Architectural Committee Spring seems to have come early this year. The first few

warm, sunny days have produced an attractive greening throughout the Colony. When these warm spells occur, there is a need to mow the lawn more frequently, pull the weeds, check the pavers for dandelions, trim the hedges and generally clean up the property. A walk around the neighborhood shows plenty of cheerful homeowners doing these things. It is a good time to reseed; watering is important but with the current drought, please be careful how the timer of the sprinklers is set: there are guidelines on the back of your water bill that can advise you. Most of us are familiar with the black plastic pots that we get from the nursery: plant your plants, or replace the black pots with decorative pots; it is so much more attractive.

For those contemplating bigger jobs like painting,

landscaping, additions, or repairs there are application forms available online; also you can come to a meeting- the first Thursday of every month, in the clubhouse, 7 p.m. There will be applications there, too; you can also ask questions and discuss your plans.

A final word is appropriate; please remember to take

your trash cans in every Tuesday. Leaving them in view of the street is an eyesore, and will result in a violation notice. The Colony is a lovely neighborhood; let us keep it that way.

Pool News

Good news! The heat has been turned on at the Colony pool as of March 15. With the sunny weather, the pool has already been getting use. The pool hours are from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm; 6:00 am to 8:00 are designated as quiet swim time. We have recently changed our pool maintenance company and this will save money. Our new pool maintenance company is Aquatic Balance. They will be monitoring the pool 3 times a week during summer (April – September) and 2 times a week during Winter (October-March). Their emergency number is (714) 435-9080. If someone has an accident in the pool i.e. a leaking diaper, vomit, or dead animals please call Aquatic Balance or Accell Property Management (949) 581-4988 so they can take appropriate steps to keep our pool clean. As a reminder, only special swim diapers are allowed to be used in the pool to prevent contamination.

The Colony Red Hots

have their schedule for the pool again this summer in continuation of their excellent community building competitive swimming program. It should be noted that the Red Hots have produced many notable swimmers including Amanda Beard, an Olympic medalist. Residents are encouraged to participate. The HOA Board voted to allow the Red Hots to use the pool for practice from June 9 through August 15 from 3:30 pm until 7:00 pm. As in previous years one third of the pool will still be available for non swim team use during this time so other community members will have room to use the pool. Other notable dates for the Red Hots’ include 3 home meets to be held at our pool on the Saturdays of July 12, 19, and 26. During this time the entire pool will be used for swimming competitions from 6:00 am until 2:00 pm. Also the pool will be closed for a Red Hots’ team photo shoot on June 20 at the Colony pool from 3:45 pm until 5:00 pm.

We are hoping to provide pool monitors again this

year, but we are still in the contract negotiation stage of this endeavor. As a reminder, parents are ultimately responsible for the safety of their children when swimming, so please keep a vigilant eye out for your children when they are in the pool area. Also, no running in the pool area. Pool monitors are the final say for rule enforcement inside the pool gates.

Landscape Committee

Look for the Ficus trees to be trimmed along the mall in the coming weeks. The Podocarpus trees near the tot lot will also be trimmed as will the Mulberry tree in the park.

We have requested the sand in the tot lot play area, swing set area, and the sand play areas on the north walkway to be rototilled because they have become compacted.

We had a couple leaks in irrigation lines over the past months. Both were detected and reported by residents. This is very helpful to keep water usage to a minimum. If you see water in a common area that does not look right, please report it to Accell and they will contact the landscape company to have it looked at. Even if it is after hours or on the weekend, the sooner it is reported, the sooner it can be corrected. Accell’s after hours number is 949-361-3290.

Activities Interest Groups Enclosed with last quarter’s assessment letter was a

form asking residents what sort of activities they would like to see being offered in The Colony. I am pleased to report that we received an avalanche of responses! For a community this size, it would be reasonable to expect about 9 or 10 responses (2%); we got 45 (9.5%) -- or four-and-a-half times what we would expect. Thank you!

The most popular request was for a walking group, and so the first groups to form were a walking group and a jogging group. So far they have met once, and the participants decided to make it a weekly activity. Please keep an eye on the website and The Colonist newsletter for upcoming meeting times for these and other groups.

The next activity groups to form will – hopefully – include tai chi and water aerobics. Any group that involves physical activity will require a signed liability waver before participating.

Another community interest is public safety, so look for a public safety meeting with a guest speaker from the Irvine Police Department in May.

Name of Activity (number of votes) Walking (20) Tai Chi (16) Yoga (15) Water Aerobics (12) Volume Purchasing (13) Movie (10) - in the park (or in the Clubhouse) Potluck Social (12) - since we are such an international mix, perhaps bring a dish from your heritage Gardening (10) Cooking Demo (10) Neighborhood Watch (9) Public Safety Forum (8) Board Games (including a specific request for Bridge) (7) Evening Book (10) Great Decisions discussion group (6) Afternoon Book (5) Annual Food Pantry (5) Volleyball (4) Annual Blood Drive (5) Biking (4) Running (4) Tennis (5) Morning Book (2) Date Night (2) Music (1) Basketball (2)

Colony Honey-Do List

A popular upgrade in The Colony is to install a new front door. Depending on the size of the opening, you may have many options to choose from. They include: single door, Dutch door, double door, single door with one sidelight, and single door with two sidelights. A sidelight is a rectangular element about 12” to 14” wide running vertically next to the door. In some cases, the sidelight can be opened and works like a narrow window, with a screen covering the opening to let in a nice breeze without having to keep your front door open. As with everything, the cost of the door will depend on the style, materials, and features you choose.

As always, remember to fill out an Architectural

Application found at http://www.colonyirvine.com/documents and get your proposed changes approved before you begin work. The completed application can be submitted to Accell, or brought to the monthly Architectural Committee meeting, 7:00 P.M. on the first Thursday of each month in the Clubhouse.

Colony Walking & Jogging Activity Groups

Do you want to get some exercise and get to know some of your neighbors a little better? The Colony has started a walking group and a jogging group to do just that. The groups met for the first time on Saturday, March 8th, and decided to meet weekly thereafter. To join in, meet up in front of the Clubhouse any Saturday morning at 9:00 AM. To participate, you will need to sign a liability waver before your first outing. They are available on the web site under documents. You are welcome to join whenever you can. Hope to see you there!

FUN FACT ABOUT THE COLONY

CORRECTION: In the last issue of the Colonist, the second place winner of the Holiday Lighting contest was 14081 Chagall Ave, not 14081 Sur Ave as listed in the last newsletter. Fun fact: homes on Sur and parallel streets have only four digits in their address, while homes on Chagall and parallel streets have five digits. Thanks to Valerie Schiano, homeowner, for the correction and fun fact!
