Well done to Sylvia White and her daughter Elaine for their sponsored walk in memory of Nicky, which raised so much money for Cystic Fibrosis. With Remembrance Day coming up, many thanks to Pat Arthars for her sterling work raising money and putting up on Chickerell’s lamp posts the lovely poppies; they make such a lovely feature around the town. Once again the Remembrance Service in Chickerell will be a joint service between St Mary’s and Chickerell Methodist Church. Many people attended last year, including horses, marking the loss of many animals during the First World War. People do complain about not seeing the police in the village but they have been coming to the Willowbed once a month at a set time to discuss problems but have not had a huge response so far. Do go along to the November date (see front page diary for place & time) if you have any issues to talk to them about. Over the last 20 years many people have had children attend Ducklings Pre-school and have got to know Sue, who is now leaving. We send her our best wishes and good luck. And finally, it’s that time again; come on all you shepherds and angels, don’t forget your rehearsals for the Nativity Tableau at St Mary’s on December 22nd. See St Mary’s news for more details. John Dean

POPPY APPEAL & REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY IN CHICKERELL: From Pat Arthars, local Poppy Appeal Organiser: “Remembrance Sunday is on November 10th. Thanks to the support of our local businesses and community areas, poppies, lapel badges, bracelets etc are available from:- Turks Head, Lugger & Victoria Inns, Chickerell & Charlestown Post Offices, the library, pharmacy, hairdressers, St.Mary’s Church & the council offices. A big thank you to Spirit of Chickerell and all who supported the tombola at the Village Cafe on 19th October. Thanks also to all who donated to the Lamp Post Poppies providing a vivid Remembrance in Chickerell again this year. Your support for the work of the British Legion is very much appreciated.” (Editor’s note: See churches page for Remembrance Day service information & commemoration in North Square)*******************************************************************************************SPONSORED WALK SUCCESS: From Sylvia White: “A few months ago I put a plea for sponsorship in aid of Cystic Fibrosis in memory of our son Nicky White who died of this dreadful condition at the age of 15. I was to walk 100km along the Thames path from Putney Bridge to Henley on Thames over two days. Well, I did it! It was tough; physically I was not exhausted, but it was my feet that suffered, finishing with more tape and blister plasters than foot showing and huge swollen ankles. The best and most poignant moment during the walk was when a young lady of about 20 came up to me and asked ‘are you walking to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis?’ When I answered that I was, tears filled her eyes as she hugged me and said ‘Oh thank you, because you are walking, I can walk.’ I may have walked in memory of our son Nicky, but it was for the likes of that young lady.I wish to thank everyone that sponsored me or helped me in any way, from the wonderful words of encouragement to being chauffeur; Thank you Ian. But the biggest thanks goes to Elaine, who walked with me every step of the way. Thank you Elaine! With this fantastic support, I have managed to raise an amazing £1432.67. Thank you all.”*******************************************************************************************PLEASE HELP THE ANIMALS: For our friends and residents of Chickerell and Charlestown: Just a reminder we will be collecting again this year food, biscuits, toys and towels etc., for the rescued animals at Margaret Green Animal Rescue. We had a lovely response last year, very much appreciated. It can be a guinea pig up to even a horse that needs the Margaret Green charity. Also we can collect, no matter how small – it all mounts up. We will collect, or you can drop off, clothes and bric-a-brac too. We will put a reminder in next month’s Contact just to jog memories as we know it is a busy month for everyone. Thank you so much.

CHICKERELL UTD FC – The Stalls, East Street. At our recent AGM Jim (Bill) Pitney was elected to the committee as our new secretary with his wife Nat acting as his personal P.A. A big thank you was expressed to Tony Elliott for all his sterling years as our retiring secretary; however, he has agreed to remain as the club’s treasurer. I am glad to report that, in his current post, he has managed to secure a football grant to assist in our training costs for the coming season – good work Tony!!

On the subject of club funds, it was disappointing to see a poor turn out for our recent race evening, despite a significant amount of advertising. All those present enjoyed a good evening that raised some much needed funds, thanks to Liam Coles for his role as MC and to Arron Murphy who acted as the projectionist. A special mention goes to Mickey Legg, who gave a virtuoso performance on his mouth organ to celebrate Nat’s birthday. On the football front, both teams have nine points after five league matches, with the first team currently in 4th

place and the Reserves holding a respectable 8th place. The Senior Cup tie against local rivals Portland Reserves ended in a close fought 3-2 defeat. Please note that all future fixtures will be 2pm Kick Offs, so make sure you get to The Stalls early to secure your place and get your half time refreshments from the Bigman. We are holding a pre-Christmas Bingo at the Willowbed Hall on Friday 29th November, doors open 6.45pm eyes down 7.30pm; so please get this date in your diaries and come along to support your local football team.

NEWS REPORT FROM OCTOBER MONTHLY MEETING OF CHICKERELL TOWN COUNCILIn the public half hour prior to the meeting, there was a delegation of people owning businesses and properties accessed by Lynch Lane. All expressed concerns over increasing numbers of vehicles being left on Lynch Lane, many of which they say have not moved for months, blocking access points, with cars being left on pavements and across bus stops, affecting visibility and causing congestion plus creating rubbish and flood issues as the sides of the road cannot be accessed for cleaning. The manager of Haven, Littlesea, the holiday park that currently has 300,000 visitors a year and sits at the end of Lynch Lane, warned he felt it was only a matter of time before someone was injured. After listening to and discussing the concerns in the meeting, councillors said Dorset Council, the Highways Authority, must be contacted along with Dorset Police, as apart from the dangers to highway users, it was a situation detrimental to businesses and residents in the area.Other road issues: The town council had also been contacted regarding issues over parked cars and speeding vehicles along Putton Lane making it difficult to cross the road safely by the Willowbed. There was also a separate request for more double yellow lines on Cambridge Road in the Granby Industrial Estate.Dorset Council Traffic Regulation Orders were also noted to cover repositioning the road humps in Nottington Lane and changing the speed limit before the double bends coming into Chickerell at Coldharbour. It was felt the 30mph limit should be extended to the whole of Coldharbour right down to the Nottington boundary in the light of the planned housing development for this area. *******************************************************************************************COUNCILLOR SURGERY: John Worth's Dorset Councillor’s surgery will take place at Chickerell Community Library from 10am to 12noon on Tuesday 19th November. “If you are unable to attend and wish to talk to me, call 07787229052 and I will be happy to help.”

Here I am…..Jeremy BradingRector of St Mary’s, Chickerell, & Holy Trinity, Fleet.

Welcome to our feature asking residents about their dreams growing up; whether they are glad to be where they are now –and, of course, what Chickerell means to them. This month it is Jeremy Brading, who apart from being the Church of England Rector for Chickerell and Fleet, is also Priest in charge of St Nicholas, Abbotsbury, St Peter’s, Portesham and St Peter’s, Langton Herring.

As a little boy I proudly wore a jumper with the Space Shuttle on it, but apart from that I don’t recall having a sense of what I wanted to do in life until I was 17. At 17 was when I first felt what I believe to be been God’s call on my life. I guess it could be described as an 'evangelical conversion experience’. Most important for me, was not the experience itself but the sudden, very radical change it had on my life. I can measure the impact. A few days after my experience, I was scheduled to lead a school House Assembly. I stood in the Junior Common room, with 150 boys (some who were older) sitting on lockers all around me. It was a very intimidating situation for me, not least because some of the same boys had been bullying me at my school for several years. Consequently, prior to this important event, I would not have shared my story - even if somebody paid me to! Yet the rest is history. I decided to read Theology at a secular university. The studies were difficult, but far more challenging was the death of my father who died (at 49 years), when I was 19. Over the next seven years I struggled with the Church of England, my belief in God and my conviction that God even existed. Yet throughout this period, the only consistent thing in my life (besides my friends and the odd beer) was the overwhelming sense that I was called to ministry in the Church of England. Twenty years later, here I am: the Church of England Parish Priest for Chickerell and Fleet. My wife and I moved to Chickerell mid 2012, after spending a long period of time living in North West England and Wales. Whilst we miss the people of the north west, we have been made to feel at home very quickly. We are very happy living here in Chickerell, as part of the community. We certainly feel that Chickerell is a safe place to raise our two boys. We also take note that Chickerell, Weymouth and the surrounding area have often been visited as ‘places of healing’. King George III an obvious example, but it makes me feel very fortunate that God has placed my family and I here in Chickerell, to be part of this. In that respect St Mary’s Chickerell, has joined the efforts of local churches by supporting Street Pastors, CAP (Christian debt advocacy), the Food Banks and soon to come, Family Matters. When my wife and I moved here, it was the result of two jobs (one each) that had been advertised nationally. However, prior to applying for either of our current jobs, I had driven down from Bolton to Hillfield Friary near Dorchester, for a five day retreat. Driving through the narrow roads, unfortunately I smashed my near side wing mirror. I needed a temporary repair, so sought out a Halfords in a place that I found on my map, called Dorchester. Unfortunately though I could not find Halfords in Dorchester, but I did see a sign for Weymouth and quite soon after, Chickerell. I thought to myself: ‘there must be a Halfords there, I’ll go there in the car’. As I looked out of the window driving back to Dorchester via the Ridgeway, I distinctly recall saying to myself: ‘it’s really nice down here, Angharad and I must come down here for a holiday’. When we applied for our respective roles, we both felt a very strong sense that we would be coming to live here. Chickerell in that respect, is a place where I feel that I have been sent to, and God has ‘sent’ Chickerell to me. *******************************************************************************************FAIR TRADE IN WEYMOUTH: Did you know about The Bridge Fair Trade shop in Weymouth? It is by Weymouth’s Town Bridge, next to the Chapelhay steps, and it has been trading for two years. Run by the Fairbridge Trust, the shop grew out of a Traidcraft stall in church. Traidcraft remains the biggest supplier but there are other fair trade products from all over the world such as wooden toys from Sri Lanka, handmade cards from Rwanda, hats and bags from Madagascar, recycled aluminium gifts from India and wooden carvings from Bali. The shop also supports charities including the Dorset/Murugi Community Projects and the Diocese of Salisbury Sudan Appeal through selling gifts and cards. The trust says it has a wonderful team of volunteers in the shop, which also has a small upstairs café selling tea and coffee: “The aim of Fairbridge Trust is to support charities working for the relief of poverty, both locally and overseas. Locally we have made donations to The Lantern Trust, MV Freedom and Soulfood.” The shop is open Tuesday – Thursday 10am to 4pm and Friday and Saturday 10am-5pm.*******************************************************************************************DID YOU KNOW THAT: The foundations of Chickerell’s Lugger Inn in West Street date back to ancient times. The pub was badly damaged in a fire in 1912 but was restored. It was altered and added to in the 1930s.

NATURE NOTES: What has been seen in Chickerell

Gardening Notes for NovemberFrosty nights will soon be here and some plants need more protection than others. After herbaceous perennials have been cut back, cover the crowns with a thick layer of mulch – compost or rotted manure. Many southern hemisphere plants do not like being wet in winter, so a protective layer round the roots to keep them dry is essential. Tender plants should be taken into a glasshouse or similar. Tubs that cannot be moved should be wrapped in hessian or bubble wrap to prevent them cracking, and lifted onto feet to allow free drainage.

Tulips should be planted now – at least four inches deep. Tubers of Dahlias can be lifted and dried. Sow varieties of winter-hardy veg now. Bare-rooted Wallflowers and Sweet Williams are available.

Clear leaves from lawns and ponds and make leaf mould. Deciduous shrubs can be pruned after leaf fall, when the shape can be clearly seen. Do not prune evergreens until spring. Before the soil gets too cold, plant bare root trees, shrubs and roses to give them a chance to establish their roots. Borders can be re-arranged too. Grease bands should be wrapped round the trunks of fruit trees to stop over-wintering pests from gaining access. While tidying a garden, be careful to create habitats for wildlife by leaving corners piled with leaves and twigs. Check bonfires carefully for animals before lighting. Put out clean water for birds and mammals. Be sure to keep feeding birds, because they will rely on you.

Carrie Dalby, Wyke Regis Horticultural Society

Growing up in Bournemouth I remember going back to school after the summer holidays and seeing the door into the main building covered in crane-flies. It happened every year and seemed as though summer had stopped dead in its tracks and it was suddenly cool and damp. Since that time I have rarely seen so many crane-flies (also known as daddy-long-legs) until the past few weeks when they started to appear in considerable numbers including around my own front door. Crane-flies are recognisable by their slender bodies and legs – which are weakly attached to the body and easily break off – and because they rest with their wings outstretched. There are, in fact, around 300 crane-fly species in Britain ranging in size and they do like to swarm, often in the evenings, when they can be seen ‘dancing’ up and down just off the ground. This dance is full of males, hoping to attract female crane-flies that they can snatch and whisk away. The larvae of crane-flies can be found in soil or in the debris at the bottom of ponds and streams, so a wet period of weather is just right for them. The damp conditions have also been wonderful for fungi with all sorts of big specimens sprouting up on the edges of the Willowbed field. There are normally some on the field but this year there has been quite a crop. Be aware, however, that some are poisonous, and even edible fungi – which you need to be an expert to spot - can cause poisoning if old or in poor condition so look but avoid touching. The flocks of Goldfinches and Starlings in and around the Willowbed field have been joined now by a small flock of Collared Doves. These pale, buff-grey birds are notable for the narrow, white-edged black bar around the back of their necks and for their distinctive ‘cooing’, which some people find monotonous and irritating. The bird has, however, made remarkable progress in this country. The first official record of a breeding Collared Dove dates back to 1955 and they only started to be seen regularly in the 1960s around trees in parks and gardens as they are not fans of open spaces. The Canada Geese are also back after an absence of some weeks, flying low over Chickerell on their way between The Fleet and Lodmoor in the mornings and evenings. It is still possible, on a rare sunny day, to also see Red Admiral butterflies on the wing. Finally it is not really surprising that in all the rain we have had recently, a toad was spotted by the side of the path that connects Chickerell Primary Academy to the Willowbed field.*******************************************************************************************DID YOU KNOW THAT: Architect Sir Christopher Wren, who famously designed St Paul’s Cathedral in London, which was built of Portland Stone, was also MP for Weymouth for one year? Sir Christopher had control of the quarries at Portland for more than 40 years. There is also another connection between St Paul’s and Weymouth. Sir James Thornhill, who was born in what is now The White Hart pub in Weymouth (by Debenhams) painted the interior of the dome of St Paul’s in London. His work can also be seen in Weymouth as he painted the altar piece in St Mary’s Church, in St Mary Street, Weymouth.

A LOOK BACK TO CONTACT MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 1987: • Chickerell Utd FC was appealing to any old players left in the village to come forward so that they could

‘revive the traditional Boxing Day game between a Veterans XI and the present day squad’. • Country music fans were invited to the Texas Star CMC every two weeks on Saturdays. The bus left Chickerell

at 6.45pm with a £2 fare return.• Applications were invited for the post of clerk to the Chesil Bank Group Parish Council which covered the

parishes of Abbotsbury, Fleet, Langton Herring and Portesham. ‘Salary is 550 pa payable quarterly in arrears. Typewriter provided’.

• Helpers were urgently needed in November 1987 at the Senior Citizens Luncheon Club, which was held every Thursday between 12 and 2pm. ‘The food is brought in ready cooked by the WRVS so you would be required just to serve the food and do the washing up.’

• A Parish Council news report stated that work on improving the Granby Industrial Estate roads would start soon, bringing them ‘up to an adoption standard’.

• Planning applications reported November 1987: Plans to build four flats ‘on waste land between the Fairfield car parking area and Putton Lane. These flats will be part of the Fairfield warden controlled complex. The Parish council has asked for a pedestrian access to be included to link Fairfield with Putton Lane.’ Another plan was from Ryan Homes to build: ‘On the field at the junction of Lower School Hill and Lower Putton Lane. This land has had planning permission for many years and the present proposal is to build 43 houses, 6 bungalows and 10 flats on the field. The estate has been designed to have all the houses facing into the estate as the County Surveyor has said he does not want parking on Lower School Hill but the Parish Council feel this will give the estate a ‘ghetto’ type appearance with all the bathroom windows, down-pipes, washing lines and dustbins facing the road and have therefore asked for the houses to face Lower School Hill and, if necessary, provide a lay-by for parking’.

• The parish council also reported that the ‘Alana’ or ‘Wilcon Homes’ development was now well under way and that the estate name would be ‘Chickerell Downs’ with the proposed street names taken from the novel ‘Moonfleet’ with ‘the suggestions so far Glennie Way, Why Not Way, Elziver Close and Aldebrand Close.’

• Finally the council reported negotiations were taking place regarding buying land for a new cemetery, north of the present churchyard. Planning permission had been granted.

• Contact published a recipe for ‘Bonfire toffee’.
