Gypsy Chicks is a women’s clothing shop that offers clothes of all shapes and sizes as well as jewelry and other women’s accessories. Owner Gina Kammerer has a background in social work, and firmly believes that every woman deserves to look and feel beautiful in whatever she wears. The shop opened in November 2015 and has been attracting women into it’s doors with it’s iconic pink toilet outside the entrance. Gina opened up the shop in Fortville because she loves the closeness that the small town has to offer.

Best of What’s Around is a boutique that sells home decor, vintage furniture, and designer paints. To go along with their designer paints, the shop offers painting classes once a month. You can sign up for a class online at bestofwhatsaroundshop.com/Events-Painting-Workshops. Owner Danie opened the shop in Jan 2015 after having a boutique in Fishers for two years. She simply needed more space, so she moved her boutique to Downtown Fortville and Best of What’s Around has been thriving ever since.

Simply More is a home decor shop as well as a small boutique. They sell country chic style furniture, along with multitudes of locally made items such as art, photography prints, and soy candles. Owners Heather Lee and Cindy Dearth opened Simply More on New Year’s Eve of 2015, and decided to settle their shop in Fortville to give life back to the community that they love. In the future, the shop would like to continue featuring more local artists and putting their products out for the public to enjoy.

Red Banana is a shop that prides

themselves on handmade products

that are not made by big-name

brands. They sell jewelry, dishware,

art and home decor that comes from

organizations that give back to a

good cause. Owner Tammy McKnight

opened the original Red Banana

in Greenfield in 2015, and recently

opened up a second shop in Fortville

after waiting for years for the town to

pick up.

Kewpie’s Kloset is a children’s boutique that offers children’s clothes and hair accessories, as well as children’s play furniture and sewing classes for ages six and up. Owner Andrea McCauhgey opened up the boutique in June 2015, and got the name for the shop from vintage dolls called Kewpie Dolls that she collects. Kewpie’s Kloset products are either locally and handmade, or bought on websites like Etsy, ultimately eliminating buying items from big name brands.

At Home With Us is a shop that provides mostly home decor, but sells flowers and other gardening supplies. The shop originally had a home in Noblesville, then moved to Fortville in July 2015 after Kathy Blake took over as the owner. Kathy decided to move At Home With Us Fortville to not only downsize from her three floored shop in Noblesville, but also because she likes the other merchants in Fortville and how they all support one another.

Brawner’s Greenhouse is a small greenhouse just across the railroad track at E Broadway St. They sell eggs, flowers, fresh veggies and fairy gardening supplies and sets. Owner Gail opened the greenhouse in 1979, and likes being in Fortville because she enjoys the country life. Brawner’s offers Fairy Garden workshops for $65, where you can learn how to put together a fairy garden and receive $50 worth of fairy garden supplies while you’re at it.

reNEW is a shop that specializes in repurposing and restoring old pieces of wood, scrap metal and anything else you can think of into one unique pieces of art. Their products range from tables made from reclaimed wood to wall art made from scrap metal. Owner Jason Miller opened the shop originally as a workshop, then began his retail business in January of 2015 after seeing other shops open up around the area. Custom appointments can be made.

Studio 309 is an art studio based in a small house that offers art parties to all ages. The studio offers painting lessons, as well as canvas painting, wood painting, string art and other art related activities. Open Studios are offered most Saturdays. Owner Sheri Jones opened the studio four years ago and decided to settle in Fortville because she could tell the community was going to grow into something great. Call Sheri at 317-362-4536 to schedule parties or lessons.

On April 10 while playing basketball, 24-year-old Kris “Lurch” Holland unexpectedly went into cardiac arrest. Immediately rushed to the hospital, his heart stopped a second time in the ambulance ride. On life support and in a medically induced coma, he was given a 6-10 percent chance to live.

Kris was kept at Methodist Hospital for 11 days, spending nine of those days in intensive care. After many thorough tests, it was found that he has catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT). CPVT is a condition that causes problems with ventricular rhythm and causes sudden fainting and risk of death. The chances of being diagnosed with this condition are about 1 in 10,000.

“Kris is an amazing dad and a great provider. He’s loyal, hardworking, faith-filled and really just an all-around good person,” said Maura, his fiancée and mother of their 3-year-old daughter, Naomi. “What makes Kris special is he is a walking talking miracle. There is no other explanation for his survival. Statistics prove it. We are so blessed to still have him in our lives.”

Kris’ family is accepting donations to help with the massive $50,000 out-of-pocket medical bills that they face. You can donate at crowdrise.com/the-six-percent-champ, and 10 percent of the funds raised will go to Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndromes (SADS) Foundation to raise prevention and awareness for those affected by SADS conditions.

Inspired by their daughter’s successful battle with a rare form of leukemia, Tony and Lori Petrucciani are hosting Leuk-Out, a Swimathon at Hillcrest Country Club.

Samantha is the oldest of Tony and Lori’s four children. When Sami was 11, she developed a persistent fever. Tests soon confirmed her diagnosis; Sami had a rare and aggressive form of leukemia. After four months of intensive chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant in which her father, Tony, was the donor, Sami continued 16 months of being homebound due to the immune suppression medication. Sami and her family are now celebrating 11 years of her being cancer-free.

As with any celebration, a party has been orchestrated. The event benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as well as the Hillcrest Historic Foundation. Sami, who is now 23, came up with the name “Leuk-Out,” short for “Knock Leukemia Out” as it sounds a bit like “luau.”

Tony designed the fundraiser based on one he had participated in as a kid which was also held at Hillcrest. “I asked for sponsorship pledges for each lap I swam to raise money for a charity,” recalls Tony. “The kid who raised the most money won a bicycle, and I really wanted to win!”

As Tony was getting ready to start swimming his laps, his dad was heading out to play golf with a friend, Mr. Alden, who is still an active member at Hillcrest Country Club. Tony was able to get one last pledge before the swimming started. Mr. Alden agreed to pay Tony $1 per lap. Tony was elated, for most of his other pledges were for a penny or a nickel per lap.

After completing the first nine holes, Mr. Alden discovered Tony was still swimming. At the end of the golf game, Mr. Alden was greeted by Tony who proudly announced he swam 300 laps. Needless to say, Tony won the bicycle, and to this day, when Tony sees Mr. Alden at Hillcrest, the two joke about that fundraiser.

The 11-mile swim portion of the event will be done in teams with pledges accepted. In addition to the swimathon, the poolside party will be luau-themed, and the band Greta Speaks will perform.

Hillcrest Historic Foundation was created to support the preservation of Hillcrest Country Club which was built in 1927. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The entire club was certified as a Historic District.

For further information, please visit leukout2016.auction-bid.org or call Tony at 317-596-3000, x115.

Want to change the world? Read on! Meet Colleen and Colleen, partners/owners of Mama Said Tees, a T-shirt brand that is so much more than prints on cotton. Mama Said Tees offers customers around the world cute tees branded with phrases of kindness, love and compassion.

Colleen and Colleen want to redefine the way society views “normal,” proving different is normal. They’re business partners by choice and friends by coincidence. They are changing the world one person as a time because they are brilliantly kindhearted.

Colleen O’Malia Stine is a Carmel native born and raised. A self-proclaimed “Hoosier through and through,” Colleen S. graduated from Cathedral, headed out of state for five quick years and now is back and ready to generate some conversation, one changed life at a time. She is the creative, doing designs and handling social media and marketing as they grow!

Colleen Berkowitz hails from Wisconsin but resides in Lake Forest, Illinois, which is north of Chicago. She’s the business behind their operation as well as office manager, order taker, packer and the list goes on and on.

Colleen S. started a business on Etsy called CoCo Stine Designs, making prints and invitations. As luck would have it, Colleen B. was one of her best customers, and that’s how the Colleens met. It was a match made in heaven and has blossomed into a beautiful partnership.

Shortly after launching Mama Said Tees, the unspeakable happened. Grab a tissue…actually grab the entire box. Colleen S. describes it as “unthinkable,” recalling, “I was giving my babies a bath and saw that I had two missed calls: one from my mom and one from my dad. I was hurrying with the bath because we had a contest I had to promptly post about for our brand new little company, but I figured if they both called, it might be important.“

What I heard on the other end of the line is something I wish I couldn’t remember. My sister was killed by my ex-brother-in-law. And then he killed himself. She was my best friend in the world. Talk about life handing you lemons. But if there are two things I will always do because of my sister, they are 1) always have a heart of gold and 2) look at the glass half full. In this case, it took a bit of time to even find the glass, but once I did, we filled it to the brim. We have made the sweetest lemonade.”

Their mission is for conversations to be ignited by each T-shirt they sell. Their shirts have messages including “Be nice,” “Be a good friend,” “Be true to you,” “Normal” and so many more that truly motivate and encourage. But why stop there?

Having now been influenced myself to the core by their inspiring campaign, I urge you to watch their YouTube video (“Let’s Redefine Normal”) that beautifully describes their operation of love. This video is meant to be watched not only by you but with your family, friends and your children.

Colleen S. explains how parents and caregivers can teach their children through

this video saying, “You can talk about it. You can ask them if there are any kids at school who have physical ‘differences.’ You can discuss a plan on how to put the ‘I’ in kind and treat others the way you want to be treated.” Their message is a touching one and wildly successful!

Finding motivation amidst the pain, Colleen B. suggested Colleen S. create a shirt in honor of her sister, Shannon’s, boys and use the proceeds towards the success of their future. This campaign was a huge success and raised over $15,000 in a very short time span.

They are firing on all cylinders and business is taking off. Celebrity endorsements have started coming in as well! A welcome surprise for Colleen and Colleen whose grassroots campaign has now reached the hearts of both Beverly Mitchell (aka “Lucy” from “7th Heaven”), Lydia McLaughlin (“The Real Housewives of Orange County”) and Tori Spelling.

So I ask again, do you want to change the world? Support these amazing women and their beautiful message by visiting their website, mamasaidtees.com. In the words of Colleen and Colleen, “Let’s redefine normal!”

TALBOT STREET ART FAIR

June 11-12 Herron-Morton Place Saturday: 10am-6pm Sunday: 10am-5pm talbotstreet.org Find on

The Talbot Street Art Fair is the longest running outdoor art fair in central Indiana. Since its beginning in 1956, organizers have strived to make each year better than before.

Celebrating this year its 61st year, the fair features over 250 artists both locally and from across the United States. The artists converge on Talbot Street between 16th and 20th Streets to present their work in many mediums. These include sculpture, glass, painting, jewelry, photography, ceramics, wood, printmaking, mixed media and fiber.

The host neighborhood, Herron-Morton Place, invites several food venues to the site, so refreshments can be purchased while

viewing the art. This is a family-friendly event, and as always, the admission is free!

The fair will be held, rain or shine. Since most artists travel with solid tent protection, this allows the event to master the weather. Many good conversations have been held in artists’ tents during a rain shower.

This year’s fair will be held June 11-12. Hours on Saturday are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hours on Sunday are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Talbot Street Art Fair provides scholarship programs to various educational institutions in the fine art disciplines.

For more information about the fair, please visit talbotstreet.org.

Celebrating the amazing history of military aviation, the 2016 CAF Warbird Expo will be held June 18 with special events the day before. The 2016 CAF Warbird Expo has moved to Indianapolis Regional Airport, formerly known as Mt. Comfort Airport.

Last year had close to 10,000 attendees. “Parking was definitely a challenge,” says Van Zant. “Indianapolis Regional Airport has ample space for parking; however, we are encouraging attendees to load up their cars with their family and friends and buy their parking pass early to ensure a spot.”

The CAF Warbird Expo was started by

the Commemorative Air Force with the purpose to honor our military veterans and celebrate our rich history of aviation. The CAF also raises money and awareness for the preservation of these historic Warbird planes with the ultimate goal of building a local interactive aviation museum.

The CAF is a national organization with a strong presence throughout the Midwest. They run many of the largest air shows across the country.

CAF Warbird Expo Chairman Mark Van Zant, a U.S. Air Force veteran who served for 10 years, earned his degree in aviation

and started his own business after serving his country. A Highland High School graduate, Van Zant had an early love of aviation and earned his pilot’s license while he was in high school.

“Event Chair Mark Van Zant has done an amazing job of planning the relocation of CAF Warbird Expo to Indy Regional Airport, leading a large team of volunteers and partnering with more universities and nonprofits in order to expand the event and better achieve our goals of honoring veterans, remembering military aviation history and inspiring youth,” shares CAF Wing Leader Dennis Schell.

This year, the CAF Warbird Expo has partnered with Indy Honor Flight. A plane pull is one of the new activities added to the events calendar during the air show. “We have teams and individuals who will work together to pull a plane with a rope, much like a strong man’s competition,” shares Van Zant. “The funds go to honoring veterans and sharing their stories.”

The weekend kicks off with a Hops and Props event on Friday night sponsored by Hotel Tango Artisan Distillery from 6-9 p.m. The evening will include music from the 1940s along with professional ballroom dancers performing choreography indicative of the era. Many WWII re-enactors will be mingling with the crowd, and there will be 28 tables displaying WWII Museum artifacts. The event will also feature local breweries and food.

Saturday highlights include the CAF Red Tail Squadron celebrating the history of the Tuskegee Airmen. A movie will be shown documenting their story, and a former Tuskegee pilot will be speaking.

“This is a marvelous traveling museum,” shares Van Zant. “A 53’ semi trailer has a theater inside where attendees can sit, watch and listen to the history of these amazing men. The crew that travels with this exhibit is incredible. It’s not to be missed.”

The Red Tail Squadron exhibit will be available both Friday evening and all day Saturday.

The CAF Warbird Expo is interactive with a strong focus on involving children and STEM. The day-long kids camp held on Friday sold out months in advance. However, on Saturday, there are plenty of engineering, weather and navigation activities for kids to explore a variety of options to peak their curiosity about aviation. Purdue University, Vincennes University and Indiana State University will have simulators

and activities for kids designed to introduce a new generation to aviation.

“This is a mini-air show with the real experience happening on the ground. Although we will have some planes in the air and rides available, the skies will have

non-aerobatic action,” says Van Zant. “There is a lot that’s going on, and we are definitely family-focused.”

Although admission is free, there is a fee for parking. Passing can be purchased online at warbirdexpo.com.

As we reach a certain age, people mistakenly feel that having joint stiffness and pain are a normal part of the aging process, but delaying treatment can actually cause further damage to your joints. Whether you have suffered a traumatic accident, have arthritis or a sports-related injury, you owe it to yourself to find a highly-skilled orthopedic joint specialist. Indiana University Health Saxony Hospital Orthopedics & Sports Medicine offers a Joint Replacement Program that is nationally and internationally recognized for its care, skill, research and positive patient outcomes.

COMPREHENSIVE CARE, BEST OUTCOMESDr. Michael Meneghini, the Director of Orthopedics & Joint Replacement at IU Health Saxony Hospital and also an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery with IU School of Medicine, explains that the focus of their practice is to provide a high level of patient coordination so that patients can focus on their recovery. “We discuss every patient and offer the highest level of coordination of care unlike most places,” he says. That means that from the initial consultation to everyone involved in your care, whether it be the therapist, social worker, internists, surgeons,

anesthesiologists and nurses participates, in weekly meetings. Patients do not have to repeat their story to every caregiver because they have already discussed it before you even arrive. This not only helps the patient experience but also minimizes errors and assists in assuring positive patient outcomes.

TEACHING THE NEXT GENERATIONDr. Meneghini says, “Patients from throughout the country come to us for routine first time hip and knee replacements but also for corrective surgeries for procedures that were previously done and have not had a good outcome or their device is not working as it should be.” This customer-focused practice is obviously resonating with patients because their practice attracts patients from throughout the United States with the heaviest concentration from Indiana, Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky.

With this level of specialty, Dr. Meneghini states that the surgeons have “chosen to be super specialists in hip and knee replacement.” Their commitment is so strong, he states, “If we are not performing those two surgeries, we are doing research, and we are the only fellowship program in the state of Indiana.” The fellowship

program is growing with 80 applicants from all over the U.S. vying for only two spots. One applicant from Switzerland has chosen Saxony over Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins, solidifying their growing national reputation.

NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED PROGRAM IN YOUR BACKYARDWith four surgeons and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons, the program is also being recognized nationally and internationally. Saxony is ranked #2 in the United States by the UHC (University Healthsystem Consortium) database–which includes world-renowned hospitals such as Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins–for length of stay. The key outcomes that the government and insurance companies are looking for are length of stay, meaning how long you stay in the hospital, and whether you have to be readmitted. And while it is important to get patients back to their normal schedules as quickly as possible, it must be done safely to ensure that their patients don’t return to the hospital due to complications.

Alex Koenig was the subject of a LearningRx Business Spotlight story in the June 2013 issue of the Fishers Community Newsletter. Many things have changed since then. The magazine is now called the Fishers Magazine, Alex is now 10 years old and in the fourth grade and due directly to the remarkable results Alex’s mother, Heather, saw in her daughter after completing the Learning Rx program Heather now owns the Learning Rx office.

In the 2013 story, Heather described Alex before the Learning Rx experience as follows: “At school and home, Alex was experiencing a kind of data disconnect. She would listen as her teacher or gymnastics coach rattled off instructions, but then finish only part of a task. This processing malfunction led to confusion, followed by embarrassment and acting out in class.”

After Alex completed the Learning Rx program, Heather noted in the 2013 story, the changes she saw in Alex’s cognitive skills. “The teacher now knows she gets the full set of instructions. The skills were already there, she just needed to get to them.”

The important thing to understand is that the improvement Heather saw in Alex in 2013 has remained with Alex today. According to Heather, “Today, Alex’s grades are strong and she is learning concepts that

she would have never been able to absorb if we had not completed the LearningRx training. While her report cards are good, more importantly, she understands information and is able to remember it. Alex now has the confidence that whatever the challenge, she can do it. Learning and homework take less than half the time than it used to so she has more free time to do fun things and be a kid. She feels proud of herself and her accomplishments. I’ve never heard her say, “I’m just stupid,” again. Our family dynamics at home changed dramatically. Because Alex is now able to understand and process information, she no longer gets angry easily which means our home is more peaceful.”

After Heather became the new owner of LearningRx, she gave Alex another cognitive skills assessment to see where her skills were. Heather noted, “ I was amazed to see that her cognitive skills, like memory and processing speed, had continued to increase 3 years out of her program. I now know that she will be able to reach any goal she puts her sight on for her career and college. If we had done nothing, she would still be struggling and, by this time, she would probably be giving up in frustration.”It’s not just Heather that has seen the changes in Alex. According to Alex, “LearningRx has made me feel confident about myself. I feel smarter than before and I can remember things I learn and when

Mom asks me to do things. I understand things now so I don’t have to feel mad anymore. I don’t feel stupid anymore. Now I can be a Veterinarian”.

What makes LearningRx different from traditional tutoring and what convinced Heather to buy the LearningRx office is that the training clients receive at LearningRX fundamentally changes the way they process information and so it continues to help them long after the program is finished. Rather than tutoring on a particular subject, the LearningRx program provides a cognitive framework that people can use for the rest of their lives.

According to Heather, “Many learning problems are caused by inefficiencies in how the brain actually processes information, things like memory attention and processing speed. We aren’t tutoring which will only offer temporary help if there are underlying cognitive deficiencies. We are brain trainers offering a solution to learning.”

As mentioned earlier, Heather was so impressed with what LearningRx did for her daughter, Alex, she bought the business. Heather and her staff have a real passion for helping people who have learning and reading struggles. When you choose to get help through LearningRx, you get the same life changing solution that Heather provided for her daughter back in 2013.

Fishers residents (and husband/wife team) Ryan and Lauren Ahlwardt are bringing back your favorite ’90s soundtrack and give you permission to dance your face off!

It was no ordinary night on May 13 at Bella Vita on Geist. Not only was it Friday the 13th, but what started as a busy Friday night dinner rush evolved into a full out ’90s dance party by the end of Mixtape’s first song. It was on!

Mixtape is not your normal cover band. Although they play all your favorite songs from the ’90s and rock a set list that will handily put any Pandora ’90s channel to shame, it’s the true musical talent and quirky performance aspect of Mixtape, complete with costumes and choreography, that really had me buying in to what they were selling: the best damn party band in Indy.

Mixtape is the creation of Jason Hayes of The Flying Toasters fame, another well-followed party band in the Indy area. Jason is also the worship leader at Geist Christian Church on Promise Road in Fishers, which is where he crossed paths with Ryan and Lauren who sang in the worship band as well as several other members of the band including keyboard player Greg McGuirk and guitar player Jacob Brown. The current band is rounded out by vocalist Brian Kelly and bass player Randy Melson.

Hayes put the idea of forming a band out to the Ahlwardts a while ago as he was continually having to turn down great gigs for The Flying Toasters because they were already booked. He saw the opportunity – if he could get the right collection of talent and chemistry together

to create a new band that could bring another great party to the community. He’s achieved that with Mixtape as witnessed at their first public performance as a band at Bella Vita that Friday night. For Ryan and Lauren, performing as part of Mixtape is realizing one of their marriage “bucket list” goals that they have in their own handwriting hanging in a frame over their bed: to create and perform together. Each of them are accomplished musicians and performers in their own right. Ryan was a member of Straight No Chaser, both the IU version and the world-renowned international touring version, and Lauren was a member of the IU female a cappella group Ladies First.

The two met through their love of singing and performing while students at IU in Bloomington, and it’s something they’ve continued to enjoy doing as a couple since marrying and becoming parents to their daughter Olivia. Date night now often consists of seeking out a fun karaoke spot and spending the evening singing together and entertaining friends.

They see being in Mixtape together as a dream realized and a continued blessing that allows them to do what they are both passionate about doing and also getting to do it by each other’s side. It’s the best possible scenario for the music-loving Ahlwardts.

When asked how it felt to be back in a collaborative musical environment after a long hiatus, Lauren says, “It is a dream come true. No kidding. I get to sing all these awesome songs, these musicians are all amazing and so talented, and the icing on the cake is that Ryan is right beside me.”

Ryan echoes Lauren’s sentiments and adds that for him, getting to perform these great songs and be their goofy selves, complete with Napoleon Dynamite-worthy dance sequences with his bride, is really a highlight. When asked what Ryan thinks of having Lauren to perform with this time around as he takes the stage, he says with the greatest tone of appreciation in his voice, “Lauren is Super Mom by day and a shiny pant-wearing rock star by night!”

Ryan and Lauren hope that this is just the start of something great here in the Indy area and that Mixtape will soon be a name that is synonymous with fun, unique, truly entertaining performances, and above all, great music. With Bel Biv Devoe, No Doubt, Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears tunes packing the dance floor in just the first 20 minutes of their debut performance, I’d say they are well on their way to claiming their title as the best ’90s party band in the city.

Mixtape is currently booking clubs, weddings and corporate events. For booking inquiries, email [email protected]. Keep up with all their upcoming performances on Facebook or follow them on Instagram and Twitter @mixtapeindy.

JEFF FREEMAN

CEO of Heritage Christian Honors His Calling

Writer / Janet C. Striebel . Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Jeff Freeman, a Fishers resident in Windermere, serves as a passionate leader at Heritage Christian School (HCS). He left the corporate world to become the CEO of HCS where he continues to offer his business expertise while perpetuating the pursuit of academic excellence within a Christian framework.

Page 48: Geist Magazine June 2016

As a CPA with former experience at Ernst & Young, he humbly refers to himself as a “recovering accountant.” He worked as an insurance executive at Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance for over 20 years with multiple roles, including Controller, Chief Financial Officer, Senior Vice President of mergers/acquisitions and strategic planning and lastly, Chief Operation Officer of Countryway Insurance Company, one of IFBI’s acquisitions.

“It’s amazing that God can use ordinary people for His purposes when you’re called and obedient. I was approaching 50 when I felt like God wanted to use me in some form of ministry,” says Freeman who has been on staff with HCS for six years.

In actuality, he’s been familiar with the culture of HCS for many more years, considering his three children have all graduated from HCS and his wife Kim Freeman (fourth grade teacher) has taught there for 25 years.

In summer of 2010, he became the athletic director, merging his management ability

and athletic experience from when he played basketball at Anderson University.

Two years later, the head of school position opened, and he became the CEO, using his skillset of leadership experience.

“Jeff has played an instrumental role in leading Heritage through difficult economic times,” says Brenda Klingerman, HCS Elementary School Principal and Academic Director. “He has worked hard to build trust within the community and leads with integrity and an intentional focus on the mission of the school. There is no doubt that God has directed Jeff ’s path to lead our school for just this time in our history. God’s hand is all over it!”

The value proposition of Heritage is made up of three benefits: college prep academics, Christian discipleship and robust extracurricular activities.

“We integrate the Bible into everything we do, even outside of the classroom with sports, fine arts and clubs such as robotics,” says Freeman.

Recently, HCS participated in the Purdue University STEM go-karting race at the International Motor Speedway. Coincidentally, senior Christian Daly, who drove the go-kart, is a brother to Conor Daly, the driver of the #18 car in the Indy 500 race.

HCS is celebrating its 50th anniversary as it graduated its 50th class in May. The senior class, made up of 110 students, progressed from the largest K-12 Christian school in the state.

“Heritage is unique in how it offers a big-school approach and opportunities in a small-school environment,” says Freeman who is excited about raising the bar by pursuing excellence in every area.

This small-school culture allows students to be involved in multiple activities simultaneously. For instance, a student may meet the demands of playing basketball and yet star in the high school play. Furthermore, students receive personalized attention infused with a biblical worldview that’s graciously instilled in them from all

Page 49: Geist Magazine June 2016

faculty, coaches and administration.

Freeman has a knack of making valuable connections. He not only unites his business sense with the academic and discipleship domains but also works hard to relate to everyone he encounters.

“Heritage Christian is blessed to have Jeff Freeman as our CEO. He leads with great competence, character and humility,” says Doug Waltz, HCS Chairman of the Board of Directors. “That combination is powerful in any setting but especially so in the educational arena. He does an incredible job of connecting with the Board, our faculty and staff, parents, alumni and students. His willingness to invest in those relationships and remain true to our mission has been a key enabler of our success in delivering excellence in Christian education.”

HCS educates students from Prep K-12 and is now offering pre-school for 3-year-olds. Visit the Open House June 7 at 4 p.m. or June 23 at 5:30 p.m.

To learn more, go to heritagechristian.net or call 317-849-3441.

Freeman closes on this doctrine, “At HCS, we’re preparing the path for the next 50 years, cultivating the next generation of leaders to impact the world for Christ.”

Janet C. Striebel is a Fishers resident and freelance writer. She and her husband, Doug, have three children: Ryan, Jessica and Justin. She has been writing for the TownePost

Network for more than seven years and claims that the best part is meeting all the interesting people in her community.

“IT’S AMAZING THAT GOD CAN USE ORDINARY PEOPLE FOR HIS PURPOSES WHEN YOU’RE CALLED AND OBEDIENT.

I WAS APPROACHING 50 WHEN I FELT LIKE GOD WANTED TO USE ME IN SOME FORM OF MINISTRY.” - Jeff Freeman
