Save the Star TowerAn original play written by Hofan Chau and the students of Fung Kai Liu Man Shek Tong Secondary School for the HK Schools Drama Festival

Synopsis

Once upon a time in a small village lived the 3 little pig brothers(One-dom, Two-dom and Three-dom). All of them were madly inlove with the village Princess who lives in the Star Tower. Due tothe neglect of their duties, they get kicked out of their home bytheir mother (Madom).

The brothers, desperate for jobs, sign a contract with the Big BadWolf Deconstruction Company. The company, owned by LadyWolfe, has permission from the Chief Executive Duck to tear downthe Star Tower. The pigs discover that they are bound by theircontract to help tear down the tower, or they will be made intobacon.

In order to get out of tearing down the tower, the 3 little pigspretend to be sick with bird flu. This creates widespread panic andstops construction for a while. However, Ma'dom, on hearing thather sons are sick, breaks into the quarantined site and exposes thisfabrication.

Demolition resumes. A final confrontation between the police + theprotestors take place; but despite the protestors' efforts the Towercomes down. Then suddenly, Duck arrives, having really caughtthe bird flu, and on his dying breath, declares the Star Tower ahistorical monument. Although the tower is in shambles, the Dom-doms promise to help the Princess rebuild her Tower.

Scene 1: Kicked out of the house

(The 3 pigs are in their house. ONE-Dom is lifting weights. TWO-DOM is playing cards with THREE-Dom, and is obviouslycheating his younger brother. THREE-DOM, however, is quitehappy even though he is losing. Ever so often he talks to his stuffed frog toy. Suddenly, they hear the clomp-clomp of Ma'dom'sfootsteps.)

TWO: Ma'dom!

(They quickly try to get in line, throwing cards, weights and Mr Frog in a mess)

MA: Where are they? One-DOM! Two-DOM! Three-DOM! DOM-DOM-DOM-DOM!

3 PIGS: Yes, Madom!

(Madom conducts v a military inspection of the room, and is not pleased at all with the results. She picks up the Frog and throws it back at THREE)

MA: What a mess! Your grandmother is coming today. You needto clean this place up!

(The 3 pigs groan to each other)

ONE: Im not cleaning up.

TWO: Im not cleaning up.

THREE: Mr Frog isnt cleaning up.

ONE: But its your cards.

TWO: But its your ball.

ONE: But its your Scrabble!

TWO: But its your weights!

THREE: Mr Fr-

ONE + TWO: Its your Mr Frog!

MA: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! (The 3 pigs rock back from theforce of her voice)

3 PIGS: Yes, Madom!

MA: Every single time I come in here, its like a rubbish pile.You should be old enough to clean up after yourselves, blahblah blah blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah, blah.Blah Blah! Blah-Blah blah blah!!

3 PIGS: Yes, Madom. (They have heard it a million timesbefore)

MA: Blah blah?

3 PIGS: Yes, Madom.

MA: Good. Im going shopping now, and when I come back, I

want to see this place

3 PIGS: As clean as a new born pig.

(Ma exits. The 3 pigs look at each other.)

ONE: Well?

TWO: Well?

THREE: (to Frog) Well.

(Pause. Ma reappears, on her way out with her shopping bag.)

MA: Well, get on with it! (She exits)

TWO: Do you think if we

ONE: No.

TWO: What if -

ONE: No. Bad idea. Very bad idea. She'll make us drink thatsmelly tea again.

THREE: Smelly tea is horrible!

TWO: Well, couldn't we

ONE: Just sweep the floor. (He hands TWO the broom. Suddenly,the Princess crosses the stage. The 3 pigs drop everything and runto the window)

3 Pigs: The Princess!

THREE: Where is she going?

ONE: Home to the Star TowerTWO: She looks worried.

3 PIGS: But beautiful.

(They stare dreamily into the distance)

THREE (to Frog) : Im going to marry the princess.

TWO: Why would she look at you?

ONE: Im the one who is big and strong.

TWO: But a bit stupid.

ONE: Who are you calling stupid?

TWO: Stupid!

ONE: Say that again?

TWO: Stupid! Stupid as a pig!

(ONE punches TWO, and it turns into a fight. At the climax,Madom enters)

MA: Stop this AT ONCE! This room is a mess! You three area mess. I wont stand this any more. Get out! Get out of myhouse!

3 PIGS: What?

MA: Get out of my house. Get out of my life! Dont come back until you have learnt to look after yourselves.

ONE: You mean, out there?

TWO: But we wont have a place to eat or sleep

MA: I dont care. Get out. O-U-T OUT! (She sweeps them out with the broom and slams the door on them)

Scene 2: The Contract

(The Three Pigs look at each other and the slammed door. THREE tries to knock, but there is no answer)

ONE: Was she serious?

TWO: She sounded very serious.

THREE: She sounded really mad.

ONE: What do we do now?

(pause)

ONE: Well?

TWO: Well what?

THREE: What do we do now?

(They look at each other, and sigh.)

ONE: We need to find a job.

TWO: And somewhere to sleep.

THREE: And something to eat

(They sigh. The thought of that is so big and heavy that they sit down on the road.)

THREE: Do you think we will get a job if we just sit here?

ONE: Maybe.

TWO: No. We gotta do something.

(Long silence)

TWO: We gotta do something.

(Long silence)

TWO: I don't think this is working.

(Silence)

TWO: We gotta do something.

(Sound cue: fast car breaking)

ONE: Holy cow!

THREE: What was that?

(Car door opens. Trumpets sound. A crowd begins to gather tolook at what is happening)

VILLAGER1 (RABBIT): That's the Chief Executive and LadyWolfe

VILLAGER2: What a big car!

HERALD (MOUSE): Come one, come all! The Big Bad Wolf Reconstruction company has seen how poor you are and hascome to offer you an answer.

THREE: Are we poor?

TWO: Yes!

HERALD: We are looking for strong, ambitious young men to helpus develop this area and transform it into a New WorldEstate

ONE: I'm strong!

TWO: I'm ambitious!

THREE: I'm young..

HERALD: We will offer free food and good pay in return for yourhard work

VILLAGER2: Free food!

HERALD: Plus 50 pieces of gold

Crowd: Fifty pieces!

HERALD: And all you have to do is to sign your name here onthe

Crowd: Where do I sign?Hey, don't push!

(The crowd surges to grab the contract. The brothers join forcesand somehow gets all three of their names on to the page)

HERALD: Thank you, thank you for your enthusiasm. You arenow employees of the Big Bad Wolf Deconstruction company.Here are your helmets; Here are your uniforms and now if you come this way

THREE: We got a job! This is my first job!

Scene Three: Duck & Wolf play Monopoly

Scene change. Music: Lain's theme + construction sounds.Chorus push in a lot of boxes on stage to set up the constructionsite. Lady Wolf and Chief Executive Duck meet in the center

WOLF: A New World Estate (she laughs) and all mine!Mine! Mine! Mine!

DUCK: Lady Wolf

WOLF: My dear Chief Executive. We never finished our lastgame of Monopoly.

DUCK: Not again!

WOLF: I insist.

DUCK: Right. Right.

(They set up the board. Wolf owns most of the properties)

DUCK: Er, so.. I hear you're building some new houses in PigWan.

WOLF: Luxury estates. I'm going to turn it into Beverly Hills.

DUCK: Right. Erm well, you know there's the old Star Towerthere.

WOLF: Oh?

DUCK: The villagers will be unhappy if you will take it down.

WOLF: Oh?

DUCK: And I may be forced to

WOLF: (snarls) Those un-grateful people. I give them jobs, andthey still complain. Complain, complain, complain. What isthis world coming to?

DUCK: Yes. Well. I'm in a difficult position. It is election year.

(There is a knock on the door)

WOLF: What is it?

RABBIT: Uh I've come to give some petitions to-

WOLF: The Chief Executive is busy.

RABBIT: I, er..

WOLF: Do you know how much I earn a minute? Do you knowhow many dollars of my time you have wasted by interruptingour game?

RABBIT: I, er

WOLF: And do you know how anxious I am to finish this gamebefore I get too HUNGRY?

(Rabbit runs away, dropping the petitions. There is silence. )

WOLF: Your turn, I believe.

DUCK: My Lady

WOLF: Yes?

DUCK: Look, we've been good friends ever since I became

Financial Secretary. But with the election coming up I haveto listen to the people this year.

WOLF: You, my friend, need to remember that you are not elected by a popular vote. You are elected by a smallnumber of people, most of whom happen to be very good

friends of mine

DUCK: Uh. Right. I'll get the job done.

WOLF: Good, good. Shall we break for lunch? I'm very hungryall of a sudden.

(Wolf calls for her attendants, who clear up the table as they walk off. Cue in music: Music: Molto vivace 2 nd movement of Beethoven's 9 th symphony)

Scene Five: H5N1!

Transition: Chorus move in with more boxes. The 3 pigs enter.TWO is reading a copy of the contract, while ONE is angrilycircling around him. THREE follows, upset.

ONE: Our job is to take down the Princess' Tower? We can't dothat!

TWO: I tell you, it's in our contract. That's what they are paying usto do.

ONE: Let's quit then!

TWO: We've just signed something very binding. We'll be madeinto bacon if we do that.

THREE: (frightened) Bacon bacon

ONE: I'll rip up the contract!

TWO: This is just a copy. The real one is somewhere really safe intheir office.

ONE: I'll knock down their office.

THREE: Bacon Frogs legs

ONE: I don't care if I'm made into bacon or sausages. I won't makethe Princess homeless.

TWO: Look, even if we quit, someone else is just going to do it forthe 50 gold pieces.

ONE: Are you going to knock down the Star Tower?

TWO: No, I -

ONE: Because if you are, I'm going to hit you.

THREE: Big Brother

ONE: I need to hit something.

TWO: Look, it's not my fault.

ONE: I need to hit something.

TWO: We need a plan.

ONE: We need a plan... we need a plan. (He walks in angrycircles, gradually decelerating)

THREE: The Princess!

ONE + TWO: Yes! Let's go and talk to the Princess

FOREMAN (enters) : Where do you think you are going?Lunchtime is over. Help me move the cement mixer. (The3 pigs dont move) Is there a problem?

TWO: Uh yes. Yes. A big problem. My little brother (points toTHREE) didn't wash his hands before eating.

FOREMAN : Didn't wash his hands?

TWO: ( making it up as he goes) Yes. You knowhe was playingwith the chickens you know.. chicken, bird flu verydangerous

ONE: Oh-uh.

TWO: Oh dear! Big Brotheryou look at bit green too! Look howhis eyes are rolling! (whispers) Come on! Do this for thePrincess!

(ONE rolls around with a stomach ache. THREE throws up.)

FOREMAN : Look here. I

TWO: A fever. This is really bad. We have to take them to adoctor.

FOREMAN: Is it really that serious?

TWO: Are you stupid? Do you know what happened in SARS?

WORKER: What's going on?

TWO: Bird flu. H5N1!

WORKER: Bird flu! Oh my goodness!

FOREMAN: Wait a minute

MOUSE: We better quarantine the site.

ONE: But we need a doctor

FOREMAN: No one can leave until I speak with Lady WolfeTake them inside to lie down, and seal off the site.

Scene 6: Ma'dom takes care of H5N1

(Music: News report)

REPORTER: Good evening. There has been a suspected case of H5N1 in the village of Pig-Wan. Health officials areextremely concerned and have asked for a quarantine of thesite.

(Ma'dom appears from behind the audience)

REPORTER: As a result of this, all construction work for theNew World Estates have come to a grinding halt. ThePrincess has taken this time to rally the people

MA'DOM: Bird flu? One-dom! Two-dom! Three-dom!

FOREMAN: I'm sorry, ma'm, but I can't let you enter.

MA'DOM: I need to see my sons!

FOREMAN: I'm sorry, I don't know who your sons are but youcan't see them.

WORKER: (appearing) M'am, we cannot let you in without-

(Ma'dom attempts to push past him)

WORKER: If you'll just wait here, I'll

(Ma'dom whacks them out of the way with the broom, tears downthe tape, and disappears into the site.)

WORKER: Should we call Lady Wolfe?

FOREMAN: I don't think we need to bother her Lady with-

WORKER: We'll have to keep her in.

FOREMAN: You want to try and stop her?

(Ma'dom comes out, dragging ONE + TWO-DOM by the ears.THREE follows.)

MA: Don't you DARE to try and lie to me. I know when you arepretending.

ONE: I told you this was a very bad idea.

MA: I'm sorry my sons are such liars. I am going to take themhome right now and cure them with some smelly tea.

THREE: Oh no!

ONE: Not smelly tea!

3 PIGS: Please, no smelly tea!

(The three pigs look at each other; then break free from Ma'dom'sgrasp)

THREE: Freedom!

ONE+ TWO: Dom-dom-dom-dom! (They run off)

MA: Get back here get back here! (She chases after them)

WORKER: So.. there's no H5N1?

FOREMAN: Should I call Lady Wolf?

Scene Seven : The Star Tower comes down

Music: Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. The Construction sounds

start again. Princess and Rabbit sit at the bottom of the Tower.Wolf paces around in her own space, in another corner.

WOLF: (on phone) Hmmm? Yes, I'm glad that's been sorted.Go ahead and tear it down then. I'll be watching from here.Yes what about them. Well, the law is on our side. Theywill be removed by force...

RABBIT: They've started again..

PRINCESS: I thought there would be more people here tonight.

(THREE runs up)

THREE: Princess! Princess!

PRINCESS: Three-dom?

THREE: You know my name?

PRINCESS: Of course. Where are your brothers?

ONE + TWO: We're here to help. Dom-dom-dom-dom!

PRINCESS: I knew that I could count on you!

ONE: I'll hit anyone who tries to hurt you.

PRINCESS: No, no violence. We're just going to surround theTower peacefully with candles.

ONE: And not move an inch.

PRINCESS: That's right.

(They look up to the sound of helicopters)

POLICE: This is your final warningif you do not leave, you willbe removed by force. I repeat, you will be removed by force.

RABBIT + PRINCESS: Never!

3 PIGS: Dom-dom-dom-dom!

(The sound of helicopters. Tear gas falls. The Tower is taken apart.

The protestors watch, coughing and helpless.)

PRINCESS: No! My home!

WOLF: (laughing) This, is progress!

(Duck appears at the corner; pale and sick.)

DUCK: Wait! Wait! (music cuts)Stop the demolition. Please.

WOLF: What is it, Ducky?

DUCK: You won't believe thisI caught bird flu.(laughs) I'm dying, Wolf I'm dyingI dont care about the election anymore.. I just want to beremembered.. as the Duck who cared about his people I,Chief Executive Duck, declare the Star Tower to be animportant historical monument, and forbid there to be morebuilding in Pig-Wan. (He dies)

TWO: But the Tower is all torn down

RABBIT: I think he's gone crazy.

TWO: Like my brother.

ONE: Who are you calling crazy?

TWO: Crazy like Mr Frog. Where is Mr Frog?

THREE: Mr Frog got squashed.

ONE + TWO: What?

THREE: By the Tower. He was trying to save me and ( he cries )

MA: (appearing) Mr Frog is fine. ( She holds up Frog )

3 PIGS: Ma'dom!

THREE: Mr Frog!

MA: Well, it looks like the Princess is going to need some helpcleaning up this mess. Whose going to help her?

3 PIGS: Me!

MA: But only after you clean your own mess up in the house.

(The 3 pigs look at each other, about the protest by reflex, and then decide not to. ONE goes over to the Princess)

ONE: It's okay, Princess. We'll build the Tower back for you.

TWO + THREE: Yeah! Dom-dom-dom dom!

(Cue in end music Circle songs #6. Villagers surround thePrincess and the broken Tower and start to rebuild it center stage.The Reporter tries to pester Wolf, who snarls and exits angrily.)
