She Consulted us (CVK) on 20.10.09 with the query which one of the two advices, (Surgeries) she should choose for her Back Condition! The Micro Discectomy alone as suggested by Ortho Specialist (I) (Total cost about Rs.1.5 lakhs approx)

Micro Discectomy along with posterior stabilisation with cages as suggested by Ortho Specialist (II) (Total Cost about 2.5 lakhs approx)

She was advised a trial therapy of PEMFE for about 1 week and decide for herself depending upon the response.

She was admitted in St.Isabel’s Hospital for EM Pulse Therapy to her spine; started on 23.10.09. After 24 hrs she was able to sit for > ½ hour and able to walk to the toilet on her own. She made steady and good progress over the next 3 days and was discharged on 26.10.09 with 80% reduction in pain; she was able to sit for longer duration, walk without pain and slowly climb 10 steps of the staircase. The total cost of hospitalization including private A/C Room etc… was about Rs. 20,000/-. She continued Empulse therapy at home diligently. She came for three reviews reporting excellent progress and on the last visit 15.12.09 was so much improved that she wanted to dance!! (Bharatha Natyam). TRULY AN HOUGNI TYPE OF ESCAPE !!!

Lumbar Microdiscectomy is one of the Commonest Surgeries undertaken for LBA (Bread & Butter Surgery) Particularly in young and middle aged persons resulting in a great deal of morbidity not to mention the economic and Psychological impact factors clearly ‘health’ is sent for a ‘sixer’! There is no real audit to quantify the damage wrecked by hasty or unwarranted spinal surgery!! Perhaps a David Eddy and his Archimedes is required to expose the truth?

The present case is one of many LBAS that have been helped PEMEF therapy is indeed a boon of millions of persons suffering from LBA and this fact should be studied in a large study with controls, documented & followed up for at least 2 years.

The Comparative economics of treatment of LBA shows stunning difference between the costs of treatment envisaged in this case by the specialists (Rs1.5 to 2.5 lakhs) VS. Rs 20,000/- incurred by the patient a difference of 7 to 12 times ) !!

Finally the COST EFFECTIVE INDEX of PEMFE is clearly superior to that of surgery for Acute Low Back Ache.
