Many people from Chickerell were shocked to read in the Dorset Evening Echo that their doctors surgery was closing down. Now people are receiving their letters from the CCG saying there are ‘ongoing plans to retain a surgery in Chickerell, as this is a large area of development’. The letter adds the CCG will be ‘able to offer a clearer picture as plans unfold’. There is also to be a drop in session for patients who are concerned at the Willowbed Hall on November 1st. In last month’s issue we asked for help with the production of Contact. As of today, we have had no replies so we are in danger of closing in the New Year. We really need some support; this is a vital form of communication for everyone in the town and its surrounding area. We have been very grateful for financial support from the town council and the Spirit of Chickerell but we need more volunteers to keep us going and to grow with the town.Meanwhile it’s that time of year again for the shepherds to get out their crooks and angels their wings – for the St Mary’s Nativity. See St Mary’s news for details or contact John or Hilary. Next month will be our bumper edition and we will be having extra pages for December/January Contact, so please send your contributions in early to fit it all in! And thanks to Stan for his contribution once again. John Dean

CHICKERELL SURGERY TO CLOSE: It has been announced that Abbotsbury Road Surgery and its branch in Lower Way, Chickerell will close on March 31st, 2019. On the surgery’s website the official notice says it is due to difficulty in recruiting new GPs to replace retiring doctors. The notice says its 9,000 patients should not re-register with another GP practice for now; patients will be sent letters and other GP practices in Weymouth & Portland were ‘developing plans to ensure continuity of primary care services’. Concerned patients are being invited to a drop in event at the Willowbed Hall from 12.30pm - 4.30pm on Thursday November 1st.*******************************************************************************************CHICKERELL CENTENARY THANK YOU: Two silhouettes sponsored by Chickerell Town Council in support of the Royal British Legion campaign to mark the end of the First World War 100 years ago are now on display in front of the town council offices. The silhouettes are of an RAF airman – Chickerell Airfield was founded in 1918 - and a suffragette. It is the centenary of the 1918 Representation of the People Act – Votes for Women; when for the first time, women of property could vote. All British women finally gained the right to vote in 1928. The Town Council hopes to install commemorative bench seats in public spaces later in the year. For more information about the Royal British Legion see www.britishlegion.org.uk*******************************************************************************************BUS CHANGES: The winter timetable for First Bus came into effect at the end of September, ending buses on Sundays. People can opt-in to receive these calls by consenting to be contacted by claims companies when enquiring about settling a claim, or when seeking claims advice. Trading Standards adds: “These new measures together with the strengthened Data Protection Act will curb the number of nuisance calls received by consumers…The Government has already made it easier for regulators to fine those breaching direct marketing rules, by forcing companies to display their number when calling customers and there are increased fines for wrongdoers.” Anyone who feels they have suffered a scam or would like advice on consumer rights can call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 040506.*******************************************************************************************STEPPING INTO NATURE: A new project offering nature based activities to improve health and wellbeing for Dorset’s older people, including those with dementia and their carers, has a lot of activities this November. We are also still collecting bric a brac, clothes etc., through the year. We can always collect – just call 01305 781059 or drop it in to 43 Lower Way, Chickerell. Also to thank the people that have given us items, including towels, throughout the year along with dog and cat food. If any readers could give a packet of biscuits or tinned food for any animal, including for rabbits and hamsters, it would really be appreciated. We will put a reminder in next month’s Contact as we know everyone has a lot on their mind nearer to Christmas.

Thank you all; Rosie, Yvonne and Jess the dog.

We have moulded leaves for our autumnal tree display, learnt new rhymes and made snails with conkers. We have celebrated that ‘dark is exciting’ making space resources and sky splatter paintings. We have used seasonal vegetables to make our own winter soup which we tasted in our snack café with warm bread made by Caroline and butter churned by the Chickadees. For any further information please contact Clare Ash- 01305773103 or [email protected]

A DAY TRIP TO DEVON – by Stan GrovesA recent visit to Dartmoor, at my favourite time of the year, filled me with the same joy as it has always done. I first visited this glorious place in 1959 and I have not missed many years since.Coming in from the south, we arrive at Two Bridges where we park and walk up to Wistman’s Wood – a lovely large stunted growth oak forest. I remember coming here in 1990 with 12 friends in three cars from Charlestown Victory Hall. We were all members of the youth club in the hall just after the Second World War. Leaving here and driving north we observe to the east the vast Bellever Forest and remember how we used to stand on a big rock in the middle of the wood and shout, discovering an amazing echo, louder and longer than our own Echoing Valley at Whitmoor/Langton Manor. After a meal in the Warren House Inn with its log fire, we drive through Postbridge and head for Grimspound where we walk up to the remains of a Bronze Age village. It’s a fascinating place but the hill seems steeper than it used to be. Driving through Widecombe we go up to Bonehill Rocks and Honeybag Tor. While looking down from this great height we see the ‘Cathedral of the Moor’ which is Widecombe Church. We leave here and head for Hound Tor and on that short journey we pass ‘Kitty Jay’s Grave’ at the crossroads. She was buried here many years ago after being in-child out of Wedlock..

The strong oak braves the rudest wind,While, to the breeze as well, The sickly, aged willow falls,

And so the mother fell,Beside the pool the willow bends,

The dew-bent daisy weeps,And where the turfy hillock swells,

The luckless ‘young lady’ sleeps. - John Clare.Late afternoon we turn back and head towards Ashburton, then make a stop at Newbridge and its lovely River Dart. We walk through the woodland and along the river bank towards Holne Chase for half a mile seeing several Dippers but no Kingfishers today. Journeying home late evening I think about my home and John Clare’s lines:

‘Oh native endearments I will not forsake thee,I will not forsake the for sweetest of scenes,

For sweetest of gardens that nature can make me,I will not forsake thee dear valleys and greens,

Though nature never dropped thee a cloud resting mountainThough waterfalls tumble their music so free,Had nature denied me a bush tree or fountain,

Though still would be loved as an Eden by me.***************************************************************************************************

A LOOK BACK TO CONTACT MAGAZINE PUBLISHED IN NOVEMBER 1986• The parish council reported that work has been started on the widening of School Hill and the ‘easing’ of bends

in Putton Lane – as part of BPs drilling operations at South Buckland.• Chickerell Methodist Church was seeking singers for its choir as it had been ‘some years since we had a choir

or group of singers in the village’.• Two parishioners from St Mary’s were set to go to Salisbury in November 1986 to present more than £350

donated for the Salisbury Cathedral spire repair appeal. HRH the Prince of Wales was to be in attendance. • The youth club management committee reported that foundations and drains for the new youth centre were in

place. More volunteers were asked to come forward to staff the new building. *******************************************************************************************

NATURE NOTES What has been seen around Chickerell: It has been good to see the Canada Geese flying overhead again – a real wintery sound to hear their call in the mornings and evenings – and to see the Lapwing back in the fields near Portesham by the coast road. Flocks of Lapwing, or ‘Peewit’ as they can be known because of their call, used to be a common sight but it is becoming more difficult to see them now.**************************
