In 1956, then Senator John F. Kennedy published awork that won him the Pulitzer Prize. His work,Profiles in Courage, detailed heroic actions by U.S.
Senators throughout our American history where countrywas put ahead of self gain. Kennedy wrote of the great menwho not only led the Senate to become the greatest deliber-ative body in the world, but who both created and saved ourgreat republic. We have named schools in Los Angeles afterthese great Senators memorialized by Kennedy, includingDaniel Webster and Henry Clay. Close to 200 years afterthese men walked the corridors of the Capitol, we honortheir courage. These were truly great individuals. We recallthe glory of their words and of their actions.
“Profiles in courage” would not be an apt description formany in public life today. We see members of both sides ofthe isle in Congress who choose a timely holiday vacation toa long-term resolution of a chaotic, expiring tax situation. We see members of Congress making millions in the stockmarket based on information only available to them in theirofficial roles. We see ethical charges in which accusationshave been made of using one’s office to benefit a bankowned by a husband. We witness the head of the congres-sional committee overseeing taxation himself charged withnot paying his own taxes. We see the chair of an oversightcommittee taking preferential treatment from a bank hiscommittee oversaw for a low home mortgage rate unavail-able to others. In today’s Washington, we see a lack of actionto resolve the financial issues impacting our budget and ourlives. We see a lack of response to a very real internationalcrisis regarding Iran. Washington “leaders” seem incapable ofacting with courage. Problems worsen when this is little or noresponse.
I mentioned how some schools in Los Angeles have beennamed after the heroic and courageous Senators in Kennedy’sbook. We have a different standard today for “naming rights”for our schools, parks, and other local sites. Drive down thefreeways or streets of Los Angeles. New schools are notnamed after now deceased “greats” who changed our societyfor the good. We see parks, courthouses, and schools namedafter current politicians, currently serving in Congress, on theCounty Board of Supervisors, or on the City Council. It does-n’t matter what party a current “leader” is from. Democratsvote to name a courthouse after a Republican in the Republi-can’s district. Republicans vote to name a park after a Demo-crat in the Democrat’s district. It goes like this: “I willmemorialize you if you memorialize me.” If you get electedto an office, you have the right apparently to have every newpublic project in your district named for you.
When I went to school in New York for college and graduate
school after growing up in Los Angeles, I was amazed howpublic schools are often merely numbered rather than named. There is Public School 61 or P.S. 101. I used to question thispolicy. After all, when we name a school for a Senator whosaved the Republic or a general who led us to victory, we bringhistorical figures to greater public awareness. We help to createthrough the naming of our institutions role models for ourchildren to emulate.
The other day I drove by a school named after a member ofCongress who has been under charges for ethical scandals. Ialso drove by parkland in the Santa Monica Mountains namedafter a current member of the Board of Supervisors who hasvoted repeatedly for maintaining the status quo as a memberof the Coliseum Commission, actions that helped rob the peo-ple of Los Angeles of millions of dollars of public benefit, maintaining a system of kickbacks and bribes. Maybe he wasnot aware of the harm he was doing to the people of Los An-geles. Maybe he can be forgiven for his oversights. However, have his actions in public office raised him to the level wherehe should be memorialized forever with thousands of acresof public open space named after him for all time to come?
There are many dangers in naming our institutions after liv-ing politicians who still hold office. The book is not closedon their service. We often need historical perspective in which
11 J a n u a r y 1 6 , 2 0 1 2 • 323-965-1544 • [email protected]
to view those worthy of naming rights. In the recent Los Angeles Times articleabout the corruption within the Coli-seum Commission, there were at leastthree members of the allegedly cor-rupt Commission who have alreadyhad public institutions named afterthem. If they are charged with crimesin the future, do we remove theirnames from the dedication plaques ofthe schools or parks?
We need to review the standards bywhich we bestow honors on today’s fa-mous. We need to reconsider what wedemand of our leaders. We don’t seemto expect courage in our leaders anymore. We don’t seem to expect fromour leaders that they act boldly. Wedon’t see great debates. We hearcountless speeches, but few memo-rable words.
When students attend JeffersonHigh, they have a constant reminderof the great leadership of this authorof the Declaration of Independenceand the negotiator for the LouisianaPurchase.
In the Jewish community, we seeschools named after the “highestmbidder,” the biggest donor. I knowhow the system works. It takes moneyto purchase a campus site or build aschool. Selling naming rights to thehighest bidder has been a proven wayto finance large school projects. But itwas notable when a local day schoolwas renamed after Ilan Ramon, thefirst Israeli astronaut who perishedaboard the Columbia shuttle, ratherthan a donor. It is important that wehave a yeshiva named afterMaimonides or other schools namedafter even more recent Gedolei Yisrael, leading rabbis and leaders of ourpeople.
Have you seen the baseball-card-stylecards of Rabbis, with pictures and thelife stories of leading Rabbis on eachcard? Have you seen the many biog-
raphical books, especially for youngchildren, on key Jews from history? Aswe teach our children (and ourselves)about these great leaders and rolemodels, we inculcate the importanceof the values they lived. As we providelife examples of how a great Jewishleader lived such as principle as avoid-ing Lashon HaRa, idle gossip, we bringalive the concept and model exemplarybehavior for our next generation.
I used to serve in the 1980’s and 90’sas the National Jewish Chaplain of theBoy Scouts of America. In developingeducational materials to serve theScouts and other Jewish youth pro-grams, we sampled some educationalchapters. In one of the chapters, therewas a question for discussion: Thinkof two famous Jewish business leadersand how they have contributed to ourpeople and country. I remember oneof the Scouts responding to this ques-tion, “The two famous Jewish businessleaders that I think of are both in jail!”
For both the sake of the Jewish com-munity and for the sake of America,we need to restore virtuous principlesand living as primary. We need to seeongoing “profiles in courage” as welook at our Jewish and secular leaders. We need to establish effective modelsfor leadership for our children to fol-low. We need to reserve the naming ofour institutions for only those whotruly have given their lives for the val-ues we cherish. When we honor thedisgraced, we belittle the values whichserve as the foundation for both Ju-daism and America.
It is not too late. There are many op-portunities for our leaders to showcourage and values. And we shoulddemand nothing less. •

Vayeishev, Maayon Yisroel, theChassidic Learning Center ofLos Angeles held a Pre-Chanukah Melaveh Malkah andconcert.
In gratitude and celebration ofMaayon's core supporters, thisnight of music and inspirationwelcomed over 200 people ofthe various Jewish communitiesin Los Angeles and around thecountry, all members of MaayonYisroel's 501 Partners program.
Maayon Yisroel’s events strivefor a signature atmosphere ofachdus, warmth and elegance, and this event was no different. The exquisite décor togetherwith soft lights and many can-dles was accentuated by the softpiano and cello playing in thebackground as guests made theirway to a buffet of delicious hotfood and drinks.
As the evening continued,Rabbi Reuven Wolf thanked thecommunity members whohelped put the evening togetherand introduced world renownedsinger Benny Friedman, a greatfriend and supporter of MaayonYisroel. Benny's performancewas powerful, soulful and touch-ing, and intertwined with RabbiWolf ’s inspiring words aboutChanukah. At the peak ofBenny’s performance, the men
spontaneously joined together, singing and dancing until the en-tire room was filled with joy.
The highlight of the eveningwas, of course, the drawing forthe 501 raffle. With a grandprize of a luxury trip to Israel, including 2 round trip tickets, 7nights in the luxurious Mamilahotel, 7 gourmet dinners, and achauffeur, the room waited withbaited breath to hear the win-ner’s name. A dramatic riff onthe piano played as the winningticket was picked, and RabbiWolf announced the winner,Rabbi and Mrs. Reuven andChana Leiba Nathanson of LosAngeles.
With a hearty congratulationsto the winners from everyone inthe room, the evening windeddown, and the guests left theevent satisfied in knowing thatthey are helping supportMaayon’s valuable work on be-half of the Jewish peoplethroughout the world.

"If nominated I shall not accept, ifelected I shall not serve." The words ofCivil War general George TecumsehSherman ring clear in American his-tory as a tribute to a man's obstinateunwillingness to commit to furtherservice to a shattered country.
It seems that Moshe responds in al-most the same manner, not to anominating committee but to G-dAlmighty. When Moshe is ap-proached by Hashem to speak toPharaoh, he defers. First he ponders,"Who am I to go to Pharaoh?" (Exodus3:11) After Hashem exhorts him,Moshe tries a different tactic. "I am not aman of words…for I am a manheavy of mouthand speech." (Exodus 4:10) Again G-drefutes his extenuation and chidesMoshe that, after all, "who makes amouth for man if not the Almighty?" Andonce again He urges Moshe to go toPharaoh, assuring him that "I will bewith your mouth and teach you what to say."(Exodus 4:12)
Finally, when Hashem assuresMoshe that it is His hand that will
guide him, His words that will bespoken and His spirit that will inspirehim, Moshe still does not accept. Hehas one final seemingly lame pretext:"Send the one who You are accustomed tosend." (Exodus 4:13)
The scenario is almost incompre-hensible. After every one of Moshe'sprotestations are well refuted by theAlmighty, how did Moshe have theaudacity to petition G-d to sendsomeone else?
My 2nd grade rebbe, Rabbi ChaimFollman, asked his Rosh Yeshiva,Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetzky, to offici-
ate at the wed-ding of hisdaughter. Reb
Yaakov checked his appointment cal-endar and shook his head slowly."Unfortunately I have a prior com-mitment and can not fulfill your re-quest." He wished Reb Chaim andhis daughter a heartfelt mazel tov, showered them with blessings, andadded that if his schedule wouldopen he would gladly join them at thewedding.

On the day of the wedding, Rav Yaakov was informedthat his original appointment was canceled. Immediately,he made plans to attend the wedding. Assuming hewould come after the ceremony, he arrived at the halllong after the time that the invitation had announcedthat the ceremony would commence.
Upon entering the wedding hall, Rav Yaakov realizedthat for one reason or another the chupah had not yetbegun. Quickly, Rav Yaakov went downstairs and waited, almost in hiding, near the coat room for nearly 40 min-utes until after the ceremony was completed. A few stu-dents who noticed the Rosh Yeshiva huddled in a cornerreciting Tehillim could not imagine why he was not up-stairs and participating in the chupah. They, however, did not approach him until after the ceremony.
Reb Yaakov explained his actions. "Surely Reb Chaimhad made arrangements for a different m'sader kidushin.Had he known that I was in the wedding hall he wouldbe in a terrible bind --after all, I was his first choice andI am much older than his second choice. Reb Chaimwould be put in the terribly uncomfortable position ofasking someone to defer his honor for me. Then RebChaim would have to placate that rabbi with a differenthonor, thus displacing someone else. I felt the best thingto do was stay in a corner until the entire ceremony hadended -- sparing everybody from the embarrassment ofeven the slightest demotion."
Moshe's older brother Ahron had been the prophet ofthe Jewish nation, guiding them, encouraging them, andsupporting them decades before Moshe was asked byHashem to go to Pharaoh. When Moshe was finally con-vinced by the Almighty that he was worthy of the des-ignated mission and that his speech impediment was nota inhibiting factor, there was one more issue that Moshehad to deal with. And that factor was not in Hashem'scontrol. It was a very mortal factor -- his brotherAhron's feelings. Under no circumstance, even if everyother qualification were met, would Moshe accept a po-sition that might, in some way, slight his brother Ahron
Only after Moshe was assured of Ahron's overwhelm-ing moral support and willingness to forego his com-mission did Moshe accept the great task. Sanctity ofmission and divinity of assignment end somewhere verysacred: at the tip of someone else's heart. •

Most children are excited aboutschool. But for my eight-year-olddaughter, school presents seriouschallenges. The odds are heavilystacked against her. I can see and feelher apprehension as she checks hersupplies one last time. She climbsonto my lap in need of extra reassur-ance. As she presses herself againstme, I stroke her freshly washed hair, and softly tell her over and over againhow much I love her. That she will doit. That she will succeed. In her ownunique way.
On her forehead there is an invisiblelabel which reads: “ADHD.” Thisword entered my life and became partof my vocabulary nine months ago,in a doctor’s office. Looking back, Irealize that by the age of two years ithad become quite evident that shewas more active and more difficult tomanage than the average child. How-ever it didn’t occur to me at that timethat anything was actually wrong. Iguess I chalked it up to personality.
I do remember that I was busy withher from the moment she awoke untilshe closed her eyes. In order to dealwith her hyperactivity and her abilityto destroy the house (literally), I prac-tically moved into the park, whichwas, thankfully, around the cornerfrom my apartment. I guess I could
have won the Guinness world recordfor “mother that sits most in thepark”! I sat there for practically sevenyears! It was either playgroup/school,or park. Rain or shine, there we were.
In the winter, I would bundle usboth up with layers of clothes. In therain, we wore rubber boots and plas-tic raincoats. In the summer, we woresunscreen! I was equipped. I wouldwrap up supper for two and bring itto the park. The park table didn’t havea tablecloth she could pull off ! The
park didn’t have walls to climb on,cabinets or dressers to unpack, orbeds to jump on. It had slides, mon-key bars and swings, and plenty ofgrass to run on. Exactly what sheneeded! And that is how I managed.I am a solution-oriented person, sofor me this was the solution.
Unfortunately, it didn’t solve her ac-ademic problems and the social andemotional issues that came along withthe territory. Our finances also suf-fered, as my plans to “return to workafter the baby gets big enough” nevermaterialized. She was a full-time jobin herself. That left us to manage onmy husband’s modest salary.
One day, in the middle of her first-grade school year, I received a phone
call from her school informing methat a meeting had been scheduledand I was expected to be there. In theback of my mind, I knew that thetime to face the obstacles had come.So there I sat on a metal folding chair(my husband was unable to take offfrom work to attend), looking acrossa scratched metal desk, at the schoolprincipal and the assistant principaland her teachers! Although they werevery polite and genuinely concernedfor my daughter’s wellbeing, I felt likea sheep against the wolves. They did
not bite my head off as I expected, but they did say that my child wasfalling behind in her studies, bothEnglish and Hebrew, and that she isvery disruptive in class. Further de-tails included getting up when shefeels like it, doesn’t follow instruc-tions, blurts out answers withoutbeing called on . . . As if that wasn’tenough, they informed me that shewas a “disaster” socially. They in-structed me to take her to a psychia-trist, to have her evaluated and treatedas needed.
I wasted no time in getting this mat-ter under control. I made lots ofphone calls and did extensive researchtrying to find the most competentpsychiatrist. When my daughter wasfinally diagnosed, I had mixed emo-

tions. I was relieved to know that aheretofore incomprehensible situa-tion was at least making some sense.I also felt that a problem that has aname can also have a solution. How-ever, at the same time, I felt over-whelmed and isolated. I wasconcerned that this diagnosis couldbecome a label which would be usedto judge and condemn my daughter.I wondered how she would manageto make it through school and in theworld at large.
I had no support from my husband, who was in denial, and kept on insist-ing that ADHD is not a real disorder.“What she needs,” he insisted, “is aniron hand!” He, like many parents, had difficulty coming to terms withthe fact that his child was not likeeveryone else.
Having a longstanding aversion toany kind of medication, for me to ac-cept the fact that my child might needstimulants in order to enable her tofunction in school was not easy. (Bythe way, I am sure that many of youare wondering why an overactive childneeds stimulants. My daughter andher ADHD counterparts seem to bethe proud owners of brains that haveunderdeveloped attention spans. Ri-talin targets this part of the brain, andassists in improving concentrationand focus.) After much research, Iwas ready to comply with her doctor’s
recommendations, and she began tak-ing a fairly low dosage. Although shehad some side effects at first, such astrouble falling asleep and a decreasein appetite, with time these symptomsdiminished entirely, and I must con-fess that it has made a huge differencein both our lives.
Things settled into what could beconsidered a routine. Surprisingly, thesemi-respite gave me time to stop andthink (a luxury which I had not hadfor a long time), and I realized thatunderneath my relief was a strongfeeling of loss and disappointment.Unconsciously, I had envisioned achild who, like me, would be a starstudent and a social butterfly.
Wave after wave of anger and self-pity washed over me. Why was Ielected to deal with this problem? Why did my daughter, my innocentchild, have to struggle with this dis-ability? Why couldn’t my husband bemore supportive? Why couldn’t out-siders be more compassionate andunderstanding when she acted up?
These questions lingered in mymind as I went through the motionsof living. One evening, after a typi-cally exhausting day, I sank onto thecouch, leaned back my head andclosed my eyes. A few seconds later(that’s how it felt to me, but it mighthave been longer), I opened my eyes,
ready to finish up the evening routine, and saw my daughter standing quietlynext to me. I was more than a little bitsurprised, since I couldn’t recall everseeing her standing still. She looked atme with an adult-like seriousness, andasked, “Mommy, do you love me?” Ifelt my mouth drop open and mythroat tighten. I reached out, pulledher on my lap and held her tightly.“Of course I do!” I whispered. “Ilove you very much!”
After she had fallen asleep and I waswashing up in the kitchen, I thoughtabout what had just happened. I hadbeen taking care of business anddoing what needed to be done, but Ihad not been taking care of myself. Ihad not been nourishing myself phys-ically, emotionally and spiritually, andthat had resulted in feelings of resent-ment, which my daughter had obvi-ously sensed. I began paying attentionto my eating habits, by cutting out thejunk foods, and including vitamin-rich foods and extra supplements inmy diet. I joined a dance/exercisegroup. I also added a whole range of“spiritual vitamins and exercises”which I would like to share with you.
The first one, of course, is Vita-min A—Acceptance. I learned toaccept my life as is.
The second vitamin is VitaminB—Belief. I believe that nothing

happens by chance. Everything is part of a master planorchestrated by a loving G‑d, and both our gifts and ourstruggles are tailor-made to guide us toward spiritualgrowth and development.
Vitamin C is Courage. I have the courage to move ondespite uncertainties and fears.
Vitamin D stands for Determination. I am deter-mined to overcome my weaknesses and become G‑d-cen-tered instead of me-centered.
Vitamin F? You guessed it—Faith. I reaffirm dailythat G‑d accompanies us and supports us every step ofthe way.
Vitamin G is Gratitude. When I actively look forthings to be grateful for, I am pleasantly surprised. Wher-ever I look, I see blessings. I notice the times my daughterdoes well and is manageable. I have begun to say “thankyou” to G‑d for the miracle of life. I have begun to smile.
Vitamin H—Humor. I can’t stress enough the impor-tance of finding the funny bone in ourselves and our lives, and tickling it. I am beginning to respond with amusementrather than frustration. I am beginning to lighten up.There is so much to laugh about.
And last, but not least, is vitamin P—Prayer, which,as far as I’m concerned, is much more effective thanProzac. As I recite Psalm 121, “I lift my eyes to heaven, fromwhere will my help come?” my questions dissolve. “My helpwill come from G‑d! The One who created heaven andearth.”
We sit together on the front stoop and review the con-tents of her backpack, making sure that nothing is missing. The big yellow school bus pulls up, and the door unfolds. My daughter jumps up, her blond hair curling around her
face in a halo of disarray. She glances back at me, and inthat split second, the look in her eyes tells me what is inher heart and mind. She knows that from me she will al-ways receive unconditional love. As she mounts the bussteps, I know that she will have the coping skills neededto march through the day. If there is something that shecannot handle, she will report back to me and receive val-idation and support. I cannot always rescue her. I cannotalways solve her problems. But I can provide a sympa-thetic ear and, when she is ready, discuss ways in whichshe can handle the issue. In situations which escalate, Ican intervene and advocate for her. I am her social worker, and she is my one and only client.
The school bus rumbles down the street, and my up-stairs neighbor comes down to meet me with her two-month-old baby and a bag full of supplies. She is very gladto get out of the house for a few hours, and considers methe ideal babysitter. My neighbor hurries off to her uncle’ssweet shop, where she will decorate gift baskets and so-cialize. She is more than happy to split her paycheck withme, giving her a little pocket money and me the extra in-come needed to get through the month. I hold my tinyneighbor in my arms and he smiles up at me. After I feedand change him, he will keep me company while I do thehousework. His placid demeanor never ceases to amazeme. By the time my daughter comes home from school, Iwill be ready to take her to the park, where we will eat sup-per and do some homework.
My life has not turned out as pictured or planned, andthat is fine with me. Instead of a pampered princess, I ambecoming a courageous heroine. My daughter looks up atme, and trust and admiration are reflected in her eyes. Ourjourney is far from over, but we both are learning to enjoythe ride. •

Some people just never learn. For almost a yearPharaoh was literally plagued by every conceivable mis-fortune, yet he refused to let the Jewish people leavehis land. Of course, he pleaded with Moshe duringevery plague to stop the great inconvenience, pain, anddisaster that were befalling his country. He would evenpromise to let the Jews go, yet he never admitted guilt. He would beseech Moshe to stop the various plagues."Pray for me and remove the frogs! I will let you serve your G-din the desert." Sometimes he would offer unrestrictedfreedom, only to renege when the plagues ceased.Never, except on one occasion, did Pharaoh admit thatG-d was correct and he was corrupt.
That exception was the plague of hail. In fact, theplague of hail was so powerful that even Hashem Him-self categorized it in a unique way. Moshe quotedHashem to Pharaoh: "This time I shall send all my plaguesagainst your heart, upon your servants, and your people so thatyou shall know that there is none like Me in the world" (Exo-dus 9:14). Why did Hashem consider the hail a morepowerful act than His turning water into blood, or de-livering pestilence, or wild animals or frogs? True, thehail did miraculously contain a fire ensconced in theice, but all the plagues had miraculous attributes tothem. Turning the Nile into blood is not an everydayoccurrence either! What characteristic did the hail haveto label it "all my plagues?"
Even more troubling is Pharaoh's response. After theplague strikes Egypt he calls Moshe and Ahron and hetells them "this time I have sinned, Hashem is righteous andI and my people are the wicked ones" (Exodus 9:27) Whatcaused Pharaoh to utter those submissive words at thisparticular time? Didn't he already see blood, frogs, pestilence, boils, wild animals, and a host of differentmiraculous misfortunes that befell his people? Whatwas so special about the fire and ice that fell from theheavens that charred even this man's cruel temper?
Radio commentator, Paul Harvey, related the follow-ing story: William and his Aunt Caroline were con-stantly feuding. Actually, William was jealous of hisaunt's popularity and social status in the New York ofthe late 1890's. Compared to her, he was considered asocial outcast, and was never invited to any of her lav-ish parties. That would have been bad enough. Havingto live next door to her was too much for William tobear. The sight of elegant carriages arriving and de-parting made him seethe. Yet he could do nothing. Atleast he did nothing until the family fortune was dis-tributed and he received 100 million dollars. Then heH

knew what to do. He decided to rip down his mansionand build a monstrosity. It had 530 rooms, 350 baths, and a whopping 970 employees. It would be the grand-est, most elegant guest house of it's kind. More carriageswould pull up to his home in a day then to his aunt'smansion in a month! Her home would pale in compar-ison, and the tumult of it all would force her to move.
William was right. Aunt Caroline moved way north ofthe shadow of her nephew's hotel. And then she rippeddown her old home. With the mere 50 million that shereceived, she too, decided to build a hotel on the site ofher old mansion! It would be even more elegant, withnicer rooms and better service than her nephew's. Twoadjacent, competing hotels would have been built rightnext to each other if not for the wisdom of William'sown hotel manager. He got the two feuding relatives to-gether and explained that hostility is not the way to suc-cess.
"If you two could just work together and adjoin thetwo hotels as one, it would become the most outstand-ing and influential accommodation on earth," he ex-plained. They listened and followed his instructions. Heeven advised them to make sure that every opening be-tween the structures could be sealed again in case of arenewed falling-out. But in the end, William Waldorfand his aunt, Caroline Astor decided to bury the hatchetand replace it with a hyphen. And the world's most lux-urious accommodation was built -- The Waldorf-AstoriaHotel.
There are many opposing forces in the world. How-ever, when they work in tandem, they are the most pow-erful force possible. During this plague, fire and ice, twoopposing forces in the world of nature disregarded theirdifferences all in the service of the Supreme Com-mander. When Hashem announced that He will send allof His plagues, he was referring to conflicting forcesthat work harmoniously. After that, even Pharaoh wassensible enough, albeit for a short moment, to see hisfrailty and delusions. When even the worst of men seefire and ice dance together on one mission, there is noth-ing he can do but watch in amazement and admit,"Hashem is the righteous one and I and my people arethe wicked ones." When opposing opinions gather forone objective - to do the will of Hashem - they are asunstoppable as the hail that brought Pharaoh to hisknees. •

Recently, I saw an amaz-ing factoid that mademe stop and think. It
said, “If a mosquito, going 1 mile perhour, hits the windshield of a cargoing 60 miles per hour, the car willslow down by one-millionth of a mileper hour.”
Not having majored in physics, this
came as a bit of a shock. I wouldthink that a teeny, tiny, mosquito likethat would have no effect on the twotons of glass and steel hurtlingthrough space. And yet, it does. And,as Sir Isaac Newton would say, it’snot just a good idea, it’s the law! Thelaws of physics dictate that the colli-sion MUST create an impact and the
car MUST be slowed and affected byits interaction even with the tiniestamount of mass.
Now, we should all realize thatscience doesn’t make the rules of na-ture; it just observes them andrecords them for posterity in a journalof note using verbiage that causes theaverage Homo sapiens to scratch his
cranium. That beingsaid, when we say thatphysics demands thatthe car slow down fromthis minor impact, whatwe’re saying is that theworld operates in such away that it is physicallyimpossible for some-thing to come in contactwith something else andbe unaffected.
OK, so why does theworld operate that way?Because HaShemlooked into the Torahand used it as a blue-print for the world. This tells us that theTorah itself, which is theessence of G-d’s Willon earth, requires thatevery force must have aresult and every action,a reaction or conse-quence.
I have heard that noprayer is ever wasted.Even if we don’t getwhat we asked for(presumably becauseHaShem knows itwouldn’t be good for us,or things might havebeen worse than weimagined and we gotoff easy,) that prayer isput towards somethingand has benefit. That
The Observant JewMaking an Impact

would fit in with what we’re saying, and the laws ofPhysics would just be confirming that every collision hasan effect, no matter if it’s noticeable or not.
Our actions, too, have impact, even if we don’t see them.Plus, what makes a minor impact today, may becomemagnified and create a greater impact at a later date.
In chaos theory, the “butterfly effect” is the sensitivedependence on initial conditions; where a small change atone place in a nonlinear system can result in largedifferences to a later state. The name of the effect, coinedby Edward Lorenz, an American Mathematician andMeteorologist, is derived from the theoretical example ofa hurricane's formation being contingent on whether ornot a distant butterfly had flapped its wings several weeksbefore.
Now, I don’t know exactly what the above paragraphmeans, other than that it tells you I know how to copy andpaste information from Wikipedia. In essence, though, what starts out as a small, almost unnoticeable act here, today, can create a whirlwind of change elsewhere in thefuture. That’s exactly what we’ve been saying, except forone thing.
I don’t believe this is “chaotic” at all. This is “OrderTheo-ry,” a term I’ve just coined to explain that nothingin the world is random, but is instead part of G-d’s planfor His creations (hence the “Theo” in theory.) No matterwhat happens in this world, it was likely caused bysomething else, and will cause yet something else tohappen.
Imagine a giant Rube Goldberg device with levers, buckets, balls, strings, blocks, and all other manner ofmechanisms. They all interact and react, and are part ofachieving the final desired result. All of us act based onour personal experiences, learning, and naturalinclinations. All our actions, and the various influenceson us which directed those actions, can be traced back to
Creation, essentially when the Al-mighty gave the ballbearing its initial shove down the rails.
All this being said, we should recognize that we canchange the world. It may not be noticeable at first, or evenever. But HaShem sees the change, and others do too.The Maccabees fought a guerilla war with small groupsagainst the massive Greek presence, and it didn’t happenovernight. They fought for three long years. People died. But they were making an impact.
When you feel that you can’t do anything important --that you’re insignificant -- remember the Maccabees, andremember that mosquito who managed to slow the careven an infinitesimal amount. Then look to see what youcan do to make the world a better place.
But what if you’re not trying to change the world? Whatif you’re just going along, minding your own business? Then you’re not affecting anyone, right? Wrong.
A forensic scientist was quoted as saying that every roomhas evidence of everyone who was ever there before. Wecan never go into a room without leaving something -- ahair, fingerprints, skin cells -- something will be left behindand able to be found. That not only happens in the phys-ical realm, but our spiritual echoes reverberate long afterwe have left a room and evidence of our one-time pres-ence can be found at a much later date.
So, when the spiritual forensic experts go back to seewhat we left behind, we need to wonder what they willfind. Will the level of the place have been raised by ouractions, like the Torah tells us about Yaakov? Will ourinteraction with others make them want to get to knowHaShem more, or chas v’shalom, less? Will people try toemulate our behavior? Should they?
There’s no such thing as making a move without causinga ripple effect. We must therefore be very careful that weleave behind a shining guide light for others to follow. Theresults may be truly miraculous. •

• 1 cup (2 sticks) margarine, at room temperature
• 1/2 cup white sugar
• 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
• 2 large eggs
• 1 (8-ounce) block dark chocolate, coarsely chopped
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper. Sift together the
flour, baking soda, and salt into a medium bowl and set aside.
Place the margarine, sugar, and brown sugar in the bowl of an
electric mixer; cream together on medium speed until light and
fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula.
Beat in the vanilla and eggs. Gradually add the dry ingredients
to the creamed mixture and continue to mix until a smooth bat-
ter forms. Turn off the mixer and fold in the chocolate chunks
using the spatula.
To form the cookies, scoop about 1/4 cup of cookie dough into
your hands and roll it around into a ball; place them about 3-
inches apart onto the prepared cookie sheets; you should get
about 4 cookies on each pan. Press down the tops of the dough
slightly and bake until the cookies are light brown, 12 minutes
for chewy cookies, or about 15 minutes for crispy cookies.
Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes
before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Repeat with
remaining dough/cookie sheets.
