People sometimes do things subconsciously on a daily basis without realizing its effect on others. It might just be a hasty generalization that sets of a negative connotation when a stranger passes by. Often people make racial statements whose color or culture is different in ways that are not acceptable from the environment majority of the people move in. People who tend to be racist are the ones who refuse to accept others as equal. Like Senna’s grandmother refused to accept everyone as equal due to her beliefs in noble bloodlines and the satisfaction of her granddaughter marrying to a Wasp or a Jew rather than a handsome intellectual African American, like her mother. Being black, or any ethnicity of color, is a privilege. It’s a blessing, one that everyone of color should embrace. If one believes that being different (color or culture) in the U.S. or in other countries is a burden or a curse, then that’s a racist who cannot live a life of cross-cultural relationship. But what the author means is that black is beautiful then being black is a privilege. Keep in mind that for her being black is a choice since she can pass for white. Do not let anyone destroy one’s pride of culture; being whoever a person is a privilege. Despite all the pain and destruction that racism has brought upon people of color, people who fight for who they are and what they can do regardless of their colors are the ones who will live peacefully and gain respect from people who misunderstood them. That outweighs the injustice. Being abused, physically or mentally, or even both, is anguishing, no doubt. The result is a lost confidence to stand up for oneself and to fight for the right to live as an equal to other race. Yet, should the victim love themselves less or think less of themselves? No, there is nothing wrong with the victim. The fault lies within the abusers. They are the problem of the society. Racism is just another story of idealism of social construction which focuses on those people of different mixture (of blood or of culture) who suffers from the loneliness and frustration of non-acceptance of the community around them. It is a tragic event that immediately conjures up visions of hopeless psychological misfit doomed to live always in torment as the “Other”. Auspiciously, with positive outlook to live and with correct management, the result is infinitely better than the opposite view of those who accepted that they are worthless and insignificant. Society must learn how to accept people with different color or culture to avoid racism and to let them live normal as others do.
