Things To Do In The Garden During April and May By Myra Radlow

Prevent slug and snail damage with an organic con-

trol, like Sluggo. Or wrap raised beds and containers with self-stick copper tape.

Fertilize trees, shrubs, vines, and groundcovers. On citrus trees, you can use an organic granular fertiliz-er, as directed on the package.

Be on the lookout for HLB (Huanglongbing) symp-toms on your citrus trees. If you find yellow splotch-es on green leaves, call the California Depart-ment of Agriculture (800-491-1899) to report the problem. More information is at http://www.californiacitrusthreat.org/huanglongbing-citrus-greening.php

If you see any aphids on roses or other plants, water around the plants and then release ladybugs either early in the morning or at dusk to encourage them to stay in your garden.

Plant summer-blooming bulbs such as cannas and irises, and tubers, including dahlias and tuberoses.

Divide and repot any crowded cymbidium plants. Spread a 3- to 4-inch layer of mulch to protect

plants from drought, heat, and weeds. For blue-flowered hydrangea, apply aluminum sul-

fate (sold at any nursery). Control ants with a sticky Tree Tanglefoot Insect

Barrier or traps containing boric acid. Get inspired by visiting local native plant gardens! Some to visit are: The Coastkeeper Garden at Santiago Canyon College http://www.coastkeeper.org/coastkeeper-garden California Native Garden at Golden West College http://www.goldenwestcollege.edu/garden/visiting.html

A good resource to buy native plants is Tree of Life Nursery in San Juan Capistrano on Ortega highway. They also have frequent seminars on native plants and how to replace your lawn. http://www.californianativeplants.com/

Architectural Committee: PAINT COLORS AND GUIDELINES By Eileen Tsai

Thank you to the many homeowners who have sub-

mitted applications to improve the appearance of homes with beautiful new paint, upgraded fences and gates, win-dows, entry doors, garage doors, new landscaping, and even new roofs. The Architectural Committee (ARC) ap-proves most of the applications immediately and works with the other homeowners to find mutually satisfactory solutions. Colony homes are over 40 years old now and exterior work is a must to maintain structural integrity as well as fresh appearance. You can see pride of ownership when walking or driving around the Colony.

Please remember all exterior paint alterations require prior ARC approval. Please submit your application either

by mail to Accell or in per-son at an ARC committee meeting. Paint chips should be attached. The ARC com-mittee meets the first Thursday of the month. A list of the currently ap-proved paint colors is post-ed on the display board by the Clubhouse door, and also on our colo-nyirvine.com website. These are Sherwin-William paint color numbers which

can be duplicated and purchased from any other paint vendor like Dunn-Edwards, Home Depot, Lowes, Vista Paint, etc.

Remember paint colors fade over time and new paint needs to match existing colors, not the original colors. Fences must be painted, both for appearance and to weatherproof. Oxford Brown paint color for fences is no longer available from Sherwin-Williams but can be matched.

Every house exterior should be painted 2-3 coordinat-ed and contrasting colors. The ARC committee are look-ing for are stucco/wood siding to be light with dark trim/fascia, or the opposite with dark stucco/wood siding and light-colored trim/fascia. Keep in mind any brick/stone walls or walkways, roof, window trim, garage door and fence colors also need to look good with the new paint colors. Indeed, with window trim and garage doors often manufacturer white, 2 other paint colors are enough. No striping is allowed, for example, highlighting wood strips

New Property Manager for the Colony Our Property Manager Jennifer Fontana has de-

cided to relocate to Northern California. Accell is assigning Shanne Ho as the new manage-

ment representative to the Colo-ny. Shanne has already begun orientating herself to our commu-nity and working with Jennifer. Shanne Ho has been in the com-munity association management field for almost twenty five years

and we look forward to working with her. Shanne is a strong advocate of education, part of

the development program for Board Members and community managers. She has served on the Com-munity Associations Institute of Orange County (CAI-OC) Education Committee since 2000 and is a faculty member for the community leadership training pro-gram. Shanne is also an instructor for California Asso-ciation of Community Managers (CACM) in their Manager training program as well as a member of the Orange County Regional Forum Education Com-mittee.

Join us in welcoming Shanne in her new role.

How to Call the Police “Call the Police!” Seems simple enough, right? Surpris-

ingly, many people aren’t that sure how or when to call the police. I thought I’d take a moment to talk about the differ-ent ways you can reach us and why you should never hesi-tate to give us a call.

Of course, for an in-progress crime or any other emergency situation involving danger to personal safe-ty, you should immediately dial 9-1-1. Remaining calm and confirming your location is essential to avoid delays in our response. Many homes no longer have landline telephones and are using Internet services instead. In these cases, the ad-dress information may not be current or available to us auto-matically. Be sure to update your information with your carri-er and confirm your location with the 9-1-1 operator. Calls to 9-1-1 made from landlines and cell phones in Irvine will almost always come directly to the Irvine Police Department. The exception is calls from the freeway or very near the freeway, which may go to the California Highway Patrol. Don’t let this concern you. Dispatchers are able to quickly transfer 9-1-1 calls back and forth between the two agencies and will stay on the line until the call is successfully trans-ferred. And remember, when calling from a cell phone, we will need you to tell us your location.

So, what about those times when you aren’t sure if you should call or not? The simple answer to that is, call us! We have a non-emergency line and our dispatchers and officers are very good at prioritizing calls. You never have to worry about “bothering” us or taking up time when there are “more important” things for us to be doing. If we are busy or something more important is going on, we will respond to calls in order of priority. So many times while investigating a crime we learn someone saw something suspicious that end-ed up being related to the crime, but didn’t think to call at the time. Almost without exception, when we arrest a sus-pect for a crime that just occurred or render emergency medical aid to someone in need, it is because a member of our community called the police.

For non-emergency calls requiring a police officer to be

dispatched, you can reach our Communications Center at

949-724-7200. For routine police business, questions or gen-

eral information you can call our Business Desk at 949-724-

7000. After business hours, all lines transfer to the Commu-

nications Center and are answered by Dispatchers. For spe-(Continued on page 7)

Pool Report By Chip McGehee , Pool Liaison

The pool was scheduled to have the heat turned on March 15th, however it has been delayed due to a recent discovery of a malfunction in the boiler. The boiler is what heats the pool. We are working quickly to purchase a new boiler and will have it installed as soon as possible. Unfortunate-ly, until then the pool will remain unheated.

We have a few improvements coming up; the diving board will be repainted, the bro-ken drain covers are going to be replaced, and the steps around the pool will have their edges repainted with a friction grip type of paint to avoid slips.

The Red Hots Swim team is funding the repair and replacement of the lane lines used for swim meets. They are also having the starting block an-chors replaced at their cost so that the anchors will be more stable and easy to take in and out.

The Red Hots swim season is starting soon and

Social media is fast-becoming a preferred source

of information for many people. We are now doing

more than ever on our social media sites. We use Face-

book, Twitter and Instagram to keep the community up

to date on trends, share safety tips, and provide details

about events and the police department in general. We

post press releases, crime prevention information, and

other items of interest. These pages are not monitored

24/7, however, so this is not a good way to report a

crime or request an officer response.

Access Irvine, our smart phone application, is a

perfect way to share a non-emergency tip or quickly

access police contact information. The APP is available

for Apple and Android.

The last communication tool I’d like to mention is neighborhood social media sites. Recently we have seen many neighborhoods start up private social media pages, such as Nextdoor. This new way to connect with neighbors is growing in popularity and presents many opportunities for communities. As a word of caution though, it is important to remember that information posted on these sites is not monitored or vetted by po-lice and can sometimes be exaggerated or inaccurate. I recently held an “emergency” community meeting be-cause some residents were fearful, and some even an-gry, about a string of crimes they heard about on their neighborhood’s social media. In reality, there had not been any such crime series. In fact, there hadn’t even been that type of crime in their area for many years. The anxiety caused by misinformation shared was diffi-cult to undo, much like trying to un-ring a bell. Please remember the best way to get accurate information about police matters will always be directly from us and we don’t receive information posted on these types of sites.

So, stay in touch by following our social media pag-es, looking at our webpage for press releases or just giv-ing us a call on our Business Line with any questions you may have.

you may have noticed registration signs in the neighbor-hood. We hope your children are going to participate in this excellent community building program this year. It is a great way to get to know your neighbors and make new friends. The Red Hots have pro-duced several excellent swimmers including Olympian, Amanda Beard.

The Red Hot’s season schedule will start June 1st. Practice will be June 1st through June 19th from 3:30-6:00 PM and June 22nd through Au-gust 2nd from 3:30-7:00 PM. Two lanes are left open for non swim team lap swimming and free swim during practice times.

ISL Swim meets are scheduled in our pool on June 27th, July 18th, and July 25th from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm. The swim meets are very entertaining and I would en-courage everyone to come check them out. During swim meets the pool will not be available until after 2:00 PM.

Graffiti Spray Painted in Colony

On Sunday, March 1st, purple spray paint was dis-covered defacing our tennis court windscreens and a homeowner’s wood fence on Hemingway as well as a couple of smaller areas in between. The Irvine police were called and responded. A case number has been assigned. If you can help the investigation, phone the Irvine police.

Graffiti is unsightly, costly and if left in place can de-value our neighborhood and our individual properties. It should be dealt with promptly. Graffiti on private prop-erty is the owners responsibility. If graffiti is seen on Col-ony common areas please contact Accell as soon as pos-sible, so it can be removed.

The city of Irvine has a “Zero Tolerance Policy” re-garding graffiti. If you see graffiti or are a victim of graffiti you can and should also report it to the Irvine Graffiti Hotline at 949-724-7196. For more information go to https://www.cityofirvine.org/cityhall/pw/facility_maintenance/graffiti.asp

You can help prevent graffiti by reporting any suspi-cious activity in the neighborhood. The Colonist has been running a series of articles on how and when to call the Irvine Police Department. The Irvine PD is here to protect and serve, and the officers are happy to re-spond to any concerns you may have. If you see any-thing that seems suspicious to you, call the Irvine police. They will be glad to check it out.
