DAY 2 – SATURDAY, MAY 19: ROME Arrive Rome. Transfer to Vatican-area hotel just steps from St. Peter’s Square. Free time to settle in before a late-afternoon celebration of Mass at St. Patrick’s Church, the titular parish in Rome of Cardinal Thomas Collins. Return to hotel for dinner. DAY 3 – SUNDAY, MAY 20 (Pentecost Sunday): ROME Walk to St. Peter’s Basilica. Attend invitation-only Mass expected to be celebrated by Pope Francis, followed by Papal Blessing (and plenary indulgence) in St. Peter’s Square. Afternoon tour of ancient Rome, including the Colosseum, Forum, Arches of Titus and Constantine, and other highlights. Special access to the Domitilla Catacombs, the largest catacombs in Rome, dating from the 2nd to 5th centuries. Visit the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, founded by Emperor Constantine I in the 4th century and the site where St. Paul is buried. Return to hotel for dinner. DAY 4 – MONDAY, MAY 21: ROME A full day to explore the Vatican. Early morning private Mass in a chapel of St. Peter’s Basilica, followed by free time to tour the magnificent Renaissance church. Visit the Vatican Museum and enjoy its many wonders before arriving at the Sistine Chapel, with its famous ceiling frescoes, including “The Creation of Adam”, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512. Return to hotel for dinner. DAY 5 – TUESDAY, MAY 22: ROME Morning departure by motorcoach to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, the largest Catholic Marian church in Rome, for a private Mass. Continue on to St. John Lateran (the oldest Basilica in Rome and the official ecclesiastical seat of the Pope); the Holy Stairs (regarded as the stairs climbed by Jesus on his way to face Pontius Pilate); Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem (which houses the Relics of the Passion of the Lord); and the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains (the home of Michelangelo’s statue of Moses). Afternoon free to explore the wonders of Rome. Dinner at hotel. DAY 6 – WEDNESDAY, MAY 23: ROME – SUBIACO – ASSISI Walk to St. Peter’s to attend public audience with Pope Francis in the Square. After lunch, travel by motorcoach to Assisi, stopping on the way at Sacro Speco in Subiaco (Holy Cave of the Monastery of St. Benedict) for celebration of Reconciliation. Enjoy the stunning scenery from the mountain top. Dinner and overnight in Assisi at the San Francesco Hotel inside the walls of the old city. DAY 7 – THURSDAY, MAY 24: ASSISI A full day in the town where St. Francis was born and died. The day begins with a private morning Mass at the Tomb of St. Francis located at the Basilica of St. Francis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction of the Basilica began in 1228, the year St. Francis was declared a saint (two years after his death). Free time to experience the wonders of this ancient Holy town. Late-day prayer near the Basilica of St. Clare (circa 1257), which contains the tomb of the Assisi- born saint, who was a follower and friend of St. Francis. Dinner and overnight in Assisi.

DAY 8 – FRIDAY, MAY 25: ASSISI – SIENA – FLORENCE Visit San Damiano, where St. Francis received his calling in 1205 to “repair the Church” and where St. Clare died in 1253, for a celebration of Mass at the Basilica of Saint Marie of the Angels. This is where the Franciscan movement began when Francis renounced his material possessions and vowed to live among the poor. Travel to Siena, birthplace of St. Catherine, Doctor of the Church, to view the old city, Piazza del Campo, Duomo (Siena Cathedral) and the Church of St. Dominic. Continue on to Florence, the capital of Tuscany. Dinner and overnight in Florence.

DAY 9 – SATURDAY, MAY 26: FLORENCE A full day in this beautiful city of Renaissance art and architecture. We will visit Florence’s 13th century Gothic Cathedral, with its magnificent 15th century dome, the Baptistery of St. John and the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli at the Basilica of Santa Croce. Free time to explore. Dinner and overnight in Florence.

DAY 10 – SUNDAY, MAY 27: FLORENCE – ORVIETO A relaxing day in Orvieto, described as one of the most striking hill towns of central Italy. Its Cathedral, or Duomo, was built over several centuries and brings together many architectural styles, including Gothic and Romanesque. We’ll take a cable car to view the beauty of the area then lunch in the medieval and picturesque town of Bolsena on the lakeside. Free time to explore Orvieto, where we will have dinner and spend our last night.

DAY 11 – MONDAY, MAY 28 Today our pilgrimage-tour comes to an end. Transfer to Rome airport for a direct flight to Toronto.
