Mama Bear’s Bakery & Café is quickly becoming more than just a popular coffee shop in Geist. It’s a place for community events and meetings, and now the cozy coffee shop at 10110 Brooks School Rd. is becoming a place to showcase local talent with an open mic night for teens!

“It was more about offering something for the kids than just business,” says Owner Christy Watkins who passed out flyers and posted the open mic night on Facebook for high school singers and musicians.

“Not all kids go to football games and school events,” says Christy. “This gives them a place to go that’s safe, and they can play their music.”

By 7 p.m. on this Friday night September 25, the place was packed, and a band called “Dirty Jerry” was taking the stage.

“I feel like I’m in an episode of ‘Friends!’” laughs Christy. Singer/songwriter Megan Ledford was waiting outside with family and friends strumming her guitar and waiting her turn.

“This is so nice,” says Megan with a smile. “There’s really no place like this where we can go and perform and talk with the audience about your music!” The HSE senior – who says she always look for opportunities to perform – has auditioned for the television music competition shows “The X Factor” ands “The “Voice” and plans to audition again in the spring.

When it was Megan’s turn on stage, she played a song she wrote called “Summertime Rain” which the crowd seemed to enjoy. “Some sing one or two songs, or they can sing a 30 minute set if they want to,” says Christy who was inspired to do open mic nights from her days at HSE where she and her friends were always looking for fun things to do.

Christy says she plans to have more open mic nights in the future “as long as they want to come sing,” and she adds that adults have been asking if she would consider getting a liquor license and holding adult music nights.

“I have thought about that too,“ laughs Christy. ”But this place is kind of adult day every day, so I really wanted to do something for the kids first!”

Interested musicians should check Mama Bear’s at Geist on Facebook for future open mic nights. Teens can sign up the night of, email Christy at [email protected] or call Mama Bear’s at 317-288-4831.

We all enjoy watching the changing of the leaves in the fall, but for one former Geist resident, the changing of the leaves signaled the end of her 2,200 mile hike in New England on the Appalachian Trail!

“Loving the colors changing right before my eyes,” Colleen Binkley posted on Facebook after hiking the Mahoosuc Notch known as the most difficult mile on the Appalachian trail.

Colleen grew up in the Geist area and graduated from IUPUI. She left her job at Glazers Wholesale Distributors March 22 to hike the Appalachian Trail and wrapped up seven months later in October. Hiking the trail is not for everybody, so I asked Colleen how she enjoyed her experience.

“Hiking the Appalachian Trail became a very special place for me,” says Colleen. “I met hundreds of others that set out to do the same. It’s a wonderful community that is very supportive of hikers in many ways. People always say to me they wish they had the time

to hike the trail, but you have to make time, and every single person who does loves it!”

However, the trail is not without its rough times too.

“I had two rough patches during Virginia and Pennsylvania," says Colleen. "Both times, I was frustrated with the trail and sick of being wet and tired and hungry and everything else. It became very overwhelming in the woods away from civilization, family and friends.”

Her dad, Geist resident Dave Binkley, kept in touch with her along the trail and said her biggest enemy was poison ivy.

“There’s no doctors or urgent care centers along the way!" says Dave who overnighted a prescription of Prednisone to Colleen to a pub in a remote town in Maine.

The label read, “Please hold for AT hiker Colleen Binkley."

She got the medicine, but unfortunately, after the first dosage, her throat swelled up!

Turns out she is allergic to prednisone!

Colleen, known as Toasty on the trail (all hikers have nicknames), says along the trail, she saw a baby bear with its mother, a rattlesnake and a wild pig they named Miss Truffle.

Dave and some family members flew out to Maine October 3 to hike the final stretch of the trail as a lot of family and friends do.

Colleen does credit her father who taught her to always seek adventure and Geist resident Tom Britt who coached her in girls basketball when she attended St. Simon, so we know where she gets her strength and stamina!

So what’s next for Colleen?

“There’s a trail in California called the John Muir Trail that I want to tackle next,” says Colleen. “It’s only 211 miles which sounds much more doable than the Appalachian Trail!”

You can check out Colleen’s pictures of her journey on the trail at facebook.com/Colleen.Binkley.

Over the summer, FoxGardin Kitchen & Ale opened their doors on Main Street. A few months later, the Fortville restaurant has become a hotspot for locals looking for great food, service and even live music. Hoping to grow even more, owner Jake Burgess is planning on opening the FoxGardin Lounge, a bar and lounge conveniently located on the second floor of the restaurant.

“It is going to be a whiskey, wine, bourbon and scotch kind of bar and lounge area,” said Burgess. “As we fill up in here on the weekend nights and certain nights when

seating is a little limited in the small space I have, I will be able to direct guests upstairs. It gives them a whole different atmosphere, a place where they can hang out and congregate with their friends.”

The lounge will feature leather couches, a 10-12 person bar and a community table from local business reNEW. Using local businesses isn’t new for FoxGardin, as they use local ingredients to combine high-quality food with a hometown feel.

“We wanted to bring a very specific kind of dining to my hometown. We took a lot of the service standards and quality of food

that I have been accustomed to working in fine dining in downtown Indianapolis for the past eight years and we wanted to bring it back home and really focus on the food and service and a really cool atmosphere,” said Burgess. “Downtown Fortville is the perfect spot for us with a lot of local shops. It has been a lot of fun to be able to push the limits of the cuisine that was a tradition to a small town.”

If everything goes to plan, the FoxGardin Lounge will open mid-November, just in time for Thanksgiving and the Christmas season. For more information, visit foxgardin.com.

Buckle up, theater patrons of the Mud Creek Players Theater that borders Geist, Fishers and Lawrence. You see, the 65-year-old playhouse known as the Barn will not be your grandpa’s theater when late November arrives.

First, the area’s leading live theater will give official birth to a major physical improvement. A new, six-figure lobby will be added to the entrance of the facility.

Secondly, the lobby will be introduced at one of the theater’s most raucous plays when the iconic “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” for a three weekend stint from November 13-28.

If all goes according to the plans of director Paul Haskin, the theater on 86th Street will be shaking from the belly laughter coming from inside.

“It’s bawdy, it’s a farce and it will be vaudeville at its best,” promised Haskin, a longtime Mud Creek director who will implement a live band into the musical that has had major stints on Broadway and numerous theaters nationwide.

But the wild comedy will be the second act when visitors come to the playhouse, starting Friday, November 13. That is when President Kent Delp and his Board of Directors plan to publicly open the remodeled theater and the sparkling new lobby that will open to the general theater seating.

“This will be a major addition in patron comfort,” said Delp, who navigated the approval process through the Board of Directors. “This will help us manage the traffic of our patrons much better. People will be able to gather in a location before the doors open and not face weather conditions as they purchase tickets or wait for the doors to open.”

The new lobby will host a ticket office and a 500-foot space for patrons before entering the 125-seat theater. The improvement will also allow additional space for concessions sales.

Delp, who joined Mud Creek Players five years ago, hatched the idea of adding a lobby in 2013. He admits it was a grinding process for final approval.

“We refined the idea and made a presentation to the board. There were some concerns, and we respected those objections. We were able to disagree.”

Delp ideally sees the new lobby as a billboard for the theater to continue efforts to reach into the community and uncover new actors, support staff and patrons.

“We are very rich in tradition,” said Delp. “We have people in our organization who know their stuff, and we want to pull in people to teach them their skills.”

MUD CREEK BARN EXPANSION

"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" opens on November 15.

Kent Delp, President of the Mud Creek Players, stands outside the expansion project underway.

Page 13: Geist Magazine November 2015

12 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2015 / atGeist.com atGeist.com / NOVEMBER 2015 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 13

One of Mud Creek’s core programs is youth theater activities for teenagers and younger who aspire to be involved in the theater.

“We want the kids to grow up and become members,” said Delp. “But we also want more adults to get involved. There are so many areas that people can become involved.”

The upcoming “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” will possess one of the biggest casts in the history of Mud Creek. Haskin will have 20 actors and six musicians reliving the work of Stephen Sondheim and Larry Gelbart.

“We will have something for everybody,” said Haskin, who has directed Mud Creek standouts “Lend Me a Tenor” and “Shakespeare in Hollywood.” “This is probably the biggest show that I have done. There will be a lot of moving pieces.”

One of the stars of the show will be veteran Aaron Cleveland, who is Pseudolus, played by Zero Mostel in the 1966 movie.

“It will be hilarious,” said Cleveland. “I have seen the movie, and it is terrible compared to the play. The stage show is completely different. There is so much comedy in the show. I saw the play in Chicago and was in tears from laughing. You are belly laughing the whole time.”

Haskin also believes the play – which occurs in 500 B.C. in Rome – is a notch higher on the stage than on the big screen.

“It’s funnier, and there are more things that will make the audience react,” he said. “The actors break the fourth wall and will tell a joke directly to the audience. We will do anything for a laugh.”

Veteran actor Kevin Shadle will play Hysterium, another leading role for the 63-year-old who recently was Murray in “The Odd Couple” at Mud Creek.

“It will be a heck of a lot of fun,” Shadle said. “It will be silly, and there will be a lot of toe-tapping moments.”

And there is another element – dance. This attracted Christina Mathews of Fishers, who majored in theater at Purdue and is now a mother of two.

“There will be a whole lot of sexy fun,” admitted the long-legged, vivacious Mathews.

As we stated, buckle up, folks. The old barn

and the new lobby should be shaking in November.

On November 12, 1995, Mary Khamis-Rowe opened the doors to her own jewelry store after years of working for someone else. Twenty years later, Khamis Fine Jewelers is now a key business in the Geist district earning state and national awards and the loyalty of many customers.

“I have been involved in the jewelry business since 1978,” said Khamis-Rowe. “My neighbors managed the Zales store, and they needed part-time help, so I began working there during high school, and I am still in the jewelry industry 37 years later. Upon finishing college, I decided if I was going to stick with this, I was going to do it all the way.”

Khamis Fine Jewelers does not only provide top-quality service to

its customers, but also gives back to the community by sponsoring Little League teams, an Indy Lights team and Conquer Paralysis Now (formerly the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation).

Beyond community involvement, Khamis-Rowe also prides herself on providing customers with the best service and jewelry selection in the area. Believing that excellent service is what sets her business apart from the rest, she only hires professional and knowledgeable employees with years of previous experience.

“The best part of working here for me is making people smile,” said Khamis-Rowe. “You get to be a part of this special event in a person’s life and help them pick out the right piece. I have always loved jewelry. It has always been a passion of mine.”

Khamis Fine Jewelers carries a selection of over 1,000 pieces in store from high-end diamonds to sterling silver charms. They offer custom design, repairs, engraving, restringing and appraisals. Recently they added to their collection of awards by winning two state design competition awards in October.

“When a customer comes in, I just want to make them happy,” Khamis-Rowe said. “Whether it’s for a repair or to buy an engagement ring, we want to become their personal jeweler. We work hard to create that trust with each customer and build a personal

relationship. We have been here for 20 years, we have the same customers coming in and we have grown with the neighborhood.”

Looking into the next 20 years, Khamis-Rowe hopes to see the business grow even more.

“In the past 20 years, some things have changed, and some things have stayed the same. Jewelry styles and fashion are always changing, and we always carry the latest trends along with classic styles. We have seen the community grow, and we have grown with it,” said Khamis-Rowe. “Twenty years from now, I hope to still be growing and be a part of the neighborhood.”

From November 12-14, Khamis Fine Jewelers will be celebrating their 20th anniversary with a huge public event complete with food, drinks and discounts. Almost the entire store will be 50 percent off, and with every purchase, you can pop a balloon for extra giveaways. For more information, visit khamisfinejewelers.com.

The first ever Bridal Venue Crawl is coming to Central Indiana with a stop planned right here in the Geist/Fishers area!

The “Crawl” is a team effort between IndyBride2B and the TownePost Network. It’s a fun, creative way for brides-to-be to tour area venues. The initiation of wedding planning is to book that PERFECT venue, and this Crawl will help Indy brides do just that.

The day will be a convenient way for the brides to plan their entire wedding. Other wedding vendors will be on hand at each venue to showcase their services and finalize planning. The fun new process takes away the craziness of wedding planning and relieves the bride of that overwhelming feeling.

Come enjoy samples of wedding cakes and catering, pick your photographer, find the perfect florist and all your other wedding vendors. Some venues may hold a full “mock” wedding to provide the “WOW” that brides are hoping to find.

The fun continues with door prizes and goodie bags. One lucky bride-to-be will win the grand prize of a honeymoon vacation everyone dreams of!

“This has been a very popular trend in other cities, and we can’t wait to bring the venue crawl to Indy!” says Angela Commons, Vice President of Marketing for IndyBride2B.com.

The crawl will run on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on January 31, February 14 and February 28. Each scheduled day will showcase one area of Indianapolis, including the eastside, downtown Indy and here in the Geist/Fishers area.

Brides and their party will receive a map of the venues on the bridal crawl. The brides will be responsible for their own travel between venues which will be less than 15 minutes apart.

The TownePost Network will publish a special edition program featuring a full page display of each venue and maps of each weekend crawl. Brides can get information about registering for the crawls at area Bed Bath and Beyond stores or visit IndyBride2B.com.

IndyBride2B is an online bridal resource dedicated to Indianapolis and surrounding areas. They provide the bride with ideas and inspiration along with a great vendor list. There are plenty of blogs to read and events to learn about. Plus, there is a special section just for real wedding stories featuring Indiana brides. Brides can just “Google” Indianapolis Weddings, and IndyBride2B will pop up on the first page!

Tickets can be purchased for $7 as the early bird special before December 1. Advance tickets after December 1 will be $8 and $10 at the door on the day of the crawl. Register now and come join the excitement!

Local restauranteurs Henri and Shelley Najem bring their flare to Flamme, a new “fresh casual” gourmet burger concept located at The Depot in downtown Fishers.

Celebrating 25 years of restaurant ownership, Henri and Shelley Najem opened their latest endeavor to bring their exceptionally high quality tastes and ingredients to casual dining. The Najems are redefining the burger joint.

Flamme is an open concept restaurant serving up uniquely blended burgers and other fresh accoutrements with casual seating. A thoughtful selection of beer and wine is available, and the bar offers full menu service.

Henri’s restaurant experience began when he was 12 years old working in his Uncle Joe’s restaurant on the west side of Indianapolis. “Working in restaurants has been my life,” says Henri. “When my dad died, my mom supported my brothers, sisters and me by owning a restaurant until she retired.”

Shelley was 19 and working for the clothing chain Merry Go Round as a district manager when she met Henri. A hard worker and

perfectionist like Henri, Shelley soon joined him in the restaurant business.

Henri’s mom, Joanne, who is of Italian heritage, wanted an Italian restaurant to continue the tradition of her late brother, Joe. Joanne partnered with Henri and Shelley with Pisano’s, which was located off 71st Street and Binford. Wishing to open a location closer to their Geist home, they sold Pisano’s and opened Bella Vita.

The Najems are known for their decor and attention to detail, and Flamme is no exception. “The concept of ‘fire’ is a fun one to play with for interior design,” shares Shelley. “The interior is simple and thoughtfully designed, intended to keep guests comfortable while they enjoy our delicious food.”

“Henri has had this concept idea for a while,” shares Shelley. “He envisioned a nicer atmosphere for casual dining that we call ‘fresh casual.’”

Every menu item is made fresh to order, even the grilled chicken. The grill is the focal point of the kitchen. Henri designed it with the help of Shelley’s uncle, who is an engineer. Once the design was to Henri’s specifications, he applied for a patent.

“If I am going to do something, I want it to be the best,” says Henri. “The wood burning grill was key. I didn’t want a flattop cooking surface, but I didn’t want dried out burgers either. The open flame was the only way to accomplish the consistency, and with the angled channeling removing the grease, we don’t have the grease dripping into the wood.”

The grill is wood-burning only. The cooking grid has v-channels, and the surface angle is at a slight decline, so that grease drains off and not into the flames below. The wood-fired grill takes about 20 minutes to heat up to a very high heat. Flamme burns only oak along with apple chips to add flavor. The body of the grill is like a fireplace made with a steel structure.

Once Henri was satisfied with the cooking process, the consistency of the burgers needed to be addressed. The Flamme burgers are a special blend of brisket, short rib and sirloin.

The next detailed step was the bun. Henri and Shelley wanted to ensure that the bun wasn’t too hard and that there was not an excess of bread served with their burgers.

Najem share their

Working meticulously with Harlan Bakeries, the Najems created a custom brioche exclusively for Flamme. The two years of research to perfect what is brought to the tables at Flamme has been well worth the effort. Patrons are raving about the food, which is presented atop wood cutting boards.

In addition to their demand for high quality food and service, their generous philanthropic endeavors are already underway at Flamme. In conjunction with the ribbon cutting ceremony on October 1, “Flamme Out Hunger” brought in generous donations to support Third Phase in Hamilton County.

“We’ve always felt strongly about helping kids,” shares Henri. Shelley adds, “There are over 20,000 hungry kids in Hamilton County, and we are doing what we can to help.”

Growing up in a large family environment, Henri and Shelley have supported children

through many philanthropies. One that is close to their heart is Miracle Place. They were first associated with Miracle Place through St. Simon. Located at 10th and Temple Avenue, Miracle Place is run by nuns and oversees neighborhood children with homework, helps with daycare and provides any and all assistance for the neighborhood.

The Najems held a fundraiser and raised $30,000 to add on a room to accommodate additional services for Miracle Place. While they will continue to support Miracle Place, they also feel Third Phase is equally important.

For the month of November, Flamme is offering 10 percent off for winter clothing item donations to Third Phase.

The design of The Depot is to encourage foot traffic. Free parking is available in the parking garage and also along Municipal Drive. Fishers is the first of many locations for Flamme. Plans are now underway to open a second location at Grand Park in the Greenwalt development near the Cambria Suites hotel. Additional locations are in negotiations.

The Najems do not disappoint. Fishers, meet your new Flamme.

The Dolphin Tank event held at the Indiana Conference for Women addresses the disparity of funding that women-owned businesses receive compared to male-owned. But thanks to events such as the Dolphin Tank, the tide is turning.

Organizers Polina Feldman, a Spin Up Associate at IU Research and Technology Corporation, and Kristen Cooper, VP of Corp. Development and Operations for Sticksnleaves, have coordinated this year’s panel of judges and vetted the applicants.

“The group of applicants was strong, making the selection process challenging,” says Cooper. “There are so many viable business ideas presented by women. All deserve to pitch to someone.”

The panelists provide feedback in a friendly atmosphere, so that the entrepreneurs may take the next step with their business based on the recommendations. The presenters are at varying levels of development.

Leading up to the Dolphin Tank were a series of events supporting female entrepreneurs, inspiring their confidence and motivating them to create an effective pitch.

The local entrepreneurial community is very supportive, allowing women-owned businesses the resources and connections to be successful. The idea is to not swim in a cage to be protected from sharks.

The Launch Ladies networking group, lead by Cooper, held two Startup Study Hall events specifically to coach for a compelling pitch.

“If a woman-owned business wants to find a supportive community, they don’t have to look far to find it,” shares Lisa Mitchell, Founder of Power Body Language. “Launch Ladies, NAWBO, Verge, Sparks Talks and Launch Fishers as well as others are very welcoming organizations.”

Three companies will pitch to a panel of three judges. Pitches are five minutes in length with a feedback time of 10 minutes from the judges.

This year’s panelists include: Dima Elissa, CEO and Founder, VisMed-3D; Danielle Hughes, CEO of Divine Capital Markets; Aimee Kandrac, Founder of What Friends Do; Danielle McDowell, Executive Director of The Speak Easy; Kelly Pfledderer, CEO, Apparatus and Chairman of TechPoint; and John Qualls, President of Eleven Fifty Academy.

“At Eleven Fifty Academy, we believe that the coding profession lacks diversity, so we are reaching deep into communities to encourage diversity in coding including females, minorities and the underserved,” says Qualls. “Because females are so important to the Academy’s success, we want to make sure we are doing all we can to encourage women in all aspects of their professional lives.

“Participating in the Dolphin Tank will be a chance to encourage, connect and network with female business owners who may be interested in what we do, and I may learn about a business idea or two that will help us as we head into year two of teaching code.”

The keynote speaker for the conference is Kathy Ireland, the former model and CEO of a $2 billion business empire. For more information on the conference, please visit www.indianaconferenceforwomen.com.

THE DOLPHIN TANKINDIANA CONFERENCE FOR WOMEN TURNS THE TIDE FOR WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES

“It’s been an honor to host and work with the Indiana Conference for Women. The conference convenes diverse and distinct voices offering insightfull examination of topics most meaningful to women today. The connections formed at the conference lead to a commitment to action that establishes Indiana’s women ad leaders in supporting women throughout the Midwest in pursuit of economic empowerment that benefits all the communities they touch.”

“We are inspiring the attendees to take a risk and build something to go to market,” says Cooper.

“We are excited to see a lot of buzz about women-owned companies,” says Cooper. “Slowly these companies are rising to the surface. Women are ready to take their ideas and launch them…tech or otherwise.”

“The Indiana Conference for Women is building an ecosystem for women in our state, and on November 12, we will bring together another year of outstanding speakers. This conference will engage and connect with local and international business business leaders, best selling authors and thousands of attendees to share strategies, tips and advice for success. This conference will inspire you to learn new skills, network non-stop and build connections that catapult your life, career and business.

“You will discover thought provoking sessions that will help you gear-up on hot topics. This amazing conference will help you explore the latest thinking in leadership, entrepreneurship, career and personal development.”

FACTS ABOUT WOMEN-LED BUSINESSES:

ECONOMIC GROWTH: Women are starting more

businesses in the United States than men.

That is true in Indiana. If women-led businesses were fully financed, such businesses would lead to 11 million new

jobs in the United States.

UNDERVALUED: Companies led by women are

underserved and overlooked by the venture capital community,

and therefore, are typically undervalued.

BETTER MANAGERS: Companies led by women

achieve revenues 12 percent higher than those

run by men using an average of one-third

less capital.

LOWER RISK: Despite being capital

SALVATION ARMY ANGEL TREEWriter / Samantha Hyde

This Christmas, shoppers will find more than just bargains and festive lights as they wind their way through Castleton Square and Greenwood Park malls. A very special Christmas tree will also appear at each location, one that eschews shiny ornaments and tinsel for hundreds of simple paper angels with names like “Maddy,” “Anthony” and “Kayla.”

The Salvation Army is partnering with CBS4 to launch a new program in Central Indiana called Angel Tree. It’s their hope that shoppers will “adopt” over 3,000 children, or “Angels,” this Christmas. Each paper angel represents one real child, a boy or girl whose name, age, wishes and needs are printed right on the angel.

Sponsoring an Angel is easy. Shoppers simply choose a name from the tree and pledge to help The Salvation Army bring the joy of Christmas to this special child in need. Then they hit the stores, armed with their Angel’s description and an empty bag waiting to be filled with wants, like a special toy or game, and needs, like a warm coat or a pair of shoes.

Once the bag is filled, shoppers return it to the Angel Tree volunteers, and The Salvation Army stores it until parents collect the gifts just before Christmas.

The Angel Tree program started 35 years ago at a Salvation Army in Lynchburg, Virginia. It proved to be such an effective way to directly connect donors with children in need that it grew over time into a nationwide program currently helping more than one million children across the United States.

Thanks to the generosity of individual and corporate donors, Angel Tree helps to make the holidays more joyful for families facing significant financial struggles and hardships.

Major Bob Webster, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army in Indiana, has experienced first-hand the impact Angel Tree has on a community. “There’s not a single Salvation Army program that touches the lives of families like our Angel Tree program does,” he explains. “It not only meets the needs of area children, but it grants their wishes and brings the spirit of Christmas to

their home.”

Angel Trees will appear inside Castleton Square and Greenwood Park malls on Saturday, November 21. The trees will be up with volunteers on hand to assist with Angel “adoptions” every Saturday and Sunday through December 13. Black Friday shoppers will also have a chance to adopt Angels or drop off filled bags at the Angel Tree stations.

With thousands of Angels available for adoption, The Salvation Army is also counting on significant support from local businesses and groups looking for a way to give back this holiday season. This is an opportunity for companies to sponsor any number of Angels, whether that means five, 50 or even 100 children.

With so many kids looking for a merrier Christmas this year, the Angel Tree program will need tremendous support from our community, so keep an eye out for those special trees and be a part of something wonderful this year!

On Thursday, December 3, Assistance League® of Indianapolis will host “Wondrous Winter Wishes,” their annual Holiday Luncheon and Style Show. This fundraising event has become a holiday tradition for many ladies in the greater Indianapolis area. Members, friends, mothers and daughters look forward to this festive celebration that starts the holiday season.

As in past years, the Holiday Luncheon and Style Show will be held at the Ritz Charles in Carmel. The room, which is usually filled to its 500 person capacity, will be decorated with dazzling, sparkling shades of winter white.

Jo Craig, Carmel, and Jane Williams, Indianapolis, are co-chairing the event. Along with their committee, they have been overseeing preparations to make it an exceptionally enjoyable day for all attendees.

“It’s a time of camaraderie and friendship but also a chance to let people know about Assistance League’s® programs and an opportunity to raise funds for the children and adults we serve,” explained Williams. Craig added, “Members and their guests look forward to kicking off the holiday

season with the opportunity to give back to our community and make winter wishes come true for so many.”

The day will begin with a silent auction filled with many unique items. Participants will be able to bid on baked goods suitable for holiday entertaining, children’s items, decorative holiday offerings, college logo objects, gift cards and festive gift baskets. A Mystery Wine Bid will bring to the silent auction the opportunity for bidders to take home premium bottles of wine wrapped in beautiful winter wine bags ready for gift giving.

In addition, a tree decorated with over $500 worth of local area business and restaurant gift cards will be raffled off. The Secret Ingredient, an Indianapolis boutique, will again sponsor a style show with clothes modeled by representatives from the agencies, senior facilities and schools that Assistance League® serves through its philanthropic programs.

There will also be the chance to do a bit of holiday shopping. Clothing and accessories will be available for purchase from The Secret Ingredient. Kits & Kaboodle Classic Toys will be on hand to offer a selection of children’s games and toys.

Attendees can enjoy themselves even more with the knowledge that proceeds from the Holiday Luncheon and Style Show benefit children and adults that Assistance League’s® programs serve.

Operation School Bell®, the largest of the organization’s programs, has provided new school clothes and supplies to qualifying children in the Indianapolis area for 32 consecutive years. This year, over 3,000 students from the Metropolitan School Districts of Lawrence, Pike, Washington and Warren as well as Indianapolis Public Schools will benefit from the program.

When asked about the large amount of preparation needed for such an event, Craig responded, “Planning for the Holiday Luncheon is such a pleasure when you have enthusiastic committee members who are committed not only to the success of the event, but more importantly, who are passionate about the philanthropic programs it helps support.”

Besides the hard work of members, community backing is important to the success of the occasion as well. CarDon & Associates of Indianapolis have stepped up to be a sponsor of the event.

D uring his 28-year stretch as radio voice of the Indiana Pacers, Mark Boyle has conveyed to his listeners exhilarating moments from all 30 of

the lavish palaces of the National Basketball Association, including retelling knuckle gnashing moments from Madison Square Garden (New York), the Forum (Inglewood/Los Angeles) and the United Center (Chicago).

But none of these highly touted stops – including the 1,500 or so broadcasts from our $200 million Bankers Life Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis – offers the broadcasting experience Boyle endured during one of his early career moments when Boyle was describing a high school football game in a wooden press box in Miles City, Montana.

As Boyle was chattering away about passes and tackles uncorked by Montana teenagers, a threatening storm rolled in from the western frontier in Custer County. The game sprinted onward, and Boyle remained undaunted as he depicted the play-by-play action for folks listening to radio station KATL in the community of 8,400. But abruptly, the audience heard a crashing sound. The microphone fell silent.

“The wind blew over the press box,” remembered Boyle.

The downward plunge of the fragile press box was only about 10 feet to the ground, so fortunately, Boyle and his peers suffered only bumps and bruises. Unfortunately, there are no pictures available or recordings of the moment. But Boyle returned to the microphone and finished his assignment at the Miles City football game. After all, he earned a bonus of $10 doing broadcasts of high school games.

Over three decades later, Boyle evolved beyond falling press boxes in Montana. He has become one of the top voice talents in the NBA.

As a youngster in pre-cable Minnesota, the 54-year-old Boyle grew up in the same environment as did many young boys hooked on sports in America in the 1960s. He listened to the transistor radio broadcasts of the local sports teams. In the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, the favorites were the professional teams (Vikings, Twins and North Stars) and Minnesota Gophers (basketball, football and hockey).

Boyle became hooked. His career choice was nailed down. The one-time baseball, football and basketball player at St. Louis Park High School envisioned his future as a sports announcer somewhere in the United States.

His hero was Herb Carneal, who was the

Harry Caray, Jack Buck and Vince Scully of Minnesota. Carneal provided play-by-play action of the Twins on broadcast giant WCCO for from 1962-2006.

“I never believed in having an idol,” admitted Boyle. “I liked Muhammad Ali and Wilt Chamberlain. But I really admired Herb Carneal and Al Shaver [another longtime announcer for the hockey North Stars].

Eventually, Boyle worked with Shaver at KSTP, another super-sized radio station in Minneapolis-St. Paul and the northlands. From 1985-87, Boyle anchored football and basketball pre-game reports for the University of Minnesota.

Boyle’s landing with KSTP and the Gophers represented a huge jump from his days at the “Cattle Call” KATL in Miles City. That was when Boyle did triple duties, providing farm reports in the morning, gushing as a DJ in the afternoon and calling high school football and basketball games on weekends for parents and girlfriends. His salary was $500 a month, and there was the $10 bonus for broadcasting games.

Boyle’s resume lists seven radio stations, including one-year tours at New York’s WFAN (the country’s first all-sports station) and heartland powerhouse KMOX of St. Louis.

The Voice of the Pacers

MARKBOYLE

Page 34: Geist Magazine November 2015

Indianapolis native Jeff Smulyan owned WFAN, while in 1988, Joe Buck was an intern at KMOX; not the start of the movie “Midnight Cowboy” but the son of Jack Buck and now the No. 1 football and baseball voice of FOX.

Did Boyle discover broadcast heaven at KMOX, the voice of the Cardinals?

No. “I really didn’t like it there,” he confessed.

And so in 1988, Boyle was on the prowl for another broadcasting notch. It just so happened that an NBA team from Indianapolis was looking for a new play-by-play announcer at the same time.

The Pacers and radio partner WIBC were confident they had the right broadcasting combination for the Pacers and Colts in 1987. Veteran local talent Bob Lamey would serve as the voice of the 82-game Pacers season, while Canadian Mike Inglis would ride into town to broadcast Colts games.

But before the seasons started, Lamey said he preferred doing the Colts games. And Inglis, with little basketball history, was shifted to the Pacers.

Lamey remains with the Colts, but Inglis was forced out of the Pacers booth. (But Inglis may have gotten the last laugh. He became the first

announcer for the expansion Toronto Raptors and has done the play-by-play work of the Miami Heat for 16 years, including their three world championships.)

But the Pacers were big winners too. After listening to the audition tape from Boyle, team executives Greg Jamison and Larry Mago snared their next talent. Ironically long ago, Jamison and Mago moved on, but Boyle now enters his 28th season in Indiana.

“I have a great job here,” said Boyle, who has received many overtures from attractive NBA teams. “I can’t see how it could be any better. There are only 30 jobs like this in the NBA, and I have the luck of having one of those 30 jobs. The organization has been very good to me.”

And the feelings are mutual from his employers and front office teammates.

“His use of words to paint a picture never tires you from listening to his call,” said Pacers television announcer Chris Denari. “No one else comes close to Mark in his ability to describe a game on radio.”

Longtime Indianapolis sports observer Bill Benner agrees. “[He is] simply the very best in the business,” said Benner, who now serves as the Vice-President of Communications for the Pacers. “He rarely makes a mistake and always

delivers timely and appropriate information. He comes across as a professional rather than a ‘homer’ and only reacts with passion and excitement to truly passionate and exciting moments.”

One of those memorable and passionate moments came when the Pacers eliminated the Knicks in game seven of the 1995 NBA playoffs of the Eastern Conference semi-finals. Knick Patrick Ewing missed a winning layup at the buzzer, and Boyle roared, “He missed, he missed. Ring the bell, baby. Ding-dong, the witch is dead. Ding-dong, the witch is dead.”

The rest of Madison Square Garden sat stunned.

“That happened 20 years ago, yet I can rattle off that line like it just happened,” said Greg Rakestraw, general manager at 1070 the Fan. “Mark is a special talent, period. He’s part of the fabric of Pacers history and the soundtrack of the team.”

Some listeners may occasionally wish that Boyle rooted more demonstratively for the hometown team. But he shies away from showering referees with negative reviews.

“I really try not get too emotional,” said Boyle. “Your best chance to be successful is when you have control of yourself.”

Boyle steps aside for the emotional antics of his longtime sidekick, Pacer legend Bobby “Slick” Leonard. Leonard’s Boom Baby exclamation marks highlight three-point makes from the Pacers, and the Slick will occasionally hammer a missed call by an official.

“It’s a unique and interesting experience,” said Boyle in working with Leonard. “He has a rare gift. He connects with everybody. He can make a stranger feel like he is his best friend.”

Interestingly, while Leonard connects with seemingly all friends and strangers, Boyle prefers to keep a slight distance between friend and foe.

For someone who talks for a living, Boyle prefers to text to communicate with inquirers. His voicemail readily admits that he will probably NOT return your telephone call, but he is willing to text back a response.

It would be very unfair to accuse Boyle of being cantankerous or to call him shy or an isolationist, but there are times when it appears he may be a one-man offense. In basketball terms, announcer Mark Boyle sets screens for the pick-and-roll for Mark Boyle, the person.

For those not ranked among his tightest allies, Boyle limits his exposure and inner thoughts to a blog that started on the Pacer website in 2012. Destination Unknown drops in at unscheduled moments as Boyle reveals chapters in his life, including a failing relationship with a brother who struggled through homelessness and substance abuse.

Boyle has also written blogs about the tentative fan support for the Pacers and how he vividly launched an assault on ants that had invaded his kitchen. Indeed, the column can be called unique and unexpected thoughts from the wizard of words.

“I like writing, and the fan base has been good to me for a long time,” said Boyle. “This lets me get in touch with people.”

Boyle readily admits he prefers this type of communication with his audience instead of the bantering provided by talk radio.

“Mark is one of the most unique individuals I have ever met,” said David Benner, Director of Media Relations for the Pacers. “He’s well-read, intelligent and a great guy to engage in conversation. But getting to that conversation isn’t always easy as it takes a while to get his trust and for him to feel comfortable around you.”

The younger Benner and Boyle have engaged in a give-and-take relationship for almost three decades. At first, Benner was a writer with the Indianapolis Star. Now they connect via their jobs with the Pacers. Though they frequently venture together on road trips, there have been spotty patches during working hours.

“He’s very thorough and very well

prepared,” said Benner. “He sometimes wants answers to his questions immediately, so I have to calm him down.”

Radio engineer Scott Fenstermaker has sat beside Boyle for 23 years at Market Square Arena and Bankers Life Fieldhouse, working

the dials to guarantee that the radio voice can be heard on the radio at home, in the automobile or now the worldwide webcast.

“Mark is one of the most professional broadcasters I’ve worked with in my 35 years in radio,” said Fenstermaker.

“He demands the best out of people, but he is not the tyrant that some people can be. Mark makes those around him better.”

Now it should be noted that Boyle does now roll a perfect game for his mates. Bill Benner confesses that he still shudders when he hears the announcer refer to the Pacers as “the blue

and yellow” and not “the blue and gold.”

David Benner also says he helps Boyle in other circumstances away from the court. The man who scores major points in his pinpoint descriptions on the court may fall off the wagon in completing every day tasks. Especially on road trips.

“For a person who leaves nothing to chance in his broadcast regarding preparation, he is the absent-minded professor,” said Benner. "I can’t tell you how many times he has left his coffee cup, car keys, mail or whatever in my office.”

Benner fondly remembers the time that Boyle forgot to pack his dress shoes for a road

trip. Boyle’s solution was to wear loud yellow sneakers courtside with his dress suit. And there was a time in Miami when Boyle took a taxi to return to the Marriott Hotel where he thought he and the Pacers were staying. Alas, it was the wrong Marriott. When Boyle tried to get to his room on the 31st floor, he realized this Marriott only had 20 floors.

“I’m surprised we haven’t left him in some town, wandering the streets,” said Benner.

Also somewhat surprising is that the Pacers have not lost their cherished announcer to a bigger stage in basketball or Boyle’s preferred sport, baseball.

“That says something about Mark,” said David Benner. “The Pacers took a chance on him when he was young and unproven. As he developed, I think he was loyal to the Pacers for that chance.”

Boyle does annually leave the Pacers, his wife Janette and his Broad Ripple home. As part of his summer escape, he tackles new career challenges. The pay, if any, is puny, but the experiences have been huge.

Last summer, Boyle was an announcer for a baseball team in the Cape Cod College League. Other summer ventures have included walking 500 miles in Indiana to raise money for the Wish Fund; competing in the U.S. Chess Tournament; and piranha fishing in the Amazon. He has also done a weathercast for a local television station.

“I am always open to ideas,” said Boyle, who has no deadline on his broadcasting days at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Perhaps there will be a return to KATL, Miles City and that rebuilt press box.

“I have been coming to Geist Fitness almost daily for 10 years! I really enjoy starting off my day with Joe, Teresa, Ben, Jake, Rikki

(the club’s golden retriever), and my fellow workout friends. My personal goal has been to keep off the pounds, reduce flab, and

stay active. Geist Fitness has played a major role in getting and keeping me on track – plus it’s a warm and friendly place.

Whenever I run into one of these issues that come from getting older, I know my trainers will come up with solutions. Just this

past week I spoke to Joe about some hip pain and voila, Joe and Jake came up with some specific exercises to improve my hip

mobility and to strengthen my core muscles. Thank You Geist Fitness!”

So, when Grayson started having similar difficulties, Sheri knew just what to do to help him succeed. She called LearningRx, where Grayson took a 90-minute initial assessment, and then started a brain-training program specifically for his needs.

“Many learning problems are caused by inefficiencies in how the brain actually processes information—things like memory, attention, and processing speed,” says Heather Koenig, Executive Director and owner of LearningRx in Indianapolis. “We aren’t tutoring, which will only offer temporary help if there is underlying cognitive deficiencies. We are brain trainers offering a permanent solution to learning struggles. With our initial assessment, we can pinpoint the underlying cause for cognitive deficiencies and create a brain training solution that puts people on the path to learning faster, easier, and more efficiently for life. We help children to adults. and can assist people with traumatic brain injury, stroke, ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism, Auditory Processing Disorder, learning difficulty—and those who are just wanting to get a sharper, competitive edge.”

Grayson’s 24-week program addressed deficiencies as he worked one-on-one with a Cognitive Skills Trainer. His training

included scientifically researched based activities and drills to help him overcome what was holding him back. Grayson says, “It wasn’t easy, but I worked hard at it and I saw a lot of change in my schoolwork and my life. I even got better at my sports. In baseball, I was able to ‘read’ the pitcher before the pitch, or see what an opposing team was planning when I watched sports.”

Sheri explains, “LearningRx has equipped both of my sons for life in areas that I could not do on my own. They have given me teaching tools to use at home for future reference through their brain-training program. Both Grayson and Chandler are currently using the skills they learned in training to work through junior and senior high school.”

“LearningRx takes the frustration out of school work. It is a sacrifice of both time and money; however, the time and money are far less than most people spend on their kids’ sporting activities. My boys are able to soak up what they are being taught, and work through homework now that would have felt impossible before. My answer to parents who ask me about LearningRx usually ends, ‘Are you willing to give them the confidence and skills needed to survive in the real world?’”

Writer / Kathi Moore

“As a parent, what would you do to prepare your child for life?” asks Sheri Good, mother of three whose youngest son, Grayson, 11, became extremely frustrated with school, spending hours doing work that should have taken minutes. “He was struggling to read, spell, and remember information at school and at home. “He was starting to give up, lose confidence in himself, and we were definitely butting heads just to get his school work done,” Sheri says.

Sheri was no stranger to learning struggles. Three years earlier, Grayson’s older brother, Chandler, had similar learning difficulties; his self-esteem very much affected. After tearfully asking Sheri why he struggled to find answers to his schoolwork, she began searching for a solution. “He was ready to give up,” Sheri recalls.

A friend recommended that Sheri look into LearningRx for help. “After just 24 weeks, Chandler was more confident and could retain so much more information,” raves Sheri. “Now, he is a sophomore in high school and an independent student.”

PEPPERONI CRAWL

BAZBEAUXOriginally opened in Broad Ripple in 1986 in an old decrepit house that had been the home of the gravedigger for the town cemetery! Despite their “interesting” beginnings, Bazbeaux pizza quickly became famous in Broad Ripple Village for its freshmade pizzas! Garnering its name from a 15th century court jester who cooked creative and whimsical culinary dishes for the court of Lorenzo de Medici, Bazbeaux Pizzeria is a true Indianapolis original in “Create Your Own” pizzas!

All the pizzas here are made with a special blend of hand-grated provolone, mozzarella and pecorino romano cheeses. True to their name, their pizza sauces are homemade, and their dough is made fresh daily. We all really enjoyed their pepperoni pizza and award-winning garlic bread outside on the patio. FANTASTICO!

The Coors Light RV drivers awaited us as we exited Bazbeaux and headed further north for our next few stops. Our fearless #peppcrawl2015 leader did roll call and called in our next order…stuffed pepperoni pizza from Chicago’s finest, Giordano’s!

GIORDANO’SThe recipe for Giordano’s now-famous stuffed pizza is one that has evolved over 200 years. The double crusted cheese-stuffed pies are truly masterpieces and take over 30 minutes to bake, so plan accordingly! Thomas Weaver, the awesome assistant GM, knew we were on a mission to discover the best pepperoni pizza around these parts, and he proceeded to show us exactly what differentiates Giordano’s from the rest.

Not to be mistaken for pan or deep-dish, this is a stuffed pizza pie! What went into making our stuffed pepperoni pie? First, fresh dough is laid on a 2” buttered pan. Next, 14 oz. of fresh, in-house cut pepperoni and 16 oz. of fresh melt-in-your-mouth mozzarella from happy cow country, Wisconsin! Add their light sauce and another layer of fresh dough, then bake. This ooey-gooey, double crusted concoction is what has earned Giordano’s its title as “Chicago’s Best Pizza” by NBC, The Today Show, Chicago Tribune, The New York Times and more! AMORE!

It seems like every day in social media, you hear it’s one national day or another…National Doughnut Day, National Cheeseburger Day, National Margarita Day. When we heard National Pepperoni Pizza Day was coming up, we decided we could not let this one go by without celebration! We’ve gone on pub crawls before, but we decided to create our own crawl…a pepperoni pizza crawl around Indy, aka #peppcrawl2015!!

When it comes to pizza, I think we would all agree that it is one of our favorite foods. It contains all the food groups, so in itself, it is a complete meal, right??? Our group did a little bit of research and narrowed down our crawl to the top six pizza spots on the northside of Indianapolis. Then we teamed up with Monarch Beverages who provided us with their Coors Light RV to drive us safely because let’s face it, beer and pizza just go together!

Our shenanigans began with choosing a leader for our peppcrawlers, creating a Facebook event and then inviting our fellow lovers of pepperoni pizza to join us in celebrating National Pepperoni Pizza Day! Our mission: visit six popular pizza joints on the northside on September 20 and see who reigns supreme as the winner of the best pepperoni pizza.

Our leader created score sheets for us where we rated each location’s pepperoni pizza

based on the following criteria: crust flavor and structure, sauce flavor and quantity, pepperoni quality and quantity, and cheese quality and quantity.

We all met up early and boarded our RV. We were briefed on the mission and scoring sheets. Without further ado, we headed out in grand fashion to Broad Ripple and our first stop of the day, Union Jack Pub.

UNION JACK PUB – BROAD RIPPLELocated in the heart of Broad Ripple Village, this English pub with an American twist is famous for its award-winning deep dish pizza, Shrimp Bloody Marys and 21 rotating taps of your favorite beers. Since we were on a schedule, we just ordered the UJ Authentic Regular-Style Pepperoni Pizza.

UJP has several pizza sauces to choose from including their signature Italian tomato, chunky sweet, Napa tomato, sweet BBQ, Italian pesto and Buffalo hot sauce! Wow! We’d never seen so many sauces! They also have all kinds of cheeses to choose from including blended mozzarella, provolone, feta, white ricotta, cheddar, cottage cheese (what??), pepper jack, swiss and bleu cheese crumbles! Whew, that was exhausting!

Bottom line at Union Jack, whatever you order, we are certain it’ll be DELIZIOSO! We headed out the door and down the street to our second stop.

Page 47: Geist Magazine November 2015

Stuffed as we were, we had to continue our quest for the best pepperoni pizza! Next stop…Castleton and Ale Emporium!

ALE EMPORIUMMany in Indianapolis say that not only is AE the home of “honest pizza,” it’s also some of the best around. With your choice of pan style, regular style or thin style pizza, you’re sure to be satisfied! Their dough is made fresh as are their sauces!

We chose the regular style pepperoni pizza and were not disappointed. The crust was light and crispy, and the pepps were anything but regular! They use massive pepperoni slices which are sure to please the most discriminating of pepp lovers. The atmosphere here can’t be beat. AE is extremely popular, and their outside seating complete with fire pits and outdoor furniture is very inviting. OTTIMA PIZZA!

We caught up with a few extra peppcrawlers at the Ale and boarded our ride for the next stop…Chuck E. Cheese! Why not, folks? They serve pepperoni pizza and beer

too! Imagine the fun you could have with a crowd of your best friends at Chuck E. Cheese?? I’m not saying we did that or anything, but imagine!! Haha! Time to head towards Fishers and check out Rockstone. Roll call!! Our fearless leader had his hands full at this point!

ROCKSTONE PIZZERIA AND PUBRockstone is a locally owned and operated pizzeria and pub serving wood-fired pizzas. The wood-fired oven serves their pies up HOT and FAST! The dough is made in-house, and many of their specialty items are created with house-made ingredients. The quality of their pizzas is evident! Not only did our pepperoni pizza look amazing, it was delicious! For those preferring a thinner style crust, Rockstone certainly satisfies! Not only is this pizzeria proud to be local, they’re also proud to offer 12 rotating taps on draft that are handpicked from local and regional sources.

At this point, our peppcrawlers were getting a little rowdy! We literally devoured our pepperoni pizzas as if we hadn’t been eating all day, washed them down with our fav

local brews and tumbled out the doors to our ever-so-patient ride! Roll call, do we have everyone?! BRAVO! Our fearless leader has somehow become our most rowdy crawler!! Ooopsie!! Onwards to the last stop of our #peppcrawl2015…Saxony, we’re coming for ya!

SOUTH OF CHICAGO PIZZA – FISHERSLocated in the quaint ever-popular Saxony development, South of Chicago Pizza offers everything from deep dish pies to the thinnest crust possible! Their super friendly staff is committed to your best pizza experience! Local ingredients, fresh dough and toppings are what make the pizzas here scrumdidiliumpcious!

Want something that’s not on the menu? Just ask for it! These kind folks literally baked us a gluten-free pepperoni pizza for one of our crawlers, and it sure wasn’t on the menu! Not only were the pizzas super cheesy and tasty, but the buttery crust was one of our top favorites. The atmosphere and company were PERFETTO!

Chalene Braun and Rachel Quade hit all the popular pizza parlors around Indy, rounding out their pepperoni tour at South of Chicago Pizza in Saxony.

We met up with about five more late crawlers at South of Chicago and finished our day laughing and celebrating our quest for the best pepperoni pizza around! Truly a memorable day was had by all.

With over 175 days recognizing food and drink in the U.S. as National Days, it’s hard not to find something to celebrate!

Hmmmm…we’re feeling a little rumbly in the tummy. Isn’t National Donut Day just around the corner? Oh, SNAP! It’s November 4! Yep, there’s a day for that!

As always, SALUTI and go create your own crawl…BUON APPETITIO!!!…
