Fall Fest Contest Day!
Annual Fall Fest Contest Day is coming up fast! This contest day will include:
all cookery contests, sewing/clothing contests, ambassador talks, consumer decision
making, and consumer foods judging. Rules for each contest can be found online, on
our Facebook page, last month’s Cloverleaf, or in your leader’s handbook!

Registration begins at 8:30AM, contests begin at 9:00AM

DIVE INTO FASHION! Each year the State Fashion Board hosts a Fashion Camp at Camp
Grant Walker. This camp is chance for you to learn all about fashion, NO SEWING SKILLS REQUIRED!
When: January 24—26, 2020
Where: Camp Grant Walker, Pollock, LA
Who: Campers ages 10-13 years old
Maximum of 2 campers, a waiting list will be kept.
One adult is required to attend. Transportation not provided.

HOW TO PULL A DNA SAMPLE FROM YOUR LIVESTOCK PROJECT
1. Record the ear tag number given to identify the animal on the hair sample envelope. Clean
the sample area to remove dirt or other contaminates. Use bent, long or needle nose pli-
ers to collect the sample.
2. Pull a tuft of hair from the leg, just above the toes. Pull the hair directly away from the
skin, NOT at an angle. This will allow the root to come out with the hair. Pull at least twice.
3. Inspect the hair sample to ensure at least 30 follicles are present. The roots are easy to see
in goats but difficult in sheep. In sheep you may notice a color variation which indicates
that the root is intact.
4. Place the sample in the hair sample envelope and then seal in the presence of the exhibi-
tor and parent/supervisory. Do not put hairs in a plastic bag.
5. Fill out the remaining information lines on the envelope and have witnesses sign.
6. REMEMBERS: clean hands and pliers between samples to ensure that hairs from different
animals are not mixed.

Livestock Exhibitors! Get Ready For The Spring Shows:
Are you planning to show animals at the Parish, Dis-
trict, and State Livestock Shows? Animals to be shown at the parish, district, or LSU
shows must be in your possession and under your care before the following dates:
Miniature Cattle—November 11, 2019 Commercial Heifers and Beef Breeding— November 4, 2019 Dairy Commercial Heifers, and Dairy Breeding— November 4, 2019 Market Lambs, Commercial Ewes, and Breeding Sheep—
November 4, 2019 Market Goats, Commercial Does, and Breeding Goats—
November 4, 2019 Market Hogs, Commercial Gilts, and Breeding Gilts—
December 2, 2019 Meat Pen Rabbits—Own does by October 15, 2019 Breeding Rabbits—December 2, 2019
Anyone planning to show broilers at the parish or LSU
show must notify the 4-H office by November 1 so the broiler chicks can be ordered from the hatchery.
There will be NO validation days held by the 4-H office this year. Please pick up your validation kits at the 4-H office to validate at home. If you need assistance please
contact Mrs. Jennifer or Mr. Kyndal. 2019 Validation fee is $7 per validation. This fee will be collected when
exhibitors submit their validation to the Parish Office, and are due by 4:30PM on the final day of Possession All
checks should be made out to Calcasieu Parish Livestock
Hardship Statement
Hardship forms are available in the 4-H office and re-quired when and unforeseen circumstance keeps you
from validating your animals, OR if you do not have the means the house your animals on your own property.
Hardship forms will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Livestock and Horse Judging and Showmanship Clinics

show is looking for, then we have the perfect clinic for you!
Learn all about livestock evaluation during the livestock judging clinic and contest day!
Also on this day will be the livestock showmanship clinic.
Remember that attendance will count as points toward premier
exhibitor contest during the Parish Livestock Show. If you have any questions please contact Mrs.

Decorate your gingerbread house at home and bring the day of contest to be judged! Winner will receive a special 4-H prize!
What Can I Demonstrate at Demonstration Day? Determining the topic of a demonstration can be the most
difficult part of giving a demonstration. The following are some tips for selecting a demonstration topic:
Any interesting subject that will be practical and useful to the audience.
Subjects you know something about. Topics that can be demonstrated - you can actually show
how to make or do. Subjects you believe in.
Subjects you are comfortable with. Subjects that are a challenge for you or that you want to
learn how to do.
Choosing a topic!
You can get ideas for demonstration topics from several sources:
4-H projects Hobbies
Science fair projects Things going on in your neighborhood
Books, magazines, television, newspaper People who are good at their professions – nurses,
firemen, lawyers, carpenters, etc.
Demo Categories:
Agriculture Individual or Team: may include livestock and crop production, conservation of natural resources, wildlife management, marine
science, Ag engineering, horticulture, forestry, etc. Examples include: care of lawn equipment, cleaning a saddle, how to plant potatoes, groom-
ing a dog, starting an insect collection, etc.
Home Economics Individual or Team: Examples include: cleaning and maintaining a sewing machine, making a first aid kit, making slime, re-
moving stains from clothing, etc. Subjects may include: family life, health, safety, housing, house furnishings, clothing. (DOES NOT INCLUDE FOOD
DEMONSTRATION)
General Individual or Team: Demos may NOT be related to other categories such as any food demonstrations, energy management, horticul-
ture, small engines, etc. Examples of topics include: how to track a hurricane, using a computer, making a necklace, braiding hair, etc.
Foods Individual or Team: Contestants must give a method demonstration on the preparation of the food dish. This category includes demon-
strations in rice cookery, fruits and vegetables, breads, dairy, etc.
Horse Individual or Team: Junior (13 and under) and Senior (14 and over) May be a demonstration or illustrated presentation. Team members
may be from different clubs. Subject MUST pertain to the horse industry. Live animals can be used (contact 4-H Office). Winners qualify for the
LSU State Horse Show in July. If using live animals you are required to inform the 4-H Office ahead of the contest.
