A Message from our Board President

Hi, everyone,

Now that we’ve all had a

chance to remember what we

are thankful for, I wanted to

share a few things.

First, twice in recent weeks,

Liberty Missionary Baptist

Church downtown has been

vandalized by someone chalk-

ing disturbing, even threaten-

ing, messages on their side-

walk and their building. I am

sending a note to the church,

expressing my sorrow that

this happened. I also plan to

contact Mayor Winnecke and

ask him to explicitly call out

such behavior and state for

the record that the City of

Evansville will not tolerate this

attempt at intimidation.

Second, I have struggled to

prepare myself to face family

members who I know voted

for the candidates I opposed.

The advice I read that reso-

nated with me was to listen

much more than I talk; to lis-

ten for understanding not for

argument; and when I talk, to

talk about the ideas that I find

wrong/hurtful/troublesome,

and not talk about the people

who hold those ideas using

those terms. I hope we can

follow that advice within our

church, too. People can

change their minds about the

ideas they hold, but I think

they rarely do that because

someone called them names.

And there is that “inherent

worth and dignity” idea we

profess to believe in…

Third, I recognize a need in

myself to learn more about

systemic racism, and how to

combat that oppression built

into our society. If I am going

to stretch my comfort zone to

join in the work of confront-

ing that oppression, I need

more knowledge to do that.

When Mollie and I visited Val-

ley UU on our trip to Tempe

this fall, they had set up a

Black Lives Matter Library of

books and DVDs for folks to

borrow, and they watched for

community events they could

attend as a group (films,

speakers, protests). I like that

idea and will be working on

our Church Library in the

coming month to make room

for a new collection of works

dealing with systemic oppres-

sion, in case any of you want

to join me on this learning

experience. Please let me

know if you see a pertinent

local event or if you want to

discuss any of these books and

their ideas.

Thank you.

Support Teams

UUCE has support teams in place to assist those members who

need assistance with activities of daily living, such as grocery shopping,

lawn care, meal preparation, etc., due to illness, death in the family, or

other circumstance. If you or someone else needs such help, please

notify Sharon Dennis.

Equal Exchange: Fair Trade Products UUCE has fairly traded coffee that helps to support the

Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. We also have

fairly traded tea, fruit bars, and chocolate...products that

help small farmers around the world! Place your special

order for Equal Exchange Fair Trade chocolate, cocoa, and

coffee by the 15th of the month. Coffee prices average $8-

$10 per 10oz package plus shipping. Your purchase sup-

ports the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. Con-

tact Chris Norrington for details or stop by our Equal Ex-

change table on Sunday mornings.
