Tips on helping children with homework Children are more successful in school when parents take an acve interest in their homework - it shows children that what they do is important. Of course, helping with homework shouldn't mean spending hours hunched over a desk. Parents can be supporve by demonstrang study and organisaon skills, explaining a tricky problem, or just encouraging kids to take a break. And who knows? Parents might even learn a thing or two! Here are some ps to guide the way: 1. Know the teachers - and what they're looking for. Aend school events, such as parent-teacher conferences, to meet your child's teachers. Ask about their homework policies and how you should be involved. 2. Set up a homework-friendly area. Make sure kids have a well - lit place to complete homework. Keep supplies - paper, pencils, glue, scissors - within reach. 3. Schedule a regular study me. Some children work best in the aſternoon, following a snack and play period; others may prefer to wait unl aſter dinner. 4. Help them make a plan. On heavy homework nights or when there's an especially heſty assignment to tackle, encourage your child break up the work into manageable chunks. Create a work schedule for the night if necessary - and take me for a 15 minute break every hour, if possible. 5. Keep distracons to a minimum. This means no TV, loud music, or phone calls. (Occasionally, though, a phone call to a classmate about an assignment can be helpful.) 6. Make sure children do their own work. They won't learn if they don't think for themselves and make their own mistakes. Parents can make suggesons and help with direcons. But it's a child's job to do the learning. 7. Be a movator and monitor. Ask about assignments, quizzes, and tests. Give encouragement, check completed homework, and make yourself available for quesons and concerns. 8. Set a good example. 9. Praise their work and efforts. Post an art project on the refrigerator. Menon academic achievements to relaves. 10. If there are connuing problems with homework, get help. Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Garden News

Now that Winter is officially here, many of our trees are resting. Deciduous trees have lost their leaves and growth has slowed down. This is a good time to transplant old trees or plant new ones. In the following photo, Grade 5/6 students are transplanting a blueberry bush from a wine barrel to the ground. It was getting dried out during summer, and we thought it was better in the ground with the other bush so it could get a better supply of water from the irrigation hoses. Some rose bushes will also get transplanted to sunnier positions. It's an ideal time of year to refine and plan the garden better. Anna

What is Important about Caring?

If we didn’t care about people or

Chaplain’s Chat with Dave

Thankful Juice Somehow, our Friday night family mealtimes had turned into whinge-sessions. The kids were complaining about school, each-other and more. It had to stop! The next Friday, I made a special drink – mixed fruit juice with fizzy lemonade – in a large jug and placed it in the middle of the table. “This,” I said, “is thankful juice.” I began filling their glasses. “You cannot have your first sip until you say something from this week that made you happy – something you are thankful for.” The kids loved the game and the next Friday they asked if we could have thankful juice again. It became a family ritual. One busy Friday, I left the glasses off the table and hoped it would go unnoticed. “WHERE’S THE THANKFUL JUICE?!?!” my grade 3 daughter asked in dismay. I explained I had forgotten to buy any and was sorry. She stood and told her grade 6 brother to follow her. As they went into the kitchen, I heard her say, “You get the glasses and I’ll get the thankful juice.” When they returned to the table, glasses were placed in front of each family member. Then a jug of water was placed in the middle of the table, “This is our thankful juice tonight.” And it was. Once thankfulness is part of our lives, we don’t let go of it easily. Gratitude does great things for our self-esteem, our relationships and our general health. Create a thankfulness tradition in your family, today!

Cybersmart Coming off a very successful Cybersmart presentation, we have had many requests for the Cybersmart website. This website has information for all age groups and also has connections to social media and clips to educate and support. The address is www.cybersmart.gov.au.

I hope this helps.
