Welcome to Spring!

Winter really does seem to have bypassed us in earnest this year, so we’re into school holidays for Easter and planning for Summer travel before we know it.

This month’s edition takes a look at travel plans and covers tips and advice around fitness, beauty, books, family & gardening.

Joe, our resident garden guru, has put together a great list of holiday advice for your indoor and outdoor plants. Mark, our fitness fanatic and personal trainer, tells you how you can keep that regime going and maybe take your holiday time as a moment to try something different in your fitness routine.

Whether you are going abroad or staying in the UK, family scene page is all about those ‘must haves’ on your holiday. Need some inspiration? How about our book page which introduces downloads for the first time – that pearl of wisdom can travel in your phone, ipod or ipad without adding to your packing nightmares.

Planning is the key, so take some timeout over Easter and get those plans in place!

When you are looking for a great place to dine out locally, do you base your decision on great service, attention to detail and staff knowledge as well as taste, choice and atmosphere? If so, then book your next meal at Oundle Mill, which is located in Barnwell, Oundle, near Peterborough.

My partner, Steve, and I were invited to sample the amazing delights of head chef Gavin Austin and his superb team. To make it extra special, we decided to stay over for the night as they have two fabulous, individually designed rooms on the property, with another 13 planned for 2013.

We headed to the Mill straight after work and were met by the manager, Paul Richardson, who showed us around and took us to our room. We have travelled to some amazing places around the world, but didn’t expect to find such a chic and decadent room on our doorstep! The Mill Suite is huge with an attic ceiling and a superb range of amenities and facilities, including a sumptuous, stone double ended bath. With a real flame contemporary fire warming the room, we immediately felt at home and relaxed.

Oundle Mill – Exceptional dining on your doorstep

10 April 2012 | Email: [email protected]

Prior to dinner we sat at the bar and discussed the menu and the wine list with Paul, whose knowledge was first class. Both are very comprehensive and the a la carte menu was creative with a number of unique dishes on offer. The attentive staff were knowledgeable about the food and able to assist with our choices. Steve opted for Gavin’s signature starter dish of tempura black pudding, hen’s egg, crisp shallots, bacon and devilled sauce, which looked like a work of art and was simply delicious. I opted for the butternut risotto with Norfolk Dapple cheese. I could easily have had this for my main; it was so wholesome and tasty. Other starters included chicken terrine, Brancaster mussels and fishcakes.

For my main, I wanted something light and different and the steamed plaice with herb spaetzle (a type of noodle), prawns and lemongrass nage (a delicately fragranced sauce) was perfect. Steve chose wisely with the braised Bridge Farm lamb. Both meals were presented beautifully and tasted as good as they looked. Other mains included slow cooked belly pork, rib eye steak and an upside down beetroot tart with goats cheese.

Page 11: The Community Scene

Telephone: 01780 783613 | April 2012

Having enjoyed an Italian crisp, dry white wine (Gavi Gavi) with our starters, Paul suggested we try a French red with our mains and we opted for a Corbieres from Chateau La Baronne, which was excellent.

Normally two courses are enough for us. However, we were recommended Gavin’s signature desert dish of banana tart with pecan ice-cream and caramel sauce, and simply could not resist it!! It had the most delicious flavours, without being too sweet.

The menu is very well priced, particularly considering the quality of the venue, food, presentation and service. With starters and desserts from around £6 and mains starting from as little as £12.50, making this the perfect place to dine any day of the week.

The perfect end to a perfect evening was the ability to walk upstairs to our stunning room where we enjoyed a small glass of the complimentary sloe gin whilst relaxing and listening to a CD that was prepared exclusively for Mr & Mrs Smith hotels, which Oundle Mill is a member of.

Oundle Mill can cater for any occasion from a simple snack in the bar to birthday celebrations or weddings, it offers private dining and bespoke menus where desired. There are also meeting room facilities and fabulous outdoor dining options. You can have exclusive or part use of the Mill, which would be ideal for weddings, as they hold a civil licence to carry out your ceremony, and they have the most picturesque setting for your photos.

I have been the Head Chef at Oundle Mill for 6 months now. I created the menu with a focus on good British

fayre with a twist of elegance. I strive for a happy audience and empty plates. We have an open kitchen

policy and welcome customer feedbackHead Chef Gavin Austin

BYTHAMS CHARITY SPONSORED RIDE

The Annual Bythams Charity Sponsored Ride takes places on Monday 7 May.

A rare opportunity to spend your day riding through stunning private parkland, with no traffic around to spoil the serenity, is being offered in Lincolnshire for the early Bank Holiday weekend.

Riders of all abilities are being invited to take part in a sponsored charity event in the grounds of Grimsthorpe Castle near Bourne from 10am. There are three routes to choose from – 8, 12 and 15 miles and all are within the confines of the park. The organisers have introduced some new routes for 2011, but these still take riders through ancient woodlands, past a 50-acre lake and alongside the imposing castle – one of England’s most impressive hidden gems.

The event raises funds to help maintain the village churches of Little Bytham, Castle Bytham, Careby and Creeton, and makes an equally sizeable contribution to a different charity every year. This year, the ride will be supporting 2012 Olympic Para Medal hopeful, Emma Sheardown, based at Hough-on-the-Hill near Grantham. Para dressage rider Emma is already World Freestyle Para Dressage World Champion, clinching the Grade 1a Freestyle title in Kentucky during October 2010.

emmasheardown.co.uk www.kestevenrda.co.uk

Riders can set off between 10am and 2pm (last start time for the 15-mile route is 1pm) – the advance fee is £15 per horse, or £20 on the day. The rides are suitable for all abilities, however under 13s must be accompanied by an adult.

COMMUNITY

This will be the tenth year that this sponsored ride has been held and, up to now, over £26,000 has been raised and we hope 2012 will be a record breaking year for entries and the amount raised

For more information and entry details contact Rosemary on 01778 590350, email [email protected], or visit the event website at www.bccride.com

STAMFORD ARTS CENTRE

Torchbearer 20 APRIL, 7.30pm21 APRIL, 2.30pm & 7.30pm£8 (£5) By Mary BenziesStamford Senior Youth TheatreIt is August 2011; Britain wakes with a hangover and so does Eve. The television plays images of last night’s riots and there are too many questions to be answered. Eve is a beacon, a seventeen year old inspiration to friends, family and just about everyone at the superstore extra. She has been nominated to carry the Olympic flame in the upcoming torch relay, to help spread the light of hope, unity and peace.

So why can she not remember what happened last night? Why do her clothes smell of fire and where are Anna and Brian? Torchbearer is a gripping reminder of what can happen when you forget who you are... even for a second.

The summer time is quickly approaching and Essence of Beauty, Stamford, have given us some of their top tips for preparing your skin for the warmer weather.

Tanning before you go away will give you more self confidence with a natural glow, when you first arrive on the beach. Making sure you exfoliate twice a week beforehand and keeping your skin well moisturised whilst you are away, will ensure that your tan will be even and last longer.

Essence of Beauty offer a pure, natural alternative to traditional chemical-laden cosmetic and tanning products, called Karora. All KARORA products incorporate natural and organic ingredients, delivering flawless colour and long lasting results. KARORA is all about looking healthy, natural and gorgeous, without using parabens, artificial fragrances, synthetic colours or harsh chemicals.

To save time and ensure you look your absolute best at all times;Have all of your waxing done 24-48 hours before going away

A manicure and pedicure will give you the immaculate hands and feet you desire and will want to get out and show off. Whether it’s a polish or gels on your nails, they both automatically enhance the appearance and get you in the holiday spirit.

Say goodbye to your mascara when you go away and have the individual semi-permanent ‘Lash Perfect’ extensions, lasting 4-6 weeks depending on the cycle of your own natural lashes. We recommend top ups every 2-3 weeks. Lash perfect eyelash extension are available in different thicknesses and lengths to ensure you get a natural look and feel.

MINATURESGet yourself down to your local supermarket to stock up on miniature

versions of all your favourite products, why take a huge shampoo with

you, when you only need a mini. I especially love the mini baby oil

(excellent for tanned skin) and dry hair shampoo – prices start from

£1. The Body Shop also does mini’s their divine body butter comes in

a smaller 50ml version for just £5 – Pink Grapefruit is my favourite one.

SAMPLESIt’s slightly cheeky, but ask for samples of your favourite products at your

local beauty counter, then that way you can just take the sample and

leave your big bottles at home.

EMPTY TRAVEL BOTTLESAnother good idea is to buy empty travel bottles which you can put

your own products in – then you can reuse them over and over again.

M&S do a good set for £5.

APPLY ONCE SUN LOTIONMost sun protection ranges now carry ‘apply once’ products. This means

all you have to do is apply the lotion 30 minutes before sun exposure

and you’re good to go for the next 8 hours. I like the Piz Buin 1 Day Long

Lotion (look out for buy one get one free offers) £12.99 - Boots.

TRAVEL STRAIGHTNERSElectrical equipment can be heavy and take up room in your

case, so check if your hotel has a hairdryer then that’s one less

thing to pack. Why not switch your bulky straightners for mini

lightweight ones, all the hair brands do them and you can get

some for as little as £7 – bargain.

Hi BeautiesAs the Easter holidays are upon us its time to put the cold gloomy weather behind us and start thinking

about holidays! So with holidays comes the need to start thinking about travel beauty products, this

month I’m giving my top tips to get all the products you need in your case, but for half the space.

A couple of weeks ago I attended the

it’s the UK’s largest show for health and beauty

professionals. With over 500 brands featuring

all sections of the beauty industry, including;

skincare & aromatherapy, nails, tanning,

I loved the OPI and

products were all

at trade price. I also

bumped into Joey

The best bit is it’s free to get

SO WHAT IS SOCIAL ANXIETY?Social anxiety is a fear of being judged or humiliated or being put ‘on the spot’… also known as social phobia or scopophobia & social anxiety disorder.Social phobia is probably one of the most common phobias that exist today and can occur in many different situations and with many different symptoms including: fear of public speaking, interviews, a fear of talking on the telephone, blushing, stuttering, lack of confidence, certain sexual inhibitions – due to ‘performance anxiety’ & repeated failing of the driving test, feeling embarrassed if put on the spot, hot flushes, fear of eating out or in front of other people, a persistent fear of failure, feelings of inferiority towards others, not being good enough, shy bladder in mainly men (paruresis). The D.S.M.IV Diagnostic and Statistical Manual(‘the mental health bible’) used by the psychiatric profession describes social phobia as “In a ‘nutshell’ social anxiety, social phobia is basically in any situation in your life where you may feel embarrassed, judged, on the spot, silly, out of control etc…

DENTAL PHOBIA (FEAR OF THE DENTIST)Fear of the dentist for most, is not just a phobia of being in the dentist’s chair, it can also extend to rob the sufferer of their self confidence, oral hygiene & their smile.

Estimates show that up to 15% of people avoid dental treatment entirely because of dental anxiety/fear. It’s likely, that as much as 80% of people will experience ‘some sort’ of dental anxiety when in the dental environment. Fear of the dentist can have a variety of sources:• Painful/negativeexperienceduringpreviousdentalvisits• NegativeimageofdentistsonTV/Movies• Afearofinvasion&lackofcontrolwhileinthedentist’schair• Sensitivitytothedentists‘whitecoat’mask, gloves• Hearingthesoundsoftheconsultingroom(drillingetc)• Carelesscommentsfromfriends, familyetc• A sense of embarrassment concerning presenting to thedentist with signs of dental neglect.

If you suffer from any type of phobia, anxiety, panic attacks, compulsive disorders, unwanted habits etc.

Just one thing? Will this all-go pear shaped on holiday?IfindthatIamactuallymoreenthusedtoexercisewhilstaway.Lessstress, sunshineand being more relaxed helps.

So let’s look at those opportunities whilst awayIt’s a great time to try a refreshing new fitness routine. For example, a simple early morning walk or jog along the beach followed by a couple of lengths in the pool before breakfast, is actually quite refreshing and sets you up for the day. I often try to do a couple extra lengths each day or if with teenagers try to challenge them, as this will make you work harder!

“Aqua Gym” is often heard being shouted (Aqua Aerobics to you and I), but this is a completely different workout on your muscles and is very safe (as long as you can swim) and low impact.

So if you are a habitual jogger then try this and give your joints a week offAny class being offered should be tried as this might give you a sample of something new, which you can continue on your return home.Alternatively if you want to take equipment with you, then resistance bands, water weights dumbbell’s (which can inflated on holiday) are a good option and will give you a great workout. These usually come with a mini workout guide, so you have no excuses!

TOP TIPS1. Write down everything that’s important in your life for increased immunity. Positive emotions will make you less likely to become ill.

2. Having a mug of something warm and milky before bedtime will help you sleep longer, thus a better you the next day.

3. Just 40g of chocolate per day can ease emotional stress.

Garden SceneBy Joseph Whitehead www.gardenwiseadvice.com

With Spring well under way April can be, shall we say, a rather a busy month! A key time for sowing vegetables and annual flowers both in the greenhouse and direct in the warming soil, our lawns are thrusting skywards and at this time of year the weeds are often out competing with everything else! But I love it now the garden is alive once again and holidays beckon.

Holiday TimeTo leave our treasured gardens all alone to fend for themselves can be cause for much concern. While my back is turned will armies of slugs or squadrons of pigeons lay waste to all that’s green, and what’s left may wilt away under the summer sun? It can be a worry so here are a few things we can do to help things tick over while we enjoy our time away.

• Mulchplantsthatneedadditionalwateringwithagoodlayerofgarden compost to seal in any moisture around their roots.

• Groupplantsinpotstogether, theywillhelptoprotecteachotherandreduce moisture loss from their foliage by increasing the humidity around them, also move them to a shady corner or north wall.

I can’t say I’m a great fan of the five door Delta’s exterior

profile though – it looks a little too bulbous at the rear for

my taste. That said, I’ve seen worse looking new motors

on the road and, for the price (just over £19,000), you get

a lot of car for the cash; everything is well padded and the

controls are smooth to operate. Luxury touches such as a

leather clad steering wheel, a refrigerated compartment

and privacy glass do make you feel that the Delta is a step

up from the average hatchback.

The interior is roomy enough for four and, because the rear

seats can recline 25 degrees backwards, your passengers

are also offered impressive comfort options. But the

boot is a letdown. It’s deep but not quite wide enough to

easily fit in a folded up pushchair. I should know – I tried

to load my little kids’ paraphernalia into the boot, and it

was a tighter squeeze than I’d hoped for. Never mind, in all

other respects this fairly unusual looking car does the job

of carting everyone around in relative style well. And it’s

different from other vehicles in its sector, such as the VW

Golf or Ford Focus. It’s economical too; on average, you can

squeeze around 60 mpg out of the tank.

With a 0-62 mph gallop of 10.7 seconds the Chrysler, mated

to a 1.6 MultiJet turbo diesel engine, is not going to burn

much rubber - but it doesn’t feel underpowered. In fact the

222 lb/ft of pulling power allows this car to tow a load of

up to 1300 kg (braked). That’s not bad for a hatchback with

executive airs. The oil-burner can sound a little less refined

than some new diesel cars on the market, but this is only at

start up and things under the Delta’s bonnet quieten down

once you get rolling.

THIS IS a comfortable car. During

my time with the Chrysler Delta I

drove it on all sorts of roads -

motorways, A roads, B roads, farm

tracks–you name it. Afterwards,

I always felt free from aches and

that ‘numb bum’ sensation you can

get after long stretches behind

the wheel.

On the safety side of things, the mid-sized Chrysler has won

a European New Car Assessment Programme (EuroNCAP)

five star crash safety rating. This is thanks to six airbags

fitted as standard (front, window and curtain bags on both

sides), and five three-point safety belts, with load limiters

and pretensioners fitted to the front seats. In addition to

that, the Delta is fitted with some pioneering electronic

systems to make life at the wheel enjoyable yet very safe.

Prime among these is the Absolute Handling System. This

is an amalgamation of various existing technologies such

as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill Holder to ensure

perfect hill starts every time, Anti Slip Regulation (ASR)

which uses brake and engine control to optimise traction

at any time, and a system which cuts in to ensure engine

torque isn’t interrupted if a swift down change is needed

during a climb.

Along with its smaller sister, the new Chrysler Ypsilon,

the Delta marks the resurgence of Chrysler Group LLC,

which was formed in 2009 as a strategic alliance with

Fiat. Chrysler’s portfolio contains some of Europe’s

most recognisable vehicles, including the 300C saloon

and top-selling Grand Voyager MPV. Now with the help

of Fiat’s experience and knowledge in the small and

medium-sized car sectors, Chrysler can infuse compact,

more environmentally friendly models with the luxurious

character traits of its bigger cars.

£Are You Taking the Biggest Risk of All?According to research published by the Nationwide, almost half of parents in the UK are leaving their families at risk because they do not have any life cover in place and over three-quarters, have no protection against the impact of a critical illness. It is a sad fact that whilst most of us are quite happy to insure our car, our house, our travel arrangements – and even our mobile phones – to their full value, few of us take quite as much care over our health and loved ones.

The following questions may help you to start thinking about

what is most important:
