PRACTICAL ADVICE FOR CHANGING TIMES

“Times change andwemust changewith them.”

Remember when you could leave your home unlocked,

your vehicle unlocked and running, and your children

could go outside and play after dark alone? You could

walk alone at night in town and not be afraid?

Nowadays, we must accept the simple fact that there is evil in theworld, and that good people have bad things done to them by badpeople.

• A school bus monitor is harassed, bullied, and threatened bymiddle-school children.

• A stranger walks up to a person in broad daylight in Dallas, shootsthem, and robs them.

• People walk into colleges, shopping malls, and restaurants andstart shooting.

• Individuals under the influence of drugs commits vicious assaults.

• Vehicles are broken into, stolen, or otherwise vandalized.

• Disgruntled spouses,“significant others”, or rejected candidatesshow up at work to vent.

“Know your enemy and know yourself, and you can fight one hundred battleswithout disaster.”

--- (Sun Tzu)

Think like the enemy!

• Could a potential threat observe you for a week and learn your dailyroutines?

• Do you post every personal detail about your day, your stops, andyour vacations on Facebook and Twitter?

• Could someone know where you are / what you are doing by simplychecking a social media site?

• Take a look at your vehicle at work – is it locked? Are the windowsopen? Are there items visible that someone could take and pawn toget money for their “fix”?

As a business owner or leader, the safety and security of your employees isa concern that each individual should take ownership in while at work, yet realize that threats and dangers still exist when they are outside ofwork. MPI’s civilian safety and self-defense classes are an option forthose individuals who would like to increase their personal safetyknowledge. Employers may choose to offer these classes to employeesat work, or at least pass the information on to those who might beinterested. An employee will respect that an employer is providing themwith this important and much-needed information.

5 LESSONS INPROTECTING YOURBUSINESS WHENYOU ARE NOT THERE.

1.Have On-Call PersonnelHaving a highly trained patrol officer keeping aneye on your business after hours, and openingor closing a business for the day are a few waysto protect your people, reduce liabilities andprotect your property.

2.Use An Alarm SystemBurglar/security alarm systems have proven toreduce the risk of business theft and loss.Yourbusiness insurance policy premiums may bereduced depending upon the type of systemyou have installed.

3.Have Surveillance CamerasThe primary purpose of installing surveillancecameras is to act as deterrence to robbers, criminals, petty thieves and unscrupulous elements fromindulging in theft, illicit and criminal activities.Cameras alert security officers about real-time thefts.

4.Double Check All Exterior DoorsA closing security check should include the entireinterior of your business so you do not lock anaspiring burglar inside. Also double check all ofthe exterior doors to make sure that there havebeen no security breaches.

5.24/7 On-site Security24 hour coverage is the best way to ensure yourbusinesses safety whether you are in the buildingor away. Gain peace of mind in the areas of fire, flood, burglary, vandalism and any legal liabilitiesyour business could potentially be exposed to.

PROTECTING AGAINST BURGLARYCriminals love an easy target. So how do you prevent “opportunity”thieves and professional burglars from seeing a bull’s-eye on yourdoor? Protect your business and reduce your vulnerability to theft byusing the Layers of Protection Approach.

The Layers of Protection Approach uses of a wide variety of securitymeasures to discourage theft. These “layers” work together to preventburglary on several levels:

• They make your business uninviting to burglars.• They make it difficult for burglars to gain entry to your business.• They increase the likelihood that a burglar will be caught.• They make it difficult for a burglar to remove valuable items.

Use a combination of the following “layers” to make your business anuninviting target for potential burglars.

Strategic Landscaping & LightingLandscaping can enhance the appearance as well as the security of yourbusiness. Avoid unusually tall plants that block visibility around doorsand windows or provide a place for burglars to hide. Burglars like towork under the cover of darkness so utilize proper lighting to ensureemployees’ safety and to create the impression that a building is highlyvisible. Replace damaged or burned-out bulbs as soon as possible. Usegates and fences to provide additional barrier to entry.

High Security LocksUse High Security Locks on both interior and exterior doors.Whileregular locks can be easily picked, High Security Locks have additionalsecurity features. They are typically made of heavier hardware withrestrictive keyways and employ pins that protrude from the side andback to add an extra dimension of security. Also, avoid using doorswith hinge pins on the outside that can be easily removed.

Alarm SystemInstalling security locks on doors is one barrier to theft. But what if anintruder manages to break in? A monitored alarm system is an effectiveway to scare an intruder away and simultaneously alert authorities and

A MANAGERS GUIDE TOEMPLOYEE SAFETY

The Law RegardingWorkplace SafetyVarious pieces of legislation have beenpassed to protect employees in the work-place. In the USA, the Occupational Safetyand Health Act 1970 puts responsibility onthe employers to ensure that all members

of staff can perform their roles and responsibilities in a safe workingenvironment.

Training & Maintenance as a Method of Preventing InjuriesTraining a workforce to identify and avoid hazards is one of the mosteffective ways in reducing the number of incidents and accidents in the

office. This training should be given by someone who is trained in healthand safety matters, and should be undertaken on a regular basis to en-sure that knowledge does not become forgotten or faded.

Some points / suggestions for employers and businesses:

Access Control / Badges /Tailgating• Do you have a system / method in place?• Who enforces the badge policies?

Visitor Policies• Do you have a system / method in place?• Are all visitors escorted by an employee?

Parking Lot Monitoring• Is a parking tag system used?• Can someone tell at a glance which vehicles do not belong?

If you answered no,

law enforcement. Prominently display signs/decals indicating an alarmsystem is present to discourage potential burglars. Consult a securityexpert to determine which system is best for your business.

Electronic Access SystemImplementing an electronic access control system (EAS) enablesa business to keep a record of who is entering a room or building, when, and how often. Such information can draw attention tosuspicious activity or help during an investigation if a securitybreach should occur. An EAS can also limit individual access tospecific rooms or buildings.

Video SurveillanceCamera systems improve your ability to monitor your premises andprovide useful evidence and information in case of theft, an accidentor any other criminal activity. In fact, the physical presence of videosurveillance equipment is often enough to deter a burglar.

Security/Risk Management PersonnelHire a professional security officer to monitor your building ratherthan recruiting a volunteer within your organization. This will helpto minimize liabilities for your business. Highly trained security officerscan assess and address the unique security needs of your business.

Employee AwarenessMake sure your employees are aware that you have multiple layers ofsecurity protection in place. Knowing your business is not an easytarget will provide a sense of security for honest employees whilediscouraging any potential criminal activity.
