a host of cold rolled products, including flashings and galvanised gutters. A range of Steadmans structural material was also used on the project, including eaves beams, struts, ties and sag bars.

Jeremy Beaumont, owner of J B Developments, commented: “We first used Steadmans over 25 years ago and they’ve remained our preferred supplier ever since. We continue to work with them for the majority of jobs, as they’re able to provide us with all the products that our projects require and, most importantly, they deliver them when you need them. kalzip acoustic roof system souNds perfect

Kalzip’s standing seam system with a Class A [αw=0.95] sound absorption performance was specified for the roofs of Glasgow City Council’s impressive Emirates Arena which includes the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. Designed by architect 3DReid and built by Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd, the complex will be one of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games key facilities. Over 18,600 sqm of Kalzip aluminium sheets in lengths of up to 98 metres were required for this massive new multi centre sports complex. Kalzip’s approved Teamkal contractor also installed a similar quantity of fully perforated Kalzip liner sheets with Kalzip high density insulation acoustic boards to achieve a U-value of 0.25 W/m²K and, more importantly, the desired sound absorption and sound reduction levels required to satisfy the architect’s demanding acoustic criteria. The vast majority of Kalzip sheets were manufactured on-site at eaves level using a portable roll-former suspended from a crane. Klober Permo Air underlay has been used by self-builder Jacqui Wolfe in the construction of an oak frame home in Helsby Cheshire. The project will consist of several phases using materials from natural and sustainable sources and Passive House principles. The initial stages have comprised of an orangery, a Dutch barn garage and a studio and will be followed by the house, all with a backdrop provided by land owned by the National Trust. The Permo Air was used because it is 13% more breathable than any other underlay. It was also used in the middle of November and provided immediate waterproofing protection in a period of intensely bad weather. www.klober.co.uk

laNes eNGiNeers turN detective to solve m-way reGeNeratioN riddleLanes for Drains engineers have turned super sleuths to help progress a motorway construction project vital to major plans to regenerate a large part of Portsmouth. Innovative survey work was needed to allow Lanes’ client, Colas, to finalise plans for a new motorway junction required as part of a £130m regeneration. Lanes worked for three months to find and map the drainage system around the M275 motorway prior to the building of the junction. They scoured the land, through six feet high brambles, using metal detectors to track down more than 200 manholes. The work continued to the point where an up-to-date plan now exists, to within an accuracy of a few centimetres, showing a drainage system with 7,500 metres of pipework. All the manholes were plotted by hand on plan drawings. As each block of manholes was identified, they were surveyed using Lanes sophisticated remote-controlled Rovver robot cameras and cleaned using powerful jet vac tankers and recycling tankers. soNic’s ticket office for re-borN farriNGdoN statioNFor the supply and installation of the new Booking Office at at Farringdon Station in Clerkenwell the specialist services of Sonic Windows Ltd. of Bexhill in Sussex were called upon. There is a total of four windows, three ticket office windows facing directly onto the concourse and a fourth window only continuing line but round a 45º degree corner. Since the floor tiles and predominant colour scheme of the ticket hall is grey, the stainless steel used immediately above, below and framing the windows blends perfectly with the surroundings, while any hint of starkness is relieved by the use of oatmeal coloured panels leading up to the ceiling. The windows themselves are clear allowing undisturbed face-to-face communication between staff and passengers, but are of laminated 42mm bullet resistant glass granting utmost safety for staff and security for cash transactions. www.sonicwindows.co.uk

Timoleon’s Under-Deck Heating For The Barge ‘Actief’The Actief is a 98 foot, 78 ton Dutch Klipper Barge built in 1907. She continued her intended function of carrying bulk cargoes until 1976 when she was converted into a floating hotel carrying eleven passengers in style on Thames cruises. Now, after a brief spell of glory as a participant in the Queen’s Jubilee Pageant, she is entering a new phase of life as work nears completion to transform the Actief into a magnificent floating family home. Grovecourt, specialists in craft carpentry, luxury design and bespoke refurbishment, is undertaking the conversion in Battersea, but before detailed carpentry work could start, the matter of efficient heating had to settled. Clearly, with shipboard space at a premium, an ‘under-floor’ system that used no wall space was essential. With other considerations such as the ability to lay in odd corners, lack of mess during installation and the necessity of a system taking up minimal space, it was decided to use the LowBoard System developed and manufactured by Timoleon. LowBoard uses panels of high density wood that have a depth of only 13mm and can be laid on any reasonably flat surface. The panels have a layer of aluminium foil on the underside to ensure that heat is evenly spread over the whole surface and can be very simply sawn or cut to the required size. Once the panels are laid it is a simple matter to ‘walk’ the flexible 12mm polyethylene pipe from the roll into the pre-formed pattern on the panels. In the case of Actief, the LowBoard heating covered both decks. The lower deck, with four bedrooms [one ensuite], bathroom, two dressing rooms and a shower room required 425 metres of pipe split into six zones while the upper deck, with kitchen, dining room & lounge plus a separate office took a further 324 metres of pipe. The system provides a flow temperature of 55 degrees and a return temperature of 45 degrees, with the heat source provided by a diesel fired boiler.www.timoleon.co.uk

Selectaglaze On Display At Tate Liverpool

Tate Liverpool is the home of the national collection of modern and contemporary art in the North of England. Attracting more than 12 million visitors since opening in 1988, Tate Liverpool is one of the most visited UK galleries outside London. The gallery is housed within a five storey Grade I Listed warehouse, converted by architect James Stirling, in the historic Albert Dock on the city’s World Heritage waterfront.

Tate Liverpool’s commitment to sustainability has recently seen improvements to the gallery’s conferencing areas on the fourth floor and the fourth floor galleries which host special exhibitions and displays year-round. As part of their brief, Building Surveyors Drivers Jonas Deloitte needed to ensure that the gallery’s environmental conditions were optimised to protect the works of art on display. The large traditional single glazed windows overlooking the docks

capture light throughout the day and so offer superb viewing conditions but also need to provide the required environmental conditions for the display of art works. To help find a solution, Drivers Jonas Deloitte consulted with the UK’s leading secondary glazing specialist, Selectaglaze and the company’s local partner, Fenestral. With a wealth of experience within Listed and historic buildings Selectaglaze and Fenestral were uniquely placed to understand the very special nature of Tate Liverpool’s requirements.

Following trials the preferred solution was a pair of white powder painted hinged casements arched to follow the window line. With flush hinges, white gaskets and concealed locking the frames provide minimalist lines. Tate Liverpool requested special protection against damaging UV light, which was achieved with 6.8mm clear laminated glass together with an additional specialist UV film. Multipoint locking and high compression seals ensure tight seals and so help maintain temperature and humidity within the gallery. The hinged panels allow easy access for cleaning and maintenance. After a full assessment by Tate Liverpool staff who supervised the process, the work was undertaken outside gallery opening hours and caused no disruption to the art work on display. www.selectaglaze.co.uk

New Moscow Raceway Can Host International Motorsport CompetitionCompleted in summer 2012, the new Moscow Raceway at Wolokolamsk, situated to the North West of Moscow, now resounds to the roar of high performance racing car engines, the screeching of tyres and the heady smell of racing fuel in the air. With its 15 curves, diverse range of layout options, motor racing at the new circuit will not just be placing maximum demands on the drivers but will test the durability of the competing teams and their cars.Responsible for the overall design of the new venue, the internationally renowned team of Architects and Civil Engineers, Tilke based in Aachen, Germany, made the final decision to use Hauraton FASERFIX® SUPER high-performance drainage channels throughout the race circuit. Approximately 10,000 metres of these channels in nominal widths of 100, 150 and 200 mm were installed at the 4.07 km long race track. The FASERFIX® channels with a loading Class of F900 meet all the demands of international motorsport competition. The circuit’s drainage systems have been engineered with maximum safety and performance in mind. The Hauraton Technical Support Team advised on the drainage channels and gratings to employ and provided on-site help and guidance during installation.All of the channels on the race circuit and pit lane had their ductile iron gratings bolted down. Interestingly, the channels in the paddock area and in front of the team garages can be used as temporary cable ducts. Here, the ductile iron gratings are secured using the Hauraton boltless locking system SIDE-LOCK®, allowing communication cables to be installed and subsequently removed quickly and easily. For example, 10 metres of grating can be removed in about 90 seconds with just 70 seconds to replace all 20 covers.The Moscow Raceway has been approved by the FIA and passed the inspection with flying colours. Howe Green Access Covers Keep The Tramshed On TrackHowe Green’s access covers were chosen for The Tramshed EC2, the latest Mark Hix venture, offering diners a simple but ultimately trendy steak and chicken experience in an impressive post-industrial space.

Interiors specialists, Tekne Shopfitting Limited carried out the refurbishment of the Grade II listed building, once home to electricity generators powering local trams at the turn-of-the-century. Designed by Waugh Thistleton Architects, the striking scheme respects the heritage of the towering building and introduces contemporary materials within an Edwardian glazed brick interior, which was painstakingly preserved.

Tekne’s remit also included creating a glazed ceiling for additional soundproofing and a bespoke steel framework for the elevated Damien Hirst cow and cockerel in formaldehyde, which takes centre stage in the 180-cover restaurant. Howe Green’s 5000 Series aluminium access covers provide a reliable route to the essential under-floor building services in the Tramshed’s smart public washrooms and busy kitchens.

To ensure an excellent aesthetic finish, Tekne fitted four covers and inlaid each frame with a resin flooring to match the surrounding area. Double-sealed for use over foul drainage, with a third seal fitted to help prevent dirt ingress between the cover and frame, Howe Green’s access covers were the ideal solution in areas where easy maintenance is essential and optimum hygiene paramount. Made to order with no price premium to pay or additional lead times required, the covers are industry proven to withstand heavy foot traffic and sit flush with the surrounding floor, posing no trip hazard to staff or diners.

failed cellar barrel vaults stabilised without rebuildiNG

The cellar of an end of terrace Georgian property in Bristol was being converted into two additional dwelling rooms as part of a larger conversion. While this cellar was below the street level at the front of the property, the adjacent site was at a lower level and a high retaining wall formed the side of the cellar. Lateral movement of this wall had resulted in cracking and deformation of the brickwork vaults in the two cellar rooms and required stabilising. Repair specialist, Helifix Ltd, was able to restore structural integrity and also avoid any expensive reconstruction of the vaults.

The lateral movement in the retaining wall had caused a loss of buttress support for the barrel vaults in the cellar rooms causing them to separate at their crowns, along the vault centre lines, and allowing the vaults to relax downward. A repair scheme was need that would secure the vaults without any rebuilding as this would have necessitated closure of the pavement for health and safety reasons.

Helifix designed a repair, undertaken by Approved Installer, TRAC Structural Ltd, to reinstate the integrity of the barrel vaults and prevent further structural movement. Stainless steel HeliBars were bonded into the underside of the brickwork to reinforce the vault and re-connect the separated crowns. Fully grouted CemTies were then installed vertically into the vault soffit to reconnect the separated rings and stabilise the areas that had suffered downward movement.

To complete the stabilisation, TRAC carried out a separate scheme, designed by a consulting engineer to restrain and stabilise the retaining wall using traditional tie bars and external pattress plates. The rapid, non-disruptive Helifix repairs cost-effectively stabilised the cellar vaults and enabled its conversion into an additional living area. www.helifix.co.uk

rmiG perforated solar shadiNG keeps the heat off freNch school

A distinctive and creative solar shading solution has been manufactured by RMIG to help reduce the risk of building and classroom overheating while improving the comfort for students at the Lycée Polyvalent de Vienne in the Saint Romain en Gal area of France.The perforated metal solar shading forms part of a recent project to restructure and extend the school while incorporating a range of energy efficient and environmentally beneficial initiatives in the overall design.The architects’ vision for the solar shading was to create a unique structure that joins together multiple triangular sections of perforated metal to create a three-dimensional ‘bat-wing’ effect on the front of the building that not only added to its aesthetics, but also provided a highly effective sunscreen.The solution, which was developed in conjunction with the architects and engineered by RMIG, involves 180 sunscreens manufactured from 2mm thick galvanised steel incorporating seven different diameter circular perforations in a special RMIG ‘Cloud’ design layout, which provides an apparently random pattern across the surface of each screen. RMIG developed and tested prototypes to ensure that the final perforation solution and forming processes for each of the 3.6m x 1.1m sunscreens would not only provide effective shading, but also be uncomplicated to install on site. During this process it was found that the sunscreen’s irregular angles prevented the original uniform perforation pattern from being used, as it would not fit perfectly within the triangular panel shapes. As a result, RMIG developed the random pattern solution using seven different sized perforations ranging from 8mm up to 50mm in diameter. www.rmig.com

ISO Energy Installs ‘Green’ Heating In A Hampshire PropertyThe property consists of a house of six bedrooms and six bathrooms recently completed in the Southampton area. It is set in 130 acres mostly down to sheep and replaced a comparatively modern farmhouse with outbuildings. This new house by Hugh Petter of ADAM Architecture, is designed in a manner that suggests an organic development. The house is informal in plan and each wing has its own distinct architectural character. It is intended to look like a farmhouse, which has evolved over time, both through new extensions and through adaptation of outbuildings

that adjoin the main block. This conceptual approach resolved the planning officers’ concerns about the scale of the new house and enables each room to enjoy the spectacular views out over the Test Valley. The clients are very happy with the finished building. Hugh Petter commented, “The site had a complicated planning history and, after a difficult

3-year planning process, the house was eventually granted permission in 2010. The commendable sustainability credentials of this building, with its integrated renewable energy and a wide range of other sustainability measures, make it an exemplar of a modern family home that is both traditional and progressive.” Part of the remit of Main Contractor R.W. Armstrong of Basingstoke was to install renewable energy systems in the new house for both ethical ecological reasons and also to limit heating expenses in this age of ever escalating fossil fuel prices. Armstrong in turn consulted ISO Energy, experts in all forms of ‘green’ energy, to design and install a renewable source for the central heating and hot water supplies for the entire house. ISO Energy suggested a dual approach with ground sourced heating combined with Pholtovoltaic Solar panels to provide electricity. During a site visit it was decided that, since water sourced heating has proved the most energy

efficient of all, a large pond [perhaps small lake would be the Estate agent’s description] should be used as an energy source. Unfortunately it also became clear that the lake’s area alone was insufficient to source the property’s considerable heating needs and the final plan consisted of 600 metres of looped piping in the lake and 200 metres under the rough ground beside. Filled with anti-freeze mixture the polybutylene pipe collects the solar-fed heat in the water and earth and circulates it up to the House’s plant room. At this point high technology takes over as the warmed liquid is fed into two CTC Compact three phase heat pumps each with a 12kW capacity. These energy efficient pumps, manufactured by a Swedish company that has been involved in renewable energy for over 80 years, extract the heat from the liquid and, through compression and dual heat exchangers, raises the temperature to a level suitable for central heating and hot water systems. The energy is then fed into the property’s hot water system via a nearby super insulated 450 litre hot water tank linked to a similar slave tank of 300 litres capacity. The CTC heat pumps’ efficiency is demonstrated by a claimed COP rating well in excess of four at 35˚ degrees, in other words the pumps deliver over four times the input of electricity they consume. The addition of the electricity generated from the Monocrystalline Photovoltaic panels, installed on the south-facing side of the roof of an existing barn, makes the energy system even more attractive. The modules are designed to fulfil the electricity needs of the House under nearly all conditions and of course feed any excess into the Grid at a present tariff of 32.9p per kWh. It is particularly satisfying that the Photovoltaic addition is designed to supply all the power needs of the heat pumps. It is too early to give exact figures for energy costs under the new system but early indications are that ISO Energy’s estimates are if anything on the low side. What is clear is that the use of renewable energy fulfils all the green qualities desired by the owners of the property, absolutely minimal emissions and a very significant saving in fossil fuel use. www.iso.co.uk
