Introduction This brochure is a departure from our previous pattern. Our speciality is extended stay programmes of residential adult education for retired people in four star hotels with adequate public space.

Our main offerings in this brochure continue in this vein given the right trading opportunities. But we intend where possible to add live music and a party atmosphere to some of them under the remit.

“Enchanting Times in Italy”

These events will allow groups of people to enjoy a few days away. The settings for these programmes will allow travellers to access the great attractions of three of the most attractive cities on earth: Rome, Florence and Venice. The Sulmona programme will give you an exotic day in Rome followed by a short stay in Sulmona with views of the highest mountains in Central Italy. Ronta is the place for access to Florence and Lucca. Both our hotel destinations are chosen for the magnificent hospitality they offer.

We have forty years of experience in Italy and these two places offer unique levels of hospitality which we have never found these levels elsewhere. The Santacroce and Marrani families really enjoy making you feel at home.

We hope you will find this brochure stimulating enough for you to want to join us at some point in 2018.

2018-19 ProgrammeEntry to the programmes will normally close a month in advance but there is something new to announce. Over this period every event has limited

capacity. Several of them give prominence to water colour painting.

Ovidius Hotel SulmonaJoin us for eight days in Sulmona next Spring. The origins of Sulmona lie deep in our history. We know it as the birthplace of the Latin poet Ovid after whom our hotel is named. Rumour has it that it was founded by a refugee from Troy a man called Sulieman who was a companion to Aeneas. Livy mentions it in his memoirs because during the Carthaginian period the city remained loyal to Rome despite the brief successes enjoyed by Hannibal...

The mountains of Abruzzo which tower over the city and give it a unique atmosphere, provide archaeological evidence to indicate the presence of Oppidium, one of the largest fortified settlements in central Italy. The relevant area is located higher up on the current site of the city. The current location of the city is between the two rivers Gizio and Vella. The rivers are all that is left of a large lake situated here in prehistoric times and released a long time ago by an earthquake. The Greeks referred to the area as “peline” - a muddy place.

Enchanting Times in ItalyOvidius Hotel Sulmona | Music Weeks From £900 | 1st - 21st May 2018

In Roman times, Sulmona was the location of three municipalities and suffered several times from the usual power struggles. Sulla destroyed the place. Pompey located a garrison here. Eventually he was removed by Mark Anthony on instructions from Caesar. However a date of historic importance for the city is 43BC, the birth year of the illustrious poet Ovid., the poet of love and of Metamorphosis, then exiled to Tomi, in Romania by the Emperor Augustus. From the initials of the famous half-line “Sulmo Mihi Patria Est” the city has taken the initials for its coat of arms “SMPE”.

The family who own the Ovidius will do their best to help you enjoy a great painting holiday Part of the dining room can be sealed off and used as your studio. The area is rich in scenery and ancient villages... excellent places for painters to explore . Unique settings including an ancient village which is listed as the most picturesque in Italy. Its a challenge to your skills. If such opportunities are taken advantage of the hotel will supply you with packed lunches or direct you to local places for refreshment. We would like to remind you that we do not supply materials. That is your responsibility.

Mariadora Santacroce is going to bring a personal touch to your holiday here. You will get a welcome drink on arrival. Your breakfast will present you with a good selection of items, many of them homemade. Your evening meal will feature the excellent hotel cooking. We know we have tried it. It includes a salad buffet a soup dish, pasta and a main course, desert and water and wine featuring the local speciality Montepuliciano D’Abruzzo.

“The universe has not always existed” “Mind has no gender”

These are an innovation. They are introduced into the programmes in Sulmona and Ronta. The idea is that a group of musicians goes with a relatively small group to provide atmosphere and engender entertainment over a period of four or five days. “Let’s have a party” This is an addition to the programme for the group. There are three musical weeks in May.

Groups in Sulmona first spend a night and a day in Rome enjoying the day long fully inclusive outing described in our brochure before going to see the Santacroce family in Sulmona in beautiful surroundings within sight of the highest mountains in central Italy. Relax and enjoy some music and some strolling in Sulmona and possibly an outing into the nearby countryside. The Abruzzo is not an often visited province of Italy. You will find it charming.

In Ronta you will enjoy the unrivalled hospitality of the Marrani family. There will be an opportunity to use the local railway to run into Florence for the day. Life gets continuously more difficult for a variety of reasons. We just have to learn to cope. It is essential to keep going because life when you have nothing to look forward to is depressing. Keeping going has always meant trying something new. So here we are at it again with a new slant on our philosophical theme of lifelong learning in a challenging collegiate environment where adding a little exercise keeps the brain cells working. That’s a way to enhance life.

We hope you will find this project interesting and will give it some consideration and support. So what is it? It is an italophile production. We intend to create a month long programme in October on a full board basis for £1100 per fortnight or £1700 at the Hotel Marrani in the village of Ronta.

This is the area where the Italian Renaissance came to maturity and the culture of the west gathered its initial energy which has influenced us all to the present day. So the core of the holiday will be a daily programme of activities in the Hotel covering the interests that usually appeal to you : language, watercolour painting, music, history, keep fit, In order to justify the relatively low price we need enough support: — a target number of around seventy and a maximum number of one hundred. Any help we can acquire to achieve this will l be much appreciated. We have something stimulating to look forward to: the essence of life itself.

Relax Learn Explore to which we can add “Experience”, which is worth enjoying. Join us!

The hotel is run by a family and is not part of a chain: Claudia and Riccardo are your local hosts. The nearest small town is San Lorenzo: a bus will take you there. Two hundred metres from the hotel is a railway station with trains to Florence (going south) Faenza and Ravenna (going north). You can use it as a base to explore a great deal of the most historic parts of Italy (Tuscany Umbria, Emilia-Romagna, Liguria). If you are energetic even Rome and Venice, Milan and Turin. Being based economically in Ronta could give you a magic month in Italy.

Watercolour Painting | Italy 2018Matelica, ItalyFrom £850 | Half-board | 7 nightsSingle Supplement applies

Watercolour Course DetailsYour Tutor - Melvyn RandallMelvyn is a watercolour artist from Wiltshire, England. He has sold paintings and help workshops across the UK and Internationally. Melvyn specialises in a fairly loose style of painting and as a self taught artist is ideally placed to help you hone your skills by drawing on his own experiences.

This course will be tailored towards those with some basic experience of painting in watercolour, as well as those with a little more experience seeking to improve their style.

We will endeavour to paint outside and on location wherever possible. Melvyn will provide a demonstration each day where he will work closely with you and happily answer any questions or queries that you may have; why a particular scene has been chosen, how to sketch the scene, compositional advice, colour mixes, brush selection and much more...

The aim is for everyone to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of Matelica, enjoy a unique Italian experience and ultimately produce some memorable works of art that can be taken home.

“Happy is the man who has overcome his ego” “We only think when we are confronted with problems”

Matelica is a commune of the province of Macerata, located within the region of Marche. The town has a population of approximately 10,000 and is steeped in history.

Specifcally chosen for the course, there are many potential subjects here for the watercolour painter. These include beautiful old buildings, several churches and a picturesque local park. The town also has an interesting weekly street market on Thursdays. Transfer time from Perugia airport to your hotel is circa 40 minutes.

The HotelAccommodation will be provided at the Hotel Forriti, which is ideally situated in the middle of Matelica. The hotel was selected following a review of several establishments in the area: it boasts a ‘very good’ Trip Advisor rating; has comfortable en-suite rooms and the adjoining restaurant provides excellent authentic Italian Cuisine.

The hotel contains a covered courtyard and Melvyn will be equipped with numerous reference photographs and teaching information, should the weather prevent us from painting outdoors.

More about Melvyn Randall I’ve always held a keen interest in art and particularly the challenge, fresh-ness and various nuances of painting in watercolour. However, it wasn’t un-

til my retirement 10 years ago that I was able to devote sufficient time to painting and hone my skills. Since then I’ve given demonstrations and held workshops for various art societies across the UK, as well as exhibiting and selling paintings at home and abroad.

Being self-taught, I am acutely aware of how frustrating the medium of watercolour can be; I believe that this leaves me well placed in helping others learn the techniques required. I have developed several key guidelines that, when followed, will help you to produce satisfying results in your own paintings.

My workshops generally take the form of paint-along sessions, where the aim is for participants to produce a finished Watercolour of their own! Where possible I like to hold classes ‘alfresco’, enabling me to demonstrate the process of finding a subject and painting outdoors.

I would be grateful if you could take the time to visit my website, where you can find out a little more about me, view some of my work and also get an impression of the subjects that I enjoy painting.

Please note materials are not provided for my classes. However, should you require advice on what to bring with you, or if you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me using the details below.

Visit CremonaViolins are our lifeblood. Amongst the many master craftsmen who worked here were Stradivarius and Guarneri.

Sara works for Dellearti Design Hotel in the heart of Cremona. Just over ten years ago the hotel won the European architectural design award . That speaks for its elegance and attraction. You will find it in the historic centre of the city situated among buildings exuding medieval charm. Set like a jewel between Piazza Duomo, considered one of the most beautiful squares in Europe and the hub of the city nightlife, the famous Teatro Ponchielli the hotel presents itself as a dream of a contemporary style. Steel, glass, dark wood, natural light, minimal lines and at the same time great atmosphere accompany the guests from the lobby to the garden,

If music is your passion then Sarah Vago is waiting to bring a personal touch to your holiday in this unique place. The town on the River Po has a particular atmosphere based on its musical history. You can read more about this below.

Why not consider visiting us.

Experience the Atmosphere in CremonaRead Sleeper by Paul Adam

You will enjoy a holiday here in quintessential Italy..

Paul Adam is a thriller writer you have probably never heard of but his book is set in Cremona and features a violin.

On a pleasant June evening, four men gather at a comfortable rural home outside Cremona, Italy, for their monthly indulgence in the playing of string quartets. They are very old friends: a priest, a policeman and two luthiers (it is Cremona, after all, where the building of stringed instruments has a very distinguished history). They share wine, laughter, music and stories, then contentedly disperse. A few hours later, one of the luthiers is found murdered in his workshop, stabbed with one of his own chisels.

The shop has been searched, not violently but thoroughly, yet nothing seems to be missing. The luthier was a well-liked elderly man, and his murder is extremely puzzling. The only clue is that he seems to have been recently wrapped up in the quest for a rare, and quite possibly apocryphal, violin. The policeman calls in the second luthier for consultation and together they set out on a trail that takes them to Milan, Venice and even the north of England.

I enjoy a mystery that introduces me to a new area of expertise. Adam immerses us in the world of fine violins, giving a wealth of specialized information without ever appearing to lecture, or straying from the story. Everything fits.

Our narrator -- the investigating luthier -- is an extremely likeable man, intelligent, warm-hearted, with strengths and flaws that combine to show his humanity. We are on his side from the beginning; the author helps us feel his distress and confusion at the loss of his old friend, and we glimpse older pains, some self-inflicted, as well as the joys and satisfactions of a life well lived. If you read through the book you get an understanding of both Cremona and the satisfaction that attaches to the art of violin making.

Linda Danielsen Røygaard latest article about Life Long learning in Andalusia, Spain

The province of Cádiz has a charm of its own in winter when the sun is shining on the wild shorelines, mountainside villages and active tourists from Europe gather in the

beachfront hotels on Costa de la Luz.

Andalusia in the south of Spain is great in all four seasons and the perfect spot to let sun, sea and wind batter your senses during the cold winter months in North Europe. The wind is no obstacle as long as you can enjoy a café con leche in one of small beach bars, play golf on the greens, bike along the curved cycle paths or learn some new skills.

A variety of shared learningsA group of seniors from England stretch their mind to learn Spanish in one of the conference rooms in Hotel Barossa Park, located in the village Chiclana de la Frontera. Other seniors learn about using tablets and mobiles, watercolour techniques, go to singing and music classes or exercise aquarobics in the indoor swimming pool. The long sandy beach just outside the hotel is great for shoreline strolls on peaceful mornings or afternoons.

“Lifelong learning means keeping your mind alive with a little intelligent activity and taking some exercise; together this ensures that you live a little longer and enjoy a better life,” says Philip Nash, who founded the residential adult education programme GO/CTE almost twenty years ago.

Excursions in the provinceThe energetic 80-year old director and his sympathetic wife Pam organise outings to nearby attractions and places of historic or cultural interest. In Cádiz, the great port city of Andalucía, you can visit the cathedral and get greater insight into Spanish traditions and heritage, or you can go shopping in the narrow streets of the historic old town. In the small harbour tow n Sancti-Petri, you will find the cosy restaurant Cirilo in Club Nautico where you can eat a sea food lunch with the locals. If you want to shop fresh fruit and vegetables, clothes, leather crafts and colourful pottery, visit the market in the nearby villages Chiclana or San Fernando.

On a trip to Bolonia, you can gain insight into Roman city planning and urban life during the Empire. A day trip to the famous National Park Doñana in the delta of the Rio Gualdalquivir is an ideal way to experience the fascinating scenery and landscape in the nearby provinces. In the vital refuge for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds and other wildlife, you will see wild boars, red deer, flamingos and the small wading bird, sanderling. If you are lucky, you might get a glimpse of the famous Spanish imperial eagle. discoveringdonana.com

Fiestas and sherry tastingSpanish culture is to a great extent characterized by it’s food, wine and traditional fiestas - a full-blooded affair, full of colour, noise and spectacle. Every year in mid -February, you can enjoy the Carnival in Cádiz and mingle with the locals in the streets and plazas, see processions, children ‘s shows and listen to the carnival groups’ spontaneous singing.

Besides GO/CTE’s daily piano recital and farewell parties, there is music and entertainment every week at Hotel Barossa Park after a tasty dinner in the hotel restaurant. At St. Valentine’s Day and during the Carnival in Cadiz, locals from Sevilla and the nearby villages join the parties at the hotel and keep the dance floor busy.

If you want to try some of the local wines, visit some of the bodegas in the sherry -making towns, eg. The latter also has a fascinating fortress, the 12th century Almohad, southwest of Plaza del Arenal, and a beautiful castle Palacio Atalaya with an antique clock and watch muse um. andalucia.com/cities/jerez.htm

Great surroundings is a good starting point to learn new skills and learn from and collaborate with others. During a two week or a month’s stay in Costa de la Luz, you will not only escape the cold northern European winter, but also make new friends and get acquainted with the highlights of Andalusia.

MORE INFORMATIONU3A

The Universities of the Third Age (U3A) was started in France at the Faculty of Social Sciences in Toulouse in 1973 by Professor Pierre Vellas. The aims of the scheme were education and stimulation of mainly retired members of the community. By the early 1980s, the U3A reached the United Kingdom where it radically changed to be more a self-help organisation. Today, anybody in their third age can join U3A.

GO/CTEThe residential adult education programme for retired people, GO/CTE, was founded in 1996 by Philip Antony Nash and Pam Nash. Every year in February passionate people share what they do and how they do it, and seniors can choose from a wide range of activities in the spacious 4 star Hotel Barrosa Park, located east of Cádiz. In late summer, GO/CTE offers stays in the Veneto reg ion in Italy.

ANDALUSIAThe south of Spain has fascinated travellers since the early 19th century due to its exotic, often splendid past, dramatic mountains, the unique flamenco music and long coastline. Andalusia accounts for 17% of the whole of Spain and is famous for its mild winter. It is the most populated and the second largest in area of the communities in Spain.

Costa de la Luz meaning the ‘coast of light’, situated on Spain’s most south westerly tip, is a popular destination for its natural beauty. In winter, the temperatures are distinctly mild with average temperatures in February between 16°C and 17°C.

The province of Cádiz stretches from the mouth of the Rio Guadalquivir to the Strait of Gibraltar and inland to the rainy mountains of The Sierra de Grazalema National Park. The Cádiz cuisine is influenced by the wines from its province and by the wide variety of fish from the coast such as dorada, corvina, sargo, turbot, tuna fish and shellfish.

HOTEL BAROSSA PARKHotel Barossa Park is a grand 4 star hotel in the beach front line, located in the La Barrosa complex in the Novo Sancti Petri development of Chiclana de la Frontera. The hotel has large indoor and outdoor gardens and spacious facilities and rooms. Food is served in the res taurant on a buffet basis and include a wide range of choice. A letter from Sal Khan at Khan AcademyHi Philip., Thank you so much for your December 2015 gift to Khan Academy! Our year-end fundraising drive was a huge success, with more than 130,000 people pitching in to help us continue to expand our content, develop innovative learning tools, and reach more learners around the world in 2016.

When I first started making videos and exercises to help my cousin learn math, I never imagined that it would grow into what it’s become today. With your help, we’re reaching tens of millions of learners every month, with thousands of free videos, exercises, and articles covering an ever-growing range of subjects.

Building a grassroots base of support from people who value Khan Academy is the best way to ensure that we can continue to work toward our mission of a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. In December, you pitched in to be a part of this movement, and we are so appreciative of your support.

From all of us at Khan Academy, thank you!

Onward!Sal KhanFounder, Khan AcademyFor free, for everyone, forever.
