CLOVERLEAF NEWS FROM SNOHOMISH COUNTY WSU EXTENSION •MAY 2013 Washington State University Extension helps people develop leadership skills and use research-based knowledge to improve their economic sta- tus and quality of life. Cooperating agencies: Washington State University, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Snohomish County. Extension programs and employment are available to all without discrimination. Evidence of noncompliance may be reported through your local Extension office. Jana S. Ferris County Extension Faculty Remarks from the Park... Kudos To the 4-H youth who taught the ART Sparks workshop to other youth after helping to lead their groups through the Seattle Art Museum. To all of the Goat, Sheep, Poultry, and Beef presenters for the wonderful job that they did in teaching the public at the Livestock 101 workshop. To the Horse Bowl teams for the great job they did at State. To the Robotics teams and work- ing out their challenges at the big competition. First of all, I am happy to say that I am back—nearly full time and just waiting doctor approval! Big kudos to Debbie, Phoebe, and Marilyn in picking up the slack while I was out. As my activities will be limited somewhat for a fairly long time, you may not see me at all events I have previously attending. Going through major medical recovery, I am reminded that we often push ourselves to do more than we are actually capable or comfortable. Continued over-doing it can lead to burn-out, frustration, and a feeling of being overwhelmed. Be sure to take time for yourself in your life; even if that means cutting back on some of your volunteer commitments. The program will benefit more from a less-stressed volunteer who really wants to be there, than from someone who develops a resentment towards their contribution. Finally, as we wind into summer and onward to fair, let’s remember that we are working with children. Some of them look and act like young adults, but they remain fragile in some areas. 4-H is meant to build youth up; we all need to ensure our planned events are put together to enhance positive experiences for youth. Sometimes, we find ourselves pressured to recruit “warm bodies” when we have openings in our needs. Without enough personnel, events often don’t go smoothly; consequently, these can lead to negative experiences for youth. I know this doesn’t happen because adults don’t want youth to have a good outcome. Rather, it may be due to inexperience, lack of pre-planning, pressure to excel, etc. My philosophy believes it is far better to cancel an event or ask someone to help you than it is to host a negative experience that might possibly cause harm to youth in the long run. If you are experiencing any of these occurrences, please let me know. I’d be glad, as would other 4-H staff, to discuss strategy to get back on the right track. Happy Summer….

Remarks from the Park... Kudos

To the 4-H youth who taught the ART Sparks workshop to other youth after helping to lead their groups through the Seattle Art Museum.

To all of the Goat, Sheep, Poultry, and Beef presenters for the wonderful job that they did in teaching the public at the Livestock 101 workshop.

To the Horse Bowl teams for the great job they did at State.

To the Robotics teams and work-ing out their challenges at the big competition.

Without enough personnel, events often don’t go smoothly; consequently, these can lead to negative experiences for

4-H License Plates Available Throughout the State…submitted by Gayle Ashworth, [email protected]

The new 4-H license plate is now available throughout Washington State.

Legislation championed by Representative and former 4-H’er Judy Warnick (R-Moses Lake) paved the way for the 4-H clover license plate which was signed into law in 2012. Plates can be purchased for $40 and $30 for renewal, in addition to the cost of standard license plates. “The specialized 4-H license plates are a great way for current 4-H families as well as alumni and supporters to increase awareness about the 4-H program as they drive across town or across the state,” said Pat BoyEs, Director, 4-H Youth Development, Washington State University Extension.

The Department of Licensing will collect the fees and deposit funds after administrative expenses into the newly created 4-H programs account in the state treasury. Money raised will go toward activities to sup-port the 90,000 youth served in the state. To get your 4-H license plate visit: http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistration/sp4h.html

RSVPs required.

More about the Sewing & Needlework program

This flyer is merely a “quick advertisement” of

the program. Sewing program members, parents, & leaders

should join the Sewing/Needlework Program Group on http://snoco4h.edmodo.com (request group code from Lynette). Announcements, complete workshop descriptions, program/club reports, polling, and Record Books are found there.

OR, e-mail Lynette ([email protected]) to be added to the Sewing & Needlework Program’s e-mail distribution list.

For workshops that involve machine-sewing, bring a working sewing machine, its manual, and sewing basket with supplies. If you do not have a sewing machine, please contact Lynette ([email protected]). We will do our best to make sure an “extra” is available.

Sewing and Needlework workshops require a considerable investment from our volunteer leaders. Therefore RSVPs are required and minimums are needed. Please honor your RSVP by following through and attending the workshop. Plus, consider bringing a friend so that we workshop “makes.”

Need to find a 4-H Sewing Club? If you are a “sewing-only” 4-H’er, you are welcome to join the Lucky Clovers. Lynette Bikos is the Club Leader. All business meetings (~30 minutes) will be jointly held with the Sewing Advisory Council during selected workshops.

be put on the e-mail distribution list and/or receive the “course catalog”):

SnoCo 4-H Sewing & Needlework Program 2012-2013

Course Catalog (and other relevant details) The 2012-13 program was created in response to many of your suggestions. Here are some of the highlights and changes for this year’s program.

4-H Sewing Workshops are open to all youth, including those who are not enrolled in 4-H. Please consider bringing a friend and distributing this flyer to friends who are not yet in 4-H.

Sewing workshops are long (most are ≥ 4 hours). Please BRING YOUR LUNCH if the workshop crosses the noon-hour; and consider volunteering for bringing “snacks to share” when workshops are primarily in the afternoon.

If we do not have sufficient enrollments by the date listed on each workshop, we will cancel the workshop. Therefore RSVPs are required and minimums are needed. Please honor your RSVP by attending the workshop in its entirety (or advising the leader of your cancellation/absence as soon as possible). Consider inviting a non 4-H friend so that the workshop “makes.”

*RSVPs should include the following information: Youth name and age, name of 4-H club (if not a 4-H member, please tell us, you can still attend!), parents’ name and phone number, e-mail address, and whether/not a parent or 4-H Club leader can volunteer.

Need to find a 4-H Sewing Club? If you are a “sewing-only” 4-H’er, you are welcome to join the Lucky Clovers. Lynette Bikos is the Club Leader. All business meetings (~30 minutes) will be jointly held with the Sewing Advisory Council during selected “Saturday Sews.” The business focus of the club is to (a) support the sewing program’s activities and (b) plan events for the following year. Members are strongly encouraged to participate in the Snohomish County Public Presentation Program (late winter/early spring of each year) and keep 4-H Record Books.

If you are a “multi-project” 4-H’er, you may find it easier to maintain a membership in another 4-H Club (for example, you might enroll in technology or rabbits through Greensleeves) and then participate in the sewing program’s activities and even on the Sewing Advisory Council.

Volunteer! The sewing and needlework program is bursting at the seams (get the pun?) with workshops and “can I participate” inquiries. In order for it to be sustained, we need your help. Please contact Lynette ([email protected]) if you can:

Assistant Leader, Lucky Clovers 4-H Club (mostly a “paperwork” and “get oriented to 4-H” job).

Assistant Leader, Snohomish County Sewing/Needlework Program (supporting program events, recruiting volunteers, developing workshops, brainstorming program improvements)

Lead a “New Sewer” workshop. This job would be perfect for senior 4-H sewers! Edmodo Record Book teachers. Once you are an enrolled 4-H volunteer, coach, encourage,

and monitor 4-Hers as they complete RB assignments and posts. Parents who are new to 4-H should plan to become an enrolled 4-H volunteer. More information is at:

Northwest Junior Sheep Exposition...submitted by Pat BoyEs, [email protected]

The 2013 Northwest Junior Sheep Exposition (NWJSE) will be held July 19-20 at the Grant County Fairgrounds in Moses Lake. The Junior Sheep Expo offers an excellent opportunity for young people from throughout the Pacific Northwest to showcase their sheep projects in a competitive, fun, and educational environment. The event will include classes for market lambs, prospect lambs, and breeding sheep. Other competitions include the Sheep Skill-A-Thon, which tests one’s knowledge and skill in sheep husbandry and educational displays. The NWJSE uses ultrasound technology and an indexed appraisal system that pro-motes a more accurate and systematic market lamb evaluation and enhances the educational experience of exhibitors and spectators.

Due to the excellent financial support of several organizations and donors, over $2,000 in cash prizes and awards will be presented. The show also precedes the Annual Ram and Ewe Sale sponsored by the Washington State Sheep Producers held on July 20 at the same location. This year will again feature a special class, Washington State Sheep Producers Show Ewe Lamb Futurity Class, for youth to purchase high quality ewe lambs to bring back and show at the 2014 show.

Exhibitors desiring to enter market lambs in the 2013 NWJSE should complete and return an entry form by May 1. The entry deadline for feeder lambs, breeding sheep, educational exhibits, and other contests is June 15.

For more information, see the event Premium book and entry forms are also available on WSU Grant-Adams Area Extension web page under “Upcoming Events.” Additional copies are also available by contacting Sarah Smith at 509-754-2011, Ext. 413 or email, [email protected] .
