In 1950 North Korean troops cross 38th parallel to reunite country by force. President Truman brought this to the United Nations which agreed that North Korea was the aggressor. The U.S. and the UN send in air support and eventually troops to support the South Koreans. The North Koreans are forced to retreat to the Chinese border, until China comes across the border to protect herself.

4The Cold War 1950-19591950s The Arms Race Struggle between U.S. and U.S.S.R. to have weapons superiority1953 Russia tests hydrogen bomb1954 1958 U.S. tests 19 hydrogen bombsAs the Arms Race intensifies the U.S. is willing to risk war to protect its interests. This is a policy known as Brinksmanship.

5The Cold War 1950-1959

The Arms Race leads to both the U.S. and the Soviet Union building huge stockpiles of nuclear weapons in order to maintain superiority. This chart shows the U.S. and USSR/Russian nuclear weapons stockpiled from 1945 2005.

6The Cold War 1950-19591950 1954 McCarthyismJoseph McCarthy Republican Senator leads crusade to investigate officials he claimed were Communists

After terrorizing the entertainment community and many other Americans who he accuses of having ties to Communism, Senator McCarthy is finally discredited in 1954.7The Cold War 1950-19591956 - Suez Crisis After the promise of aid is withdrawn, Egypt seizes control of the Suez Canal

After the U.S. and Britain cut the offer of aid, Egypt seizes control of the Suez Canal. This leads to a joint British, French, and Israeli attack. President Eisenhower, who is against the invasion, pressures Britain to withdraw. Egypt however retains control of the Suez Canal. 8The Cold War 1950-19591957 - Sputnik Soviets launched the first artificial satellite into space, starting the space race

When the Soviets launch Sputnik, Americans are afraid the Russians are beating them into space. The next year the Soviets launch a bigger satellite, with a dog inside of it. This results in the creation of NASA by the U.S. This is a Russian postage stamp commemorating the launch of Sputnik in 1957.
