Architectural Committee

You received a new copy of the Architectural Guidelines in November, 2013. Take a look at it to get familiar with the rules of the Colony regarding maintaining the aesthetics of your property. Your ARC committee members walk the Colony monthly observing each property for compliance with the ARC Guidelines and submits a report to Accell, our management company. We look for maintenance and repair of the homes and landscaping. The three main things that catch our attention are: 1) Repair and paint of the house and fence- Is there

termite damage? Does the house or fence need painting?

2) Maintenance of the yard- Is the grass cut and weeded? Are the bushes trimmed and dead areas planted?

3) Miscellaneous things that should not be in front of the house- Toys, portable basketball stands, garbage cans, etc. should be stored out of sight when not in use. Garbage cans may be set out on the curb no more than 24 hours before pick-up and put away within 24 hours after trash pick-up.

Spring is coming. Stand out on the sidewalk in front of your property and take a critical look. Is it time to spruce up and beautify? On our walks we have seen many lawns with brown or bare areas lately. In speaking to a nurseryman at Armstrong we were advised that raking in new grass seed may be done now, but if you wait until mid-Feb to March, the seed will grow much faster because of the warmer nights. Bermuda grass is a type of grass that always dies back in the winter. When you see it come back 70-80% in the spring, give it some fertilizer. It is not too soon to weed however. We have seen a lot of dandelions going to seed.

If we do see a violation, you will receive a courtesy notice and have 30 days to correct the issue. When not corrected by the homeowner, a second letter is sent as a violation notice. Again, you have 30 days to correct the violation. If needed, a third letter will be sent inviting you to a hearing panel. Please do attend that meeting. The hearing panel, which is not the ARC committee, is made up of two homeowners and a board of directors member. The panel will listen to your defense. They may dismiss the violation, work out a solution with you, or impose a fine for non-compliance. The fines can multiply if the problem is not addressed.

The ARC committee meets the first Thursday of each month at 7 PM. It is open to all members of the Colony. Come by if you have a question or concern, or to submit your application for additions and alterations to your home or landscaping. Applications may be downloaded from the Colony website, www.colonyirvine.com

Colony Honey-Do List

If you are thinking about sprucing up your home in the New Year, one of the best deals in town is Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore stores. There are over 800 ReStore locations in the United States and Canada. Each location sells new and gently-used home im-provement goods, furniture, home accessories, build-ing materials and appliances to the public at a fraction of the retail price. Profits from the sales support Habi-tat’s mission to build and renovate homes and com-munities. This is a great resource for all sorts of home decorating projects. Items available for sale range from knobs and faucets to large pieces of furniture and appliances. To find a location near you, go to www.habitat.org/restores.

Breakfast with Santa Many families enjoyed the annual Colony Breakfast

with Santa. Colony residents were treated to a pancake breakfast, crafts and a holiday musical performance by Shine, Orange County School of the Arts students, Ryan Batten, Linsey Schreck, Carson Ripley and the Colony’s own Katie Minerman. Many thanks to the volunteers who helped set up, clean up and help at the event. Thanks to Emmanuelle Bigot, Catherin Kohlhase, Ann Rosa, Justine Brown, Autumn and Valerie Schiano, Melanie McGehee and of course Santa for stopping by!

Colony Recreation Committee Wants You! Do you like planning events, enjoy people and

meeting your neighbors? If so the Colony Recreation Committee would love to have you join us! The Committee currently is only three permanent members plus our board liaison. We would love to expand our numbers! The Committee is responsible for the Colony community events: the upcoming Adult Social, Easter Egg Hunt, Fourth of July events, Movie Night, Halloween Family Fun Night and Breakfast with Santa. If you are curious, need more information, or want to help out on the committee please contact Eliza Holt at [email protected]

Landscape Committee

The new landscape vendor Douglas Landscape has been getting a better handle on our irrigations systems and has brought the water bill in line in their 1st month of service. We are looking forward to that continuing when the weather gets hotter and the systems are put to the test of being more efficient.

Gov. Jerry Brown declared a drought emergency in California, where rivers and reservoirs are dangerously low after one of the driest years on record. He asked the people to cut their water use by 20 percent. We will work with Douglas to make sure we are doing our part .

Federal agriculture officials this week designated parts of 11 states as disaster areas, citing the economic strain

that the lack of rain is putting on farmers. So, the situation is real; we can use the help of everyone in the community. Not only review your own water usage, but also make note of any thing you see in common areas were it looks like water is being wasted. It could be a leak, a broken sprinkler head,. if you see something, let us know. After hours the Accell phone number, (949)-361-3290 will reach

to a live person who can give the information to Douglas landscape.
