Local couple, Rita and Geoff Fowler, recently

visited their charity project in Mgongeni,

Kenya, and returned feeling pleased with its

progress. Nursery teachers in the school

have been trained to help the children

learn through play and to keep assessment

records to track their progress.

Geoff met with the director of youth sport for

the region who has chosen the school as one

of his three projects to support and one of the

things they discussed was providing a boxing

ring for the Eastern province. He also spoke to

reporters from local media to try and cultivate

interest in youth provision.

Women’s groups have also been established

allowing questionnaires to be circulated to

establish women’s healthcare awareness

to help plan further preventative medicine

training.

To learn more or to offer support, please

contact Rita 01778 341855 or Geoff

01778 348696 or visit their website

MUSTARD SEED PROJECT UPDATE Anne Smart is a Professional Associate of the Society for All Artists and

has been a member for many years. When she moved to Lincolnshire from

Cornwall some seven years ago she looked for a local branch of the SAA

(Society for All Artists) there was none - so she started one herself.

The Group has ten members and meets each Tuesday in the Community

Room, Exeter Close, Deeping St.James - 1.30pm - 4.30pm. Membership is

limited by the size of the room and there is a waiting list.

The members are very lively and always interested to try new techniques

and explore different media. A high standard of art is produced and it

gets better each year. The exhibition on the weekend of 26 & 27 May will

be their fourth and new work is always guaranteed by the rule that only

one painting may be submitted by the artist that has been shown in the

previous exhibition.

HARLEY DAZEOver 350 motorcyclists from all over East

Anglia and the Midlands converged on

Harleys Diner in Market Deeping to attend

the 2nd annual Harley Daze charity event

on behalf of the Afghan Heroes.

Bob Broughton, Mayor of Market Deeping joined the

procession of Harley’s as they rumbled into Market Deeping, on his own

Harley Davidson.

For the second year running Harley Daze was blessed with fantastic

weather and that brought the public out in force and an estimated crowd

of over 600 local residents enjoyed a superb afternoon of traditional

American food and beer as they listened to a wide range of music.

The days combined total funds raised between Harleys Diner staff

and the Afghan Heroes volunteers came to £920.00.

WEST END WILDCATS PERFORM TO THOUSANDS AT ROYAL

ALBERT HALLOn Sunday 8 April, 54 children from Stamford and Peterborough took to London to perform in one of the country’s most prestigious theatres.

The West End Wildcats are 54 children aged 5-18 years who are part of Wildcats Theatre School. They have already picked up numerous awards and accolades for their performances which combine originality and quality with inclusion and enjoyment, where every child is given an opportunity to shine and perform to the best of their abilities.

So far they have scooped the winners trophy at Her Majesty’s Theatre, London in a competition in January 2011 and were runners up in the grand final in December 2011. Alongside performing in London they have showcased their work locally at events and festivals and are booked to perform at Stamford Festival this June.

After months of preparation the Wildcats travelled to London on Sunday to perform a dance routine to a medley from ‘Dreamgirls’.

Students from Peterborough

Regional College have been

lending a helping hand at

Sacrewell Farm & Country

Centre this Spring, under the

guidance of course leader

Stuart Bish. As part of a

project to rejuvenate one

of the Farm’s hedges, the

trainees have been learning

the traditional skill of hedge-

laying.

Long before barbed wire and netting, the technique of hedge-laying was

developed to create a living barrier to enclose farm animals. Left to grow

unhindered, hedges can become gappy at the bottom, and invasive shrubs

such as elder, brambles and ivy can take over. Hedge-laying encourages

the development of shoots from the base so that the hedge forms a dense

barrier. This is good for beneficial insects, which in turn attracts birds and

small mammals. Work is undertaken during the winter months when the

hedge is dormant and wildlife are less

likely to be disturbed.

STAMFORD SHOESTRING

THEATREStamford Shoestring Theatre’s summer delight is a first for the company: an Australian play, Life After George, by award-winning writer Hannie Rayson.

Peter George, charismatic academic, class warrior and lover, is dead. Attempting to work together to arrange his funeral, his three wives and daughter are forced to confront many uncomfortable insights about themselves and their lives both in and out of his shadow. From the student unrest in the late 60’s to the rampant consumerism of the 90’s, the play is a witty, wry and perceptive look at social changes.

The Exeter Arms was lovingly

renovated and restored a couple of

years ago. It has the most beautiful

patio, walled in from the ample

amount of car park, leading into a

bright and sunny orangery. This is

then connected to the main pub, all

decorated out with old wooden tables,

mismatch chairs, antiques and quirky

bits and pieces. It has 6 ensuite

bedrooms as well so ideal if you’re

visiting Stamford or having family

coming to visit.

The Exeter Arms is well known for its

“special occasion” fine dining menu,

but did you know they do everyday

pub grub too? Sausage and mash, fish

and chips and their delicious burgers

are an absolute treat, or how about a

fresh stone baked pizza with choice of

toppings? And you must try the ‘Burger

and Pint’ menu for £11 (Glass of wine

for ladies), perfect after a big shopping

spree or long walk with Rover (who

is allowed in the bar and the garden

might I add). Even the everyday meals

are of the highest standard, so yes, the

sausages are handmade and the burger

is Burghley Park venison, you have no

need to fear the typical pub grub menu

here as nasty limp lettuce and greasy

cold chips are NOT on the menu. The

LARK ENERGY RENEWS INVESTORS IN ENVIRONMENT SPONSORSHIP

COMMUNITY

Bourne-based Lark Energy, part of the Larkfleet

Group, has announced its renewed sponsorship of a

prestigious environmental accreditation scheme for

businesses in the Eastern region.

The Investors in the Environment scheme gives businesses

a practical framework for reducing waste and energy use. It

is being delivered by Peterborough Environment City Trust,

in partnership with Peterborough Chamber of Commerce,

Opportunity Peterborough, Greater Peterborough Partnership

and Peterborough City Council.

The scheme insists that measurable environmental

savings are made before accreditation is awarded. Over

600 businesses have pledged their support for the scheme

with almost 20 per cent of them already having achieved or

working towards accreditation.

Lark Energy was a major sponsor of the scheme last year

and is renewing its sponsorship to help finance Investors in

the Environment for a further year.

An age heralded as liberating female fashion - with shorter-hemlines, figure-hugging fabrics, outfits that did not discriminate against size, and that certain je ne sais quoi that has since characterized the notion of elegance and sophistication – the 1950s are once again embracing the catwalks with models sashaying down the runways at Jill Sander, Louis Vuitton and Gucci, to name but a few.

Yet, looking back at fashion trends, it appears that many styles have never truly left our fashion-consciousness.

The chemise dress was, and still remains, the epitome of feminine class. Straight cut and without a defined waist, it allowed the woman to decide what part of her waist she wanted to define by tying the dress with a belt, thereby being a style that would flatter most figures. Marks and Spencer’s and Warehouse have recently produced a range of chemise dresses in everything from oriental to candy-stripe prints, and at reasonable prices.

Fur also became a status symbol in the 50s, but as it was only affordable for the rich, a whole new enterprise for imitation fur opened up to cater to the increasing demand.

Alongside this, animal print became increasingly fashionable, the long-lasting popularity of which can still be seen in the tribal fashion trends each summer. Other prints which made a statement in the mid-century, but which still remain are checks and florals; tartan and gingham are still hugely popular (Topshop and New Look have reinvented them to form their current interpretation of the ‘Grunge’ trend in the form of shirts, skirts and summer shorts) and floral prints remain a huge thumbs-up on any style meter.

The 1940s and 50s redefined fashion in a revolutionary way which is still being seen today; on the high street, Topshop, River Island and Marks and Spencer’s have their fingers on the fashion button with cigarette pants, pencil skirts, round-neck blouses in pretty pastels (a la ‘Grease: The Movie’) and cocktail dresses to die for. For a real taste of the 50s, though, check out ‘Vivien of Holloway’ online which stocks amazingly beautiful 50s-style dresses. So, this season, embrace your inner glamour-puss, pour yourself a Manhattan, and remember: vive la 50s!

Charlotte Chorley

Back to the future: the mid-century

modern is reinvented...

With the likes of ‘Mad Men’ and

‘Upstairs Downstairs’ gracing our

television screens with a flurry of

enviable glamour, the eyes of the

fashion world turned to the past –

the 1940s and 50s to be exact.

Salon which is newly located above

Antony James Hairdressers on Cowgate

to indulge myself with a luxurious Gel Toes Pedicure

with Nadia.

The salon décor was beautiful and relaxing, I

thoroughly enjoyed the luxurious massage pedicure

chairs and that was even before the treatment

began. The 75 minute treatment includes; soak,

cuticle work, lower leg exfoliation, hard skin removal,

lower leg and foot massage and a file and shape

with gel toes. There was such a huge collection of

the colour gels I found it hard to choose, after much

debate I went with the gold sparkle gel. My feet felt

smooth and my toes looked amazing and it lasts 6-8

weeks. I’ll definitely go back again...

It’s May and officially the beginning

of summer, time to get those little

dresses out of the closet - which

also means getting your legs out too.

After they have been hidden away for

so many months, it seems cruel to

expose them to the elements.

To be sure you feel confident about

showing them off to the unsuspecting

world, you really should opt for a

spray tan..... a spray tan gives you

enough colour to take away the bluish

tinge and makes you look healthy and

radiant.

Essence of Beauty in Stamford have

bought in an exclusive brand of instant

spray tan called Karora, which is

available in selected London Salons.

Karora is made from natural and

organic ingrediants, it gives a rich

golden tan that is long lasting and has

a perfect fade without the awful faux

tan smell. It has moisturising and skin

firming qualities, amazing aromatic

melon and sweet orange fragrance

but none of the harmful parabens,

chemicals and synthetic dyes and

best of all it is cruelty free.

UNDERSTANDING ANXIETY AND PANIC ATTACKS

Anxiety and panic attacks are the mind and body’s response

to a perceived threat and the activation of the ‘fight or flight’

response. Anxiety will be generated by how a person thinks

and responds to their view of themselves, their life and the

situations that find themselves in. Whilst experiencing a level

of anxiety when we undertake something important, new or

different is relatively normal…. Extreme and/or sustained

levels of anxiety can have a serious impact on the person’s

mental, emotional and physical health and well-being.

Generalised anxiety is any form of anxiety that is persistent

and/or excessive about things that have happened in the past

or may or may not happen in the future(anticipatory anxiety)

Therefore, generalised anxiety is created is created/magnified

by their thoughts, they are consumed by worries and thoughts

about the past, present & future.

Panic attacks is an intense and sudden rush of symptoms, the

feeling can be so severe, that the sufferer can feel that they are

having a heart attack; however many sufferers will be unaware

of the reason of their first panic attack, it is fairly common for

the first panic attack to happen as a delayed response to the

pressures experienced months or even years before. Equally

the first panic attack can happen in the midst of an intense

period of stress or shortly afterwards, the bottom line is that at

some point the volcano will erupt…it just depends how much

heat has been applied to it and for how long!

Anxiety and panic attacks can be triggered by a host of factors:

• Sustainedperiodsofstressorillness

• Aresponselinkedtoaphobiaoracutestressdisorder

• Supressingorcontrollingofemotions

• Majorlifechangesorthecontinuedavoidanceofchange

• Atraumaticevent,loss,bereavementorseparation

• Feelingsofworthlessness

• Feelingsofnotbeingincontrol,unabletocopeor

helplessness

• Beingstrongforothersattheexpenseofone’sownneeds

Anxiety & panic attacks can be a ‘cry for help’ from the

unconscious mind for the individual to change their own

lifestyle. Here, at Peterborough Hypnotherapy, I can work

with you to identify what your fears and worries are and

to rebalance your life so that you can enjoy a more relaxed

Garden SceneBy Joseph Whitehead www.gardenwiseadvice.com

A gentle month I’ve always felt, the last days of spring. But beware if the last few years are anything to go by, May can have a sting in its delicate tail in the form a late frost or two. So a little caution may be prudent when deciding when to hang out your hanging baskets or plant out those tomatoes.

JOBS FOR THE MONTH

HEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTYHOME & GARDEN

Dear Joe of Gardenwise,

I have started working on my garden for the Summer, but with the hosepipe ban in force I am concerned about what new plants or shrubs I should pick.

From Katie, Lincolnshire

Dear Katie,

With the threat of hosepipe bans, and successive dry seasons you are right

to be considering how to adapt to dry conditions and the sensible decision

is to think about choosing more drought tolerant plants for you garden.

To give any new planting a good chance of settling in well, make sure they

get well watered in immediately after planting and mulch the new plantings

to seal in any moisture.

First understand your gardens situation, its aspects, pH and soil type, so

you can pick plants that are suited to your garden. When choosing plants

that will cope better with a dry summer you could consider plants that

originate from areas of low rain fall for example the Mediterranean or New

Zealand but check that are also hardy to our cold winters - like Lavenders,

Phlomis, Olearia’s, and Eryngium. Colour can be gained from the use

of annuals like Californian poppy (Escholtzia), Love-in-a Mist, (Nigella

damascena) and corn flower (Centaurea). Evergreen shrubs, with their

waxy moisture retaining leaves are also worth considering.

Kitchen garden• Keep horticultural fleece handy to protect any delicate crops.• Sow main crop sweet corn, pumpkins and squashes in modules.• Every two weeks sow short rows of lettuce, beetroot, spring onion and radish.• Look out!....for small green caterpillars of gooseberry sawfly.

Ornamental garden• The Chelsea chop is all about how to manage strong growing herbaceous perennials that are difficult to stake and fall apart, for example Sedums, Anthemis and Achillea. At the time of the Chelsea flower show, cut back these perennials by half. • Take soft wood cuttings (6-8cm) from your favourite shrubs, cutting each shoot just below a leaf joint. Ideally insert them into free draining cutting compost made of 50/50 compost and grit. Bottom heat, high humidity and plenty of sunlight are 3 important factors for successful rooting.

REVIEW

FUNDiese l HatchbacksBY ROB TAYLOR

Can a warm diesel hatchback ever catch - or even dispatch - its equivalent petrol hot hatch? Rob Taylor finds out.

The man driving behind me in the Nissan 350Z is clearly

disgruntled. Things have not yet degenerated to rude hand

gestures or hostile horn honking, but after a number of

abortive attempts to overtake, he is more animated than

a cartoon. Right now, he is Wile E. Coyote and I am The

Road Runner.

May 2012 | Email: [email protected]

Page 33: The Community Scene - May 2012

33Telephone: 01780 783613 | May 2012

And the cause of his chagrin? A little diesel hatchback -

Mini’s new Cooper SD - which, on these tight, demanding

and technical B-roads, is more than a match for his over-

endowed monument to OPEC.

As the road straightens he does finally overtake - is he

shocked by the ‘D’ badge affixed to the rear I wonder - but

not before the Mini has made its point.

It’s on a mission to disprove the well-worn notion that

frugality and fun are mutually exclusive. Also along for the

ride and itching to upset the status quo are the Seat Ibiza FR

CR TDI and the Citroen DS3 1.6 HDI DSport.

All three of these sporty diesel hatchbacks promise fun

and frolics, monumental fuel economy - over 60mpg - and

release less harmful gas than their average owner after

a lunch of baked beans on toast: just under 120g/km. All

well and good, but just how great a disparity exists between

official fuel economy figures and those achieved with some

vigorous and fancy-free driving? After all fun is fast, isn’t it?

Beep, beep!

So I hopped into my Acme Corporation time machine, set

the dials to 1965 - when fuel cost pennies and the roads

were clear - and unsurprisingly landed in the depths of

Shropshire’s cow country, eager to put them to the test. And

also determined to show the onlooking cattle just how far the

diesel engine has evolved from the example spluttering away

in the bowels of Farmer Palmer’s tractor.

The Mini SD faces the toughest test, not only because it must

deflect the usual sneer from petrol-heads, but it must also

answer the expectations awoken in anyone familiar with the

illustrious ‘S’ badge too. ‘S’ must indeed stand for ‘super’

and while the SD is not quite ‘super-dooper’, it doesn’t

disappoint. It is without doubt the car to beat in this class.

The 2 litre 143bhp engine propels the turbocharged style

icon from 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds and rides a torque wave

of 225lb ft on to a top speed of 134mph. It is a thoroughly

advanced engine too: it isn’t especially noisy at low speed

or start-up, which is good, since it insists on deploying stop/

start technology at every turn.

The pretty and stylish Citroen DS3 makes do without such

cleverness and despite appearing the most avant-garde it’s

relatively old school, making do with an ethos of less weight,

Page 34: The Community Scene - May 2012

34 May 2012 | Email: [email protected] 2012 | Email: [email protected]

less power. Weighing 1050kg, it gets just 110bhp and 199lb

ft of torque from its 1.6 litre engine, but that’s all it needs

to hit 62mph from rest in 9.8 seconds and a top speed of

118mph. However, its engine feels less refined, having more

lag and sounding a little crude.

A lack of firepower is of no concern for the Seat Ibiza. Styling

by Machismo, prodigious torque of 236lb ft, 0-62mph in

8.2 seconds and 143bhp speak clearly of its intentions. It

certainly feels quick and that’s good, as adding a Formula

Racing badge to any Seat is a bold statement.

This three door model has stiffened suspension and XDS - a

‘virtual’ limited slip differential - so it really hangs on in the

bends. Predictably though, the ride is hard on your spine if

not your wallet.

And if the gulf in interior cabin quality between the Mini and

the Citroen is evident it isn’t glaring. The price difference

is however: the as-tested SD costs £23,830; the DS3 is

£18,186 and the FR is £18,750. This matters a great deal.

So too do the actual fuel economy returns I achieved:

SD, 52.9mpg; FR, 53.8mpg; DS3, 60.7mpg. The DS3 also

scores well in terms of driving range (courtesy of its 48 litre

fuel tank), since in the real-world nothing stifles progress

like refuelling. Man in 350Z take note.

And so to the matter of fun. Do these oil-burners excite the

motoring juices like their petrol-powered siblings? Well, not

quite, but the margins have never been tighter.

Riding a relatively small band of torque is no substitute

for seeing the revs climb to the top-end, but as a total

package, a Jack of all trades, these cars are outstanding:

a true motoring panacea. Accessible low-down torque

makes overtaking a cinch, a well-engineered chassis and

- particularly in the SD - accomplished handling make for

almost all of the thrills and none of the exorbitant fuel bills.

You’ll be laughing all the way to the bank instead of crying

all over the petrol tank. And nothing is more fun and

satisfying than that. I know, as I last saw the man in the

350Z parked up at the pumps.

After all, The Road Runner always wins.

Jubilee PlansTo mark 60 years of The Queen’s reign the

Diamond Jubilee will take place in 2012. The

celebrations will centre around an extended

weekend in 2012 on 2, 3, 4 and 5 June.

The Queen came to the throne on 6 February 1952 and her coronation

took place on 2 June 1953.

She celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 and her Golden Jubilee (50 years)

in 2002.

The website www.thediamondjubilee.org is a useful resource for history, images,

games and a great way to send a message to the Queen for her Jubilee year!

The Queens Diamond Jubilee Tour started in March and runs through until the 25 July.

www.2012queensdiamondjubilee.com lists the route.

National events are celebrations can be found at www.direct.gov.uk/diamondjubilee

The Big LunchThe fourth annual Big Lunch will

fall on the same weekend as the

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. So

anyone who would like to celebrate and commemorate the Queen’s 60 year reign can

do so by holding a Big Jubilee Lunch! Some 10 million people came out in sunny 1977

to celebrate the Silver Jubilee.

The beauty of The Big Lunch is that people themselves decide everything about their

own event. The venue can be wherever you want or have space, the theme whatever

you fancy - food and people are the key ingredients. Quite simply, The Big Lunch want

to get as many people as possible to sit down and have lunch with their neighbours

on the first Sunday in June. After all The Big Lunch is all about community, friendship

and fun!

To explore Zambia is to step back into Africa as it was meant to be. Often described

as the ‘real’ Africa, Zambia has been relatively untouched by humans and is famed for

its huge protected wilderness areas, its natural landscapes and, arguably, the most

diverse range of animals and birds in Africa. It also has some of the friendliest people

you will find on the continent with over 73 different tribes living in harmony.

Set on the high plateau of the tropical belt of south-central Africa, 1300 metres above

sea level, Zambia boasts 19 National Parks including two of the largest in Africa in

Luangwa and Kafue; two of Africa’s great rivers in the Zaire and the Zambezi; the vast

man-made ‘inland sea’ of Lake Kariba; and the magnificent Victoria Falls. The capital is

Lusaka, the fastest growing city in central Africa and a stepping stone for discovering

the country.

The mighty Zambezi River runs through the country and its name, along with Victoria

Falls, evoke images of the wilds of Africa. Livingstone, near Victoria Falls, has much to

interest the visitor including fascinating museums and a number of cultural villages.

The awe-inspiring Victoria Falls are known locally as “Mosi-oa-Tunya” or the “Smoke

that Thunders” and this is fitting for the Zambezi dramatically plunges some 120 metres

into a vast gorge creating a spray that rises over 500 metres into the sky.

Zambia is the land of

the legendary African

walking safari,

the awe-inspiring

Victoria Falls, the

River, breathtaking

lakes, abundant

wildlife, and raw,

all in one friendly

The Lower Zambezi area is refuge to an

abundance of wildlife & birdlife and offers

various styles of safari including walking and

canoe safaris, which enable one to get close

to the wildlife in its natural habitat.

The size of Wales, Kafue is one of the world’s

largest National Parks. It has an amazing

diversity of eco-systems and a profusion

of wildlife and is definitely one of the most

interesting and rewarding parks in Africa.

Luangwa National Park offers some of the

best game viewing in Africa and provides the

rare opportunity of guided walking safaris.

The Luangwa Valley forms part of the Great

Rift Valley with the valley floor nestling some

800 metres below the surrounding plateau.

The valley is dissected by the impressive

profusion of wildlife. North Luangwa is less

well-known but offers a unique wilderness

experience. Primarily a woodland park it is

renowned for its huge herds of buffalo as well

as a great variety of other mammals.

Other parks of note include Nyika National

Park and Nsumbu, which boasts 180km of

Lake Tanganyika’s shoreline.

For the active or adrenalin-junkie the country

offers an array of exciting activities including

bungee jumping off Victoria Falls Bridge,

white-water rafting or canoeing down the

Zambezi, elephant back trails, horse-back

safaris, quad biking and scuba diving at Lake

Tanganyika.

Accommodation across the country is of a

high standard with an excellent selection

of luxury safari camps and lodges in all of

the major parks. Clean and comfortable

rustic camps are generally used on walking

safaris and in Lusaka and Victoria Falls there

are hotels ranging from 3 to 5-star deluxe.

The best time to visit is between May and

October, although in the green season (March

& April) the landscape comes alive following

the rains, making for a spectacular array of

colours and many migrant birds also arrive.

Zambia is wild but inviting and a must for

any serious safari enthusiasts.

nominated for three World Travel Awards.

The World Travel Awards serves to acknowledge, reward and

“We are delighted with the three nominations, which we feel

reflects all the hard work and dedication put into Stapleford

Park by the team over the last 12 months. If we continue to

secure the support from our guests in voting for these awards,

we would hope to be considered as a strong contender.”

The Hunger GamesSuzanne Collins Scholastic £7.99

Blockbuster film! Katniss Everdeen is a survivor. She has to be; she’s representing her District, number 12, in

the 74th Hunger Games in the Capitol, the heart of Panem, a new land that rose from the ruins of a post-apocalyptic North America. To punish citizens for an early rebellion, the rulers require each

district to provide one girl and one boy, 24 in all, to fight like gladiators in a futuristic arena. The event is broadcast like reality TV, and the winner returns with wealth for his or her district.

Sounds familiar? It’s what an awful lot of people think. The truth is rather different, however. If you haven’t made a Will, then the decision is out of your (and your sister’s, mother’s or best friend’s) hands, because Social Services will make the decision as to who will be the guardian of your children until they reach the age of 18. For those people who are not married to the other parent of the children, it gets even worse, because the father is not automatically given guardianship of his own children should the mother die. And there’s such a simple way to avoid this; make a Will!

The key decision to make is who, if you die, should look after your children and carry out your wishes for their care. Even if you haven’t got many worldly goods, your most valuable asset is your children, and a Will ensures they go where you want them to. It obviously ensures that all your other assets go where you want them to as well.

Guardians should ideally be of a similar age to the parents. If appointing older guardians, then make sure you review their suitability at regular intervals.

Unless the guardians are a couple, do not appoint joint guardians. Typically appointing both grandmothers is a recipe for disputes. On the face of it they get on, but would they if they had joint guardianship of the children? Whom do they live with? What type of discipline do they get? Which church do they go to? The list is endless. The last thing you want is to risk your children being the centre of a dispute when they are already upset.

Appointing guardians who live abroad, can cause problems as permission will be required to take them abroad and that might not be granted. Just because a person is a guardian to children, the children will not automatically be allowed to live in the guardian’s country (e.g. USA). Nor will the guardian be automatically allowed to live in England unless they are from the European Union.

One final point – before you take the big step of appointing guardians for your children, make sure they want the job and are prepared to look after them.

upright in a little water, just as you would for flowers. When you are ready to eat, put them in boiling water and cook for a few minutes until they are tender. Eat straight away with lots of butter and salt.

Some ideas;1. Try them dipped in soft boiled eggs instead of toasted soldiers.

2. How about in pasta with green house tomatoes, rocket, mozzarella and olive oil?

3. Antipasti with olives, Parma ham and crusty bread.

4. Wrap the stems in Parma ham and bake with fresh figs served with a blue cheese salad.

5. On toast with poached eggs
